Pastoral Letter So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. Matthew 27:66 Do you enjoy ‘whodunits’? That style of writing typified by great authors like Agatha Christie, who create a plot and pour into the mix a variety of characters and situations, stirring thoroughly, until served up with some conclusions and outcomes you would never have guessed! The Gospel writers also convey an amazing narrative of an event about a carpenter from Nazareth who, at the age of thirty began teaching and preaching about the Kingdom of God to a people who already thought they knew it all! The outcome of this life-story was one destined to change the world itself, a most unlikely conclusion. No one expected the intervention of God and His salvation plan for all on this planet. Many of these writers and Biblical authors have now had their books made into films or a TV series. Some critics say that they lose something, others say that the medium of film conveys, or creates, another avenue to explore. One such film, fresh to our cinemas is ‘Risen’. It is about a Roman Officer named Clavius, whose role is to ‘Police’ Jerusalem and Judea, silencing any anti Roman demonstrations or possible unrest. His task in the film is to track down the corpse of ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ and prove to both the Jewish authorities and the Roman Governor that Jesus is dead, which Clavius knows, as he was present at the crucifixion. Joseph Fiennes leads the cast as Clavius, a battle hardened Roman soldier who believes in many Pagan gods and has no time for Jewish beliefs. However, this tough man, through whose eyes we examine the Biblical evidence for the resurrection, uncovers more than he expected. So in this Easter season, why not take a trip to the cinema to see a brilliant film from an unusual angle, that makes even the most sceptical doubters examine the evidence to ‘who moved the stone?’ Clive and Marion

A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

From the Editor Welcome to the April 2016 edition of Ad Vincula. You may have noticed that your magazine is a little fatter this month! Due to the continued demand for advertising space, we have decided to increase the number of pages. This also means I need to make sure I can fill the extra space with interesting articles and features so, if you have anything to say that you think might interest others, please do send it to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. In addition to the usual articles this month, we have an obituary for June Clark (below), notification of a talk by Jamie on his epic walk last year (p17), an opportunity to try your hand at ringing the bells of St Peter’s (p21), the welcome return of the Sports Page (p22) with news of a brand new Fun Run (p19), notice of the Annual Parish Meeting (p26) and a report of the Roger Moorey Memorial Concert (p35). This month’s cover photo was submitted by Ruby Jerges (age 11). Please do keep sending me your photos as I will need a photo to suit every month of the year. Best Wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

In memory of June Clark (1935 – 2016) June very sadly passed away on January 12th leaving her beloved husband Eric, children – Marion, Shelley and Leon and 8 grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends and colleagues. She was born in Sidcup in Kent in 1935 and moved around a lot during the war because her father was in the air-force. After the war she moved to Hastings while her father was training for the ministry. His first job was as priest in charge at Seaford. When she was 13 she went to St Brandons, clergy daughter’s school in Clevedon, Somerset and finished off her school life at Horsham High School during the time her father was the Rector at Rusper. She qualified as a nurse but changed profession after an injury and moved on to train in Horticulture at Merrist Wood. This love of Horticulture became one of the main passions in her life. She immersed herself in village life at Wisborough Green and became an integral part of the community. She was a member of many different clubs and committees in the village during her life. One of the positions she held that was most dear to her was that of Guider to her troop of girl guides. This involvement with the guiding movement continued as she increased in age with her close association with The Trefoil Guild. She moved to Billingshurst a year ago and fully immersed herself in life there having more time to pursue all her hobbies and keep in touch with her friends locally. She felt blessed to live in such a beautiful village as Wisborough Green for so much of her life, surrounded by people she loved. She was a very well respected and admired lady and will be sorely missed. 9

