VOL 22 ISSUE 2 Special points of interest:

President’s Message Hello members and friends

I hope this Newsletter finds you happy and AGM NOTICE in the best of health. For those who attended our February Sun- EURASIANLYMPICS day Lunch, you will know that it turned out ANNIVERSARY to be a bit of a non-event!! My sincere apologies to those who were inconvenienced by the fact that the Shire Hall at Redcliffe was double booked on the day. Our ever helpful volunteers arrived to set up the hall only to find a church group already in full swing, complete with band and conHeather Fitzgerald gregation!! I spoke to the organisers who assured me that they had a firm booking, as did we! All we could do was make the best of a bad situation. So as not to waste all the yummy food that had already been prepared, we sold the food and cakes as take away meals and were able to make use of a small room to at least serve drinks to our members.

21st Anniversary Dinner Dance The evening was well attended by some 160 members and friends. Dressed in colourful attire to suit the Tropical Island party theme and serenaded to the wispy tunes belted out by Time Trax, the crowd were treated to hits from the Beatles to Cha Cha’s and Rock and Roll. DJ Alan Jupp was his usual self and handled the crowd immaculately guiding the evening’s proceedings. Outgoing President Heather gave her swan song speech and thanked all those who have supported, and continue to support the Association with special mention to the organising Committee. A sumptuous dinner was provided by Red Hen Catering and diners were not left wanting. Door prizes included two $100 vouchers for use at the Burswood Resort, and a bottle of Scotch. The evening came to an end just before midnight and brought to a close another eventful year for the Association. Gary Fernandez

THE EURASIAN AEAWA ANNUAL AWARDS The Ida Da Silva Award for The Arts Ida Da Silva was a founding member of AEAWA and devoted much of her time to continuing the traditions of Portuguese dancing and singing. Ida‟s work is commemorated by this award made to a young member for achievement in any of the artistic fields.

The Andrew Clarke Award for Sport Andrew Clarke was famous for his sporting achievements especially on the Hockey field, and for his encouragement of young people in sport. Andrew is remembered each year by this award for sporting achievement.

The Ivan Richards Award for Community Service We sadly lost Ivan last year, our oldest member at the time. We are pleased to remember his long record of service to the Community by this inaugural award. Unlike the other awards which are applied for, members can nominate another member based on their service to the community. Some Overdue Thank You‟s.... Due to a publishing error in the February Newsletter, part of Thelma Green‟s “Thank You” list was left out of her message following the Children‟s Christmas Party. So here goes... Thanks also to Chad Beins and Chad Junior for the lively Christmas music. Jessie de Mello, Vanessa de Mello and Alison Thomason for the very impressive face painting. Alan Jupp for being a hit with serving the ice cream. It has been a pleasure organizing the Children‟s Christmas Treat 2009. Thelma Green Children‟s Coordinator

YOUTH INTERESTS—EURASIANLYMPICS! G‟day everyone— Psssst!…..pass the word around….Sunday 14th March immediately after our monthly Sunday lunch, we will be commencing our—

First AEAWA Family & Friends Games Day - Eurasianlympics! A detailed list of what, how, where etc, etc….follows on pages 10 and 11 of the Newsletter. If you have any questions or queries please call either myself or any of the committee members. But in a nutshell, this is what its all about….. The event is a competitive series of 5 games - badminton, soccer, rounders, chapteh and table tennis Members will form groups of 5 people and must comprise a fair mixture of men, women, youth and children Each team (and each member of the team) will participate in every game in order to score team points These points will be recorded and tallied and a „Champion Team‟ will be announced Rules and regulations apply – please comply with coordinators instructions Lets enjoy our last burst of summer!!! Form a team with family members or friends, bring your shorts and sport shoes, sun cream, sunnies and hat and come and enjoy a great day out! Remember, this is an organised Youth event so please encourage your children and grandchildren to join in. This is also an AEAWA sponsored event and therefore caters primarily to our members and their families however a good friend or two is always welcomed into our community. I have deliberately chosen games we played as children, growing up in our ‘kampongs’. The aim of the event is obviously to have fun with our family and friends and hopefully attract the attention of our youth. I really hope you will make a big…big…effort to support this event by participating….its all in the name of FUN!!!! Cannot wait to see you all there and I’m looking forward to a great time! Cheers all Chad Beins Youth Coordinator 0402 113 897
