As people enjoy their summer activities, Chief Paul Januszewski would like to remind drivers to share the road and remain attentive while driving. With warmer weather, more bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians are outside. Residents should take caution and remember to follow the law while bicycling, walking, jogging and driving. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to share the road and take steps to stay safe, Chief Januszewski said. “This means understanding who else is on the road with you and being especially vigilant. To prevent accidents and injuries, the North Haven Fire Department recommends the following safety tips: Driving Safety Tips: Watch for pedestrians everywhere, at all times of the day. Avoid distracted driving and never use your cell phone or mobile device while driving. Yield to bicyclists as you would to a motor vehicle. Do not underestimate their speed, especially when making a turn that crosses their path. Be cautious at parking lots, stop signs, when backing up and when parking. Watch for other vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists at these times. Be cautious at night and during inclement weather when visibility may be poor. Be cautious at crosswalks. Slow down and prepare to stop when turning or nearing a crosswalk. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Stop a safe distance away from the crosswalk to give other vehicles ample time to see the pedestrians that are crossing so that they can also stop. Do not pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. Follow slower speed limits in neighborhoods with signage that children are present. Drivers turning right on red need to look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist that may be approaching from the right rear. Stop completely,
look left-right-left and behind, and then turn right on red. Give cyclists extra space. Do not pass them too closely. Bicycles and motorcycles can EH GLI¿FXOW WR VSRW EHFDXVH RI WKHLU VPDOOHU SUR¿OHV DQG EHcause drivers are conditioned to look for other cars, not cyclists. Remember that motorcyclists have the same privileges as other drivers. Be sure to give riders a full lane of travel, and always keep a close watch for motorcyclists - especially at intersections and on highways. Sport utility vehicles, delivery vans, and large trucks may block motorcyclists from your view. Anticipate a motorcyclist’s maneuvers. A piece of road debris that poses no threat to a car may be deadly for a motorcyclist. Predict evasive moves a motorcyclist might take by always being aware of your surroundings. Also, don’t follow motorcycles too closely. Allow enough room for the motorcyclist to take evasive actions. Drivers must always be aware of their surroundings. Remember: Check twice, save a life. Yield to emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on. Pull over as far as possible. When approaching emergency vehicles, SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER. Motorcycle & Bicycle Safety: Motorcyclists and bicyclists are also reminded to take safety precautions. These include: Making your presence known to drivers by wearing an appropriate helmet and contrasting FORWKLQJRUUHÀHFWLYHJHDU Avoiding riding in a driver’s blind spot. Being cautious of cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in a parking lot. Using proper turn signals. Always following the rules of the road. As always, the North Haven Fire Department hopes everyone has a safe, healthy and happy summertime!
North Haven Land Trust Board Members Meet Local Bee Keeper
North Haven: On July 10th, some of the North Haven Land Trust board members met with a local bee keeper, Tom Anderson, who erected two bee hives on one of our land trust properties that we call Pine Hill Estates. It is located between Beach Lane and Arrowdale Road consisting of around 11 acres. Mr. Anderson provided us with a live exhibit of active hives and informed us of the hierarchal nature of bees, the construction of their
hives, and overall the necessity of helping bees propagate as they are key pollinators. The North Haven Land Trust’s main goal is to educate the public on open space, accept any appropriate open space parcels, and providing habitat for wildlife. Please visit us on our website: northhavenlandtrust.org. for more information. Photo taken by our newest board member, Dan Hott.

UNFAILING PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY
Washington Memorial Funeral Home
Holy Saint Anthony, gentlest of Saints; your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (mention your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving Saint, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet infant Jesus, Who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. After the walk they stopped at the Saint Andrew’s Club on Chapel Street to enjoy delicious baked goods of cookies, brownies, cakes, cold water, juice and hot cappuccino coffee that was enjoyed by all. PROGRAM ON SOCIAL MEDIA INTEGRATION TOOLS On Wed., August 14, Miller Library will sponsor a workshop on using social media integration tools for marketing small businesses. The program will be held from 10:30am-12:00 noon in the Friends Room of Miller Memorial Central Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue. Everyone knows businesses must have a consistent presence on social media to remain competitive. However, business owners are too busy actually running their business to devote hours a day to manage their social media pages. This is why social media integration and productivity tools are critical in assisting the creation, scheduling, and posting of content to business social media pages. In this fun and interactive workshop, we will review several tools to improve a business’s social media presence while reducing the time spent managing this essential marketing element of entrepreneurship. Participants are encouraged to bring their mobile devices with downloaded social media apps to the program to obtain help with implementing these tools. Because space is limited, registration is required. Please register at hamdenlibrary.org or call (203) 287-2680.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car On a Hot Day! By Dr. Arnie Cary and Roberta Friedman
