Hon. Albert Ely Edwards The Modern Father of Juneteenth in Texas

Juneteenth 2017 State Representative, Hon. Albert Ely Edwards was born in Houston, Texas on March 19, 1937. Edwards is the sixth child out of the sixteen children born to Reverend E. L. Edwards, Sr. and Josephine Radford Edwards. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School and attended Texas Southern University, earning his B.A. degree in 1966.

JUNETEENTH IS THE OLDEST KNOWN CELEBRATION COMMEMORATING THE ENDING OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES.

At the age of forty-one, Edwards entered politics and was elected to the Texas State Legislature from Houston’s House District 146. His first major goal was to ensure the establishment of a holiday that recognized the emancipation of slavery.

In 1979, legislation recognizing Juneteenth Day, initiated by Edwards, passed the Texas State Legislature and was signed into law.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday in fourteen states of the United States.

Celebrated on June 19th, it commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas.

“STOP THIS CRAZY THING” The Black Whisperer Darwin Campbell, Senior Journalist

A

historically Black college in Memphis recently held a “Black-on-Black crime forum” exploring causes and solutions, but it was the term “Black-on-Black crime” use that dominated the discussion.

The goal was to defer the term as old and archaic and blame the media for coining and using the phrase “Black-on-Black crime” in the first place.

It concerns me when the purpose of a gathering of “eggheads” seems to raise more questions and make more excuses than providing solid useful substantive answers for issues affecting the Black community.

My Juneteenth Wish is That Black People Get Off The “Jetson Treadmill” & Stop Making Excuses WHO NEEDS “DUM-DUMS” The Illinois college professor and author of the 2005 book “Inventing Black-On-Black Violence” traces and blames the earliest uses of the term to the media — a magazine longserving African Americans and a major Chicago newspaper.

David Wilson, a geography professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said an article in Jet magazine in the 1970s about the emerging trend of “Black-on-Black violence” in American cities was the first source he found to use the phrase.

The second, in 1980-81, was a five-part series in the Chicago Tribune called “Winter Wave of Violence” that was widely read, Wilson said.

“What fed into the process I think was the 1980s. The rise of Reagan and neoconservatism and that political

persuasion was especially strong at asserting the reality of this thing called Black-on-Black violence,” Wilson said.

He thinks the term helped drive the neoconservative political agenda in the 1980s and helped fuel filling prisons with what critics call “mass incarceration” policies.

Black Community in Real Crisis

One man said “It’s so easy to get a gun or an AR-15 or an AK-47 in your community, but it’s difficult to get a driver’s license or a voter’s registration card or a quality education, those are the crime challenges that we face.”

Nationwide, a Black perpetrator was responsible in 90 percent of murders of Black victims, and a White perpetrator was responsible in 82 percent of murders of White victims, FBI statistics for 2014 show.

There are real visible problems affecting our communities nationwide.

We are robbing each other; We are killing each other; We are hurting one another; We have absent fathers; We have unemployment, gang influences and violence and breakdowns in family structures that have impacted who we are and in the process of defining who we are becoming as a race.

Hopelessness is at an all time high while the presence of character and values in youth are at all time low.

Take Responsibility/Blame is a Losing Game By our own hands, we have caused our people to take a brutal beating in the community and as a result of allowing those slip ups, the Black community has sown the wind and we are now reaping the whirlwind.

It is pitiful to make excuses for our bad behavior over just taking full responsibility for the parts we have played in creating a generation that has little respect for God, Church, Black History or the old grandmothers and grandfathers, great aunts and uncles living amongst us.

ONLY LOVE FOR BLACK HISTORY CAN PRESERVE THE FLAMES OF FREEDOM BURNING IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN HEARTS

O

n June 19, 1939, when she was 12, a White mob burned and looted her family home on East Annie Street to drive them out of a mostly White neighborhood. Fourteen city, county and state police units were at the scene, but the officers took no action.

Now at 90, one of her latest memorable accomplishments for Opal Lee was her latest walk to the nation’s Capitol. It was an inspiring journey across the South that elevated her from local to a national civil-rights icon.

Lee, a retired schoolteacher and counselo,r has a passion to make June 19 — “Juneteenth” — a federal holiday of freedom.

Her desire is at 90 is inspiring and the kind of flame needed to light a fire under leaders in the Black community. Lee has put her money where her mouth is and is doing far more than paying lip service to the sacrifices and the rich contributions, culture and heritage that is in the Black community.

