Feel the Soul of Africa in the Heart of Atlanta
AFRICA ATLANTA 2014 A city wide year-long celebration of cultural and economic bonds among African, European, and American cultures in Atlanta Modeled on the highly successful France-Atlanta Initiative, Africa Atlanta 2014 has been organized by the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology in collaboration with the Consulate General of Belgium in Atlanta. Designed as a robust cross-cultural interdisciplinary collaboration of multiple stakeholders throughout the City of Atlanta, events across the metropolitan area are anchored by a remarkable art exhibition, KONGO across the WATERS. It is co-curated by the Royal Museum of Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren, Belgium, and the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida who draw from both RMCA collections and collections in the United States.
This touring exhibit opens at the University of Florida in the Fall of 2013, arrives in Atlanta in Summer 2014, and then travels to the Princeton University Art Museum and to the Museum of Art in New Orleans. The Atlanta opening is a collaboration between the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. Before, during, and after the anchor exhibition, an exciting range of complementary events organized by partners across the city and the region offer a variety of activities related to the African/European/American experience, highlighting the arts and humanities; science and technology; enterprise and innovation; education and public engagement.

A Message from Kasim Reed, Mayor of Atlanta Honorary Chair, Africa Atlanta 2014 As Mayor of Atlanta, I am proud of our cultural diversity in Atlanta and I am equally proud that our corporate and philanthropic community recognizes how important the arts are for a leading international city. With its connections across the Atlanta region and an impressive network of national and international partners, Africa Atlanta 2014 will expand our cultural and artistic offering for thousands of residents and visitors. I am pleased to serve as the Honorary Chair of the Africa Atlanta 2014 International Advisory Board, and I look forward with great anticipation to a full year of collaboration. Sincerely,
Kasim Reed Mayor of Atlanta
A Message from G. P. “Bud” Peterson President, Georgia Institute of Technology Over the past year at Georgia Tech, we have watched Africa Atlanta 2014 grow from an ambitious idea into the launch of a year-long celebration with promise to reinvent the cultural and economic bonds between the African, European and American cultures in Atlanta. With the enthusiastic leadership and guidance of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, partners near and far have joined with us to explore historic challenges and contemporary opportunities from multiple perspectives, and to celebrate - with the arts as a dynamic springboard - the vibrancy and power of Atlanta as an international city. Through synergistic collaborations, Africa Atlanta is offering programs and events with the capacity to set a new pace for the future. Establishing these types of relationships exemplifies the mission of Ivan Allen College within Georgia Tech - Innovation at the Crossroads of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Technology. We at Georgia Tech are honored to work together with others locally, nationally, and internationally to help make this grand venture a great success. G. P. “Bud” Peterson President Georgia Institute of Technology
