MPNFL Update

Bendigo Community Bank MPNFL Update Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2017 Welcome to Queen’s Birthday Weekend Round of the 2017 home and away season for both Peninsula FNL and Nepean FNL.

Themed and feature rounds coming up; 10th June 2017 - Queen’s Birthday Round 1st July 2017 – It’s ok no to be ok Round 8th July 2017 - Pink Round

Only 3 games on this weekend, Saturday sees Rye v Sorrento do battle in the Nepean FNL while over in the Peninsula FNL Chelsea take on Bonbeach. Sunday we head back to the Nepean FNL to watch Dromana take on Red Hill. As we are fast approaching the half way point, it is important to remember to take care of your volunteers. The people in your club that run around each week putting out the bins, setting up the canteen, sewing up the jumpers, stuffing advertising into the record, are the real heart and soul of our clubs. Take a moment to think about how you could take over one of these jobs at your club to help. There are plenty of ways to help. Just ask someone who is doing a job while you are standing around drinking your coffee or sitting warmly in your car waiting for the game to start. Thank you to all our volunteers. You help because you love your club and without you the costs of running a club would be much higher. A reminder that we have also officially moved to Frankston Park, in the old gaming venue. The new office number is 03 8781 1300, alternatively you can contact Shaun and Haydn on their mobiles or via email shaun@ aflse.com.au and haydn@aflse.com.au Best of luck to all sides for this weekend.

This weekends games.... Peninsula League Sat 10th - Chelsea v Bonbeach Nepean League Sat 10th - Rye v Sorrento Sun 11th - Dromana v Red Hill

Bendigo Community Bank AFL South East Senior Review Draft Recommendations Released AFL South East Region Commission is calling for industry feedback after today releasing its Senior Football Competition Review Draft Recommendations. The draft recommendations summarises feedback received by the review panel after undertaking individual consultation meetings with all senior clubs in the AFL South East region. Review panel chair and AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said that he was very pleased with the way the individual club consultations were conducted. “Clubs were open, honest and respectful during the process. The draft recommendations has been prepared to incorporate much of the feedback received and recorded during the consultation phase.” “It was encouraging to hear from a number of clubs during the consultation phase that the Commission should act in the best interests of football in the region.”

netball together at home games. However, there were a number of issues raised which need to be addressed in the next phase of the review and allowance has been made in the response document for further feedback. The 14 page paper plus schedules will be sent directly to stakeholders, but will also be available on the AFL South East website, http://www.aflsoutheast.com.au/afl-south-east-seniorcompetition-review In accordance with the Review’s Terms of Reference, clubs and other stakeholders have four weeks to respond to the options outlined in the paper. The review panel will consider the feedback before making a final recommendation to the Region Commission. Closing date for responses is Monday 3 July 2017.

John Anderson RGM AFL South East

“As a Region Commission we have a responsibility to grow and develop the game and it is imperative that any competition structure has the scope to achieve that,” Mr Anderson said. The draft recommendations provides two options for industry feedback: • A full divisional structure initially comprising three divisions with promotion/relegation between each. • A partial divisional structure also comprising three divisions, with a top division then two divisions below based on geography. Mr Anderson said the Commission believes the two options are fair and will provide much needed divisional competition between clubs. “The options not only address the concerns raised by the majority of clubs but they also strike a balance with the competing issues specific to some clubs. “It is critical that local footy evolves to meet the challenges facing our region – this direction preserves our history and sets up our future.” “Of prime importance is the ability of our league to attract new clubs to participate in the competition,” he said. All clubs were asked about the impact on netball during the consultation and a section of the paper has been devoted to issues facing local netball. There was a common thread in the feedback of retaining football and