By visibly calling attention to the need for a national Juneteenth holiday, she becomes a spark to ignite the interest of our young people to investigate that history and understand how it relates to making

us who we are.

We MUST Understand and never forget the greats who have come before us and paved the way for our success.

Lee is making her own statement to the Black community, Texas, the United States and the world that Black history means something. Her walk sends a strong message that Black history is far more important than focusing on it one month out of each year.

Juneteenth was only the beginning of greatness for Blacks. The shortened era of Reconstruction demonstrated the talents, skills, knowledge and wisdom that came from slave culture.

We MUST Understand that we are the offspring of Kings, Queens, great leaders and brilliant scientific minds who have walked this planet.

Black people have owned farms, has successful businesses, researched and found cures for illnesses, built many breathtaking pieces of architecture and created and invented many useful things we often take for granted. We MUST Understand Black people that we are a great people!!!

We must rescue ourselves from our own depressing slump that has taken our communities down and fight back to regain the mighty momentum that brought us the likes of George Washington Carver, Bessie Coleman, Robert Smalls, Noble Drew Ali, Benjamin Singleton, Martin Delaney, Henry McNeal Turner, Elijah McCoy, Nina Simone, Martin Luther King Jr. and many others.

We MUST Understand

Lee’s mission is a vision. It represents how great we are as a people, how far we have come and how we have the power to be great again as a people. Our greatness is present here and now, but We as a Black people must seize our opportunities now.

Other races and ethnic groups get it and are doing just that.

How many of us are willing to complete a four-month tour leading walks more than 100 miles in cities from Texas to North Carolina for the cause of making a statement about greatness, history and freedom?

Lee’s spirit demonstrates the success combining desire with the power of Black History with Freedom.

We MUST Understand that like Lee, the desire for survival and economic freedom must burn in our hearts like the flame that burns in hers.

Are we willing to sacrifice to promote and preserve AfricanAmerican freedom for the next generation?

Lee is an unsung Black hero. She deserves love and support for how she lights the way to knowledge.

Her sacrifices at age 90 must not go unnoticed and must not be forgotten.

We MUST Understand that our survival depends on each of us having the same kind of fire in our bones.

Cover Story Settling into these new areas as free men and women brought on new realities and the challenges of establishing a heretofore non-existent status for black people in America.

Recounting the memories of that great day in June of 1865 and its festivities would serve as motivation as well as a release from the growing pressures encountered in their new territory.

The celebration of June 19th was coined “JUNETEENTH” and grew with more participation from descendants.

The Juneteenth celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members.

TEXAS BLAZES THE TRAIL On January 1, 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday through the efforts of Al Edwards, an African American state legislator.

The successful passage of this bill marked Juneteenth as the first emancipation celebration granted official state recognition. Edwards has since actively sought to spread the observance of Juneteenth all across America.

HISTORY Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led

by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.

The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong TX- 4

enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another, is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another, is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

All of which, or neither of these version could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln’s authority over the rebellious states was in question For whatever the reasons, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.

THE FAMOUS GENERAL ORDER NUMBER 3 One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with:

“

The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”

The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former ‘masters’ attesting to the varying conditions on the plantations and the realization of freedom.

Even with nowhere to go, many felt that leaving the plantation would be their first grasp of freedom. North was a logical destination and for many it represented true freedom, while the desire to reach family members in neighboring states drove the some into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades later, with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS DECLINE Economic and cultural forces provided for a decline in Juneteenth activities and participants beginning in the early 1900’s.

Classroom and textbook education in lieu of traditional home and familytaught practices stifled the interest of the youth due to less emphasis and detail on the activities of former slaves.

Classroom text books proclaimed Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863 as the date signaling the ending of slavery - and little or nothing on the impact of General Granger’s arrival on June 19th.

The Depression forced many people off the farms and into the cities to find work. In these urban environments, employers were less eager to grant leaves to celebrate this date.

Thus, unless June 19th fell on a weekend or holiday, there were very few participants available. July 4th was the already established Independence holiday and a rise in patriotism steered more toward this celebration.

TTexas exas •• August June 1212-18, - 18, 2017 2013 RESURGENCE The Civil Rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s yielded both positive and negative results for the Juneteenth celebrations. While it pulled many of the African American youth away and into the struggle for racial equality, many linked these struggles to the historical struggles of their ancestors. This was evidenced by student demonstrators involved in the Atlanta civil rights campaign in the early 1960’s, whom wore Juneteenth freedom buttons.

Again in 1968, Juneteenth received another strong resurgence through Poor Peoples March to Washington D.C.. Rev. Ralph Abernathy’s call for people of all races, creeds, economic levels and professions to come to Washington to show support for the poor.

