Forgive but, Don’t Forget

was raised in the Church and was taught to forgive those who have done wrong things. I also learned from some strong people, like my Mother, the late Sis. Earlie Groves, that you should not forget what you have seen and how you should react to a similar situation if it is repeated.The success of our nation and citizens will greatly depend on our people remembering the past. Young people of today were not around when America was really divided based on race alone. They didn’t get to see all of the separation through segregation; nor the mistreatment of Black people in every stage of life.

Racial injustices are still occurring, but, a lot of people in positons of power seem to be unaware of what is still happening to us. Recently, there was a controversial massive assault on Black voters in the state of Georgia, where 50,000 Black voters were removed from the state’s voting roles for “suspicious reasons”. At the time of my writing, some powerful people are speaking out against the voter suppression of Black voters.

Stacey Abrams, an African-American woman running for Governor of Georgia has spoken boldly about voter suppression. She is being helped in her quest (to get those voters’ rights that were taken away restored back) by African-American Civil Rights groups, who have filed lawsuits against those responsible. Abrams has a real chance of winning the upcom-

ing election because of the courage she has shown in exposing voter suppression.

I think we have people in our communities (not everybody) who think the past is something unimportant to know. They think by just going to church and living in the present time not connected to the past is the best way to live. Well, I will have to tell you God is for us forgiving our enemies and people who have mistreated us in the past; however, He truly is for us not repeating evil and inhumane activities of the past. That is why it makes more sense to forgive the evil committed against us in the past, while not forgetting it, because it allows us to keep the evil form resurfacing and attacking us again.

I hope people in this nation realize voter suppression and terrifying voters is un-American and must be stopped. Although I’m against symbols of evil which represent tumultuous times in American and world history like the Nazi and Confederate flags, I’m also very much in support of museums, newspapers, history books, schools and other information sources which tell the truth about our American past.

I truly believe our young people will have better relationships with each other, regardless of their race as they progress forward, because they will see how the older Americans were able to forgive their enemies despite their wrong actions.

America is a true democracy and true Americans should have no problem with any race or group of Americans building up their voting power. Do what God would do, “love and forgive your enemies of the past”, but don’t forget what happened!

Information is power God has provided us. We must use the governmental organizational structure established for us, and not forget to VOTE! - AANI

Voter Beware!

is the Season again…

The season of politics.

We see the signs everywhere. Literally. The streets are lined with rows of candidate billboards. Our yards are scattered with mini-placards advertising and promoting a particular candidate. Our phones are cluttered with pre-recorded messages reminding us of the season and its importance. A majority of the commercials we are viewing on our television sets are constant, almost subliminal, reminders of who is the best person to serve us and who is not.

This is supposed to be a time of excitement. A time of foreseen advancement and the overall betterment of this country for all citizens. Right? In my work as union organizer for state employees and serving as committee chairman for my county during the Obama years I have found countless encounters, good and bad, with state legislators and local government officials. During this time, I’ve had the chance to observe and look into some of the simple but shrewd methods used on the campaign trails of today that can gain our influence and votes.

One such technique used is the Attack the other Guy technique when running for office.

Smear the opponent’s character and credibility. Drop a negative story or rumor. They don’t even have to be completely true.

Another avenue I’ve found that is used to win elections takes a certain skill set. It is most effectively used by seasoned, campaign veterans who have won multiple elections.

The play-it-safe style of running for office. That is to never answer a direct question clearly while giving the impression that you did. Sorta the voter-rope-adope. This scheme even comes with an escape clause. The often-used Hillary response, “I must have miss spoke.”

Last on my list may be the most important. BE SEEN. Make as many public appearances as your schedule will permit, especially if you know there will be pictures taken or local news coverage. Let your face be seen everywhere. Openings and ground breakings are good, as are events honoring someone or organization. Churches with large memberships are valuable and suggest a sense of morals and standards. This also gives the impression a candidate is the church leaders choice. As a nation and a people, we must go beyond the veil of campaign bum-foolery.

We are aware of the importance of voting and consequences of not. We know the history of the sacrifices made to obtain this precious right. Your vote carries a weight. A weight of responsibility. A weight of lost lives, of families destroyed, and ultimately a weight that represents you, and what say you. When cast, know your vote has substance and is reflective of you. Be confident in your choice regardless of party bias or affiliation. Vote your conscience, regardless of its popularity. Know your candidates well, and their agendas, their goals and how they will reach those stated goals. Examine a plan of action and how it could affect you. Know and be sure of what you’re getting.

