Pastoral Letter ‘For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ Jeremiah 29, verse 11 Jeremiah was prophesying to the Jews exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem, which fell in 587BC. Not only a theological statement of God’s provision and care for His chosen people, but a ‘political statement’ about God’s intention to use the fragile changing political scene to bring God’s redeeming love in returning the exiled families and those not yet born to their ancestral home in Jerusalem. Marion and I recently joined a number of others from the village on a Saturday for the ‘Unlock’ walk around Clapham and Battersea in South London. This was to show support to Churches and congregations in a very different situation than here in Wisborough Green. One of the Churches we visited was Holy Trinity, Clapham, a Grade 1 Listed Building, which was the spiritual home of William Wilberforce and the Clapham Sect - Christian Social Reformers from the early nineteenth century. They campaigned for many years for the repeal of slavery which was eventually passed throughout the British Empire in 1833. Sadly slavery is still with us, illegally, in many forms, even here in the UK. Yet William Wilberforce used politics to bring about change and this has been the way our constitutional system works here in Britain. I remember on a visit overseas during national elections in one country that we passed by a large military unit with armoured vehicles and heavily armed soldiers, seemly 5 guarding a small suburban house, “What’s going on here?” I asked our guide. “That’s the main opposition party Headquarters where no one is allowed to visit without being photographed and searched”. We can be thankful that we do not experience intimidation like that here. The Jews, whom Jeremiah was addressing with God’s words, did return to Jerusalem eventually. Some had left as children and returned seventy years later. Kings, rulers, tyrant dictators and even politicians come and go, but God’s love remains constant for those who trust in Him, for the plans He has to prosper those who follow Him.

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. Wisborough Glee needs a Musical Director Our women’s choir is 28 strong and we are in need of a new MD from September. We love to sing popular music of different genres and eras to the best of our ability, while having fun! We meet on Tuesdays in term time 7.30pm – 8.30pm. Some of us read music and our MD provides audio tracks of our parts to help us practice between rehearsals. We sing music in two and three parts and use backing tracks for our accompaniment. We would like a new MD who is friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging, who is skilled at selecting, and sometimes arranging, repertoire for us and who will conduct our local performances 3-4 times per year

Wisborough Green Primary School News Everything has gone slightly wild at Wisborough this term! Our summer has started with lots of fun and fitness - including a daily 1km run every morning to wake us all up. The children are loving the additional exercise and it is making a difference to their focus and attention in class too. During 'Mental Health Awareness Week', we all took some time to review our bedtime routines. The children reduced their screen time and took up colouring and making Lego creations instead. Everyone took part in some meditation exercises to recharge their batteries. We certainly felt refreshed! Throughout the summer term we will continue to focus on keeping healthy. The swimming pool is open again and everyone is enjoying their weekly splash time. The children will also have a chance to learn some additional bike skills, our home grown produce will be harvested, cooked and eaten and our sports fortnight sounds amazing! To help improve our carbon footprint, we have some environmentally friendly ideas on our travel plan. Tesco Bags of Help is an exciting local community grant scheme, where the money raised from the 5p bag charge is being used to fund community projects. Throughout May and June we would love you to support our GREEN project by posting a token in one of the following stores - Pulborough, Billingshurst Express and Storrington. If we collect the most tokens we will be given ÂŁ4000 to support our project! We currently have a few additional spaces, across the school, for September. Nature Notes We are now watching one of our dormer windows with interest. Tucked up under one corner a pair of starlings is feeding some noisy youngsters. Its seven years since they graced us with their presence. That’s when our old stable block went off to the ABC sanctuary, taking their favoured nest site with it! We’re delighted to have them back and by the time you read this I’m sure they’ll be hopping and chattering all over the garden. Such cheeky birds, I love them! A hobby has been spotted several times over Bedham, and a cuckoo too. Another cuckoo was reported in Kirdford, and, best of all, one flew right overhead as I was standing outside the back door! It landed in our big oak tree, called twice, flew to the next tree and called again, before flying off towards the village. The last time I had such a good view I was in Spain! So that’s made my Spring! We’ve heard a distant nightingale, and I’ve had reports from several people that Glebe Way is the place to be at night. They’ve been singing in the daytime up at Harsfold too, before they pair up and settle down. It’s lovely to have them back. And although the Bedham Quarry peregrines have had their nest destroyed, there are now youngsters on view at Chichester Cathedral. Check in with the RSPB and maybe visit? There’s a special viewing area with telescopes etc. The day before yesterday as I came in the gate I heard a loud humming. I looked down at the herb bed and realised that a low-spreading cotoneaster was busy with lots of bumblebees. They are here again today, at least three different species, including white and buff tailed. They’re workers, I think, as all quite small. The flowers are just 13 opening now and they skip and weave between them finding the nectar. And we found a nest the other day in the drive. At first glance it looks quite large - about six inches long and three wide – lots of careful weaving of sheep’s wool, and moss and lichen and lots of the thinnest strands of grass making a wonderfully secure structure. But the actual nest space is barely an inch across, and the same deep. We think it’s a goldcrest. I saw the female a while ago. They used to nest in the pine tree we lost, so we were very happy to see her back. But I fear the magpies or crows may have ousted her. No sign of broken ‘eggy’ bits, so hopefully no casualties. But how sad - all that hard work by such a tiny bird may have been in vain. Lastly - there’s always a robin isn’t there - our National Bird. Anyone visiting the village café will meet an enterprising and acrobatic one. They are ground feeders, not built for clinging to things, but Freddie took this picture of ‘his’ robin who regularly takes a few seeds for his/her babies. Hooray! Sue J