Many of these attendees returned home and initiated Juneteenth celebrations in areas previously absent of such activity. In fact, two of the largest Juneteenth celebrations founded after this March are now held in Milwaukee and Minneapolis.

JUNETEENTH FESTIVITIES AND FOOD A range of activities were provided to entertain the masses, many of which continue in tradition today. Rodeos, fishing, barbecuing and baseball are just a few of the typical Juneteenth activities you may witness today.

Juneteenth almost always focused on education and self improvement.

Thus, often guest speakers are brought in and the elders are called upon to recount the events of the past. Prayer services were also a major part of these celebrations.

Certain foods became popular and subsequently synonymous with Juneteenth celebrations such as strawberry soda-pop. More traditional and just as popular was the barbecuing, through which Juneteenth participants could share in the spirit and aromas that their ancestors - the newly emancipated African Americans, would have experienced during their ceremonies.

Stirs Celebrations of History, Culture, Self Determination and Highlights Need for New UHURU

The ideals of African Internationalism promote freedom from oppression and injustice. These ideals promote freedom and independence.” - Omali Yeshitela

In 1986, Edwards also founded Operation Justus, a community faith-based organization that serves as a referral service for persons with social problems and concerns. Edwards was also arrested in Houston and went to jail for peacefully demonstrating against apartheid in South Africa in 1987.

During the Bill Clinton administration, he was often invited to the White House as the guest of President Bill and Hillary Clinton. I In May 1994, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the African American Biographic Association in Atlanta, Georgia . Al Edwards was elected Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Black Caucus and held that position for six years.

He was Vice-Chairman for ten years.

Reverend Edwards received his Doctorate of Divinity from World Bible Christian University in San Antonio.

In 1999, Al Edwards was appointed Chairman of Texas Emancipation Juneteenth Cultural and Historical Commission by Governor George Bush.

While serving in the legislature, he has had the distinct honor of serving with Governor George Bush, who would later become the President of the United States of America.

Edwards left the Texas legislature in 2007 after twenty-eight years of serving the people of District 146. As a veteran member of the Texas Legislature, Edwards served on three influential committees.

He was the Chairman of the Rules and Resolutions Committee, Chairman of Budget and Oversight of the Ways and Means Committee and a member of the Appropriations Committee.

The Uhuru Movement The Uhuru Movement is a worldwide organization, under the leadership of African People’s Socialist Party, uniting African people as one people for liberation, social justice, self-reliance and economic development.

Understanding that Black people everywhere are part of the African nation, the Uhuru Movement has built worldwide organizations for economic and political self-reliance. Uhuru is a Swahili term that means “freedom”.

In every region of the world, the Uhuru unites African people to defend the rights of African people everywhere.

Awareness of Uhuru is Houston will be fully showcased on Juneteenth (June 17) at the 5th annual Juneteenth Freedom and Music Festival at 3707 Brill Street in the 5th Ward Community Garden from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Leading the list of dignified speakers is Omali Yeshitela, chairman and founder of the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) and honorable leader of the Uhuru movement. Yeshitela is one of the most profound and respected spokesman on the African and Black issues in the community around the country.

The celebratory event is sponsored by the All African People’s Development Project’s (AAPDEP) 5th Ward Garden and the International People’s Democrative Uhuru Movement (InPDUM) “This will also be a day of serious discussion on the plight of African people all over the world,” said festival spokesperson Omawale Kefing. “In 2017, we are are still not a free people. Our dire economic situation and the deadly relationship in the Black community with the police throughout this country attest to this.”

According to Kefing, one of the major goals of Juneteenth Not yet Uhuru is to build the One Africa! One Nation! Marketplace! - a permanent venue where African people can promote their own economic development enterprises.

“Equally important is this will be a day of economic development for the Black community,” he said. “It will be a day that we shop among ourselves and our resources stay in our community.”

The event also features African drumming and dance, Gospel, Rap, Hip-Hop, Spoken Word

artists, arts and crafts vendors and food native to the Black and African communities.

Also, in addition to fun and games for the kids, there will be a fantastic line-up of music led by “Tighten Up” fame R&B artist Archie Bell and super Reggae Band Idiginis and R&B big band Ray Williams and the Majortones, Precision, along with the Hardest Working Man in Show Business with the James Brown Review.