AFL Vic Country

Bendigo Community Bank VIC COUNTRY ANNOUNCES INCLUSION SQUAD AFL Victoria has finalised its Vic Country representative squad ahead of the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival next month. Twenty of country Victoria’s best players with disability, including four emergencies have been chosen to don the Big-V jumper as they prepare to take on the top talent from across the country. Selection comes following a training session which saw over 40 regional players showcase their skills at Bendigo’s Epson Huntly Reserve yesterday. Six AFL Victoria Region Commissions are represented in the final squad, with AFL North East Border (six), AFL Western District (four), AFL Wimmera Mallee (three) and AFL Goldfields (three) boasting the most representatives. In addition, all nine country community FIDA (Football Integration Development Association) clubs are represented, with players hailing from both the CVGT Australia Northern Conference and Western Conference. Leading the squad again for the second consecutive year is coach Matt Deegan who will be keen to improve on Vic Country’s third place result from last season. Held on the Gold Coast this year, the National Inclusion Carnival is a week-long competition for footballers with an intellectual disability to compete for their state in a National Championships. For the first time, all states and territories will have a team represented in the competition, with squads from the Northern Territory and Western Australia joining regular competitors Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, NSW/ACT, Vic Metro and Vic Country. AFL Victoria FIDA Football and AAA Programs Manager, Tim Nield said the 2017 Vic Country squad is a true reflection of the best regional talent in the state. “This year we are delighted to be able to have a representative from each of our nine country FIDA clubs, which is a great achievement for all the hard work and dedication of not only the players, but their local coaches and clubs,” Nield said.

“With the establishment of our two country conferences, the opportunity for people with disability in country Victoria to participate in our game has grown significantly, which has allowed a greater talent pool for our coaches to choose a squad with. “Seeing the exciting new talent which Vic Country has selected I’m confident they will be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the pointy end of the competition.” The 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival will kick off on Monday July 24. 2017 VIC COUNTRY INCLUSION SQUAD: NAME CLUB REGION Michael Scholz Gippsland Gippsland Kelvin Walters Gippsland Gippsland Harley Locke Ballarat Goldfields Hary Hunter Ballarat Goldfields Luke Byrne South Warrnambool Western District Harrison Surtees Wodonga North East Border Jared Redcliffe Wodonga North East Border Kieran Hartwich Hamilton Western District Tom Brody Hamilton Western District Alfred Muller Wimmera Wimmera Mallee Tyson Harris Wimmera Wimmera Mallee Matt Taylor Grampians Wimmera Mallee Joshua Jose Merriwa Magpies North East Border T Rhodes-Orton Merriwa Magpies North East Border Jackson Reeves Goulburn Valley Goulburn Murray Damien Cocks Echuca Moama Goulburn Murray EMERGENCIES Evan Reeves Ballarat Goldfields James Lyons South Warrnambool Western District Tom Newton Merriwa Magpies North East Border James Eikan Merriwa Magpies North East Border SUPPORT STAFF Matt Deegan – Head Coach Gordon Godwin – Assistant Coach Dean Pritchett – Team Manager

Queen’s Birthday presents… By Toe Punt Rye and Sorrento kick-off Queen’s Birthday football as the stand-alone game on Saturday. The Demons have been playing some consistent and exciting footy over the past five weeks, winning three of their past five games, including back-to-back wins against Crib Point and Devon Meadows in successive weeks. The only two losses in that time have been a thumping at the hands of Frankston Bombers (95 points) and Somerville, where the Demons led at half time and trailed by just seven points at three quarter time before losing that one. Rye and Sorrento went head-to-head in round three, which didn’t end well for the Demons, going down by a whopping 110 points to the Sharks at David McFarlane Reserve. On that day, Sorrento restricted the Demons to just one goal in the first half while ramming home 14 majors of their own. Leigh Poholke booted six and Nick Corp five while Chris Dawes was still injured. The Sorras again proved last week (against Red Hill) that whilst you can hold a couple of their forwards, you can’t manage them all. Chris Dawes was close to signing with Rye before opting for the Sorrento deal, so he won’t feel a lot of love this afternoon. The Demons rely mainly on Tim Churchin (15), Harry Wilson (9) and Oscar Whitty (8) to kick their goals while Adam Kirkwood is a soldier either through the middle or down back. Jai Lloyd back in the fold is a good outcome also for the Demons. Whilst its highly doubtful that it will be a 100-point loss, you can expect Rye to lose by at least 10 goals this afternoon. DROMANA will be looking to continue its purple patch when it comes-up against RED HILL. The Tigers were disastrous at the beginning of the season, copping some absolute floggings, however, it has now won three matches on the trot and sits just percentage outside of the top five. Holding fifth place is Red Hill, which has proven once again that it is not in the same echelon as the top bracket teams. Frankston, Hastings and Sorrento have all beaten Red Hill quite convincingly. It did beat Rosebud in impressive fashion though – just might have got them on the right day! Up for grabs today is fifth spot! Dromana’s past three wins against Pearcedale, Crib Point and Somerville have all been significant – they have been impressive wins. Challenge now is to be competitive against a side in the top five, albeit one that is hanging-on for dear life! Red Hill will be aiming to be the best of the teams not capable of winning the flag!