WISBOROUGH GREEN SUMMER FESTIVAL GOES WILD! Preparations are well under way for this year’s annual school fundraiser, the WGPS Summer Festival on Saturday 17th June on the Green! This year’s theme is 'Wild Wisborough' in keeping with the topic the children have been studying this term and incorporates everything ‘wildlife’. Once again there will be lots of fun activities for all the family including plenty of stalls, fun and games, our shopping village, food, beverages and of course, live music from 4pm. There will be plenty of opportunities to dine and enjoy what will hopefully be a summer’s eve right up until 7pm. The Festival will start in traditional style with the May Queen procession and May Pole dance, and will feature some exciting new events throughout the day. We really would love to see everyone and very much appreciate the support of the community and local businesses in supporting this vital fundraiser for our village school.

CALLING ALL YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS This year’s Festival will feature, a Wild Wisborough Photography Competition for all budding young photographers in the area. Divided into age categories, the children will be asked to capture the essence of Wisborough Green’s natural beauty be that its wildlife, flora or general landscape. Entry forms can be obtained from the school 14 office or from wisboroughgreenschoolpta@gmail.com. All entrants must be Under 12 and entries must be received by Friday 10th June. Trip to the Bluebell Railway On Wednesday 3rd May, not one, but two, minibuses headed off to East Sussex on the latest Village Community Minibus special outing – to the Bluebell Railway. With the Wisborough Green minibus over subscribed for the trip, an additional bus from Petworth was “commandeered” so no-one missed out.

From Sheffield Park Station, where everyone spent time in the railway museum, the locomotive sheds and the station restaurant for lunch, it was “all 17 aboard” for the twenty mile return steam trip to East Grinstead, stopping briefly en route at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote stations – all built in the traditional “Queen Anne” style in 1882 by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway company. And for the eagle-eyed there was a chance to spot locations along the railway for film and television programmes including Downton Abbey, The Railway Children and The Woman in Black. The Bluebell Railway visit followed those recently to the planetarium at Chichester and Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and, in the past, to West Dean Gardens, Parham House and back-stage at Chichester Festival Theatre. More “specials” are in the pipeline for the summer, co-ordinated by Kate Vernalls and Minibus Association Wisborough Green Divisional Organiser Pat Farmer. The visits are in addition to the regular weekly “shopping” trips to Horsham, Cranleigh, Worthing, Chichester and Guildford and, of course, the village minibus is available for all to use. And, yes, the bluebells were out along the tracks of the Bluebell Railway! Roger Moody

