Opening in April, 2014, Pablo Silva has quickly gained a reputation for training champions. Under his tutelage and leadership, the school has produced 10 world champions since opening. This year, in addition to Pablo Silva himself winning a championship, there was Jordan Burton III, Sylvia Anh, Matthew Farrell of Beaumont, and Jules Johnson.

Jules Johnson may sound familiar to you. He is a local attorney, former candidate for the judiciary and avid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor. On Friday, August 25, 2017, at approximately 4:05 Pacific Standard Time, he fought the final of 6 matches for the day and emerged victorious--gaining the right to be called WORLD CHAMPION. We salute these local champions, congratulate them on their success and wish them much more success in the future.

Where Do We Go From Here?

I

’ve been thinking about a lot of things since the arrival of Harvey. Through my reflection, I often asked myself, where do we go from here? After so much that has happened, Houston will never be the same. There is no way we can be the same. It will take time for everyone to heal. In one-way or another, everyone was impacted.

Before the storm, the world was so divided. There were many issues such as White Supremacy, confederate statues, racism and hatred. We shouldn’t simply just go back to that state. We have to continue to move forward.

I think it’s amazing that we haven’t heard anything else about those events that occurred before Harvey as if they never existed or mattered. Honestly,

it didn’t matter. None of it mattered because it never should have started.

We never should have gotten to that point, and with all of the compassion that has been shown across the nation.

How could we ever go back to that?

Why would we want to? Is it just a matter of time before something else occurs? I pray not. If anything, Harvey has showed us that we are so much better together than divided. In times like these, we have to continue to be there for one another. We have to look at each other as people, and nothing less.

The last week has been extremely emotional. During the flood, it was really hard seeing many people lose everything, and so many times I felt helpless. I was blessed to not have any damage to my home, but it was still a frightening experience. As anyone else, I felt a roller coaster of emotions that continued to pain me. For those who have lost their lives because of this storm was even more devastating. This is even more of a reason why we have to stay together. So the question is, can we continue with the love and compassion that has been shown nation-wide, or do we go back to hating one another and fighting over nonsense? Or can we act like we have some sense and come out of this storm stronger than ever?

I read a quote that stuck out to me by Ralph Waldo Emerson that stated, “The real reason why the world lacks unity, and lies broken and in heaps, is, because man is disunited with himself.” The few words in this quote are very deep and powerful. The meaning goes beyond the simplicity that may seem to linger on the surface.

Is man really disunited with himself?

Is that the reason why unity is so hard to form because of man being broken with himself?

oping with life in the aftermath of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey is taking a mental toll on us all.

The displacement, the fatigue, the death, the losses of neighborhoods, property, furniture and years of memories on a massive scale is monumental.

It opens the gates for life’s other problems and anxieties to come in on top of the shock of losing everything and that further compounds the problem.

In a city already packed with heavy traffic problems, political friction, a slowing economy, job losses and road rage incidents, Houston needs to stop for a moment, take a deep breath and exhale.

This is not your ordinary issues that affects one small economic or social group. It is a huge problem

POST STORM WITHDRAWAL & ISOLATION NOT THE ANSWER Your problems many be individual, but one of the first things to understand when you wonder about what next is to recognize that you are not alone. We are all in this together.

One report involved Karen Winston, a clinical social worker.

She is just one of several mental and behavioral health officials working the George R. Brown Convention Center.

She and another 16 psychiatrists have been on hand talking to hundreds of survivors.

According to Winston, she has been meeting with Harvey’s victims to walk them through the trauma and help those who arrived with preexisting mental health disorders get the medications that may have been lost in the storm.

Her reports are numbing because some are feeling dejected, lost, confused and without purpose. “They’re suffering,” she said. “We tell them, ‘We see you, you matter and you’re here.”

Protection in the Flood

urricane Harvey came through the Gulf of Mexico, turned into a tropical storm, and dropped a record amount of rain on our low lying Houston streets and neighborhoods. The drenching, constant rain caused major flooding in our area. We had so much rain that one week later, we are still inundated with flood water in some areas while cleanup begins in other areas of town. With a great do-it-yourself spirit, we are tasked with removing drywall and wet carpet, attempting to get our homes and lives back on track.

