GREECE: Culture & History Program Description

In the 5th century BC, Greece was a hub of development and went on to become an undisputed leader in the areas of art, architecture, science, mathematics, philosophy, drama, literature and democracy. Today, participants of a study abroad program in Greece can gain valuable insights into this country’s rich history and learn more about how it has influenced almost every part of Western civilization and the basis that Greek culture has provided for our modern Western way of life.

Program Includes:

• Academic and professional excursions with special presentations • Cultural excursions and field trips with local bilingual guides • Entrance fees and reservations as described • Accommodation in 3star hotels (twin rooms for students, single rooms for faculty) • Welcome and farewell dinner in Athens • Daily breakfast • Private coach bus and ferry tickets as noted, public transport pass in Athens • On-site coordinator during excursions • Orientation sessions and city maps

• Day 1: Flight to Athens • Day 2: Guided bus tour of Athens • see the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parliament, Olympic Stadium, University and National Library, Theatre of Dionysus, etc. • Welcome dinner at a restaurant in Athens • Day 3: Guided walking tour of Athens • Visit historical city center to see the ancient Agora, Stoa of Attalos, flea market at Monastiraki and other sites • Guided tour of the Acropolis including Propylea, Temple of Apteros Nike, the Parthenon and Erechteion • Day 4: Piraeus - Athens • Guided tour of Piraeus and its port, now the largest port in Europe and third largest in the world • Guided tour of the National Archaeological Museum • Day 5: Mycenae - Nafplion - Epidaurus • Stop-over at the Canal of Corinth • Guided tour of Mycenae, home of legendary King Agamemnon; visit the Lion Gate, Royal Tombs and the Cyclopean Walls • Lunch in Nafplion, a picturesque town and first capital of modern Greece • Guided tour of Epidaurus and its world famous theater from the 4th century BC • Day 6: Marathon - Thermopylae - Aidipsos - Chalkis - Heraklion • Guided tour of the Tomb of Marathon and the Thermopylae • Drive to Aidipsos for free time, with a stop-over at the Statue of Leonidas • Guided tour of the archaeological site at Artemision, famous for the GreekPersian naval battle in 480 BC • Time to explore Chalkis town on your own • Day 7: Heraklion • Arrival at Port in early morning; guided tour of the Knossos archaeological site with the Minoan Palace • Day 8: Chania-Suda • Guided tour of Chania to see the New Town and Old Town of the Cretan city with the second largest population after Heraklion •Guided tour of Souda Bay, one of the deepest natural harbors in the Mediterranean •Day 9: Athens • Arrival at Piraeus port in early morning; free day in Athens for sightseeing on your own and to mingle with locals • Farewell dinner at a restaurant in Athens •Day 10: Depart from Athens Airport