The proverbial “dog days of summerâ€? are here, and The Animal Haven in North Haven would like to remind you that your dog can die in a hot car, even if you’re gone for only a few minutes. Across the country each year, thousands of animals are needlessly lost this way. “We think we’re doing our beloved pets a favor by bringing them along for a car ride on a hot day,â€? says Dr. Arnie Cary, DVM, and board member of The Animal +DYHQ ÂłEXW ZKHQ D ÂżYHPLQXWH errand turns into a 10-15 minute one, the result can be lethal for the pet.â€? Cracking the windows to let in DLU LV QRW VXIÂżFLHQW QRU LV SDUNing in a shady spot—as the sun moves that shade can become full sun within minutes. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the temperature inside your car in the sun will increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. You may think it’s a pleasant 80 degrees, but that becomes 100 in the car in that short time. In 20 minutes it can increase by 30 degrees to 110, and in only 40 minutes, almost 40 degrees, to 120. Dogs typically do very poorly in the heat, so these temperatures are killers. They don’t perspire
like we do, and the only way they can cool themselves is by panting, which evaporates moisture from the upper respiratory tract. A hot car makes for very poor evaporation conditions, causing your dog’s body temperature to increase rapidly, which leads to heat stroke and brain damage in a very short time. In Connecticut, under certain circumstances, people can be charged with animal cruelty for leaving their pet in a parked vehicle in adverse weather. If you see a dog in a car on a hot day, the Humane Society advises you to record the car’s make, model, and license plate number, try to alert the owner by asking nearby businesses to make an announcement, and call animal control or the police’s non-emergency number. Stay with the dog if you can until help arrives. The term “dog days of summer originated with the Greeks, and referred to the time when Sirius, the dog star, rose before the sun. This usually happened during the hottest time of the year. It has come to mean days that are so hot, even dogs don’t want to do much but lie around. So, remember to take this advice “Sirius-ly, and never leave your dog in the car in the summer heat, for any length of time.

All the volunteers say I do great with leash walking. I would do best in an adult only home with no other pets so I can be the focus of your love and attention. Pictured Above: Eric Larson teaches how to identify and control invasive plants. Right: Samples of Oriental bittersweet, a vine that strangles trees. North Haven: The Daytime Gardeners hosted a presentation by Eric Larson, Coordinator of the Master Gardener Program for New Haven County, about Connecticut Invasive Plants. Based on the level of attendance, there are many people interested and concerned about invasive plants. Larson explained how a plant is labeled as ‘invasive’, and what to do about them if they are on your property. The CT Invasive Plants list, issued by the University of CT Invasive Plant Working Group, provides names and information DERXWZKLFKSODQWVDUHLGHQWLÂżHGDVLQYDVLYH The criteria includes that these plants: ¡ are not native to CT ¡ produce and disperse seeds widely ¡ is naturalized or may become naturalized ZLWKEHQHÂżWRIFXOWLYDWLRQ ¡ thrives in a variety of habitats ¡ crowds out natives ¡ threatens bio-diversity ¡ forms dense, single-species stands of growth Invasive plants may be trees (Norway Maple, Black Locust, Ailanthus or Tree of Heaven), shrubs (‘Winged Euonymous’ often called Burning Bush), vines (Oriental bittersweet, Mile a Minute vine), and perennials (Mugwort. Japanese Knotweed). Invasive plants often produce many, many seeds. In some cases, they produce berries which are eaten and then dispersed by birds. Other invasives may spread by rhizomes, which are fast growing roots that run horizontally underground. (OLPLQDWLRQRIWKHVHLQYDVLYHSODQWVFDQEHGLIÂżFXOWEHFDXVHWKH\DUHSHUVLVWHQW in their growth and are designed to maintain themselves. Cutting down an Ailanthus, or Tree of Heaven, will result in many more shoots popping up near the main trunk and can grow up to 8 feet a year. The Japanese Knotweed will regrow from any little piece of rhizome that may be left in the ground when trying to pull it out. Euonymus will grow from underground root nodes that may remain, and from the berries that fell when the large shrub was removed. Oriental bittersweet, which is a pretty vine with orange and red fruit, grows very rapidly, forming a woody vine that wraps around trees and shades out the canopy. This vine can be cut at the ground level and it will die, saving the tree from a slow, certain death. Larson provided some tips to assist with control of these plants. Many of the plants can be cut off at the stump. Then, about 2 cups of salt water should be injected into the stump with a large syringe. This is best done in the fall when the sap is moving down towards the roots. The Japanese Knotweed should be cut back before the Ă€RZHUVHPHUJHLQPLGODWHVXPPHU7KLVSUHYHQWVWKHĂ€RZHUVIURPSURGXFLQJEHUULHV IRUWKHELUGVWRGLVVHPLQDWH7KHELUGVZLOOÂżQGRWKHUEHUULHVWRHDWDQGWKHVWXPSV can be injected with salt water. Small weeds that are just emerging can be sprayed with a solution of white vinegar, salt, and some detergent. This will kill the leaves but it may need to be repeated until the roots die off. This is best done on a hot, sunny day when the plants are already stressed due to heat. It is important to be careful about disposal of the invasive plant material. Do not put this in your compost! If placed in a black plastic trash bag and left if the hot sun, the plant material should die in several days. Then it can be thrown out with the trash.