We must remember to protect ourselves during the clean-up process.

The stagnant flood water harbors many forms of bacteria and other organisms, including tetanus. What is tetanus? It is caused by a bacteria called Clostridium tetani, a naturally occurring organism in soil, manure, and dust. This bacteria

is transferred into the water, as flood waters rise. If you are cut with a rusty nail or other metal object, a tetanus booster shot would be necessary, if you have not had your boosters regularly (usually every 10 years). However, if you do not have any cuts or open skin areas, then you will not need a tetanus booster. For specific instances, seek care from your doctor, who can determine if and when a tetanus booster is needed.

Gloves and face masks are common protective gear, however shoes are important as well. Pursuing a clean-up project of a flood infested home should not include flip flops or sandals as foot wear. Sturdy shoes with firm thick soles, preferably work boots, are better to wear with proper socks to better protect your feet.

If you or someone you know has an open wound, cut, or sore, and had

overwhelmed and anxious. Others still don’t know where to turn or how to cope with the aftermath of the storm because other storms were already brewing or raging in their lives.

According to Winston, sometimes there’s compounded trauma after disasters, such as people who recently went through a divorce or may have been sexually assaulted. Going through a natural disaster may heighten that trauma, she said, and psychological disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder or depression could develop.

HOLDING IT ALL IN IS NOT THE ANSWER. Winston said it is important to come to grips with what has happened in Houston and reach out and talk to someone – Share that pain, frustration or concerns you have by talking to a pastor or close friend or family member. It is a good way to begin the steps to address the trauma too.

“If you hold it in, you can get sick from holding it in,” Winston added.

However, if that dressing was soiled by the flood water, it must be cared for immediately. Wounds not cared for properly can lead to further infection, amputation, sepsis, or death.

Take care of yourself and seek assistance if you need help. Protect yourself from puncture wounds or cuts to your hands and feet. We are Houston Strong and will prevail!

Thank You President Trump for Making America Great Again

hile many may criticize President Trump for fueling the long-standing debate about whether or not the Confederate monuments and other symbols of hate across the country should be removed, we must give him credit for bringing about an unprecedented awareness to everyone here in America. The atrocities suffered by Blacks for the sake of advancement of all mankind has been brought to the table again for discussion and it is a huge table. Millions of United States citizens, of all races, now have a desire to know more about those egregious crimes committed against Blacks by Whites during the antebellum period and post Civil War. In 2010, the Texas State Board of Education adopted statewide standards to downplay the importance of slavery as being the major reason behind the start of the Civil War; instead, with our new standardized textbooks, it now appears as if the fight for sectionalism and states’ rights were the main causes of the war. This sort of approach to studying American history, further emboldens descendants of Confederates with the belief that their forefathers’ fight, was indeed a noble one. Other critics say Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson are depicted as moral mirror images of each other in these new books.

Several weeks ago, a young woman lost her life at a rally in Charlottesville which unexpectedly pitted White nationalists and supporters of all things Confederate, against protesters who showed up at the rally to take a stand against them. As footage of the truck which plowed into the crowd, kept being played over and over again across social media sites, long time proponents of the removal of Confederate statues here in the United States and other symbols or monuments of hate, began to uncover their history for all the world to see. As the number of these stories began to swell, resulting in a social media blitz, city officials all across the country began to

scramble to keep their residents from taking matters into their own hands.

Unfortunately for the government, the PEOPLE decided rather than wait for due process, they would take matters into their own hands and began to deface and topple statues on their own.

And while most Blacks agree it’s time for the removal of monuments which remind us of how truly racially divided we are as a nation, some Blacks are in opposition to them. Recently, former City of Dallas Councilmember Sandra Crenshaw, held a press conference at the AfricanAmerican Museum in Dallas at Fair Park to let the public know she will be serving as a liaison between the African-American community and This is Texas Freedom Force (TITFF.org) while they prepare for their Protest Rally at Pioneer Park on Saturday, September 16, 2017. In a separate interview, Ms. Crenshaw told the news she is not afraid of confederate statues, but there should be due process before any of the monuments are removed. She has asked the TITFF if Blacks who are interested in preserving their Southern Heritage can participate in the rally. The TITFF.org website displays the following: “This is Texas Freedom Force is committed to protecting Texas ans Texas History.