Wisborough Green Primary School News There has been so much happening over the past few weeks that I don't know where to begin. Let's start at the beginning, a very good place to start! Week 1 - we welcomed so many parents in to school to 'Stay and Play' with our new Numicon resources. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their learning with all the adults and it was amazing to see them confidently talking about their maths learning. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend. The children in year 5 and 6 escaped to the beautiful countryside to take a walk along the canal. It supported their geography learning as part of their topic 'Stranded'. After walking nearly 15 km they were treated to some hot, home made chips which were really appreciated. A fun time was had by all. Week 2 - there is not normally anything that can outshine World Book Day but this year was definitely an exception. After many fundraising events the PTA were able to support our library development project and had the funds to buy the most amazing bookshelves and seating. It truly has transformed this area in school and we are looking forward to the grand opening after the Easter break. If you would like to help with reading or to share stories in our new library then we would love to see you. Please contact the school or pop in and see us. Week 3 - our travel committee met for a second time to discuss strategies to improve the parking and traffic around the school at both ends of the school day. Our 'Stop and Drop' system at the front of the school is helping to alleviate some of the problems and we hope to bring you news of more initiatives very soon. Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Well it certainly wasn't the children in year 3 and 4! They braved the cold weather to go in to the wilderness to learn about the life of wolves. All involved had a great day and are now wolf experts with a love for these creatures. I was so pleased to welcome so many parents and carers to my first parent forum on homework. It was a good opportunity for me to listen to the positive aspects and the challenges too. I really valued being able spend this time listening to the different views and these will support us going forward to develop our school policy. Week 4 - the science fair really did kick off with a bang! Rocket launching, lava lamps, exploding potions and colour changing flowers were only a few of the experiments set up. All the children had an opportunity to work scientifically with experiments planned by our older children. We are looking forward to our Science Wizard workshops later in the week as part of Science Week. There really is no doubt that WGPS is a fun place to learn for the whole school community. As we look ahead to the spring term we have some very exciting growing projects planned. The Horticultural Society have kindly donated ÂŁ100 and some strawberry plants to launch the project and our green fingers are ready to learn! As always we welcome support in school from our local community and if you would like to go a step further then maybe the role of a school governor is for you. If so then please see the details below. (Continued on page 13)

Nature Notes This month’s Notes have kindly been provided by Peter Edmonds due to Sue Jameson’s heavy work commitments currently. Ed Recently, Hilary and I took our two eldest great-grandchildren for an outing. It was a beautiful, crisp, winter day as we drove down to Worthing for fish and chips at our favourite fish restaurant. After a splendid meal we set out for Brighton and the day’s main event. I wrote last month about a flock of Blacktailed Godwits in amazing flight display at Pulborough Brooks. We wanted to show the children the Starlings murmuring around Brighton Pier. This is a spectacular show that happens pretty well every day during late autumn and all winter. As the sun begins to sink below the horizon, hundreds and then thousands of Starling arrive in separate flocks from their inland feed grounds. Minute by minute they join together and perform their amazing aerial display. The patterns they make in the sky are mesmerising and ever changing as the darkness creeps in from the east. Sometimes they pass over the pier, close to, and you can hear the murmur of their wings that describes the collective noun for Starlings – murmuration. Surprisingly, there are no calling sounds and, although they fly close together and turn as one, there are no collisions. And then, suddenly, the show is over when, as if as one, they settle to roost below the decking of the pier. You can hear them telling each other “what a good show we put on this evening” and then “no more talking chaps – it’s lights out!” and all is silent once more. Little is known about the reason for this behaviour. Various studies have been inconclusive – I guess we will never know the full truth behind one of nature’s most spectacular displays. By the time you read this, the season will be over, but it is worth making a note in your diary for a trip to Brighton Pier next November. But…. A new season is beginning. Butterflies, particularly Peacock, Brimstone and Orange Tip will be appearing in our gardens. The majority of migratory birds will have gone and come, depending on the breeding area preferences, and we can listen out for Cuckoos, Nightingales and warblers of many species. Later during late April and early May they will be joined by Spotted Flycatchers, Nightjars and Swifts, those most Peacock Butterfly exciting of birds, together with the first fledgling Blackbirds, Thrushes and Tits. A visit to Chichester Cathedral and the RSPB tent in the garden, to see the Peregrine Falcons is certainly a good idea. And then, if that wasn’t enough, there are carpets of bluebells to marvel at – enjoy! Peter E 15