Second RunWisborou For the second year, we were blessed with good weather, a host of enthusiastic runners, walkers, helpers and spectators creating a fantastic Wisborough Green atmosphere! In all 507 completed the 10 and 5k races with 178 children and wheel chair competitors completing the colour run. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still totting up the numbers but expect to have raised ÂŁ6,000 towards the new sports pavilion which is a fantastic result. Village runners put in some great times with Pete Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connell leading the way with a great second place in the 5k followed by two fantastic times for junior runners Oskar Crook and Jacob Ball in 5th and 7th place respectively. In the 10k our first villager home was Phil Maggs with a great time of 42:40.

Annual UNLOCK Walk - 29th April 2017 Battersea has changed in the past few years and we found that the Unlock Walk was visiting a much richer area of London than in the past. In spite of this the Shaftsbury Christian Centre serves on an estate where 44 of children are below the poverty line. The Centre hosts regular free meals, support for lone parents and specialist advice on benefits, housing and debts. The Unlock Walkers completed the 8 miles in record time - perhaps because of the lack of home made cakes in the c hur c hes ! (T his was a gr e at disappointment - especially as Clive and Marion were led to expect cakes nearly to the standard of Xpresso!)

It was a joy to share with Christians in inner city London and to witness their love of Christ through their worship and actions. We 23 can recommend this annual walk as a wonderful day, getting to know an area of London and to share in a Christian community completely different to our own. And of course - to enjoy each other. Thank you to all who have supported this work both financially and by prayer. We raised ÂŁ420 for Unlock. Judy Moorey

BELLRINGERS NEEDED! ‘Love it or hate it there is something evocative about the sound of church bells’ Whether the bells are the quintessential sound generated by a traditional English village church that accompany the sound from the Green of willow on leather; or whether it’s a reminder that, despite everything that’s thrown at it, there is still vibrant life in the beautiful church on the hill and that it is there for everybody to use on special occasions or on a week by week basis ….. or just as a place of retreat from this busy and stressful world. As with so many things in life, we take the sound of the bells for granted, but sometimes we need to put back in some effort to earn the reward. The number of ringers in Wisborough Green will soon be down to 3 with one ringer coming from the Dorking area, when possible. New and younger blood is needed to keep the bells going (65 is not considered old in this context!)

Joel Gage was in Leros 2 years ago when the situation became critical. We help with a specific project for vulnerable Syrian women and children in Athens.  We have a close link with Rachel and Eric Mande and their family in Uganda. GO FOR A PODDLE TO HELP BRING CANAL BACK TO LIFE A walk in beautiful countryside viewing hidden heritage sites is on offer from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. The Trust provides a detailed guide to the route, a free lunch and refreshments including tea and cake along the way. In return for a great day out in the Arun Valley, walkers raise a minimum of £20 each for the Trust in sponsorship. Everyone is welcome to join in the event – known as the Poddle – on Sunday, June 4th. A bonus for community groups is that they can raise money for their good causes through a 50/50 sponsorship option, without having to do any of the organising. Teams of walkers which collect more than £200, a minimum of £20 each, split their proceeds equally with the Trust. The annual Poddle supports the restoration of ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’, a waterway which ran from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. This year, walkers will follow a 12-mile route around the Arun Valley, starting and finishing at Ingfield Manor School at Five Oaks, north of Billingshurst, with lunch at Wisborough Green Scout Hut. The route includes the canal from Loves Bridge, past Rowner Lock – the site of the first volunteer working party on the canal – to Lordings. walkers will be able to see a unique waterwheel and a restored aqueduct. After lunch, the route heads across farmland and past the partially restored Malham Lock then through woodland back to the school. Walk co-ordinator Margaret Darvill said: “We welcome everyone who would like to support the canal restoration through an enjoyable day in the country. Walkers can do half the route, either the morning or the afternoon, if they wish.

