North Haven: Marlene Thorp, program coordinator and members of the North Haven Senior Center took a trip to a baseball game in New Britain to see the New Britain Bees. The seniors left from the senior center by the center’s bus that was driven by Keith Baedor, the center’s transportation driver. It was a beautiful smooth bus ride on a sunny morning, there was a lot of chatter, laughter and excitement throughout the bus. While arriving at the stadium, there were many school buses full of children from many Connecticut towns. The lines were long entering the stadium, the children wore many different colored shirts with the name of the town they come from on them. While the North Haven seniors entered the baseball stadium they were greeted by the Bee’s mascot and was kind to take a photo with the seniors. There was a lot of excitement throughout the stadium, the game started, everyone clapped, screamed as hits and scores were made. All of a sudden in the 5th inning it started pouring, lightning, everyone ran for cover, the game had a rain delay and unfortunately the Bee’s lost. The day wasn’t a total loss, we were with friends, had great laughs, had a lunch of a hotdog, chips and soda that was included with our cost of the baseball ticket. There will be other trips that we can go on with our friends for the senior center, what is better than that? Story and photos by Jo-Ann Buccetti

PROGRAM ON SOCIAL MEDIA INTEGRATION TOOLS On Wed., August 14, Miller Library will sponsor a workshop on using social media integration tools for marketing small businesses. The program will be held from 10:30am-12:00 noon in the Friends Room of Miller Memorial Central Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue. Everyone knows businesses must have a consistent presence on social media to remain competitive. However, business owners are too busy actually running their business to devote hours a day to manage their social media pages. This is why social media integration and productivity tools are critical in assisting the creation, scheduling, and posting of content to business social media pages. In this fun and interactive workshop, we will review several tools to improve a business’s social media presence while reducing the time spent managing this essential marketing element of entrepreneurship. Participants are encouraged to bring their mobile devices with downloaded social media apps to the program to obtain help with implementing these tools. Because space is limited, registration is required. Please register at hamdenlibrary.org or call

During the Victorian age, there were many rules and regulations surrounding death that dictated the wearing of heavy black clothing, black jewelry, and the observance of mourning behavior. While these customs have been generally relegated to the past, the practice of wearing black ribbons and armbands survives as a public display of the wearer’s mourning status. After observing the proper period of private mourning, those who have lost a family member or friend may wish to continue to remember the deceased in public in a way that conveys their sadness in an observable yet discreet manner. Not only does a black ribbon help
mourners continue their observance of mourning, but it alerts onlookers of their special status When deciding what to wear to a funeral it is always best to go conservative. While it’s true that you don’t have to wear black, you should dress in a way that shows respect. That means avoiding EULJKWFRORUVÀDVK\SULQWVDQGJOLWtery fabrics. If you are interested in learning more about the services we offer, please call 203-239-1179 or visit our facility at 36 Washington Avenue. We listen carefully to what your wishes are and pay attention to every detail as we carry them out.

North Haven: A group of special friends get together every year in may at 12:30pm at the North Haven Senior Center for a game of bocce. They have so much fun, they are constantly laughing throughout each game. They play at least four games, depending how fast the game is played they can play more. There’s no arguing, but there’s a lot of discussion on how close one’s bocce ball is for a point. It takes a little skill and a lot of luck to see how close you can get to the bocce ball for a point. When the games are over, everyone shakes hands, give hugs and wishes everyone well until the next day to play. The game is played every Monday, Wednesday and Friday weather permitting at 12:30pm. To The Editor: August 15, 2019 The North Haven Democrat Party is a mess, and its leadership a shambles. Democracy, by universal understanding, provides for a clear and open discussion and presentation by debate, major points of view, in order that Voters may pick the Party Representative who best represents the majority of the Voters, and act in the Voters best interests. North Haven Democrat Party seems to have forgotten (or disregarded) this sacred obligation (yet once AGAIN) to provide a FULL slate of candidates, especially for the top position of First Selectman. They should be ashamed that they have failed to uphold their part in the democratic process. While it is undisputed that the incumbent (Mr. Freda) has done a good to very good job, there must be some aspects that the Democrats could raise the alarm on. (Just look at BOS meetings) Instead, the Dems “cower in their cornerâ€? and once again fail to provide an open, honest, and fair forum for the Voters to observe, then choose. Shame, shame! But wait, look down at the Fire Commission ballot. The Dems have chosen to attempt to displace a 25 year veteran, PROVEN commissioner, Peter Criscuolo, (a good, dedicated man I’ll support) whose whole 25 years has been spent totally dedicated to the good and welfare of said Department, a man who has raised over $100,000 for unfunded, vital, equipment, with an unknown, posVLEO\XQTXDOLÂżHGFDQGLGDWH:K\"&HUWDLQO\WRWKHDYHUDJH9RWHUWKH motives are suspect. Question & Answer - Dr. Richard Durocher Q: I have recently increased walking and running
and noticed that I am getting blisters on my feet. How can I prevent them and how should they be treated?
A: Blisters are usually produced by friction, and will often result
from shoes that are not broken in yet, wearing worn-out socks and loose shoes. The shearing causes irritation, redness and HYHQWXDOO\VHSDUDWLRQRIWKHVNLQOD\HUVZLWKĂ€XLG7KHVHFDQ become painful and large if not treated early. 7RSUHYHQWEOLVWHUVZHDUVKRHVDQGVRFNVWKDWÂżWDSSURSULDWHO\ $YRLGVRFNVWKDWDUHWRRÂżEURXVRUORRVHÂżWWLQJ.HHSWKHVNLQ lubricated by applying petroleum jelly to the area before activity. Popping blisters is not a good idea, since this could allow infection into the area. Very small blisters (1/4 cm) should not be popped. As a blister gets larger and more painful, it should be de-roofed followed by application of antibiotic ointment or Dr. Richard W. Durocher, cream and a Band-Aid until it is healed. Podiatrist & Surgeon If you repeatedly get blisters, consult the podiatrist for evalu%RDUG&HUWLÂżHG ation. Repeated shearing may be due to the foot functioning improperly in shoe gear. Orthotics may also help adjust the foot Member of the American College and improve its function in shoe gear. Of Foot & Ankle Surgeons Contact Dr. Durocher for further evaluation.