ARE YOU CURIOUS ABOUT BELLS? TH

On Saturday 9 APRIL there will be an opportunity at 11 am to come and try your hand at ringing one of these. As part of the celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversary of the first peal rung on the bells at St Mary’s Horsham, the bell tower at Wisborough Green will be open between 10 and 11 am for ringers on their way to join in with the celebrations in Horsham to ring the bells. Why not come and watch the ‘experts’ and once they have departed there will be a quiet opportunity at 11am to ‘have a go’ under the guidance of our own ringers. Many people who might be interested in trying this very satisfying pastime may be put off by the thought that they have to come to church every Sunday. It is worth saying that there is no compulsion to stay for the service and, in fact at Wisborough Green there are several ringers who are unable to give this commitment, but are made very welcome as ringers. If you would like to find out more, come to the church between 10 and 11.30 am on Saturday 9th April and you will have the opportunity to satisfy your curiosity and be able to ask all the questions you can think of. Link To Hope Charity Trek, Romania, Moldova. On the 11th June, I will be trekking in the eastern Carpathian mountains to raise money for ‘Link to Hope’. 5 days of ascent and descent. Equivalent apparently of walking up and down Snowdon each day! I need to raise £1500. I will be paying for the cost of the trip myself, so all money raised will go to this charity’s projects, which amongst other things, send the shoeboxes you fill each Christmas. Please support me and the work of this charity in these most underprivileged areas, and the people who live there. If you would like to sponsor me the easiest way is through my Justgiving page. www.justgiving.com/chris-mosley Thanking you in anticipation of your support Chris Mosley 21

Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club. 1st XI this season is playing in the West Sussex league Championship (the old 1st Division) they are currently sitting 5th with a couple of games in hand on the 2 teams above them so they could finish 3rd or 4th which is very good in a promotion year. Goals seem to be coming from everybody which is good. Last week I watched them being knocked out of a cup game 3-5 after extra time to Lavant who are a league above them having missed 2 penalties and conceding 1 penalty in the last few minutes of the game. So things could have been oh so different if Dave and Perry could shoot straight between the big white posts. 2nd XI play in Division 4 North and are having an average season sitting mid table but having struggled to play many home games they have ended up struggling since Christmas to hit top form. Cricket Club. Cricket will start very soon on the green with the initial colts training and signing on planned for Friday evening the 8th April. Both teams have been relegated back into the West Sussex Invitation League this year; the 1st XI will be playing in the 1st Division and the 2nd XI will be in the 6th Division which will still be a challenge for both teams as I am sure the standard has improved since we were promoted 4 years ago. New practise nets should have been installed at the bottom of the green replacing the dangerous old net. Hopefully these will enable serious batting practise for the 150 colts and 50 senior players. New players young and old are always welcome just pop along to a training session and introduce yourself, we have an overseas player again this season. Alam will be coaching and helping with the square preparation as the previous overseas players have so please introduce yourselves to him when you see him around. We are starting the season with a club social on the 2nd April at the Cricketers from about 7.30pm please come along and have a few beers and a catch up. Touchy Rugby. A fund raising fun run has been organised for the 8th May 2016 starting on the village green at 10.30 am (see poster on p19). Please come and join in on the day there are going to be various attractions on the green including some very tired “Touchy Rugby players all looking exhausted as I am sure they will be. Options to run either 5k or 10k are available and all are welcome. Sports Association. Plans are in the process of being approved for a replacement sports pavilion. It is early days but any help with fund raising would be appreciated. Please contact a member of the sports association committee if you are able to help. Disclaimer - This is not an official page by the WGSCA or any of the clubs. It is just an attempt to try and keep villagers informed of what is happening on the green in the past and present month. Wisborough Green Sports News (Cont.) Wisborough Green Women's Stoolball Team. Looking round the table at the AGM the other week I realised that I had been playing stoolball for the village for nearly 20 years, some of the team even longer. We have got older, some of us have had children and these children have played for the team, however they are now getting to an age where they are leaving for Universities or studying for exams. Can you see where I am going with this? We need new players!!!!!! Did you enjoy rounders at school? Do you like to get out in the evening and play sport? Maybe you are exactly what we need! The league we play in has matches on a Monday and Wednesday and play starts at 6.45pm. We play from Kingsfold to Clymping, Angmering to Loxwood and anywhere in between. We have two practice evenings on the Green coming up, weather permitting: 6 th April and the 13th April at 6.30pm with our first game being on 20th April. Please get in touch if you would like more information (call Alison on 01403 700725), otherwise we would love to see you on the Green. Clare Steere