2 in a row, that’s a nice feeling. Great win last week in the seniors, against a team who really came to play and at ½ time we had a real battle on our hands. Great second half and the work Chad Ambrose our fitness guru, put into the boy’s pre-season is really showing in our seconds halves. Our skipper Adam Kirkwood would have got the 3 votes from the umpires, he was sensational all day and was BOG. Jye Lloyd, welcome back and what a great game he played. Ben Trivett was magnificent down forward and in the ruck with Spider Wilson. The new # 3 Nick Rowson, Jimmy Jennings and Harry Whitty were all in the best. Massive test today against Sorrento, wouldn’t it be a great long weekend to knock them off. The reserves finally played a 4-quarter game after losing the 2 previous games when leading at ¾ time. A good team effort all round and it certainly made Tim Churchin a happy chappy Saturday night. “Banger” McLean BOG, closely followed by the skipper Doogie Howie, Will Cooper, Matt Wylie and his sidekick Josh Gana, Sam “Blood” Dow also played a blinder. The under 19’s played a very good side and certainly put up a good fight. Huge game for the boys today, to knock off a side above them on the ladder. Last week McLeod Jamieson was super, “Booga” Papalia, Richo, Goldy, Barnsy and Kurt Goss all battled hard. Past Players v Present Day players’ golf day on Sunday July 30 at Safety Beach Country Club, see Beelie to book your spot. $60 includes, golf, lunch, beers and prizes.

The Hillmen put on the weather for us last week, it was one of those rare days we’re you drive up through the clouds and find the sun shining. We thought the sun was shining on our 19’s too. We had the better of them for 3 quarters but couldn’t hold on. It was a much better effort though and no doubt the next win is just around the corner if we bring that level each week. The Scoobs were tested big time which was great and got a win when not at their best. It’s always a tough gig on the Hill and with some key players missing this task got bigger. The boys were good though and hung on for a gutsy victory. The seniors were keen to perform well against a potential finalist and it was a good 4 quarter performance. There’s never any love lost between these 2 combatants and we know a Blackers led side won’t roll over. So to come away with the 4 points and no injuries was a good day. So today we’re at our much loved neighbours, a club we respect but love to beat. If there are only 2 games you can win in a home and away season 1 is Rye at home, the other is Rye away. Let’s make sure we complete the second part of the puzzle today. Thought of the week: Do twins realise that one of them wasn’t planned!

Our Annual Queen’s Birthday Sunday Clash against Red Hill for the Bluey Holmes Shield is sponsored by Bendigo Bank. This game is vital for our finals hopes as a win will get us fifth spot going into the Bye and on our form over the last few weeks it is quite possible. Last week saw our Reserves break their duck. It is amazing what a difference getting some experienced players back into the team makes with them leading from the first bounce. Justin Norton kept the crowd entertained with four goals and his celebrations. The Seniors also continued their winning streak and although challenged several times by Somerville were able to maintain a winning break throughout the game. The U19s seem to have lost their mojo and need to recapture their earlier form. AFL South East have just released their recommendations from the Review into the Senior Football Competition and the clubs have four weeks to make submissions. If you want to view the document there is a link on the club website and the club Board would appreciate any feedback or suggestions prior to our submission. Thanks to Laneway Espresso for putting on a Greek night for the club and from all reports it was an outstanding success. As always the club is looking for more volunteers for various areas around the club including on the Board. So if you feel you have something to contribute speak to our Secretary. Lastly make sure your putting your money away for a Major Raffle ticket which will be on sale shortly.