Whether is be standing firm Texas Monuments, ensuring that Texan’s rights are protected or simply making sure that left wing groups don’t get out of line, you can guarantee that TITFF will be there fighting for Texas.”

A few days after the Charlottesville riot, the New York Times published an article entitled, “Antebellum Hero, but to Whom” where they provided details about the so-called “Father of Gynecology”, Dr. J. Marion Sims.

Today his statue stands in Central Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

However, many are wondering why it is there at all, because of the way in which J. Marion Sims conducted his research.

“Doesn’t President Trump sound a lot like King James?”

“

Monarchy is the greatest thing on earth. Kings are rightly called gods since just like God they have power of life and death over all their subjects in all things. They are accountable to God only… so it is a crime for anyone to argue about what a king can do.”

This quote was once stated by the renowned King James I (King James VI), ruler of England and Scotland. This distinguished and intelligent mastermind was responsible for authorizing and financing the production of the Holy Bible as it is known, according to the King James Version. Though he did not personally translate its contents, he is accredited to its’ distribution; which has become the world’s leading most published book to date.

We MUST Understand that although the words, “monarchy” and “kings” are completely differing terms in respect to the powers that are meant to govern the United States of America; it appears that in this present-day, they are synonymous with the administration that is currently in charge. While space will not allow me to get into the variations of similarities noted amongst both leaders, I urge our readers to do a history check on the man who was responsible for authorizing the most famous book ever produced. I encourage our readers to run reference on the lives of both King James and President Donald Trump and determine within, if in fact these men have distinguishing personalities that reflect the same?

Accordingly, I find it relevant to define four terms for our readers understanding, which I believe are imperative to comprehending the nature of the irony between the correlation of both leaders. These terms include: “monarchy”, “democracy”, “king” and “president”. According

to Webster’s Dictionary, these terms are best described by the following definitions. Monarchy is an “undivided rule or absolute sovereignty by a single person”. Democracy on the other hand is, “a government by the people whereas the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation, usually involving periodically held free elections.” Furthermore, a king is a, “male monarch of a major territorial unit; especially: one whose position is hereditary and who rules for life”.

Finally, a president is, “an elected official serving as both chief of state and chief political executive in a republic having a presidential government.”

Now, I’m not the most wisest or intelligent man alive but based off of good ole’ genuine “common-sense” as some folks would say, President Trump surely does remind me a lot of King James, of England and Scotland.

Donald Trump’s actions, characters and decisions reflect the tone that, “I’m the president… the most powerful man in charge… I do what I want, to whoever I want… how I want and ain’t nobody going to do or say a d*&% thing to me… If they do, it still doesn’t matter… Because I am the one with the executive power. I make my own law and rules… F*&% all y’all, I’m the president and you just got to live with it… If the media come at me… I’ll make a video and slam they a&% down like a world wrestler… I don’t want any immigrants here… so I’ll repeal prior executive laws and send they a@$ back to where they come from…

You don’t like the way I run MY COUNTRY or try to ‘TRUMP’ up charges against me??? I’ll fire your a*^!”

Many people are unaware of how the (Holy Bible) King James Version came to be, but it is a very interesting tale. Even in his day, King James controlled the media.

one of the most intelligent leaders to ever rule in history, he was clearly a dictator with no regard for anyone who opposed him and his rule of thumb.

He separated church and state and declared that his version was the absolute. Many things in a different fashion that occurred during the leadership of King James over three centuries ago are reoccurring now. He even initiated a revolt of which his own son, who was to be next in line to serve as king following his reign, was killed. So though the times may be different as well as the circumstances and regions of era, ultimately I would like to persuade our readers to do homework and determine if King James sounds a lot like our current Commander-inChief, to you?

Donald Trump like King James is one who was born into wealth, simply by inheritance. Neither one of these men had to pay a price for their roles as leaders, because the price was paid through their birthright. But, then again King James did record in his Bible that, “…money answereth all things” Ecclesiastes 10:19. However, the differing variables which exist amongst the two leaders are that King James was justified in his stance because he governed his nations under the proper function, a monarch.