Minibus Theatre Trip

Saturday 16th April (4.00pm matinee performance) at The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford We shall be taking the Minibus to this performance of ‘Quartermaine’s Terms’ by Simon Gray Set in the 1960’s, Simon Gray’s quintessentially British drama is a sparklingly witty but ultimately moving account of several years in the lives of seven teachers at a small school in Cambridge which teaches English to foreigners. Never has the celebrated author been more amusing and more touching than in this thoroughly delightful portrait of a mediocre but lovable English schoolteacher St. John Quartermaine and his fellow faculty members. ‘….though the jokes are excellent, the piece cuts deep.’ (Daily Telegraph) Directed by: David Hemsley-Brown with: Caroline Dooley, Paul Halliwell, Polly King, Nick Lund, Richard Parish, Derek Watts and David Webb Tickets for the performance are £15.00 and the Minibus fare will be £5.00 Please ring: RICHARD PARISH (01403 700628) as soon as possible to book both your ticket and your seat on the bus 25

Recipe of the Month Warm Aubergine Salad After all the chocolate and hot cross buns of Easter this month's recipe is a healthier, but delicious warm vegetarian salad. It's a pretty filling dish, but if you're feeling particularly hungry, then serve it with some brown rice or quinoa drizzled with lemon juice or crusty bread. Serves 4 Ingredients         

2 medium aubergines Olive oil 1 tablespoon dried mixed herbs 2 X 500g bags of spinach 4 tablespoons tahini Juice of one lemon 360g sun-dried tomatoes 100g pine nuts Salt and pepper

Oven 200°C 180°C fan Method 1. Slice the aubergines into thin strips about 7.5 mm thick and place on a baking tray with a generous amount of olive oil, dried herbs, salt and pepper. Bake for 20mins. 2. About 5mins before the aubergines are ready, place the spinach into a large pan with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and allow to wilt. When wilted add the tahini, lemon juice and sun-dried tomatoes. 3. In a separate pan toast the pine nuts for a minute or two, being careful not to burn them. 4. Add the aubergines and pine nuts to the spinach pan and mix well before serving. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM The workhouse ceased to be used as such during the First World War and so became empty for the first time for two hundred years. Workhouses were not generally abolished until 1930 with the powers and responsibilities being passed to the local councils, the Poor Law system being finally abolished in 1947. In order to find a use for the building the parish council had a meeting in 1920 although the Women's Institute started using the first floor of the south wing as the venue for their weekly meetings in around late 1918. At the parish council meeting of 20th February 1920 the council decided to let the workhouse as four flats, a school canteen, rooms in which the Local Education Authority could run cooking and woodwork classes and the letting of the first and second floors of the south wing to the WI and the Girl Guides for their weekly meetings. The four flats were converted from workhouse accommodation and were equipped with a living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen. At least one of the conversions was done very promptly such that the first tenant, John Cheesman, took up residence just three months later. Another early tenant was James (Robert?) Strudwick seen here (right). The flats were collectively known as Almshouse Cottages and were located (together with their final tenants) as follows:  Flat 1 (also called Pond Cottage) was in the space from the Vine Room (and its since demolished extension) up to the pump room where a pump drew the water for the workhouse and flats (and which was located where the covered plate opposite the present main entrance is located). The internal layout was changed such that the present toilets, etc didn't exist then. The final tenants were Reg and Lorna Cheesman who lived there with Laurie, Reg (junior) and daughter Pat.  Flat 2 was on the first floor of the present village hall and was previously a dormitory. It was accessed by the current fire escape door on the north wall of the hall. A flight of stairs inside led up to the flat. The outside iron staircase on the south wall that gave access to the flat was probably a fire escape. This flat was let to Jessie Clark and his wife.  Flat 3 consisted of the ground floor of the eastern part of the extension and was let (Continued on page 31)

