UN OEIL EN FRANCE : LOOK BACK AT THE FESTIVAL DE CANNES 2014

This year, the Festival de Cannes celebrated its 67th edition chaired by Jane Campion, famous New Zealand director and writer. From the 18 feature films in competition, which one won the Palme d’Or? Having twice won the Grand Jury Prize and once the Best Director prize, the Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the Palme d’Or with Winter Sleep. This film tells the story of a retired old actor in a hotel in Cappadocia, who gradually discovers how his relatives see him... Sublime photography and references to Chekhov and Bergman, music by Schubert: great classic movie, very inspired. The rest of the winners served up a few surprises : it was not expected that the Italian film by Alice Rohrwacher be rewarded , nor that the filmmaker Bennett Miller be recognised ahead of his actors (Steve Carell , Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo). Mommy, Xavier Dolan’s film won the Jury Prize in first-equal place with Farewell to Language by Jean -Luc Godard. This is a powerful symbol, since the two directors are respectively the youngest and the oldest of the Competition. Nevertheless, we can note the failure of three French films in competition (Bonello, Hazanavicius , Assayas ), slightly offset by the Camera d’Or awarded to Party girl . The closing ceremony also had its emotional highlight with the delivering of the afore-mentioned Golden Camera : since it was presented this year by Gilles Jacob in his last term as President of the Festival. His word of farewell, before taking one last bow, close a chapter in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.
