IT’S BUYER BEWARE

When it Comes to Home Design Internet Purchases

T

he purchasing world is changing and has been for many years now. The internet has taken over in the vast array of items available for consumers. But for the world of internet home design purchases…it’s buyer beware!! Design sites such as Houzz, Pinterest and others, can give you a birds-eye view of what others have achieved in their homes and then copy it right in your own home often without the assistance of a local interior design professional. However, what happens when that duplicated look falls short in your home? Most likely it is due to the many differences in your home compared to the photo. In the photo, it looks perfect because a design professional has been to that home and studied all aspects of that dwelling and its interior space. They have taken into consideration the Elements of Design including space, color, texture, balance weight and scale. They have observed the lifestyle of the occupants, the other rooms in the house, traffic flow, home style, home exterior, neighborhood and most importantly- natural light. All these items weigh into a professional interior designer’s recommendations to a client and being present in the home is a must. Do not be fooled by online interior design services who profess they can design your home from a photo or a video. It’s simply not an option for a successful outcome of a home interior and should be considered a substandard approach to a project. A design professional must visit the jobsite in order to consider all the factors relevant to the space.

Another pitfall for consumers can be purchasing upholstered furnishings without the availability of expert knowledge in textiles. A great “value” on an upholstered piece can signal the possibility of inferior fabrics which may wear poorly over time. More and more fabrics coming from overseas contain Viscose (Rayon) which is a problem fiber for upholstered furnishings. These fibers can “ring” when wet, grab stains and generally begin to look shabby over a short period of time. Other textile/fabric negatives can include pilling, stretching, fading, tearing or shredding. Selecting the correct fabric for an upholstered piece can add years of life to your home design investment and help you get the best value for the dollars spent. It is important to hire a professional interior designer to come to your home and make recommendations that fit your home and all its particulars. They are trained in all areas of design, especially textiles. Professional interior designers provide a valuable service to make sure your design dollars are spent wisely and not wasted. For some folks, there is the misconception that interior designers are expensive. This is simply not true, especially when you take into consideration how much it costs to replace furnishings that are either incorrect or inferior. Most designers charge a reasonable design fee and then make purchases for you at their cost plus a small markup of anywhere from 10% to 25%. Their recommendations can save you time and money and turn your home into one that you can now share on Houzz. ORANGECOUNTYLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

homefashion Mattress Myth #2: Replace in 8

Why Your Mattress Should Last 10 Years or More

W

hen selecting a mattress, most people put comfort at the top of their list of priorities. But did you know that if you want your bed to retain a high level of comfort for several years, buying a mattress that you can flip is your best bet? Why? A mattress crafted with comfort layers on both sides balances out the wear pattern. When flipped and spun regularly, the just-slept-on side is given a chance to flatten out, eliminating “sleep trench.” With a “no-flip” bed, you sleep on only one side of the mattress, never giving the comfort layers a chance to even out. Some companies may tell you that double-sided mattresses are no longer produced because of “new technology” that doesn’t need flipping. Yet the truth is, many companies only offer “no flip” versions because they cost less to manufacture and wear faster, ensuring you’ll be buying a mattress again in no time. However, not all two-sided mattresses are alike. The materials used to construct the bed will also affect its comfort and longevity. The biggest expense in making a mattress is in the outer-most layers, and they are also the part of the mattress that wears out the fastest. That is why the best companies use natural materials such as latex, cotton and wool, which don’t break down like toxic polyurethane foam. Natural fibers also provide excellent regulation to keep you cooler, better air circulation, and are naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial and dust mite resistant—

providing a healthier sleep for you and your family. Pair that with a double-sided mattress and you’ve got a bed that is sure to provide greater comfort, support and resilience for years to come. TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN

W

AND OPEN YOUR LIVING SPACE

hile the home you fell in love with years ago may have suited you perfectly at the time, a creative kitchen renovation will address the changes in your lifestyle and expand your living space. In Orange County, most of the houses were built between the years of 1960 and 2000. During that time, houses were built with the kitchen hidden at the back of the house and small individual dining, family and formal living rooms. With today’s kitchen being the central hub of the home, opening up the kitchen to the rest of the house facilitates interaction between all rooms. There is a wide array of innovative options available. Removing a wall, vaulting a ceiling, opening view lines

and a creative cabinet layout can all contribute to the open concept. Updating your outdated kitchen with professional grade appliances will create a gourmet kitchen. This will increase the resale value of a home, but rather than looking at the upgrades in terms of selling, look at them as an investment in your quality of life. With extensive remodeling experience, a professional contractor can assist in turning your beginning ideas into detailed designs, providing layout ideas and additional resources that make the difference between a finished project with no detail and one that will grab the attention of every visitor as they walk through your home.

What to Know BEFORE REMODELING

R

enovating your kitchen and upgrading your bathroom gives your home a fresh new look, often increasing functionality, while adding to the value of your home. However, the process of choosing a remodeling company can be tiresome and stressful. With so many options available, where do you start and whom should you call? Selecting the right company can make a huge difference in the projects’ success. You want a company that will leave you with a peace of mind throughout the entire process, not to mention an end result that you are completely happy with. Here are some things to consider before tackling that kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. Local stability: A showroom and local manufacturing plant where you can view examples of their work and get the latest trends and products that are available on the market. Experienced designers: Make sure to ask questions such as, does the company have flexibility in the products they offer, and how is the project managed throughout the remodel. Licensing: Is the company licensed with the right classification for your scope of work? How long has the company been in business? Cabinet Finish: Catalyzed conversion varnish is the most durable finish available today. Finishing should never be done in the customer’s home, or in the person’s garage, so ask to see the finishing equipment and test the durability of the finish in the manufacturer’s showroom. Removing and replacing the cabinets with newly designed and manufactured custom cabinets does have its advantages, like allowing you to redesign the layout or create new interiors with adjustable shelving. Refacing existing cabinets, which means replacing the doors and drawer fronts, replacing the hinges and the molding, and covering the existing frames, is often a viable and cost efficient option. The process could include adding new drawers, slides and pullouts in the lower cabinets, and often being able to adjust some cabinets to accommodate new appliances. A combination of Refacing and Replacing offers savings while dramatically improving the look and feel of the room. The right approach to bathroom remodeling can turn a worn-out old room into a bright, spacious retreat. Custom-made bathroom vanities, cabinet replacing or refacing, granite countertops, and new tubs, showers, toilets and sinks are just some of the ways to reinvent this area of your home. Experienced designers will listen to your needs, know what questions to ask to help clarify your thoughts, and be familiar with the latest products available. They should also be comfortable working with older products that the homeowner might want to bring into the remodel. Always remember—the designer must keep in mind that everyone is different and that kitchens satisfy various needs and uses. The designer must be versatile and innovative in

planning in order to accommodate your lifestyles and your budget. Reborn Cabinets has met all of the above criteria for more than 30 years. Regarding Going Solar

he cost of electricity in California has been going up 6% every year over the past 10 years and unfortunately, will continue to do so. Warmer months ahead mean more energy usage to keep the home cool which ultimately means higher energy bills. Many homeowners have taken advantage of going solar, but if you have contemplated the idea, you may have a few questions about why going solar is a smart choice for you and the environment. Some of the most common questions about transitioning your home to solar are: How many panels should I get? Your electric usage (your actual kWh usage from your electric bill) over the last 12 months determines the size of your system. How much will it cost? Going solar means you can harness the most abundant source of energy on Earth by essentially putting your very own utility on your own roof. If you are spending more than $80 per month on your electric bill, you can start saving immediately on your electric bills and reduce your dependence on utilities. Financing options – both leases and loans- are available as well, allowing you to spread the cost over 10-20 years with no money down.