The right to vote in this country is a precious privilege. It is critical that we all get out and cast our votes, but even more significant is the weight, integrity and manner in which we use to exercise this right. - AANI

Prairie View Voter Suppression

ver the past few weeks, Prairie View A & M students were taught a hard lesson: The fight for Civil Rights is not over. Despite the post-civil war passage of the fifteenth amendment, the civil rights act and the voting rights act, PVA&M students are having to fight for their rights to vote.

Prairie View A & M is located in Waller County, Texas, about 43 miles northwest of Houston’s downtown. For years Waller County has systematically denied equal voting rights to Prairie View A & M students.

For example, in 2008, the United States Department of Justice filed a complaint and consent decree against Waller County regarding the County’s voter registration practices and procedures that violated the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The violations primarily affected students at Prairie View A&M University.

On October 17, 2018, Waller County Commissioner’s Court voted to continue that tradition of discrimination. At issue was not the addressing system that had again been under fire the last few weeks, but the assignment of early voting opportunities.

Earlier in the year, Waller County Commissioner’s Court adopted an early voting schedule that was jointly recommended by the Democratic and Republican Party Chairs. That schedule provided two weeks of early voting in the upcom-

ing November election, that is, except for Prairie View. All the cities in Waller County have two weeks of early voting except Prairie View which has only one week. The City of Prairie View has an overwhelmingly Black/African-American population (79%) many of whom are PVAM students.

Even Monaville, which has less than 200 residents was given two weeks early voting, but not Prairie View. Overall, Waller County’s population is about 25% Black/African-American.

There are two critical methods the county currently uses to disenfranchise these young voters.

One is the rural addressing system and the second is the barrier resulting from their limited access to early voting.

Rural Addressing System Fails Prairie View Rural addressing systems are used in places other than Prairie View or Waller County. The system is part of the U.S. Postal Service’s zip code, 911 and mail delivery service to rural residents. Prairie View is considered a rural community. It lacks home mail delivery service, so the intent of using the rural addressing system is to allow for rural free delivery at roadside mail boxes. The problem with the system adopted and implemented for Prairie View is that the effect of the system may constitute an unconstitutional violation of Prairie View residents’ right to vote.

First, the system is confusing because students on campus get mail by using one of two addresses assigned for mail delivery to the campus. One address is 100 University Drive and the other is 700 University Drive.

The 700 University Drive address is shared by an off-campus site not connected to the university.

Second, the system divides students into two separate

groups and assigns them to two cities for residency addresses purposes, rather than assign them to the city wherein they actually reside: the city of Prairie View. Some of the Prairie View residents are assigned to the City of Waller while others are assigned to the City of Hempstead, notwithstanding the fact that the City of Prairie View maintains a United States Post Office Building with its own zip code of 77446.

When Prairie View residents go to vote in their “assigned” city they are referred back to polling places in Prairie View.

The addressing system also leaves Prairie View voters vulnerable to challenge at the polls.

Once someone challenges the validity of the voter’s ballot due to the address discrepan-

This would clear up the confusion about where residents would vote, (the official address or the location they actually reside), eliminating the artificially created barrier to voting. However, county, state and postal officials have been unwilling to make this change.

The Prairie View rural addressing system, as flawed as it is, was at least resolved for this current election. Texas’ secretary of state announced in October that students at Prairie View A&M will be allowed to vote in November’s election regardless of the addressing system. According to the New Texas Tribune, officials will be stationed at campus polling sites to ensure

cy, that ballot would become a provisional ballot subject to invalidation. Last week, officials promised the students that would not happen and that their ballots would be recognized. It is a temporary band-aid even though an easy and permanent fix is available.

However, the addressing system is not the only barrier. The county also limited access to students to vote during early voting and have been unwilling to correct the problem.

Early Voting Denied The early voting schedule adopted by the Waller County commissioner’s court provides two weeks access to vote early except for Prairie View which

has only one week. During week one, the county allowed 6 voting days to each of the cities of Hempstead, Waller and Brookshire; 3 days to Katy, 2 days to Monaville and 0 days to Prairie View.

