"Beyond Hope: The Art of Battling Cancer" - A Night of Triumph, Awareness, and Pioneering Research
Honoring the Warriors Among Us
The 2023 edition of “Beyond Hope: The Art of Battling Cancer,” orchestrated by the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter, marked the second successful year of this unique event, dedicated to honoring the resilience and courage of cancer survivors This gathering wasn't just a ceremonial affair; it was a poignant reflection on the myriad challenges faced by cancer patients and a celebration of their indomitable spirit in the relentless fight against the disease
A Tribute to Courage and Resilience
Echoing the success of the previous year, five valiant honorees were chosen to share their narratives with the world. In an empowering collaboration, the brothers partnered with The Community Salon, a Maryland-based nonprofit organization committed to offering personal care and wellness to those in need. This collaboration provided the honorees with transformative face and hair makeovers. Through pre-recorded videos, these individuals narrated their daunting journeys, intertwining tales of struggle with triumph, all aimed at raising awareness about the pervasive impact of cancer.
Supporting Groundbreaking Cancer Research
This event transcended the realms of celebration and awareness; it was also a pivotal platform supporting the innovative work of the Ora-Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation. Founded by the visionary Dr. Hadiyah Green, a multi-disciplinary physicist specializing in targeted cancer therapeutics, the foundation focuses on using laser-activated nanoparticles and immunotherapies for treating malignant tumors. This partnership and the concerted efforts of the event's participants successfully raised over $4,000, directly bolstering Dr. Green's pioneering research. These funds are crucial in advancing Dr. Green's groundbreaking work, propelling her closer to initiating human trials for her research.

The Visionaries Behind "Beyond Hope"
The inception of the Beyond Hope event in 2022 is credited to Dr. Kenneth J. Taylor, the 24th Polemarch of the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and the diligent chairmanship of DeJoiry McKenzie-Simmons, a Spring 2022 initiate of the chapter Under their guidance, the event has flourished, embodying a commitment to supporting cancer research and honoring those who battle this affliction. Dr. Taylor's words resonate deeply: “When you sit with warriors, the conversation is different There is so much more to learn ”. This sentiment fuels the chapter's ongoing dedication to supporting Dr. Green's work and other cancer-fighting initiatives, paying homage to the warriors whose stories inspire and touch many lives.
