MARCH 2011

President’s Message Dear Members Much has happened since my last message. Many more disasters occurred after the Queensland floods. We had cyclones and of course our own devastating bushfires around our hills. Many have lost everything in these disasters and our thoughts and prayers are with them all. Thank you to all the members and guests who kindly supported our raffle at Genevieve De Souza our recent Sunday lunch on 13 February. The profit of $150.00 will go towards our Australian disaster appeal. Thank you too to everyone who donated to this appeal at our 22nd Anniversary dance on 19 February. Your generosity is appreciated. Our Sunday February lunch was such a fun day. I wish to thank all our talented singers and musicians for making the start of the Association’s activity year one to remember. To all our hardworking and committed cooks and helpers, you are all legends and together with all our members, I thank you all so much for providing us month after month with quality mouth-watering dishes. Our lunches would cease to exist without your generosity of time and resources. I am sure there are many excellent cooks amongst our members. Please consider cooking for our lunches. It would relieve some of our regular cooks. You can contact Daisy Westerhout our catering co-ordinator if you are able to assist. Thank you.

22nd Anniversary Dance On behalf of all those that attended our 22nd Anniversary Dinner & Dance on Saturday 19th February I would like to extend my sincere thanks to those who organised the event for a great evening. The band, our old favourites "Take 3" were in great form and kept us superbly entertained the whole evening. I find it just amazing how only three people can create the sounds they do. I am not too sure I liked the outcome of the new table selection method (I liked the method itself). But one is constantly reminded in these circumstances that someone has to be last and of course the very well known saying from Matthew 20:16 "So the last shall be first, and the first last: ....". You guessed as much - my table (No. 5) was last! But wait there's more... Lest you forget the second part of Matthew 20:16 - Those in attendance might have missed the link. Two door prizes were won by the last table to partake of dinner. And we didn't muck around, we scored door prize #1 and one other. In fact my good wife Ann collected prize # 1 for us as I was busy talking to our resident professional photographer at the time. In attendance were several past presidents of our club/association, Tony Hendricks, Geoff Barker, Keith Westerhout, Brian Leicester and Ernie Lopez, and this made the evening even more memorable. (See photo on page 4) It was also obvious that many guests were not members. Nothing wrong with that but for those members who didn't attend can I encourage you to try harder next time. You missed a great night out.

Best regards, Alan Jupp

PAPIAH KRISTANG—SPEAK KRISTANG Malacca’s 500th Anniversary To mark the 500th Anniversary of the Portuguese landing in Malacca – August 1511 – a short history of this event will be featured in our newsletters leading up to August when we will celebrate this momentous event in the history of some of the Eurasians who originated in Malacca. We will continue featuring the Kristang language in September.

THE PORTUGUES CONQUEST OF MALACCA The first attack Ruy D’Aaujo had informed d’Albuquerqe that “the occupation of the bridge” might decide victory or a least deal a heavy blow at the enemy. The bridge was obviously the key to the situation, for its capture would cut the Sultan’s army in two, and so make its final defeat easier. D’Albuquerque decided, therefore, to capture it by a pincer movement, and divided his meagre forces into halves. The first, led by himself, was to make a landing in Upeh and capture the northern end of the bridge; the second was to land near the royal palace and the mosque, and capture its southern end. He chose 25 July for the attack as that was the feast of St James, to whom he had a special devotion. Accordingly, two hours before dawn on that day, captains and men assembled on board the large and roomy flagship, Flor de la Mar, and as dawn was breaking, their little boats full of troops crept towards the beaches. Their approach was soon observed, and a furious artillery fire greeted them. When this was finished the boats drew nearer inshore, made a landing and soon engaged in a fierce battle with the defenders. The Malays put up a brave resistance, but after some hours of continuous fighting the Portuguese succeeded in capturing both ends of the bridge. As the wind freshened from the sea, they set fire to houses on both banks of the river, so that in a short while a great part of the city itself was in flames and the royal palace and many of the royal houses had been gutted. During the fire a chariot lined with silk and inlaid with gold, on thirty wheels each as high as a room, was burnt. It had been intended for the wedding of Sultan Mahmud’s daughter with the Sultan of Pahang. Continued next month........... An interesting note - D’Albuquerque and D’Araujo (the spelling changed to D’Aranjo) are surnames of some Eurasian families and most probably descendants of Ruy D’Araujo and Captain D’Albuquerque!
