ABOUT THE PLAY DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?

ADAPTOR’S NOTE

In this gripping ghost story, lawyer Arthur Kipps is desperate to banish the spirits of his past that continue to haunt him. To help him recount his spine-chilling tale, he enlists skeptical young actor to tell his tormenting saga.

The intent of the show is to frighten. The fear is not on a visual or visceral level, but an imaginative one. Darkness is a powerful ally of terror, something glimpsed in a corner is far more frightening than if it’s fully observed.

As a young lawyer, Kipps is sent to the mysterious Eel Marsh House to handle the estate of the deceased Mrs. Drablow. His inquiries are met with hesitation and silence from the local villagers. As he delves into the affairs of Mrs. Drablow, the secrets and unexplainable events of the mysterious house are uncovered leaving Kipps forever haunted.

There are anachronisms and geographical inconsistencies within the text. These are not mistakes, but indications of the neverland we inhabit when involved with the Woman in Black.

Set among eerie marshes, creeping fog and moaning winds an ominous specter of a woman in black appears…

Directors are unlikely to have much experience of ghost plays as there are relatively few around.

Stephen Mallatratt

This spell-binding ghost story uncovers the chilling answer to the question, who is the woman in black? Written for the stage by Stephen Malatratt, adapted from the book by Susan Hill, The Woman in Black is the second longest running production in London’s West End, playing since 1989.

“An edge-of-your-seat thriller” –DC Theatre Scene

“The Woman in Black is a truly terrifying theatrical experience” –I Love Manchester

CHAIR’S MESSAGE Welcome to The Woman in Black—the second production in Neptune’s 2021–2022 Season. Neptune Theatre is delighted to recognize and celebrate the ongoing and much appreciated generosity of our donors. We are reopen and presenting live theatre because of your donations, 50/50 tickets purchases, auction support and monthly donation commitments. Every contribution has sustained us during this challenging time. There are many opportunities to support your theatre. Leslie MacDonald, Neptune’s Director of Development and Partnerships is

always available to explore new and creative ways to assist Neptune. You can contact Leslie at lmacdonald@neptunetheatre.com Please note in our digital programs, we have added stars recognizing the longevity of gifting from our donors. On our pre-show scrims, we will be acknowledging and thanking Planned Gifts from patrons who have remembered Neptune. We still have a long road ahead of us and know that our supporters are there with us. Stay tuned for new fundraising initiatives and a matching donor drive that will help steady us as we continue to present exciting live theatre. Thank you for your ongoing generosity—we couldn’t do this without your help Paul Laberge

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE As you sit in our theatre, take a look around. Is everyone in the auditorium really there? Could it be that perhaps today we have been joined by a spirit, a ghost, the energy of someone visiting with us for a brief moment? I am really not sure. As the lights dim, pay very close attention. Is that a chill on the back of your neck? Welcome to our production of The Woman in Black. As we started gathering together after a shutdown of essentially 18 months to produce full-length plays, the thought of directing this play finally (it was scheduled to materialize in 2020) got me thinking about the art of storytelling. The magic and terror of this play comes in its simplicity. Two actors tell you a ghost story that will neptunetheatre.com

chill and alarm. Perfect for the lead up to All Hallows’ Eve. (If you are here at the theatre on Hallowe’en I send you my very best wishes and commend you on your bravery). We have had a delightfully spooky time creating today’s production for you. I would like to offer up thanks to the entire Neptune team for their hard work and dedication. As you read this note I am likely already working on a slightly more frivolous offering, our holiday show, the musical comedy for the whole family, Alice In Pantoland. That is quite the style jump! Welcome back to Neptune Theatre. If you enjoy the play tonight, please tell your friends and family to join us. But, I beg of you, so they can enjoy it entirely: NO SPOILERS!! Jeremy Webb Artistic Director NEPTUNE THEATRE_ 9

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE Welcome back to Neptune! I have enjoyed meeting and reconnecting with so many of you while checking your proof of vaccine. We want you to have a wonderful experience returning to Neptune and we are doing a number of things with your comfort in mind. We are maintaining our masking policy and physical distancing between seats and our team is continually working to guide patrons through our space. Most important of all, EVERYONE who enters the theatre, with the exception of children 12 years and younger, must be fully vaccinated. We have consulted with public health throughout the pandemic to ensure we are doing everything to make patrons feel

comfortable and confident in returning to Neptune. We plan to gradually ease our COVID protocols as vaccine rates increase and COVID case counts decrease. For now, patrons can adjust their masks to enjoy a beverage or concessions in the theatre, but we ask that you replace your mask for the rest of the performance. We will be reducing physical distancing between seats from 6 feet to 2 feet and seating patrons in alternating rows for The Woman In Black. We will not alternate rows for our holiday productions, however, we will be maintaining a “buffer zone” of one-seat of separation between groups or bubbles. I hope you have a wonderful and comfortable experience at Neptune. With my thanks, Lisa lbugden@neptunetheatre.com