During the second week, 5 days are scheduled for each of the cities of Hempstead, Waller and Brookshire, 3 days to Katy, 2 days to Monaville and 5 days to Prairie View.

On its face the disparity appears race-based, but there is also the issue of disparate voting days based on population.

Prairie View which makes up at least 16% of the county’s population gets only 1 week, while Monaville with less than 1% of the population people gets two weeks.

On October 17th, the county had an opportunity to remedy the disparity by extending early voting by one week to Prairie View so that it would have access equal to the county’s other cities. Instead, Commissioner’s Court rejected the corrective proposal, apparently on the ground that both county political party chairs had endorsed the current early voting scheme.

When coupled with the county’s long tradition of voter disenfranchisement of students at Prairie View, the explanation appears suspect. The Waller County Commissioner’s court has opted to continue its disparate treatment. The fact that political party chairs are complicit in the abuse doesn’t make it any less improper.

Many believe that the commissioner court’s historic refusal to correct the rural addressing system and its recent rejection of a plan to correct the early voting disparity exposes a systemic stratagem to disenfranchise the predominantly Black residents of Prairie View and to dilute the Black vote.

By: Chelsea Davis, M.Ed. HOUSTON - “Thank God I don’t look like what I’ve been through,” expressed Dr. Conte Terrell, who is the founder and president of Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women, the oldest African-American owned domestic violence agency in Houston.

Last year, the agency celebrated 20 years of service, but did not get a chance to officially celebrate due to Hurricane Harvey. Most people don’t know this, but Dr. Terrell is a survivor of domestic violence as she was married to an abusive spouse for ten years.

It was during one of her counseling sessions that she realized she was in an abusive situation. “I wasn’t what I thought domestic violence looked like.

I thought I could never be that person because that person only comes from the wrong side of the tracks, or wasn’t educated…and none of those things were applicable to me.”

When she started to understand the situation she was in, she wanted to leave, but, that meant no more financial means for counseling due to her spouse cutting it off. “I couldn’t afford counseling…so I created one and started Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women.”

This agency offers many services that are free, including domestic counseling, case management services, help with housing and job placement. Oftentimes the domestic abuser will isolate the significant other and keep her from working, causing a need to start over. The agency also offers court advocacy to assist with custody battles, and crime victim compensation because unfortunately, not everyone survives domestic violence.

“What I wanted to have was a wonderful comfortable place for someone to go to, that offers these services for free, that was just as nice if you went to a $100

or $200 an hour counselor. Or a step above, if you had come from a shelter. At that point in time, I didn’t have a place like that, and henceforth, that’s how Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women was born.”

There are three locations. One is located in the Galleria area, which is the corporate office, one off the Southwest freeway in the Arena Tower, and another in Atlanta, Georgia, which is Dr. Terrell’s hometown.

Dr. Terrell noted that this is not true because people can be abused emotionally, verbally, or even financially, which she expressed that all of these elements can lead to physical abuse. Another misconception is if you’re not being hit, you will not ever

The agency is able to provide these services through their signature fundraiser event, which is The Legacy Awards and a Gospel Stage Play. This is their tenth year for the signature awards. It is a red carpet event that has featured artists like Vickie Winans, and many other gospel artists who stepped in to help with the cause. This year they are bringing back gospel award winning singer, Sherri Jones-Moffett who sings Encourage Yourself.

She was the first artist to perform in 2007 for the first Legacy Awards fundraiser. A lot rides on this event, because the funds raised are how they are able to service many people for free.

There are a plethora of great events planned and everything goes towards helping survivors.

There are some misconceptions when it comes to domestic violence. According to Dr. Terrell, one misconception is that

She shared a story of a lady who was not ever hit by her significant other, but he was extremely controlling emotionally, psychologically, financially, and verbally. When the abused woman went to get a protective court order out of fear, she was ambushed and killed by her significant other when she left the courthouse. Even though a person might not have ever been hit, doesn’t mean they won’t be injured further or even killed.

Domestic violence is not as widely discussed as it should be. One reason is, many are not aware that October is not just breast cancer awareness month, but domestic violence awareness month as well.

