3 Afford Love Rewards! Afford’s much anticipated annual Trivia Night was held at “The Village” in Penrith and it was a resounding success! The venue was packed to the roof, we were so pleased with the wonderful turnout! It was a sell-out event with round 100 attendees that included staff from different sites and Afford’s head office, as well as local business representatives, friends and family of staff members. The Trivia Night is heralded as one of Afford’s most popular events that gathers everyone together to socialise and to take part in some friendly competition. The night instantly started buzzing with energy as everyone arrived in groups with colleagues, friends and family. The event opened with Rhiannon O’Brien welcoming attendees. Throughout the evening, attendees could take part in a raffle and silent auctions, as well as testing their memories with the range of curly trivia questions. Along with the games and raffles, all were treated to a delicious two course meal. It was a great opportunity for Afford staff and their families to mingle, share dinner, play trivia and have a few laughs together. Many amazing prizes were won on the night with Friends of Megan’s Table winning first prize which was a collection of assorted wines and a $100 gift voucher. The Trivia Night is a fundraising event for Afford and all funds raised go directly back to supporting people living with disability. This year, the event raised $12,667 including in-kind donations which will go towards continuing to make our Afford programs amazing. We’d like to thank the local businesses that supported our event including Creepy Crawly Pest Control, Mooney Real Estate, Kookaburra Plumbing and JT Plumbing. Your help and support goes a long way to making Afford’s programs a success. Thank you to all who took part in this year’s Trivia Night and those who helped to organise the event. It is a great way to get the Afford community together, while raising funds to support our clients and their needs.

afford staff spring into site makeovers We have been overwhelmed with the amazing transformations that have taken place across many of Afford’s Sydney sites - and all in just a few weeks. We have received an array of refresh photos from different sites, with Team Leaders putting in the hard yards to create a real WOW factor across their sites. It is evident that Team Leaders have enjoyed taking ownership of their sites by adding new furniture, or sprucing up existing rooms to deliver more colour and vibrancy. Team Leaders at Chipping Norton Day Program brought their front yard back to life with the inclusion of some new pots at the entrance. The entrance is now much more welcoming to visitors, clients and their families and carers and gives the entrance a fresh new look. But the team at Chipping Norton didn’t stop there... they also incorporated various upgrades to their sensory room. They now have a stimulating, new bubble machine, fresh pictures on the wall and also have a vibrant, shining sunflower. In addition, they have also incorporated contemporary love heart lights with 3D reflection. In the games room at Chipping Norton, there are plans to buy new couches for clients to chill out and relax in, and a TV and VCR for clients to play educational and entertaining video games or watch TV. Blacktown Day Program’s team have also shown great effort to refresh their site with the common room now a more cosy place for clients. Clients are now hanging out in the room to socialise, listen to music or play the play station. Another great example of a site Spring rejuvenation can be seen at Condell Park Day Program. Team Leaders have included a colourful, vibrant and eye-catching birthday chart on the wall in their common area and have already included the names and birthdays of everyone who attends the site. Wonderful effort teams! Thank you for embracing the Spring site refresh challenge and creating truly inviting environments for client and staff enjoyment.

Bowling Towards Employment

Marrickville SLES Trainees and SLES Trainer Jermyn recently attended the Marrickville Bowling Club to explore what jobs and skills are needed to work in this industry. Trainees were very excited to learn more about the Marrickville Bowling and Recreation Club and the ins and outs of operation. Upon arriving they had the opportunity to meet Tommy the owner of the Bowling Club who spoke about the history of the club, daily tasks, current employment opportunities, standards and expectations of staff and future projects for the Club. Tommy explained to the trainees the different positions and roles available within a Bowling Club and how many staff they currently employment. Trainees got the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and were given a tour of the club including an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Club Cellar! Trainees felt at ease to ask questions and explore as Tommy and his staff were very friendly and approachable. Every questions under the sun was asked and answered to feed their inquisitive minds. Trainees were very appreciative of the rare insight into the Bowling Club and upon arriving back onsite, they discussed what they enjoyed about the visit and if they could see themselves working in this particular industry one day.