Kings serve with absolute power in a monarchy. But, here in the United States we are supposed operate under

a democracy, governed by the people with the executive privilege bestowed to the “elected” president. So once again, I ask our readers, “Doesn’t President Trump sound a lot like King James?

HOUSTON – This month the state of Texas, all the way from Corpus Christi to the other side of Louisiana experienced something that I have never witnessed in my life. The wrath of Hurricane Harvey left total devastation throughout the region, with as much as 51 inches of flooding. So far it has been indicated as the, wettest tropical cyclone on record in the nation. Thousands of people have been affected by the Category 4 major hurricane, of which many have become displaced, victims of unemployment, injured, mentally and emotionally scared and consequently lives have been lost.

As publisher of AfricanAmerican News&Issues, I would like to first send my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, including Houston Police Department, Sergeant Perez and the many others.

As it is, our publication has existed for decades as an avenue of highlighting and addressing current and historical realities affecting our communities.

However, this torrential storm is one that has leveled the playing field from all economic statuses – from poor folks to well-off folks. Therefore, I have to state that this is really trying times for our community and I truly have some major concerns. With so many members within our communities, who have yet to recover from the fury of Hurricane Katrina, I am truly concerned as to the effects that this current hurricane will have on our people. Will our community get a fair deal out of this? Who will be served first and who will be left out on an island to fend for themselves?

At the present, it has yet to be determined the full extent of services that will be needed for OUR PEOPLE to be made whole again. Hence, we cannot afford to sit idle and wait on the government and other agencies to tend to the needs of OUR PEOPLE, during such a critical time as this.

This is why I have a major concern in regards to many of our Black leaders of the church. It is time out for praying and time for work! OUR PEOPLE need action; they need to see some results of the countless nickels and dimes that they have poured into your collection plates, week after week, for decades. So if you think I’m being a bit harsh, I’ll try to put it in a tone you TX- 4

can understand… “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” James 2:17.

Cover Story came. Back when I was growing up, that is what the Black church was all about. In our communities all of the Black businesses, schools, leaders, entertainers, teachers and everybody who was anybody Black, came out of the Black church. Though they had no other place to come out of because they were not allowed to practice their professions and/or render their services elsewhere; the fact remains that the church was the church, then. During those days, the Black church helped OUR PEOPLE. The Black leaders

help the community out with the little pennies they had then, certainly you Black preachers can sacrifice some of your thousands and millions, right now. Right now, OUR PEOPLE need food, clothing, shelter, finances as well as; spiritual, mental and emotional guidance and stability, during this trying time. So, I strongly urge our Black preachers to get off of it and take some of the wealth that you have made off of OUR PEOPLE and help them.

Now, many of you Black preachers have ate very well off of OUR PEOPLE. You have driven your nice, big shiny cars off of OUR PEOPLE. You live in lavish and immaculate homes off of OUR PEOPLE. You have flown in your helicopters and travelled the world off of OUR PEOPLE. If they were able to help you to build your massive churches, then certainly you can call in some favors and let them know your people need help now. Now is the time, to put all of that faith-talk into action-walk. If you don’t really know how to approach them or communicate with them on this level, I’ll give you a few pointers and break it down real simple for you to translate. Like many of them, I’m a business man and like businessmen, I like to see a return on my investments. So just tell the White folks who control you that your people have put into their funds and right now they are in a state, where they need some of their money back. Tell them OUR PEOPLE need to see a return on their investments.

Concluding, I really want to reiterate to our Black preachers that OUR PEOPLE don’t need to hear your prayers, encouraging words and assurance that God is going to make a way right now. God is not going to drop timber and money from heaven when he has already blessed the people to bless His church so that it may be used in acts of benevolent efforts such as this. We MUST Understand occurrences such as: hurricanes, tornadoes and natural disasters are all zoned as, acts of God. So if God causes something to come upon His people, He has already provided within His people the means and the resources to bail them out of whatever life’s circumstances may bring upon them. We cannot preach and tell OUR PEOPLE that angels are going to descend down from Heaven to cut sheetrock and restore mold-infested homes and provide finances for loss work, baby food, replace sentimental memorabilia and accommodate various other physical and unseen restorations, because that’s why He has you in place. So time out for you preaching to them to just have faith, they need to see that you will demonstrate some works too. Because once again…

WHAT IS THE DANGER?

