40th AEMA’s Anniversary

The Association of the Marble Sector in Andalusia, 40 years of fulfilled goals

A

EMA celebrated its 40th anniversary at the service of the companies of the Marble Region on February 21. Since its birth in 1977, AEMA has been characterized by its constant evolution. It has gone from being a provincial association, ‘Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Almería – APEM (Provincial Businessmen Association of Almería) to a regional one. It has improved the internal organization and the qualification and training, both of employees and executives. In addition, it has consolidated the European markets and has managed to open up new markets, such as the American, Asian and African.

AEMA, formed by marble sector’s companies, has worked during four decades, representing and defending their interests, contributing to generate

wealth, employment and, above all, striving to position the Macael Marble as the Natural Stone market leader.

Through innovation, internationalization and companies’ knowhow, this industry has been able to resurface and reinvent itself, marking the way to recover the lost ground after the crisis. Not only have there been great advances in the material’s exploitation, but also in its commercialization and transformation.

The Marble Sector continues ‘climbing’ steps and maintaining an upward trend. The data support this: sales currently approach 1 billion, exports have increased 35.6% over the previous year, and from 2013 to 2016, 846 jobs have been created. (See graphics).

NEW CORPORATE IMAGE And on the scene of this constant evolution, the Association of the Marble Sector, on the occasion of its 40 years, launches a new image. There has been a simplified redesign of the old logo, where the letter 'e' of

entrepreneurs, remains being the protagonist of the whole. During 2017, the logo will include the numerical mention of the

40th anniversary, which will disappear in January 2018. It will be when AEMA, in its 41st year, inaugurates its new corporate image. el mĂĄrmol #31

T

he year of 1983 was especially important for AEMA, its companies and the Marble industry in general. Under the mandate of Francisco Martínez-Cosentino, an ambitious Strategic Plan is implemented in collaboration with ‘Instituto de Promoción Industrial de Andalucía’ -I.P.I.A.-, (Institute of Andalusian Industrial Promotion), currently known as ‘Instituto de Fomento de Andalucía’ -I.F.A.-, (Andalusian Institute of Development), Public Administrations and Labor unions centers.

The 'Global Action Plan for the Marble Region', supported by who was the Director of the IPIA, Ricardo Sánchez de la Morena, successfully faced the total reconversion of the Region, socially and economically. Social dining areas were built in the mountains where the marble quarries are located, the recognition of the right to early retirement of stoneman was obtained, the factories machinery and facilities with the latest technology were upgraded, the most important vials of the mountains

were asphalted and improved, the electric and telephone services were enhanced. In addition, the Marble School of Macael was created, studies were made of Marble reserves in the Macael mountains, promotion campaigns were made, and many other necessary actions that contributed to the sector’s takeoff. Two years later, AEMA materialized its promotional work with the creation, in 1985, of the Marble region awards, currently known as 'Macael Awards'.

In 1990, AEMA began to take the first steps in internationalization, participating, with own stand at the International Fair of Carrara (Italy) within the Spanish Pavilion of the ICEX and, also, carrying out a Trade Mission in US. In 1997, the 'Strategic Plan of the Productive System of Macael' was presented, with a spectacular result that far surpassed the most optimistic forecasts. The sector growth was calculated by the Plan evaluating technicians, in the period 1996-2000, , in a 31.9 el mármol #31

The Marble Region goes to become, in this moment, in transforming industry of all the materials. In 2002, this Business Association received the Andalusia Medal, granted to AEMA in recognition of the struggle for economic and social development of the area, in its 25 years of existence. In this year, another historical event occurs: the visit of His Royal Highness Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias and Crown Heir of Spain, honoring with his presence in the Association offices, and also visiting factories and quarries. In 2006, the ‘Fundación Marca Macael’ (Macael Brand Foundation) was established, whose purpose is

Furthermore, it developed the Restoration of the Honor Courtyard of Castle of Vélez Blanco, it participated in the modification of the requirements of the guarantees of restoration of the quarries and presented the ‘III Plan Estratégico Comarca del Mármol 2016 (III Strategic Plan Marble Sector). As a future goals, AEMA will keep working on internationalization, innovation, distribution channels, brand creation, both in a grouped form ‘Macael Marble Brand’, and at the company level, to continue bringing the Macael Marble worldwide.

In addition, the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, Pedro Morenés, who wanted to support this initiative in one of the first public events attended by his new position, closed the event.

But, undoubtedly, another one of the great protagonists of the night was the Patio of Honor from the Castle of Vélez Blanco, work of singular beauty and artistic quality, realized in White Marble of Macael, and that is currently exhibited in the MET. The Patio of Honor was the best scenario to convey to the guests all the qualities of this noble material, as it related during his presentation, the expert, with Spanish background, Ines Powell. Powell, an official speaker of the MET for more than 30 years and specialist in Spanish art, explored all the history linked to this reference work of the Renaissance in Spain.

In his speech, Antonio Sánchez, President of AEMA, insisted that "the main message we want to convey is our highest respect and recognition of the legacy of many small and family businesses that have a priceless experience, a know-how inherited from generations that allows us to participate in prestigious projects all over the world. To this solid base, the differential of the firms of our region, we add innovation, continuous improvement and the application of the latest technologies. The result is a very high competitiveness in our industry that, I am convinced, will guarantee success in the challenges and projects that remain to be done”.

As Antonio Sánchez, AEMA’s President, points out, "The United States is a key market for us. It accounts for almost 40% of total sales and is therefore not the first time we have developed our commercial and promotional activity here. But certainly, this occasion has been special. To be able to transfer the relevance of the Macael Brand to the main prescribers of the architecture and the design of New York in the framework of the MET, and taking as a scenario the Patio from the Castle of Vélez Blanco has been a sample of the enormous potential not only of the sector itself but also of the Brand. We are convinced that this event will be a turning point in both the United States and internationally”.

The Macael Brand initiative is supported by the "Macael Brand Foundation", a platform promoted by the Association of the Marble Industry in Andalusia (AEMA). The objective of this platform is to act as a promotion and marketing tool for the sector, giving international recognition of the attributes, values and benefits of the Macael Marble, and to make it recognized as a brand. Behind all of this are the know-how, entrepreneurship and innovative capacity of many businessmen and workers in this region of Almeria, who are able to constantly adapt and carry out

From being an extractor center, Macael has become a transforming center of the Natural Stone, internationally recognized. As Antonio Sánchez, President of AEMA, says, "we are in a situation of slight but firm recovery, where as the

latest data on growth in sales, exports and employment generation reflect, we have recovered the lost ground during the crisis. And this is being achieved thanks to the internationalization, innovation and knowhow, precisely the values that the Macael Brand intends to reflect. The challenge for the future is to lay the foundations and consolidate this current rate of growth, and it is essential to insist on promotional events such as those that are taking place in New York these days". el mármol #31

Its objective in all these years has been to position the Macael Marble Region as a world model of the natural stone.
