Heather Fitzgerald and Alan and Ann Jupp (Heather and Alan pictured) were made Life Members of AEAWA. An honour very gratefully accepted.

This week we remember the birth of the ANZAC spirit on the beaches of Gallipoli. Thinking of all members and friends who have served their country in time of conflict, and those who lost their lives. Lest we forget.

GOODBYE YOUTH PORTFOLIO— Hello everyone… At the AGM I announced vacating the Youth Coordinators portfolio. We have come to the realisation that the number of youth within our Eurasian community, but more importantly, those who are prepared or able to participate in our youth events are truly minimal. Yet, we continue to believe that there is still a vital need for our younger members to get involved with our community through participation in our organised events at the Association. I have therefore accepted a new position as ―Special Events‖ Coordinator. In this role I will be organising a series of sporting, musical and social events for participation not only by the youth but jointly with family and friends. I will be preparing a schedule of events planned from May 2010 to March 2011 and hope you would diarise these activities and encourage the younger members in advance. On a final note, I will be forming a sub committee and would be happy for some of our members (especially younger members) to come aboard. If you are interested please contact me by the May lunch on the 2nd May. I hope to have our first committee meeting shortly after in order to plan the schedule of events and our first organised event in June. Special Events Coordinator Chad Beins

- HELLO SPECIAL EVENTS ! Our next lunch on 2nd May is our special Mother’s Day lunch. We are also doing a musical tribute to a visiting former popular 1960’s Singapore band member. REPORT ON AGM 2010 The 2010 AGM was held on 11 April 2010 at Redcliffe Hall. At the start 80 financial members were present; by the end of the meeting 100 were there, thus making sure they all got a free lunch! Proceedings got under way at 10.10 am and went along very smoothly – in fact, I had less notes for the minutes of this AGM than I have ever had previously. All portfolio members of the Management Committee presented their reports (Vice President John Sutton‘s report being read by his sister-in- aw Marian Mitchell) and it is expected that they will be included along with the 2011 AGM papers for members to read. Outgoing President Heather Fitzgerald made a heartfelt farewell speech, amid calls for her to stay on as President, but Heather made it very clear that the time had come for her to hand over the reins. It was a matter of thanks all around from Heather for a job well done in 2009-2010. Heather made a special point of thanking Sue James who although not a portfolio holder contributed in so many ways to the ongoing success of AEAWA. Specific mention was made also of the unstinting efforts of Philip de Mello and his team of helpers with the drinks ‗portfolio‘. Treasurer Gary Fernandez‘ report disclosed a healthier financial position than in the previous year. Youth Co-ordinator Chad Beins indicated he would like to hand over the reins of that particular portfolio to concentrate on Special Events. Heritage portfolio member Gerry Carroll announced the winner of the Ida da Silva award as Jermaine Beins of the well known musical family – this year the value of the award was $400 – but regretfully no applications were received for the Andrew Clarke Memorial Sports Award. The inaugural Ivan Richards Award for Community Service was won by a very deserving Daisy Westerhout. An amendment was made to the Constitution in that the requirement for one of Ida da Silva‘s family to be a member of the Selection Sub Committee for the Ida da Silva award was removed. Two members were nominated for life membership - Heather Fitzgerald and Alan Jupp – both were accepted. We now have a full quota (five) of Life Members. One nomination was received for President – Genevieve de Souza, who was declared elected. Genevieve said although she had been a member for only two and a half years, AEAWA was very dear to her heart; she thought the Management Committee was very professional, and she thanked all the past Presidents for what they had done for AEAWA over the past 21 years; she expressed the hope they would all continue to support the Association. All other Management Committee members were re-elected. The AGM finished earlier (11.30am) than recent AGM‘s – all present adjourned for a nice lunch and other bits and pieces organised by Daisy Westerhout. Frank Hedges Secretary