Recipe of the Month

GINGER GOLDEN SYRUP LOAF (Courtesy of 'Cake' by Rachel Allen)

I've never been a fan of ginger cake but I recently tried this recipe as I liked the sound of all the golden syrup and pieces of stem ginger in it! The result as imagined was very tasty!

Ingredients    

     

225g (8oz) golden syrup 100g (3.5 oz) butter 100g (3.5 oz) caster sugar 75g (3 oz) stem ginger in syrup (drained), chopped, reserving 3 tablespoons of syrup for the glaze 200 ml (7 fl oz) milk 2 eggs, beaten 225g (8 oz) self-raising flour 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp salt

900g (2 lb) loaf tin

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F), Gas mark 4, then line the base and sides of the loaf tin with baking parchment, with the paper coming above the sides of the tin to enable the cake to be lifted out easily. 2. Place the golden syrup, butter and sugar in a saucepan and stir over a mediumlow heat until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. Set aside and allow to cool, then mix in the stem ginger pieces, milk and eggs. 3. Meanwhile sift the remaining ingredients into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre then pour in the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly. 4. Tip the mixture - which will be quite runny - into the prepared loaf tin and bake in the centre of the oven for 50-60 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. 5. Remove from the oven and drizzle or brush the reserved stem ginger syrup over the loaf while it's still hot. 6. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin then carefully lift the cake out of the tin with the lining paper and place on a wire rack. Peel away the baking parchment and leave to cool down fully.

Update Broadford Bridge Exploratory Drilling Site, Adversane On a wet and windy Sunday Bank Holiday evening, on April 30 th, some 150 people heard calls to object to oil drilling at a farm near Billingshurst. A packed public meeting at Pulborough was standing room only as residents were urged to contact their local MPs and councillors. While UK Oil and Gas (Investments) plc has planning permission for exploratory drilling at Wood Barn Farm, Broadford Bridge, Adversane we argue that permission is no longer fit for purpose. It was Celtique Energie which applied to West Sussex County Council in February 2013 for permission for the Exploratory drill. When permission was given it contained 23 Conditions of which No 3 states: “…..the development be carried out in accordance with the Environmental Statement, ES. The ES proposes only conventional drilling: it is seeking free-flowing hydro-carbons in the Sherwood Sandstone formation. To reach the target formation, the drilling will pass through the Kimmeridge clay (a shale), which is thought likely to contain ‘tight’ hydrocarbons. The graphic on page 9 of chapter 4 in the ES shows that drilling will also pass through various limestone formations: it is these in which ‘acid fracturing’ may be practicable (it does not work in shale). However, there are no [emphasis added] proposals to fracture any of those rocks, either with acid or hydraulically. Failure to develop in accordance with Condition 3 should attract immediate enforcement action, if necessary involving a Stop Notice. Furthermore, the 34 operations described in chapters 4 and 6 of the Environmental Statement can only accommodate conventional drilling.” The new plans are considerably different from the original ones. These have only emerged via information the company has supplied to its Investors and, via an application by the company to the Environment Agency to vary its environmental permit. No information session has been provided by either the company or WSCC and local people are feeling that they have been left in the dark. The company aims to drill a well in the second quarter of this year (April-June). KKWG argues that such major changes are involved that the County should require the company to submit a new planning application including public consultation. In particular, evidence provided by the CPRE points to a fault near the site which could result in the ground shifting if the drill intercepts it (as happened at Preese Hill, Lancashire, when the ground shook in Blackpool). Such a fault could also provide the means for liquids/ chemicals to access public drinking supplies via the River Arun. Some chemicals to be used are carcinogenic, cancer-causing, and two are very toxic to aquatic invertebrates which form part of the internationally important wildlife site on the river, a Special Protection Area. Planning permission for the drill expires 15 th September 2017. UKOG/KOGL did not attend the meeting but supplied literature to the event. A film, the Bentley Effect was shown in the same hall May 12 th. It was accompanied by the Director, Brendan Shoesmith and two Australian residents from the area who were able to come to the UK after their community crowdfunded the project and raised the necessary funds. A small rural community got to grips with the issues raised by Coal Bed Methane, produced witnesses who knew more than the company and, finally, the regional government withdrew the Licence.

