Although I do not claim possession of the best memory, I do remember the moment that I received the notice that Texas was seeking individuals to review a parcel of history/social studies textbooks that its school children may be using over the next decade. I eagerly submitted my name for the duty, considering it a wonderful opportunity to participate in a long-standing African-American tradition of “to whom much is given, much is required.” From my perspective, this was a phenomenal opportunity to serve African-American school children by guaranteeing that their ancestors’ storied history was represented in school history/social studies textbooks during the coming decade. I thought that I would be a shoe-in for this volunteer duty as I am a tenured History Professor who has earned Master of Arts degrees in African-American/ African Studies, U.S. History, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in History from The Ohio State University. My assessment could not have been more wrong; I was not selected to serve on what to me was a very important committee as it would ultimately recommend which textbooks that the Texas State Board of Education should use going forward.