About Uhuru Leader Chairman Yeshitela (then known as Joseph Waller) has never stopped fighting for freedom for African people everywhere. Mobilized in his youth by anti-colonial movements around the world and the struggle for Black liberation inside the U.S., Yeshitela dedicated his life to uniting and liberating Africa and African people everywhere.

In the heat of revolutionary struggle and during his early years as a political prisoner, Yeshitela was driven to discover the reasons why

Black people all over the world are impoverished and oppressed. Yeshitela developed the political theory of African Internationalism that understands the world through the eyes of the African working class.

Yeshitela contends that the leading force of struggle is the African and oppressed working class throughout the world against “parasitic capitalism,” embodied in U.S. and Western imperialism built on enslavement, genocide and colonialism.

In 1972, Yeshitela formed the African People’s Socialist Party which he chairs. He built the worldwide Uhuru Movement and the African Socialist International with branches now active in the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean and on the continent of Africa. It was founded at a time when the Black Liberation Movement had been dismantled and destroyed as a movement and in a climate of political terror and brutal repression.

Aims and Objectives The aims and objectives of the APSP-USA are to lead the struggle of the African working class and oppressed masses against U.S. capitalistcolonialist domination and all the manifestations of oppression and exploitation that result from this relationship. The Party recognizes that the particular character of the oppression of African people within U.S. borders is domestic or internal colonialism. From 1-3pm: There will be free workshops hosted by Friends of Emancipation Park: including information on Healthy Living , a Free Legal Clinic and a Genealogy Workshop On Monday, The City of Houston’s Emancipation Park 145th JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION will get underway and will include The City of Houston Emancipation Park Re-dedication Ceremony featuring Mayor Sylvester Turner, and other key city, county, state and national officials. Also, local organizations and many special guests will be followed by a continuation of the City’s Juneteenth Arts and Entertainment Festival Celebration in the park In recognition of the historical significance of Emancipation Park, the City’s celebration of the park’s redevelopment has been rescheduled to Juneteenth weekend 2017.

The Emancipation Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department will host a celebration of the park redevelopment with a ceremony and festivities on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

The end of the Civil War resulted in a dramatic reorganization of society throughout the former Confederacy, including new freedom for the slaves. President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation and published it on January 1, 1863, but it did not reach Texas for two years. It wasn’t until General Granger proclaimed it in Galveston on June 19, 1865 that Texas got the news.

The anniversary of the day took on festive traditions and a new name: it came to be known as Juneteenth.

Over the next few years, African-American populations across Texas collected money to buy property dedicated to Juneteenth celebrations.

In Houston, the effort was led by the Reverend Jack Yates, a Baptist minister and

Yates is remembered today through the high school with his name and his home, restored as part of the collection of historical buildings in Sam Houston Park. His church, Antioch Baptist, and Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church formed the Colored People’s Festival and Emancipation Park Association. In 1872, they pooled $800 to put down on ten acres of open land as home for their Juneteenth celebration. In honor of their freedom, they named it Emancipation Park.

Twentieth Century at Emancipation Park In 1918, it had been acquired by the City of Houston. Racial segregation was the law of the land, and Emancipation Park was the only municipal park African-Americans could use at that time.

In 1939, Miss Annette Finnigan, a veteran of the push for women’s suffrage, donated property to the city for a second one, which became Finnigan Park.

Also in 1939, the WPA undertook the construction of a community center building in Emancipation Park. Designed by William Ward Watkin, the fine new facility was dedicated at the Juneteenth Celebration on June 18-19, 1939 and now provides greater recreational and educational programs for the users of the park. In 1976, the Association for Study of Afro-American Life and History donated a plaque dedicated to Rev. Yates, which is displayed at the entrance to the community center.

And On Into the Twenty-first…

Over the years, many improvements have taken place in the park, resulting in a fine recreational facility. In 1998, the Parks to Standards program resulted in extensive renovations. In 2013, a plan was undertaken to improve the community center and swimming facility and to build a new building and a grand entranceway.

Construction is underway.

Today, Emancipation Park boasts tennis courts, a basketball court, a large combined softball/football field, a picnic area, exercise equipment, a playground, a huge swimming pool, and, of course, the community center. It is surrounded by the busy city, and is in constant use.

Many families celebrate Juneteenth there every year, as well as birthdays, family reunions, and picnics together in the great outdoors.

Set aside to commemorate events of the Nineteenth Century, Emancipation Park continues to serve its neighborhood today.

It stands as a monument to the pride and hope that the founding members of the Colored People’s Festival and Emancipation Park Association felt as they stood with their backs to slavery and their faces turned to the future.