The Parishes Wildlife Group Two people who have spoken at village events recently are publishing books about Sussex Species: Butterflies of Sussex: A 21st century Atlas, by Michael Blencowe and Neil Hulme just published by Nature Bureau. Sussex is one of the best areas of the country in which to watch and appreciate our butterflies. This well illustrated work summarises their current distribution and status covering some 53 species. Barbastelle Bat Conservation Handbook, by Ian Davidson-Watts and Matt Zeals, Pelagic books - due October 2017. The Barbastelle Bat Conservation Handbook is a long-awaited guide to barbastelle bat ecology, behaviour, conservation management and threats; the first publication of its kind to draw together all of the scientific research on the barbastelle bat into one comprehensive volume. The most up-to-date methods for surveying the species are explained, accompanied by case studies and practical tips on how to conserve and manage the barbastelle bat's roosting and foraging habitats. Residents in Plaistow reported some excellent wildlife sightings including Greater Crested Newts and, at the end of April, we had a short session led by Mike King on how to put such records into i-Record so that our knowledge is not only on the local Parishes map but up to date. Plans for the rest of the summer include a dragonfly survey along the River Kird, a water condition assessment course to be led by Jeremy Burgess of the South Downs National Park, a bats and moths talk and walk plus a talk on the Tree Charter by Jon Stokes of the Tree Council. Slinfold Open Gardens in aid of St. Catherine's Hospice On Sunday June 4th from 11am - 4pm, five gardens will open in aid of the hospice. Tickets/maps will be on sale, on the day, in the school car park. Jean Griffin from the BBC radio show 'Dig It' will be on hand in one of these gardens to give advice and to answer any gardening questions. There will be teas and unusual plants for sale.

Wisborough Green History - THE ALDERS The Aldershot & District Traction Company operated a bus service from Wisborough Green to Guildford from 1928 until its cessation in 1973. The company was formed in 1914 by a grouping of several smaller companies and operated routes radiating from Aldershot and Guildford to as far away as Haslemere, Hindhead, Alton, Camberley, Egham and Woking and became known colloquially as “Have a Shot and Risk it” and familiarly as the “Tracco”. It continued its independence until being absorbed into the National Bus Company in 1972 when it merged with Thames Valley to become the absurdly contrived name Alder Valley. The Aldershot & District buses were traditionally supplied by Dennis of Guildford until after the Second World War when the single-deckers were mainly supplied by AEC although the double-deckers continued to be supplied by Dennis. The buses wore an attractive three colour livery of dark green lower followed by a cream band and topped 36 by medium green all enhanced by the company’s name in a fancy gold script. See the photo of one of the preserved AEC buses that were the type that used to serve the village. Alder Valley buses wore an overall livery of plum. The buses operated route 49 and operated every two hours or so every day. The prewar journey time was one hour and seven minutes and the fare was 1/9d (or around 9p in today's coinage). The buses used from 1928 were 20 seat Dennis single-deckers. The route started at the Three Crowns and then ran along Newpound Lane to stop at Carters Works in Newpound. It then continued onto Loxwood and the main road to Bramley and Guildford bus station. Bus services were much more integrated then to give a national service, such that the arrival and departures in the village coincided with Southdown buses on routes 61 and 63 that ran from Horsham to Chichester via Petworth and Duncton. This was a reliable connection so that one could travel from, say, Loxwood to Petworth with just a minor wait to change buses en route. Even so, the A&D buses only waited at the Three Crowns for eight minutes leaving little room for delays by either company. Photos of the Guildford bus waiting for the connection are shown on the facing page; the upper photo was taken in 1973 and the postcard view dates from the 1930s (or even a little earlier). The latter picture shows the HOVIS sign outside the bakery and the shop front of A W Knight's butchers. Also, it appears that the bus shelter had not yet been built.