30

POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 11 (Continued from page 30)

to Ron Cheesman. It included the committee room (then the flat's sitting room), bar area and the now demolished keeper’s cottage (see the December issue). The entrance to the flat was the front door to the cottage, i.e. where the maisonette's garden gate is situated.  Flat 4 was located on the ground floor of the south wing. An outside door roughly in the postion of the present bar area led into a hallway where a short flight of steps on the right led up to the flat's front door. A further door on the right led down a flight of steps to the cellar whilst opposite was a back door to Flat 3. The flat itself had a kitchen extension on the east side. The flat was let to Len Cooper and his wife who had four sons (including Bernie) and a daughter Ruby. The tenants of Flats 3 and 4 had access to the cellar where they stored coal, wood and vegetables. The attached photo courtesy of Jean Cheesman and taken in 1937 shows a young Laurie Cheesman on his bicycle just outside his flat which was just to the left of the picture. It also shows the path from the rear access to the flats and the area that is now the car park that was a garden, play area and a yard for the hanging of washing. Flat 4 is directly behind. In 1950, Petworth Rural Council served notice under the 1936 Housing Act that the inhabited portions no longer complied with the requirements of the Act. The parish council decided to accept a closing order on the four flats. The last tenants moved out to new homes in the newly built Butts Meadow estate in 1952. Flats 1 to 3 were gutted after being vacated in readiness for the conversion to the present village hall, whilst Flat 4 was demolished as part of the south wing. The first six courses of Flat 4's eastern wall can still be seen and is all that remains of the south wing. It forms the boundary between the car park and the maisonette's garden. The extension of the Vine Room (one of Flat 1's bedrooms) was also demolished at this time. Some of these details are now within older villagers' memories and I am grateful for their assistance in writing these articles. Continued with details of the school canteen, etc. next month. Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice 116 sheep killed in UK's worst ever sheep attack near Chichester More than one hundred sheep have died in the UK's worst sheep attack in living memory in West Dean, near Chichester. The horrific discovery was made by farmer Gordon Wyeth at the West Dean Estate early on Monday afternoon (March 7). The sheep, many of them pregnant, had been herded into a tight group against a fence and gate bordering woodland where they had panicked and had either died from shock or by being crushed in the flock. A total of 116 sheep, worth about ÂŁ17,000, died in the field just north of the A286, near the old railway bridge at the eastern end of the village. Sergeant Tom Carter from Sussex Police said: "I have never seen or heard of sheepworrying on this scale before and this was a terrible sight. While there are no signs of any of the animals being savaged, we are all but 100 per cent certain that their deaths were brought about by dogs. "The flock was last checked around lunchtime on Sunday, so the incident could have occurred at any time over the next 24 hours. However, if as we suspect it was a dog attack, it may well have happened in daylight and we want to hear from anyone with information about it. "This is not just about the Mr Wyeth's livelihood - and it will cost him at least another ÂŁ2000 to dispose of the carcasses - but also his emotional attachment to the animals that he has raised and nurtured." James Osman, the National Farmers' Union adviser for Sussex, said: "This is the worst incident of its kind in living memory and talking to colleagues around the country, the number of deaths is double what we have come across in the past. "We are in full support of the police's efforts to discover whose dog or dogs were responsible and urge anyone with information to get in touch with them." Sgt Carter continued: "We have seen a rise in sheep-worrying incidents and as Spring approaches more dog owners will be heading for the countryside to exercise their pets. We urge people to keep their dogs on a lead while they are walking in rural areas and around livestock. So often in these incidents the owners are horrified by what their dogs have done, but they have to accept that even the most docile of pets can quickly turn into a killer given the opportunity." "A farmer can legally shoot a dog that is chasing livestock and seek compensation from the person responsible for the animal, so please don't take the risk." Anyone with information about the incident is asked 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 862 of 07/03.