Dr. Terrell stated, “Domestic violence kills if not as much or more than breast cancer.” She explained, people often feel you can’t help that you had breast

cancer, but you can help that you are in a domestic violence situation. Dr. Terrell made it known, “You cannot help being in that type of relationship without the support, help and resources that organizations like myself provide. That’s why it’s important to give people the understanding and awareness, that it is not a choice.”

“I fell in love with someone who I thought was my knight in shining armor, but ended up being my nightmare on Elm Street.

I had no idea. I went through what I call all the checks and balances when you’re looking for a man…domestic violence has no respect of a person…. people have the misconception that we just picked a wrong person, but that is not true.” Dr. Terrell made it known that it takes a village, a community, to help someone to escape and be a survivor from their domestic abuser.

If someone is in a domestic violence situation, there are certain steps a person should take.

“We as domestic experts know that the risk of escaping domestic violence heightens to death at 75% at the time a survivor is attempting to leave the abuser,” expressed Dr. Terrell.

The first thing a person should do is to make sure you have a safety plan. Get with an organization or tell someone that

can safely help you escape. “I did not know how and I did not know when I was going to leave, but I knew I was going to leave,” she stated. Dr. Terrell explained sometimes you have to have a plan of even how to survive in the abuse until it is not a perfect time, but a better time to make a change and the escape time to leave. If you know someone who is in an abusive situation, the best thing a person can do is be supportive and not judgmental.

Dr. Terrell and her organization has helped many women from all over for the last 20 years, but she can’t do it alone.

She needs the help of others in order to continue giving women the free services they need.

Fresh Spirit Wellness for Women helps 30 to 40 new domestic violence clients a month, which is over 400 a year.

It takes $80-100,000 a month to run an organization that provides services for free. “We have helped over 5,000 women escape safely and we have seen many die and have helped many families recover from the death.

TIPPING THE SCALES OF JUSTICE

By LaTreshia A. Hamilton, J.D. HOUSTON - “Women of color know how to get things done for our families, our communities, and our country. When we use our voices, people listen. When we lead, people follow. And when we do it together, there’s no telling what we can accomplish.” – Michelle Robinson Obama An unprecedented number of African-American women are running for judgeships in Harris County, Texas. Twenty-one, to be exact; 19 Democratic candidates and 2 Republican candidates.

That begs the question: Why the sudden increase in African-American women seeking elective office? Is it to combat sexism? Challenge racism? Or, are African-American women simply tired of their efforts being overlooked and their plight being marginalized?

Germaine Tanner, the Democratic candidate for Judge of the 311th Family District Court proffered: “As it stands right now, there is an imbalance in our courts and the diversity of the communities in which we live are not represented in our current leadership. Our collective candidacies are looking to correct that imbalance.”

Nationwide, nearly 600 African-American women are running for elective office in the United States this year. Arguably, a plausible explanation for this historic rise may be due to African-American women rightfully asserting their voices and demanding representational parity.

After all, African-American women have consistently used their voices—and votes—to support an array of diverse candidates, yet they still do not have an equal voice or a seat at the table.

According to the American Bar Association’s National Database on Judicial Diversity in State Courts, as of 2010, nationally, African-Americans make up 9% of judges in courts of last resort, 8% of judges in intermediate appellate level courts, and 7% of judges in trial courts of general jurisdiction.

Moreover, as of 2018, statewide, the African-American representation in Texas Courts is as follows: Texas Supreme Court – 0; Court of Criminal Appeals – 0; Court of Appeals – 2; District Courts – 28; Criminal District Courts – 3; County Courts at Law – 8; Probate Courts – 2; County Courts – 0; Justice Courts – 28; Municipal Courts – 68. Of the 1,306 justices or judges in Texas, 139 are African-American and 83 are African-American women.

Considering African-Americans make up roughly 12% of the population in Texas and 19.7% of the population in Harris County, these are staggering figures.

The purpose of this article is not to persuade voters, endorse candidates, or advocate for a single political party or ideology.

Rather, it is to bring awareness to the racial and gender disparities that exists in the Texas judicial system and to acknowledge the fact that experienced, qualified African-American women do exist.

To be an informed voter, one must be knowledgeable about the candidates, the government offices they are running for, key issues, and the candidates’ positions and qualifications. It is essential to our democracy that we be fully informed members of the electorate and cast ballots that are rooted in logic and reason.