SHOT AND DISTRICT BUS SERVICE (Part 1) The time table started with five buses a day except for Sunday when there were just two that were both in the afternoon. The custom of not usually running buses (or trains) on Sunday mornings was common in the transport industry, the intention being to ensure that staff (and by implication, the general public) could attend church on the morning. The first bus from the village was 8.15am and until the last war, the last bus arrived back at the village at 10.37pm giving enough time for people to have an evening in Guildford.

As the traffic flows were mainly from the village to Guildford in the mornings and returning in the evenings, it made sense for the bus to start its daily journey in Wisborough and to finish there in the evening. Thus the bus was garaged (or outstationed) in the village and in the large wooden-fronted workshop that forms part of Butts Works. The corner of the brick wall into the drive to the garage was rounded off so that the larger buses could gain access to the garage. In order to get access to the drive, buses had to make a wide turn to gain access to the garage, so when the road to the pavilion was surfaced in the 1960s, the wide arc was surfaced too, even though the outstation ceased being used in 1946. During the war, the service went down to just two buses per day, the last returning to the village at 6.46 pm with none on Sundays. They were operated by 32 seat Dennis Lancets. The route changed during the war as the A281 Guildford to Horsham road was diverted to go north of the newly constructed Dunsfold aerodrome, a situation that remains to this day.  Plant out annual summer bedding plants in borders,

containers and hanging baskets now the risk of frost has passed.

 Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells

once the leaves start to yellow.

 Pinch out the tips of your fuchsias to encourage a bushy habit and

 Cut back bulb foliage once it has died down naturally.  Plant out tender vegetables like courgette, squash, tomatoes and

sweetcorn now the chance of frost has past.

The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF (ÂŁ5 per year) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club Just one match to report, we entertained Pulborough in a friendly match on Wednesday evening 10th May with Wisborough running out winners in a close fought match by 12 shots. Next Market: Thursday 8th June 2017 Wisborough Green Village Hall 8.45am – 12.30pm I am sitting here enjoying toast made from delicious sourdough bread, with cheese and tomatoes I bought at the village market this Thursday. I am up against my deadline (sorry Roland!) and mulling over what to write this month, and it occurs to me to just be honest... As I went about my market business on Thursday, I chatted with the stallholders as I bought from them, enquiring how their businesses were doing, asking how their various grandchildren, house moves and health issues were. They all remarked on how quiet it was at the market that day. Cathy, of the wonderful Sussex Roses said she wasn’t surprised, she always noticed a downturn in sales when a General Election was announced. It was something she had observed over many, many years in business. We of course saw familiar faces, who come along every month to support the market and stock up with their favourite staples but the footfall of the market was down this month. Volunteers, committee members and stallholders were puzzled….it hadn’t rained, it was May, traditionally a good month. We left with no answers and feeling a little concerned for the market’s future. Later that evening my shopping delivery arrived from a well known supermarket (because let’s face it the market doesn’t stock washing powder and toilet roll!). The delivery driver was a lovely young man, who apologised for dropping my three boxes of 45 eggs, and we had a bit of banter whilst we scraped them off the front step. As I load my shopping into the fridge I realise how devoid this experience is of connection. I am not naive enough to think I could ever get back to the days of weekly shopping from the local market and subsisting on my own vegetable patch, but my own life would be a little less rich without my trip to the village market, where I get to know the provenance of what I’m buying and chat with the person whose livelihood I’m helping to support, rather than a faceless corporation. Our next market is on General Election Day - Thursday 8th June. We are holding the market alongside the polling station in the Vine Room at the Village Hall. We do hope this will encourage lots of you to vote and then pop in and see us for a shop. Don’t forget the Macmillan coffee stall are on hand for tea, coffee, cake and a sit-down! We Value your support and custom. Without you the market would not exist!! The market is run entirely by volunteers and we are always on the look-out for helpers. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Horticultural Show Sunday 18th June Village Hall 2.00 pm -5.00 pm Thank you to all who contributed to the very successful May Plant Sale, to Sally for providing the venue and washing up facilities, the tea and cakes team, the generous plant growers and the sales and advice team.