ROGER MOOREY MEMORIAL CONCERT 2016 On Saturday 12th March, St Peter’s was, once again, packed with people who came for the second Roger Moorey Memorial Concert. and the audience was treated to a wonderful evening of entertainment. The concert was organised by Judy with help from family and friends and, I’m sure, Roger would have loved it and would have been very proud of his very talented family who all took part in the evening. The evening was compéred by Pete Moorey (Roger’s son) and others taking part included family members, various friends, the Glee Singers, Malcolm Brinson, St Peter’s Choir, St Peter’s Music Group and River Boat Shuffle – the latter two being groups that Roger used to play with. It was a varied programme with something for everybody and the interval, with wine and nibbles, provided an opportunity for convivial conversation. Judy would like to thank everyone who came, the wonderful performers and those behind the scenes. She also thanks everyone for their terrific donations - £920 at the last count. She hopes to give at least £500 to church and £500 to FSW. I would like to add my thanks to Judy, her family and all the talented performers who took part in the concert. It was a superb occasion. This was the second concert given to celebrate the life of Roger Moorey and, although Judy vowed “never again!”, I hope that there will be another concert sometime in the future. Roland Zilz

Time for God - Preparation for Palm Sunday Time for God is a service on the second Sunday morning of each month to engage with those who are not used to the traditional forms of worship that we offer here at St. Peter’s. It is hoped that this service will expand and develop so that all ages will enjoy exploring the joy of what it means to be a Christian. This month we explored the events of Palm Sunday. Paper palm leaves, palm crosses, a peg legged donkey and a frieze depicting the road strewn with coats and palm branches for Jesus. These were used to participate in the talk, where the crowds sang ‘Hosanna in the highest’ as the donkey ‘clip clopped’ along bringing Jesus into Jerusalem. Time for God on Sunday 10th April will continue the celebration of Easter with more activities and exploration for all ages! Clive & Marion

Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 14th April 2016 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm “Annie has been a lifelong visitor to this Market, apart from one month.” said her Mother as they were sitting having a coffee and carrot cake at the last Market. Quite a surprise. Annie is a toddler who then amused herself by practising going up and down the steps all by herself. Not one tumble. It makes a pleasant break from the morning rush and a treat for the little one. At one point much later several comments were passed at the amount of laughter billowing from people sitting at the refreshments table in the hall itself – “..it sounds like a party”. What about having coffee here and see who else is around? What the Market needs urgently is for people to help with setting up of tables before the Market starts or help to put them away after it finishes. The folding tables just need moving and legs pulled out by one or a pair of people. You do not need to be a Samson! The team that is doing this already do it on either a regular basis or on specific dates. They need extras to cover holidays, appointments and emergencies. Lots of camaraderie and quips make it a pleasant exercise! If you could possibly help, please ring Mary - 01403 700624. Further occasional help with the refreshments for Macmillan would be welcome too we split the morning into two duties to keep things light, though the Macmillan person keeps going all the time! We are known as a friendly community oriented Market. The more help the better. Thank you for thinking about this. The Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market Committee