Accordingly, the twenty-one African-American women run-

ning for judgeships in Harris County, Texas and the offices they seek to hold are as follows: Texas Court of Criminal Appeals The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is the court of last resort for all criminal matters in the State of Texas. The Court consists of a Presiding Judge and eight Judges. The Judges are elected in staggered, partisan elections by the voters of the entire state, and they hold their offices for a term of six years beginning January 1 and ending December 31.

Established in 1891, there has never been an African-American elected to serve on the Court of Criminal Appeals in the Court’s 127-year history. However, that could change in the 2018 Midterm Election.

There are two candidates on the ballot: Judge Maria Jackson and Judge Ramona Franklin.

Judge Jackson is the Democratic candidate for Presiding Judge, Place 1. She is currently the Presiding Judge of the 339th Harris County Criminal District Court. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington and Texas Wesleyan University School of Law ( n o w - Te x a s A&M School of Law).

When asked why she is running for a

seat on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Judge Jackson said, “I decided to run for this seat because of the compassion, wisdom and discernment I have gained through my experience as a trial judge. I have over 15 years of judicial experience. I served as a City of Houston Municipal Court Judge from 2003 to 2008, and since 2008 I have been the presiding judge of the 339th Harris County Criminal District Court.

I currently preside over serious felony offenses, which run the gamut of drug offenses for less than a gram to capital murder. I have presided over 75,000 cases and several have received national and international notoriety. In this public service role, I have had the opportunity to save and rehabilitate thousands of lives as well as send

many dangerous criminals to prison. I led the charge countywide in implementing sweeping changes for DWI probationers.

Those changes have been adopted by my colleagues and the Harris County Probation Department.”

Judge Jackson went on the say, “This Court needs new leadership that remains fair and unbiased, and is available to the court outside of traditional hours. Unfortunately, this Court has come under fire for being unfair and overly harsh on defendants.

Unlike my opponent, I will ensure that the Court remains open, when needed, especially when death penalty cases and other urgent matters need to be heard.

HOUSTON Recently, Jack Yates Sr. High School crowned the new Mr. and Miss Jack Yates.

Mr. Jack Yates 2018-2019 is Zachary Steward. Zachary is the son of Zandra Wilson and Ted Steward. Zachary is a senior with a 3.9 GPA. He has yet to make his college choice known. Zachary wants to be a radio personality/lawyer.

He is also President of the National Honor Society, senior class vice president and Drum Major in the World Famous Marching Motion Band.

A Mickey Leland intern, Zach is also a member of Dr. Kenneth Davis’s Program to mentor 1000 Black young men.

To Zachary being Mr. Yates means being someone who is

exemplary not only socially but, also being a great student in the classroom. He has already begun exemplifying and fulfilling that role as he scored a 1200 on the SAT in the 7th grade.

Since the age of 3-yearsold, he always wanted to be a Yates Lion. From the day he entered Yates as a freshman he has set the example. It is safe to say the Zachary will leave his mark forever in the Lion’s Den. Miss Yates for 2018-2019 is Tamarek Sweat. Tamarek has a 4.1 GPA. Miss Sweat is a dynamic senior at Yates.

She is a 4 year Letterman of the Yates cross country team, Captain of the cheerleading squad. Furthermore, she is planning to attend Texas A&M next fall.

Her career plans are to own her own pharmacies. Tamerek also plans to start an orga-

nization to save endangered Aquatics Species.

She is a member of Upward Bound and Math and Science.

She is a distinguished member of the National Honor Society. Lastly, she is a member of the Heart of Ethan Project. This young lady has set the example of what a Miss Yates should truly be.

Both of these students were able to go to Israel this past summer as representatives of Yates Sr. High school and HISD. I’m always proud of children that accomplish their goals.

Congrats again to Mr. and miss Yates 2018-2019 Tamerek Sweat and Zachary Steward. I know Principal Tiffany Guillory, the students, staff and alumni are looking forward to great things from you both. Much success to you in all of your future endeavors.

The Necessity of Now

We’ve heard a lot about what’s at stake in this election.

The reality is that this will be one of the most defining elections in the history of our country.

We’ve watched over the last two years how the United States of America, once a beacon on the hill, has become a circus to the rest of the world. Never before in modern history have we seen such divisiveness and chaos come from the White House, or from an American President for that matter.

