Case Studies

Dominance In the USL, the Sounders began to assert their dominance by winning a championship in 1995, 1996, 2005, and 2007. During this span of championships, the Sounders also won the Commissioner’s Cup 3 times, the Pacific Division Championship 3 times, the Western Conference Championship in 2004, and the Cascadia Cup in back-to-back years. The Cascadia Cup was a competition between three bitter rivals in the Pacific Northwest that awarded a trophy to the team who finishes with the best record in the season series. This tradition carried over into the MLS when the Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps moved into the league in 2007, 2009, and 2011 respectively.
