To The Editor: November 15, 2021 It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With family gatherings, gift swaps and midnight toasts quickly approaching this holiday season, Anheuser-Busch and Dichello Distributors, Inc. are more thankful than ever to be a part of your festivities. Whether you’re raising a glass at a loved one’s house or celebrating with a night on the town, remember to keep yourself and your community safe. If you’ll be spreading holiday cheer with an ice-cold beer or two, don’t forget to plan ahead for a safe ride. There is an average of 300,000 daily incidents and 10,000 annual fatalities related to alcohol-impaired driving in the U.S. – and this problem is 100% preventable. That’s why we’ve joined forces with Anheuser-Busch, Mothers $JDLQVW 'UXQN 'ULYLQJ 0$'' DQG 8EHU LQ D ¿UVW RI LWV NLQG LQGXVWU\ coalition that is focused on ending drunk driving. In a new initiative called Decide To Ride, we are encouraging everyone to plan ahead for a safe ride home, before the celebrations even begin – because you can’t drive drunk if you don’t drive there. For more than 35 years, Anheuser-Busch and its wholesaler partners have invested more than $1 billion in responsible drinking initiatives and community-based programs to prevent underage drinking, impaired driving and other harmful uses of alcohol. At Dichello Distributors Inc., we’re proud to work alongside Anheuser-Busch to ensure that we keep our friends, families and neighbors safe by planning ahead for a safe ride home. Cheers to a safe, happy and healthy holiday season! Tony Lota, Alcohol Awareness Coordinator Dichello Distributors, Inc., Orange CT

North Haven district students will vote via Google Form the week of December 6th. Citizen Google Forms will be available between December 6th and December 10th. Paper ballots will also be available at the Senior Center, Library, and Town Hall. Proof of residency (such as a photocopy of a driver’s license or bill showing a North Haven address) will be required for all non-student citizens to ensure this is truly a community effort. The new mascot will be announced at the December 13th special Board of Education meeting where all are invited to attend. Links to the Google Forms and paper ballots will be available as the vote approaches. The NHMC would like to sincerely thank all those who submitted their ideas, even if they weren’t chosen. The level of participation is a clear indication of the commitment to community many have here in North Haven. Any questions can be directed to mascot@northhaveschools. org.

“MIRACLE CREEK” SELECTED FOR NOVEMBER BOOK DISCUSSION What would you do to improve your child’s life? Would you pull up roots and move to a country on the other side of the world? Hamden Dept. of Rec. Selects Venice Bakery As Its 2021 Town Holiday Ornament Hamden: The Hamden Department of Recreation has selected Venice Bakery to be featured as its 2021 holiday ornament, the 30th in a series of annual ornaments featuring Hamden landmarks. Venice Bakery, now celebrating 80 years in business is run by third generation owner and head baker Bruno Castaldi who is proud to continue his family tradition of baking fresh Krusty breads overnight and throughout the day to serve the neighborhood, customers, restaurants and local markets. Many corner bakeries have closed due to supermarket competition, so when you walk through the doors of Venice Bakery, 1769 Dixwell Ave., the aroma of freshly baked bread is a rare delight. The bakery specializes in biscotti, stuffed breads, croutons, taralli, freselle, hard rolls, sub rolls, round and twist breads, breadcrumbs and two sizes of Italian loaves. Castaldi boasts: “We continue to do everything by hand except shaping our long loaves.” Venice offers 22 different varieties of stuffed breads, selling them in foil baking bags to walk-in customers and retail markets. Castaldi works with two experienced bakers overnight and with his two sons and daughter during the day. A super idea to share with family and friends during the holidays! The pewter ornaments, printed on both sides, are $10 each, and come with a brief narrative about the ornament in a display case. Also available are ornaments from recent years: Johnson Lanes (2020), Freedom Park honoring POW & MIA (2016); Town Center Park/Rotary Pavilion (2015); Hamden Memorial Library (2013); Hamden Police Dept. (2012); Hamden Middle School (2010) each being sold for $10. Ornaments from earlier years are also available at a reduced rate of $5 each while supplies last. THE NEW YEAR IS COMING QUICKLY, ARE YOU PREPARED???? With the New Year coming on us quickly we should all give thought to what will happen to our spouses and children if we die prematurely. Most people put off planning because they will be around for many more years which means that there is plenty of time to do their Estate Planning. This is not always the way life happens. Let’s look at several situations and what would be the outcome if you were to pass tomorrow. 1. You have a spouse, no parents and no children: Your spouse would take the entire estate. 2. You have a spouse, no children & a living parent: Your spouse would take the first $100K and 75% of the rest. The parent would take the other 25%. 3. You have a spouse & children (of both you and your spouse). Your spouse would take the first $100K and 50% of the balance and the children would take the remaining 50%. 4. You have a spouse & children that are not of your spouse. Your spouse would take 50% of the estate and the children would take the rest. You may say “I love all of my children and my parents regardless of the fact that some are mine and some are my spouse’s”. But wait. What if the parent that survives you is now living in a nursing home and receiving aid from the government. Those benefits will stop until all of the 25% of your assets are spent. Your parent would have to re-apply to the government again. But wait. Your child may be applying for college tuition aid. The money from you will have to be gone before they can apply. All of this can be fixed by having an Estate Plan where you can provide for any or all of these possible (or probable) issues.

Exceptional Service & Respect at a Difficult Time

A WAKE

A wake is a solemn service usually occurring before a funeral. It can take place days prior to or the day of the actual funeral service. Traditionally, wakes take place in the home, but more often these days, funeral homes now serve as a venue. Wakes are sometimes referred to as visitations or viewings, which are typically less formal. These events offer a chance for the deceased’s family and friends to gather together to share memories and celebrate the deceased’s life. During a wake, loved ones will also come together to comfort one another and pay their final respects. The remains may or may not be present. Wakes are not the same as funerals or memorial services. QUOTE: “When it’s time to die, let us not discover that we have never lived.” -Henry David Thoreau

When you meet with a member of our staff to discuss your arrangements, we’ll ask you about your loved one to gain an understanding of the person the services will honor. Our professionals will use this information to guide you in the creation of a personalized, meaningful celebration of your loved one’s life. We can assist you in planning and coordinating all of the details of a funeral service. To learn more, please call 203-239-1179. North Haven Funeral Home is located at 36 Washington Avenue.