SAN ANTONIO - Is is over reaction or just another story in a laundry list of complaints against some police officers across the country who seem more interested in a “power tripping” rather than protecting and serving.

Lastest Incident Raises Questions of Trust

The latest incident in San Antonio involving the police handling and treatment of a 14year old Black female teen is being met with

criticism, concern and protest that the distaste for answering calls and dealing with issues relating to Black people appears to rear its ugly head in the personalities of officers and has now trickled down and that resentment appears to be aimed now too at Black youth.

Taj Matthews, executive director of the Claude & ZerNona Black Development Leadership Foundation, helped to release the child and went to court.

His take on the situation is that there are deeper trust issues that need solving in San Antonio.

“The issue is that I have never seen anything like this,” he said. “San Antonio should really be outraged. One particular officer punched her in the face. The whole situation

does not make any sense to me… I believe the majority of our police officer get up every morning and put on their uniform with pride.

They want to serve and protect their community. But there are bad officers that need to be removed and to be held accountable as they not serving and protecting with honor.”

A disturbing video reveals how a San Antonio police officer seen suddenly lunging and savagely punching at a 14-year old Black female. The girl on the video was arrested and charged with assault on a public servant and appeared in juvenile court According to reports, police were responding to a fight that erupted at a northeast side quinceañera. During the interaction, one witness allegedly saw and reported that she saw a San Antonio Police Department officer punch her 14-year-old daughter so hard that it required

medical attention. According to the parent, when doctors examined her some two days later, she was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury and trauma to her face and neck muscles. Some video allegedly recorded at the scene shows the officer punching the teen.

According to the SAPD department’s policy states that an officer can use physical force or an intermediate weapon if a suspect is actively being resistant. It goes on: “If circumstances allow, officers should attempt to de-escalate tense situations through ‘advisements, warnings, verbal persuasion, and other tactics’ to reduce the need for force.”

In a statement, Artessa House, one of the girl’s lawyers said the 14-year old is an honorroll student with no history of violence and did not assault the officer.

Lone Star College-Victory Center Mayor Sylvester Tuner and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Inspire Graduates at 43rd Annual Commencement Ceremony More than 800 students graduated from Lone Star College-North Harris on Friday, May 12 during the college’s 43rd annual commencement ceremony at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center in Houston.

A total of 2,426 students earned associate degrees or certificates from the college. The class of 2017 included 165 distinguished scholars from Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Psi Beta Psychology Honor Society and graduates with Honors in Research.

This was the largest graduating class in LSC-North Harris’ 43-year history as well as the largest graduating class in Lone Star College which is comprised of six colleges including LSC-North Harris. A total of 760 students earned associate of arts degrees; 304 earned Associate of Science degrees; 386 earned Associate of Applied Science degrees; 13 earned Associate of Arts in Teaching degrees and 963 earned certificates. Additionally, 74 students graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee ignited the crowd with her passionate and powerful words to the graduating class. “Some of you have had a long journey…And so my words are a challenge, that as you graduate and walk across this stage, accept not only a document of graduation, but also accept a wonderful burden of service. I want to see all of you along the highways of life serving in the way that you choose: by faith or by actual engagement in civic life working with families and neighborhoods and communities, but making a difference.

“I am looking at 800-plus success stories and I’m looking at parents and relatives that are in this room. I’m

reminded of my own background. I am a product of Acres Homes, the northside, the “fo-fo.” Neither one of my parents graduated from high school.

My daddy died of cancer when I was 13 years old. My mom, this maid who never learned how to drive, who worked as a maid at the old Rice Hotel, became the CEO of the Turner household.

Anytime a mom has to rear nine kids by herself, she deserves to be called the CEO. Although my mom is not here with me physically, I want you to know that my mom is with me every single day. And the reason, the reason that I love graduations is when I got ready to attend Harvard Law School, I needed somebody to sign the loan papers that enabled me to go. There were no doctors in my family, no lawyers. I was the first generation of the Turner family to go to somebody’s college. And, the

only person I knew that had good credit was that maid who did not graduate from high school, who took care of nine kids by herself and she signed the loan papers that enabled me to go to Harvard Law School.

When the road got rough in Acres Homes, my mom would say, ‘Sylvester, you know we don’t have the money. You know times are hard.’ But, she would say, ‘Son, tomorrow will be better than today. Just hang in there. Don’t give up.

Stay the course. Learn as much as you can and tomorrow will be better than today.’ …From Acres Homes to Austin, Texas. From Austin, Texas, to City Hall, this kid of the maid is now the mayor of the fourth largest city in America.