Today we take on neighbours Dromana not only for the “Bluey Holmes Shield”, but also for a place in the five tonight. The Tiger’s form over the last month has been very impressive so the task is formidable because ours has been up and down and all about. Let’s give Blackers our best shot and not leave it on the track. The twos were super impressive in just going down to the unbeaten Sharks, and the unders did what they do best -come from behind and take the points. They are causing a few grey hairs amongst their parents. Nice little ceremony last week in the rooms of a cheque handed to the Bays Hospital from the proceeds of the “Ladies Lunch”. Last year we supported the Breast Cancer Appeal and this year a Cap to help in the Chemotherapy process. Thanks Ladies. Talking of the women folk the Netballers had a clean sweep last week with the U17s winning an exciting game by a solitary goal. My spies tell me the girls football team had a much improved game and each week their skills get better and better. MEGA MONEY Day June 17th get your tickets from Harry for a special day with great prizes. PAST Players Day July 1st with the release of Volume 1 of our History 1929-1950 1pm start. Peninsula Preview SEAGULLS LOOK FOR BEST FORM by Simon McEvoy CHELSEA’S resurgence has hit a couple of speedbumps in recent weeks but the Seagulls get the chance to put their season back on track against BONBEACH today. This stand-alone Queen’s Birthday weekend clash is a good opportunity for the Seagulls and the Sharks to show their wares. Chelsea strung together three wins before a 69-point hiding from Pines and a 56-point loss to Frankston YCW. One bad quarter cost the Gulls last week, but that’s all it takes against sides like YC. Bonbeach deserves to be rated among the best sides in the competition. The Sharks are on a three-winning streak and have knocked over last season’s grand finalists Frankston YCW and Mt Eliza in the past month. That’s sensational form. Jackson Sole played his best game for the season last week, while Jackson Casey, Darcy James and Gary Carpenter have been super. Sandringham-listed Beau Bailey has played two games with the Sharks this season and been in the best on both occasions. Win this and Bonbeach will be 7-2 and on target for a topthree spot. IN THE RESERVES… CHELSEA will be out to snap a three-game losing streak when it hosts BONBEACH. Since beating Karingal a month ago, the Seagulls have struggled but they know their best form can worry Bonbeach. Chelsea beat Bonny by 26 points six weeks ago. The Sharks (3-5) will see this as an opportunity to edge closer to the top five. Their form is handy, pushing ladder leaders Mt Eliza last week and beating Mornington before that. IN THE UNDER 19s… CHELSEA (3-5) meets BONBEACH (6-2) in an interesting clash. Only two points separated the sides when they met in Round 3; the Seagulls nabbing the Sharks late after a seesawing battle. Kalvin Long and Sam Heurtau were at the heart of Chelsea’s win that day and will play key roles today.

Club Notes

The story this week is no doubt the great away victory for the senior boys. The belief is building and every player is playing their role. Judging our best is becoming a harder task and this evenness is certainly a key to our 6-2 win loss. The lid is on and the hard work continues. The reserves nearly caused a huge upset against Mount Eliza and will take a lot away from what was a great contest. The belief is there and Bully’s boys now set themselves the challenge of a finals charge. No Queens Birthday rest for the boys this week as we head to Chelsea for the local Derby. Good luck to All teams. June-July is jamb packed with great Bonbeach Events! Saturday 17th June - Community match dayLuncheon tickets $50 contact Sue. in 1887. Who in the world of common sense is going to believe they actually moved, yet alone ran, all the way back then? Don’t Blink Twice…Or Else You Might Just Miss It… Occasionally...or just every so often what we call a miracle occurs. And guess what? Saw one last week… Was having a bit of a wander around training the other night and out the corner of the eye something strange occurred. Not satisfied with the glimpse a full blown stop and head turn was required. There’s a lot of mythical creatures that society claims to have seen over the stretch of time. Unicorns…Yeti…Loch Ness Monster…An inviting Mother-In-Law. But never, no not once in ancient or modern history had there ever been a sighting quit like this… On the SUA track, smack bang in the middle of Kananook Oval was a goal umpire. But not just any goal umpire. It was a goal umpire engaged in training. But there’s more…he wasn’t just stretching his index finger…or performing bicep curls under the weight of a hotdog or two. He was actually running. Exerting physical energy. Sprinting down the guts of the ground quicker than some of those so called freak-fitness field umpires.