Be mindful of personal safety during flood cleanup.

Take steps to stay safe.

The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains at Level 1 (Maximum Readiness).

HCOHSEM will continue to monitor forecasts and weather developments along with the National Weather Service and the Harris County Flood Control District.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: Protect yourself from injuries during cleanup by wearing: • Hard hats • Goggles

Heavy work gloves Waterproof boots with steel toes Earplugs or headphones (if you’re working with noisy equipment)

Prevent Illness after a Disaster • Clean up, disinfect, and practice good hygiene to avoid illness from bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew.

• Get medical care if you are injured, sick, or having trouble coping with stress.

• To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, only use generators, pressure washers, grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices outside and away from open windows, doors, and air vents.

• Stay cool and drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illness.

Pace Yourself during Clean Up • Cleaning up your home can be a big job.

Be sure to take care of yourself:

Rest when you need to.

Decide which cleanup tasks are most important, and focus on those first. That way, you’re less likely to be overwhelmed.

Get help lifting heavy or bulky objects. If you lift too much on your own, you could hurt yourself.

Try to work with other people, so you aren’t alone.

Get support from family members, friends, counselors, or therapists.

HOUSTON - It is said that the Mother Africa experience stimulates an indescribable connection with a rich heritage history and powerful ancestors.

For Dr. Carlos R. Phillips II, his Africa experience left him not only with a greater appreciation for simple things taken for granted in America, but also moved his spirit to want to make a difference in the developing nation of Zimbabwe.

He recalled being in the country and walking down the street seeing women and small children carrying buckets of water and it dawned on him that Americans are very blessed and it inspired his dream to connect the youth and make a difference in that African nation.

However, according to Phillips, the heart, desire and the plans for implementing the project are in place, but making it a reality is the greatest challenges the students face.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. However, much in lacking in the area of proving adequate electricity and water in a growing and diverse economy.

Reflecting, Phillips shared his perceptions of the people and students from that country and was impressed about their love for learning, America and education.

“Lights on or lights off, these kids are serious about their education,” he said. “They desire to

“We have to raise $150,000 by October 16th in order to make this happen,” he said. “I believe this is a project that takes Booker T Washington students to the next level because it is the first steps in creating a school where we create global students and global graduates who will have better understanding of world views and how to impact society and make a difference.”

The Houston Independent School District supports the collaboration, but is unable to help fund the global student initiative.

The plan is an extension of a collaboration between BTW students and Zimbabwe-Rydings College students that was started earlier this year.

Earlier this year, the students came from Africa, visited and worked with the students on water and electricity projects and that along with Phillip’s trip to Africa helped shape and develop the idea to do the quality of life improvement project.

Rydings students visited Houston for the purpose of learning more about science and technology During that time, about 50 classmates to took part in the first international collaborative learning project between Rydings College, and Booker T. Washington High School.

Since the visit the collaboration has continued and has remained serious and strong with the two groups staying in contact via email and Skype and are planning and laying out the next phases of the project.

Phillips is hoping that corporations, churches and individuals who support children and educations will step forward in a big way to help fund this great effort to build economic bridges, nurture future diplomatic efforts and help offer hope for the future for the people living in those cities and villages.

VISION AND MISSION “We expect our students to push themselves academically, intellectually, and socially in preparation for leadership in an ever-changing global society,” Phillips said. “We encourage our students to take full advantage of every opportunity to look at the world through informed eyes and broaden their horizons by actively embracing

Phillips said the plan is to use the funding to help fund 30 students from the school’s STEM Program, Engineering Magnate and traditional programs along with 10 faculty members to make the trip and travel to the country and roll up sleeves to work with 35 students from Zimbabwe on wind and water projects that each group has been communicating and working together on it for the past year.

The focus will be on making the improvements using a wind turbine to generate electricity and creating a process that will result in improved water filtration techniques.

“I believe this is an experience that is an investment in leadership that will take the students to the next level,” he said. “It is important that our children know and understand how others live and survive around the world. This firsthand look will truly be an eyeopening experience.”
