North Haven: The North Haven Historical Society and Museums sponsored its ÂżUVWIXQGUDLVHUIRUWKH0DUWKD&XOYHU+RXVH Restoration Fund. The Rising Sun Tavern was open to the public at the start of the holiday season, and all donations made that day were deposited to the restoration fund. A highlight of the open house was a visit by members of the Fifth Connecticut Regiment, a recreated New England Continental regiment. According to their website, they “are dedicated to educating the public on the role the State of Connecticut and its citizens played in the creation of these United States through the display of uniforms, camp life, tactics, crafts, weapons and accouterments of the period.â€? The group was represented by Bill Duncan, who acted as a British soldier, Henry Bessonett, who played the Tavern’s innkeeper and a colonial soldier, and Alice Bessonett, who represented the innkeeper’s wife. Approximately 120 people attended the event, and $800 was collected. Thank you, everyone! ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR FEELINGS There is no doubt that the death of a loved one will prompt those left behind to experience a variety of feelings ranging from disbelief to yearning and resentment. These emotions are a natural response to loss, which helps us cope and make sense of death. At the same time, we may feel so threatened and vulnerable that we try to bottle up our feelings in an effort to go forward. As we experience this FRQĂ€LFW EHWZHHQ GHHS VRUURZ and self-preservation, it is important that our emotions be given full expression. Crying is not only an appropriate expression of grief, but it is soothing and necessary for relieving stress. Allowing oneself to feel vulner-
able is an act of strength. Grief is a normal and natural response to loss. Grieving loss is important because it allows us to ‘free-up’ energy that is bound to the lost person, object, or experience - so that we might re-invest that energy elsewhere. Hamden: Spring Glen Girl Scout Cadet Troop #60340 has unveiled a “Free Library at Spring Glen School in Hamden, Conn. The new library installed on the playground of Spring Glen Elementary School is the culmination of a year-long project to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve and the third highest award in Girl Scouts of the USA. The award requires girls to independently research and implement a community project with lasting impact. In the research phase, the girls in troop #60340 realized there are some children at Spring Glen cannot afford to buy books or can’t always get to a public library to borrow books. The “Free Library idea was immediately chosen since it promotes both literacy skills and community engagement with its focus on “Take a Book, Leave a Book. The girls, all 6th graders built and painted the library with original designs. Their dedication to literacy has created a lasting mark on the community of Spring Glen School community. As the girls head to middle school later this year, the care and upkeep of the library will be left to a junior girl scout troop at the school. It is troop #60340’s hope the library will continue to inspire young readers in the exchange of knowledge, reading and learning for years to come.

Pictured (L-R): State Sen. Len Fasano, First Selectman of North Haven Micheal Freda and State Representative Dave Yaccarino at the North Haven Senior Center, located at 189 Pool Rd., on Friday, January 26, 2018. North Haven: On Friday, January 26, 2018, Rep. Yaccarino and Sen. Fasano held a Senior Update at the North Haven Senior Center, located at 189 Pool Rd., in North Haven from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A large part of the discussion centered on the Medicare Savings Plan (MSP) and the legislature working in a bipartisan way to restore MSP after Gov. Dannel Malloy vetoed the bill earlier this month. The legislators vowed to keep residents informed and up-to-date as information unfolds at the Capitol with the 2018 legislative session commencing on February 7. As of right now, the portion of MSP that helps pay for prescriptions is still funded until December of 2018. As far as the Medicare premium and cost shares, that portion will be paid for until June of 2018. The legislators also stated that they hope to come back into special session to take up the MSP override by Wednesday, January 31, to take action and overturn the governor’s veto. “Over 500 seniors and disabled individuals in North Haven survive off of a limited income and rely on help from the state for critical services, said Rep. Yaccarino. “My colleagues and I worked diligently to call the legislature back in for a special session to restore funding to the Medicare Savings Program in Fiscal Year 2018, which seniors and individuals with disabilities depend on to help pay their medical bills. Animals Get by with a Little Help from Their Friends
With the ridiculously frigid weather Connecticut has been experiencing, you might not be aware of the animals who live outdoors 365 days a year and so do not have the option of escaping the cold. And while it is true that wild animals are pretty much acclimated to the outdoors, moulting into a thicker coat of feathers or fur for example, elderly animals, including pets are not used to below zero temps and stand a very slim chance of surviving. Water n’ Webs Rehab Centre recently admitted an adult house wren who seemed perfectly healthy except for appearing a bit lethargic. An exam revealed a healthy weight with no injuries and no leg or wing abnormalities.

huddle together in the houses to keep warm. 3) Consider leaving some food outside for wildlife. Ducks and geese will relish cracked corn. Squirrels will appreciate some peanuts in the shell left at the base of a tree or scattered in the park or your own backyard. 4) Never throw food scraps away. Leave them outside ANYWHERE and you will provide a hungry animal with sustenance that might just mean the difference between life and death.
5) And don’t forget your pets. All should be brought inside on bitter nights. If you have ducks and geese, provide a windbreak of stacked hay bales and an open water source. Be sure to check that they do not become frozen into the ice and of course predator protection is available with an electric fence system. Should you notice any animal not being provided the minimum of food, water and shelter, do not hesitate to alert the local animal FRQWURORI¿FHUIRUKHOS