Still puzzled about the whole situation? Think this is just one of those folklore porkies that grows in dramatics around the warmth of a campfire while downing a soothing liquid and toasting marshmallows? Well it still might be… Mythical creatures aren’t real…Miracles don’t actually happen…Or do they? Note to all hotdog companies: If keen to boost sales to increase the bottom line for corporate management get down to the goal square of Kananook Oval on a Wednesday Night. But it doesn’t stop there either. He had mates…goal umpiring mates…a truck load of them. Enough to absolutely shatter any kind of sales record of a large hotdog company. And every single one of them sprinting the line (think that’s what it’s called), darting in and around agility poles to show off their discreet food platter snatching techniques and squats and lunges to ensure core strength to keep the lowest point of gravity for those ever so frequent (and hilarious) slips in the muddy goal squares. That all doesn’t even include the extensive skill drill regime to guarantee some seriously damn good looks while straddling that goal line and invading the tall slender goal post’s personal space. Allegedly it’s been going on all year. That’s what the jungle drums say. Ask any goal umpire though and they reckon they’ve been genuinely training since the turn of time. Netball Preview

Bendigo Community Bank Nepean & Peninsula FNL Netball Preview – QBW Round 2017

Sunday:

Saturday:

A Grade: Red Hill have won their last two and are building some big momentum. Dromana are coming off a couple of tough games (Crib Point and Somerville) and will be determined to get another win on the board. Red Hill will get the tip. B Grade: Red Hill had a convincing win last week while Dromana where on the end of loss. Should be an interesting game, Red Hill have won their last two while the tigers have lost their last two. Going on form Red Hill get the win. C Grade: Dromana haven’t won a game since round 4 and will be hungry for victory. Red Hill on the other hand have had an up and down year but do come off a 44 goal win last week. Dromana to cause an upset. D Grade: Big game as it is 5th v 6th, and you would think that the winner certainly keeps in the race for finals. Both sides are coming off defeats in their last game. A draw for this game is the tip. U17 Grade: It’s been 3 weeks since Dromana have played netball while Red Hill is fresh off their 1 point win over Sorrento last week. It’s 4th v 5th and will be a cracking game of netball.

Rye V Sorrento (Nepean FNL) A Grade: It’s been over a month since Rye last tasted success. In fact, the last win the Demons had was over Sorrento. This game proves to be a big opportunity for the Sharks, to see how much they have improved. Rye to win but by how much is unsure. B Grade: Both side are coming off some big losses last week. And last time these two met it was a draw. Should be an exciting game! Sorrento to win. C Grade: Like A Grade the last time Rye won a game it was against Sorrento in round 3. It’s one of only two wins for the Dees but Sorrento haven’t tasted victory yet in 2017. Is this their week to do so? U17 Grade: These two sides sit on the opposite ends of the ladder, Rye haven’t won a game yet, while Sorrento have won 3. Rye will be out to make amends for round four, but Sorrento will get the better of the Dees.

Rye Demons

Rye started off the day well last week against Crib Point. D grade had a very exciting, close game with scores almost level throughout the game. Rye had a great third quarter, leading by 7 going into the 4th quarter. Crib Point gave it their all in the last and came back to level scores with only 20 seconds to go. A great pass from Katelyn to Tamara in goals right before the siren gave us the win! Score: 32-31. Crib Point proved to be very strong in all the other grades, pushing the girls to the limit. All teams tried their best, but couldn’t compete with the strength and skill of the Crib point girls. It was a credit to the girls that they remained positive, keeping their heads held high and trying to the end. The Best on courts were D Grade Katelyn Hearn, C Grade Melinda Devine, B Grade Shall Clarke, A Grade Sienna Wills. Today we have a big day against Sorrento at home for the Queen’s Birthday clash. Let’s all keep up our great teamwork and come off with the wins today. Good luck girls. Go Dees