Punters and the committee of the Horticultural Society eagerly awaiting the plant sale on the little green. The weather was good and sales were brisk.

Please get entry forms into the WGHS box outside Forge Cottage, by the loos, by Friday 16th June. Classes range from; a handprint picture for under 7’s; a wildlife photo from your garden space; a box of homemade sweets for under 16’s; open to all banana cake from given recipe; floral arrangements of twigs and twine or summertime and for MEN ONLY – recycled. Do have a go! There are many classes to choose from in the horticultural sections. New gardeners and newcomers to the village area are invited to join the fun. You do not need to be a member of the WG Hort. Soc. These very same people are also invited to join our annual trip out. This time to the joys of Wakehurst (Kew in the Country). Outing to Wakehurst Place and the Seed Bank of world fame is on Wednesday 14th June. To book a place ring Kate Steele on 01798 813357. Wakehurst is part of Kew Gardens as well as National Trust. The old house has a lovely frontage and also can be visited most times. At the back there is the self service eatery and garden shop. The entry area has a cafe and a very smart, well stocked shop. The truly wonderful Seed Bank can be seen in a new construction that keeps out the rain. The visual displays are truly mind boggling in content and form. You can look inside the laboratories and see the various processes for preservation of the seeds taking place and begin to appreciate the reasons for them in detail. (Continued on page 49)

WI Report On the 4th May the WI met at the Sports Pavilion for their meeting. This was because of the voting for Council elections and we were unable to be in the village hall. This meeting was to discuss and vote on the two resolutions that were going to be put to the NFWI Annual Meeting in June at the Liverpool Echo Arena. They are:ď&#x201A;ˇ This meeting calls on every WI and the NFWI to work alongside health and social care providers and their local community to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness, thus ensuring better identification of lonely people in order to be able to offer them the appropriate assistance and support. ď&#x201A;ˇ Microplastic fibres are shed from synthetic clothing with every wash and are the main contributors to microplastic contamination of the oceans. The NFWI calls on Government and industry to research and develop innovative solutions to this problem in order to stop the accumulation of microplastic fibres in our oceans. The members voted FOR the first resolution, giving our delegate a discretionary vote if necessary and they voted unanimously for the second resolution with no discretionary vote. After our discussion, Judith Dandy from Dandelion Farewells, our local undertaker, gave a short talk about herself and her business as part of Dying Matters National 49 Awareness Week. She certainly gave us something to think about!! Our next meeting be on June 1st will be back in the Village Hall and will be an historical one. Sarah Raven says this amazing plant, though not a looker, kills perennial weeds like ground elder and couch grass. It will still be for sale at the June Show. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for April was 8mm – (last year 57mm - 9 yr average 50mm). An exceptionally dry April though the north-west Highlands recorded 200mm for the month. We do need rain and the water companies are beginning to get concerned, prompting fears of a drought. Temperatures were not far from average but this disguises the earlier warmth and later coldness. Art Trail Exhibition As part of the July Horsham Arts Festival, Horsham Artists Open Studios group is staging an Art Trail Exhibition over the week-ends 8th/9th and 15th/16th July. With an especially designed map of the local area, you will be able to plan your visits to the studios and exhibition venues where you will be able to talk with the artists and makers about their choice of materials and the different ways in which they approach their work. The map will also provide you with full details about the availability of parking, refreshments, access arrangements and toilets. You will also find a list of artists and makers with an accompanying thumbnail image of their work so you will be able to plan your route.
