THE NEW YEAR IS COMING QUICKLY, ARE YOU PREPARED???? With the New Year coming on us quickly we should all give thought to what will happen to our spouses and children if we die prematurely. Most people put off planning because they will be around for many more years which means that there is plenty of time to do their Estate Planning. This is not always the way life happens. Let’s look at several situations and what would be the outcome if you were to pass tomorrow. 1. You have a spouse, no parents and no children: Your spouse would take the entire estate. 2. You have a spouse, no children & a living parent: Your spouse would take the first $100K and 75% of the rest. The parent would take the other 25%. 3. You have a spouse & children (of both you and your spouse). Your spouse would take the first $100K and 50% of the balance and the children would take the remaining 50%. 4. You have a spouse & children that are not of your spouse. Your spouse would take 50% of the estate and the children would take the rest. You may say “I love all of my children and my parents regardless of the fact that some are mine and some are my spouse’s”. But wait. What if the parent that survives you is now living in a nursing home and receiving aid from the government. Those benefits will stop until all of the 25% of your assets are spent. Your parent would have to re-apply to the government again. But wait. Your child may be applying for college tuition aid. The money from you will have to be gone before they can apply. All of this can be fixed by having an Estate Plan where you can provide for any or all of these possible (or probable) issues.

Life-Science Sprints in CT Campaign and SPRINT Internship Program Launch

The New Haven Region’s bioscience companies are joining together to launch the SPRINT (Student Program to Ready Interns for Next-generation Talent) internship program. The goal is to provide over 100 paid job opportunities in the life sciences industry in Summer 2022 for students attending Connecticut Colleges and Universities as well as students with ties to Connecticut. The New Haven Regional Bioscience Collaborative was formed in May 2021 as part of the work of the Governor’s Workforce Council and with industry leadership and support provided by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. The paid internship program coincides with the launch of a new campaign to increase the visibility of the life-science industry in the region and Connecticut -- “Life-Science Sprints in Connecticut.” The campaign is a concerted effort to continue to grow the bioscience sector. The SPRINT internship program brings together emerging and established companies across the life-science industry in Connecticut. These internships will offer a wide variety of opportunities across scientific, commercial, finance, and adminis-

trative functions and all applicants will be eligible to participate in skill workshops. The initiative includes focused outreach to diverse candidates and selected interns will have the chance to get a broader understanding of the life-science industry through rotational talks at various companies. Governor Ned Lamont has engaged business leaders to address economic development and talent recruitment and retention. Through his leadership and the work of his Governor’s Workforce Council, the goal of this collaborative is to cultivate and promote the benefits of Greater New Haven as a prominent region for bioscience growth and development. The initiative has three components to build a sustainable pipeline of talent, increase awareness and visibility through branding, and expand lab space and infrastructure to support bioscience industry growth. Individuals interested in learning more about the internship program should visit: www.Life SciSprints.com for information and to register for alerts. Applications for summer internships will open in early 2022 and resources for applying will be available in November 2021.

Pictured: Marisa Martin, a resident of Meriden and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, recently received a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Awards from the Society recognizing her dedication to its life-saving mission. Meriden: The American Cancer Society recently presented a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award to Marisa Martin, a Meriden resident. The award is the most honored accolade by the Society in New England. It recognizes Martin’s remarkable accomplishments in support of the Society’s mission to celebrate lives, to save lives and to lead the fight for a world without cancer. A volunteer with Relay for Life of Meriden-Wallingford for the past 16 years, Martin has helped register and welcome hundreds of participants to local fundraising events with a warm, welcoming smile. Society staff say she is often the first person to greet participants at our team meetings, fundraisers and to the walk event itself and the last person

to leave an event, lending a hand to staff, event leadership team members and volunteers. Martin is known for creating recognition signs for teams to post at their campsites, which display the number of years each team has participated in Relay For Life, and personally delivering the signs each year. She also personally reaches out to past team captains, participant’s and volunteers to encourage them to stay involved with Relay For Life year after year. Before and after retiring from Cooper Atkins in 2020, Martin encouraged her former employer to support Relay For Life with a corporate sponsorship and employee team fundraising efforts such as daffodils and dress down days. She participated in Relay First Lap on Jan. 9, 2021, taking walking locally in a ceremonial “first lap of the season” on the same day as participants from around the world. She also was instrumental with the planning of the Relay for Life of Meriden-Wallingford car parade in 2020, reaching out to teams and sponsors. “Marisa is a calm presence at our Relay For Life event, working hard to make each team to feel special,” said Lynn Kipphut, community development manager with the American Cancer Society. “I have seen her demonstrate compassion with cancer survivors, caregivers and their families as they arrive and need assistance. Marisa treats everyone with respect and works with all members of our diverse Relay family. She cares deeply and is genuinely concerned about others and always looking to lift anyone’s spirits. Her sense of humor, contagious laugh and big smile are the reason she is a favorite among our teams and volunteers.” The Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award is named in honor of the late Sandra C. Labaree, a longtime American Cancer Society volunteer from Maine. Despite her death from breast cancer in 2000, Labaree’s spirit and values live on through this award. Each year, the local area Board selects the most inspired and passionate individuals to receive this prestigious honor whose service best exemplifies the Society’s organizational values of mission, stewardship, diversity, datadriven, and respect. For more information on how to become a volunteer for the American Cancer Society or about the Society’s programs and services, please visit www.Cancer.org or call 800-227-2345.

Exceptional Service & Respect at a Difficult Time

BUYING A CEMETERY PLOT

When it’s time to arrange your funeral, if it is your wish to be buried, you will need to own a burial plot in a cemetery. Although plots can be purchased at the time of your death, people often secure them in advance, usually saving on costs. Cemeteries offer several types of options for in-ground burial. Depending on the cemetery, plots for couples, called companion plots, and those for one person are typically available, as are family burial plots. Prices vary state by state and can be determined by plot size, so it may be more economical to consider the family option. It’s a good idea to gather as much information as possible and consider all your options before deciding. QUOTE: “He spoke well who said that graves are the footprints of angels.” -Henry Wadsworh Longfellow

At North Haven Funeral Home, we pride ourselves on our ability to personalize and individualize each funeral service so that it is a truly memorable experience and a fitting tribute. We offer many unique and special services that set us apart from other funeral homes. The way a person is remembered is as unique as the person him or herself. We listen carefully to what your wishes are and pay attention to every detail as we carry them out. For more information, please call 203-239-1179. We welcome you to stop by our tastefully appointed facility at 36 Washington Avenue.