Dromana Tigers

Another tough weekend for the Tiger girls taking on some very strong competition in Somerville. While we didn’t come away with the wins, the squad is most certainly showing improvement which we expect to see translate into some wins in the next few weeks. D Grade – It was a disappointing game for D going down by three goals after leading for most of the game. The girls won the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarter with only our 3rd really letting us down. On a positive, the ball movement was really strong, particularly in the first half. Best were Jo Moot and Hayley Joyce. C Grade – It was a slow start for C grade, struggling with intensity in the first quarter. We had a much stronger second quarter but struggled to keep up the scoring consistency as the game continued. Defensive pressure was a highlight a something we will continue to work on. Best were Brodie Bond and Belinda Ingram B Grade – Despite the score, it was a really good contest in B grade. Taking on last years’ premiers, the girls kept a high level of intensity and defensive pressure. The improvement in this team is substantial and they are definitely a team top watch for second half of the season. Best were Hayley Pollard, Mackenzie Cochrane and Maggie Alford. A Grade – A very slow start and inability to get the goals on the board, saw us on the back foot straight away. A great second quarter effort put us back in the game, however we struggled to keep this momentum going into the second half. Ball movement out of defence was the strongest it has been, with best being Laura Hopkins and Caitlin Heseltine. We look forward to all 5 grades playing against Red Hill this weekend and will hope to get some wins on the board!

24

Red Hill Hills

What an exciting and hard fought game our under 17s had on Saturday. A great team effort which resulted in a 1 goal win. Keep it up girls, we are proud of you all. The C grade girls had a great game with Annie and Zoe strong in the goal ring. It was a great to see Liv step up and play a strong half in GS. Abbie played well in WA and fed beautifully into the goalers. Jessie had a great game in C and created many turnovers. It was pleasing to see Chloe step up and play circle defence and did a great job. We were strong throughout the whole game and everyone played there role and came away with a terrific win! B Grade continued on from last week playing good consistent netball, again we had lots of positional changes allowing us to try out more combinations. Abbie and Chloe had a run up and played very well, Meg and Karina are getting there mojo on working together well. A Grade played a nice game of skillful clean netball against a young but developing Sorrento. Bella was fed the ball very well through the mid court and goaled exceptionally well. Again we were able to try a few different combinations through the centre which was good to do.

Sorrento Sharks Special thanks to Hotel Sorrento Spa our amazing sponsor of the week. A very tight game against Red Hill this week for the U17’s. The first quarter Red Hill got out to a flying start due to us being slightly off the mark after having 3 weeks off. We slowly clawed our way back into the game and it was a draw at three quarter time! Congratulations to the Red Hill side who had a greater will to win. Grace and Josie both gunned it in the mid court but unfortunately in the last minute red hill got the better of us and we lost by 1 point. Looking forward to having a couple of games in the next few weeks! C grade had a tough game against Red Hill but Everyone put in a huge effort and played a really good first half. The girls never dropped their head but unfortunately Red Hill were much quicker and very accurate in the goals. The B girls played an awesome game this week. The score didn’t reflect the game, our defence played amazing with Jen holding Red hills goal shooter to only two goals in the later quarter, Jen and Macy worked really well together as a team. Our first quarter was amazing with Sarah and Emma leading the goal scoring. The A graders had a tough week however played an incredible game of netball, well done to Grace in defence who played her best against a great goaler who couldn’t miss a shot, and a great effort to Beth in the centre court who’s passes into the goal ring were amazing.

Netball Notes

Chelsea Seagulls Last week was a hard fought game by the D grade girls today. After a slow start in the first quarter the girls came back to be down by 5 at half time. Unfortunately the Frankston girs were too good and came away with the win. The game has given us a bit to work on at training and we will be back ready to go after the bye. The C grade girls got off to a tough start against the strong YCW side. Hannah showed a fighting spirit, returning to the court after an injury within the first few minutes of the game! Char stepped up and showed true leadership on the court, playing out of position and absolutely nailing it! The girls pushed back but weren’t able to get there this time! A tough day on the court for the B grade girls. Coming off the high from a good win against Pines last week the girls felt confident facing the reigning premiers. Defence worked hard against the in-form goalers from YCW. Kattie earnt herself a best on performance showing her “never give up” attitude for four quarters. This week we look forward to celebrating our women playing sport and working hard behind the scenes - at Chelsea Ladies Day, while we watch our footballers fight it out against Bonbeach. Good luck guys!