38

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • JUNE/JULY 2017

What rebates are available? Previously, there were rebates and incentives available from the state of California and local utilities, but most of these have been used up. However, there is still a federal tax credit available, equal to 30% of the cost of your system, which can be taken as a one-time credit against your tax liability. This federal tax credit will be phased out over the next few years. For more information on how you can start saving immediately by going solar, you can contact REPOWER By Solar Universe at (949) 243-0312. Located in Irvine, they offer hands-on customer service and installation is backed by a 10 year warranty. You can visit their website at www.repowerirvine.com

YOUR WOOD

CABINETS AND FLOORS

O

ver time wood cabinets and floors look flat and lifeless due to dirt build up, wear and tear, scratches and age-discolored finishes. Cabinet and floor renewal is an innovative and affordable alternative to replacing, refacing (new doors), painting or traditional sanding/refinishing. In only a few days, your wood cabinets and floors will be restored to that like–new luster without the inconvenience, dust and odors from harsh chemicals. At a fraction of the cost, it will save you time and money. If you are looking to change the color of your cabinets, one option is to make a slight color change giving your cabinets a warmer tone of the wood without covering the wood grains. Pigments and dyes can be added to the new finish so that you can achieve virtually any color desired. Say you have maple cabinets and would like a slightly darker stained wood, the new finish can be custom dyed to your color preference and then professionally applied. You can chose to do a complete color change, which will dramatically change the style and look of your cabinets. Select from custom durable color finishes that do not chip or peel, and when applied there are no drips, streaks or bleed thru. If repairs are needed like gaps, holes, splintered wood, etc, they are made during the wood surface cleaning process. N-Hance Wood Renewal uses their proprietary, state-of-the-art non-toxic and odorless products. These products along with their advanced technology and processes were developed to provide consistent high quality results. For more information you can call, N-Hance Wood Renewal at (714) 907-1917. The Advantages of

GOING SOLAR IN CALIFORNIA

D

o you dread getting your power bill each month, especially in the warm months when you are using more electricity? Are you continually having to endure the heat during the summer months by not utilizing the a/c to try and keep your power bill lower? Have you considered going with solar power, but thought it would be too expensive to bother? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then it is time to really understand the advantages of how transitioning to a solar system will not only help you to reduce your expenses but also increase the value of your property. Many homeowners have the misconception that solar energy is expensive to obtain. The price for solar modules has lowered by more than half in the last few years. Advanced racking technology and rapidly improving installation of skills further helped to reduce costs to a level that can be paid off in just a few years. By installing a solar array, homeowners can enjoy reducing their monthly financial burden when having to pay their electric bills. Also, solar backup storage option is becoming more viable and affordable, reducing utility fees and providing energy security in case of a power outage. Solar panels have made increased advancements productively as well as aesthetically. Sunpreme is a U.S. company that designs some of the best solar panels currently available. The low profile

44

ORANGE COUNTY LIVING • JUNE/JULY 2017

design and glass on glass technology give the home a modern look while increasing performance and durability of the modules, especially in warner climates including coastal climates. The PV cells are better protected from many of the issues that traditional panels have with uncommon weather such as high heat, high humidity or high salinity. In addition, the advanced technology allows for a minimal amount of roof space used to cover the same amount of power production compared to other panels available, producing up to 30% more power output in the same space. With its high-efficiency coupled with the lowest temperature coefficient among all solar panels, each panel is capable of producing the most energy per square foot, whether on a rooftop or on the ground. With more power available, homeowners benefit from greater electricity production for a faster return on their investment, which adds to the value of their home. To learn more about how you can significantly reduce the cost of your power bill, you may contact Sol-Up USA, LLC at 949-632-0056, or email info@solup.com. In business since 2009, they will take care of the whole process from beginning to end as well as offer cleaning and maintenance packages. You can also visit their website at www.solup.com/oc.