We have watched as our country has been turned against each other, and the most vulnerable of us be made to feel left out of the American dream. It is clear, with the Republican control of the White House and both chambers of Congress,

that the American people are in desperate need of the checks and balances that our democracy was designed to provide.

Throughout the country, states are being governed by Republican leadership that has fallen in line with ultra conservative ideology that speak more to party than to the well-being of the citizenry.

In Georgia, where Stacy Abrams is poised to become the first African-American Female Governor in the history of our country, we see a record of voting laws that are designed to suppress minority voters— and there is evidence of their success.

In Florida, where Andrew Gillum is poised to make history as the first African-American Governor of that state, his opponent has resorted to racial

POLITICS rhetoric in attempt to invoke remnants of the old South.

These are examples of why it is important to diversify our government, not in terms of race but in ideology. The fact of the matter is that these candidates would bring about a fresh change in direction to their states. They are qualified, they are capable, and they deserve to lead.

We can’t only look at the big picture. In local races, we see diverse and progressive candidates throughout the country rising to the duty of public service. Their perspectives and stories matter to make everyone feel included in their governments.

In Harris County, where I live, there are 18 African-American women running for judicial seats, an unprecedented number at one time. The diversification

of the courts throughout Harris County is not only needed, but, can help to pave a way for the rest of the country. Much of what happens in the Harris County criminal system has been a litmus for the rest of the country.

In Harris County, more people are sentenced to the death penalty than any other place in the country. While Harris County has a Democratic District Attorney, there is still the need for reform in the actual court rooms.

These races matter. Whether they are happening in your back yard or in other places around the country, they speak to an overarching need for change in our governance. Perhaps, we thought because we elected the nation’s first African-American President that the remnants of racism and racist policies

would just disappear.

On the contrary, it unleashed the fears of many and got us to this place that we are currently experiencing. Now, more than ever, is the time we must exercise our right to vote. We must exercise our vote not just for our pocket books, but for our children’s future and the country they will inherit.

Sure, it sounds simple— but believe it or not, many among us don’t understand what’s at stake in this election. It’s easier for us to complain about the problem than it is for us to understand that collectively we are the solution.

If we can muster up enough courage to stand up and let our voices be heard, then we will collectively see our country change. At this point is not an option, it’s a necessity.

24th Annual Celebration of Black Business Excellence HOUSTON - Recently, the Greater Houston Black Chamber (GHBC) held its 24th Annual Pinnacle Awards at the Marriott Marquis Houston Hotel, where several of Houston’s best and most promising Black-owned businesses received high honors.

The GHBC Pinnacle Award recognizes leading African-American entrepreneurs for their success in business and their positive impact on the communities and industries they serve. Each year, five Pinnacle Awards and one Upstart Award are handed out to some of the most successful small businesses.

This is the first year a Rising Star awardee was also named.

Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello: Paradox of Liberty

DALLAS -- Gayle Jessup White strolled through a poignant exhibit about slavery while processing a complex past: Many of her ancestors – men, women and children – were enslaved by Thomas Jefferson.

Jessup White, who says she is a descendent of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, the enslaved women who had six

Jessup White said research shows Taylor fathered children with her great-grandmother, Rachael Robinson, who was his family’s domestic servant. DNA testing shows the Taylor family descendants are her third and fourth cousins.

Bishop T.D. Jakes, Pastor of The Potter’s House and an honorary co-chair of the Dallas exhibit, said Jefferson was a deeply conflicted man.

“You know, it’s interesting, as I was walking around museum, reading some of the quotes that were attributed to Jefferson, the conflict that he had while being an advocate for emancipation on one hand yet he was a slave owner on the other,” Jakes said.

Dr. Harry Robinson, President and CEO of Dallas’ Af-

rican American Museum, said Dallas residents – Black and White – can benefit from the exhibit.“Dallas is sometimes considered a cultural outpost and when we established this museum, we were trying to fill the void,” Robinson said. “This exhibition will help us bring about discussions of [racial] issues that we have been dodging for some time.”

Meanwhile, Jessup White said she wants people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to tour the exhibit to gain a deeper understanding of Hemings and other enslaved families who lived and worked on Jefferson’s plantation.

“This is an American story because these enslaved people helped shape America,” she said. “This exhibit is a big deal: There is lots to see, lots to take in, and lots to learn.”