Annual Unlock Walk - 23rd April 2016 Every year a group of Parishioners from Wisborough Green joins this annual walk visiting a variety of churches in London. The aim of the walk is to raise money for Unlock’s work in deprived urban areas across the UK and to raise awareness of the issues that Unlock exists to address. This year’s walk, called “Around the Orbit” will take place on Saturday 23rd April between 9am and 5pm and the 8 mile route encompasses the Olympic Park in Stratford and Hackney. It is a very enjoyable and rewarding day out and, although 8 miles may sound daunting, the walk is conducted at a relatively leisurely pace and we usually find a pleasant park or bit of green to have a picnic en-route. You can get involved by either joining us on the walk or by sponsoring those walking (or both!). If you can join us do let Judy know on 01403 700700. Please, please sponsor and pray for our UNLOCK walk in London. Judy Moorey 41

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday, 4th April 2016 - 8pm Village Hall Talk “Singing the Blues” by Simon White 14 blue flowers out of 38 flowers were to be identified on the Quiz at the AGM. Perhaps we should have had this talk before the AGM to enable everyone to ID them. Which other ones will our speaker draw to our attention. Hopefully he will give cultivation tips to help us shine with our blues at the Spring and August Shows. Peter is the Beales' roses expert and a most knowledgeable plantsman and gardener as those of you that came, back in 2013, found out when he spoke about roses. No surprises at the AGM, where it was great to have such a good turn-out. So is it the fun Quiz and the wine they come for? In May, on Saturday 7th, 2 pm, the Spring Plant Sale will be on the little Green with the Millennium sundial. The sun has started shining so put on your boots, wellies or clogs and see what you could spare. Please look out for spare plants, possibly ones you had divided earlier. You may be sowing, so some extra to sell here would be great. It is a good time to clear out what did not suit your garden, but might well be just the thing for a different setting. Any hardware no longer needed could be brought here as well. Info on when and where to leave will be in next month's article. This is a big fund raiser as well as being a money saver for those who come to buy, plus it's VERY sociable with refreshments to boot. Reminders: In June, on Tuesday 14th our outing to Polesden Lacey is due to take place. Please ring Kate 01798 813357 or Philip 01403 700402 to book your seats. Not a long journey there this time. In June, on Sunday 19th we have our Horticultural Show, so bear in mind what does well with you and give it extra love and attention! The Table Top competition. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the June Show. The Committee look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible at the next meeting and talk. We are very appreciative of the turn out at the AGM. Collectively the WGH Society have a massive store of knowledge that we share with pleasure, so welcome to new comers. Aija Hamilton 43

WI Report Ben Cross from Crosslands Flower Nursery came to our March 3 rd meeting and gave a very passionate talk about his family business of growing alstroemeria. His Grandfather started the nursery in 1957 at Walberton and he has followed on from his Father. He described the growing of the alstroemeria from small plants into the cut flowers that he sells to florists and farm shops countywide. He also told us of the difficulties that English flower growers have in this country when nearly 97½ % of all flowers sold come in from abroad. Our next meeting on the 7th April will be a talk on ‘What’s in the Basket ’meeting by Jan Thompson, I leave you to guess what this is about! The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladiolus

into beds, borders and containers.

 Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Pot them up

and bring them along to the May plant sale.

 Divide primroses after they have flowered.  Deadhead daffodils and tulips as the flowers finish but leave the

foliage intact allowing it to die back naturally.

 Plant your chitted potatoes outside in the ground or in potato grow

bags, but remember to keep well covered if there is a chance of frost.

 Protect your fruit blossom from late frosts by covering them with

fleece on cold nights.

 Plant out strawberry beds, making sure you enrich the soil first with

plenty of well-rotted manure. Place cloches over your strawberry plants for earlier crops.

 Keep an eye on your seedlings - as soon as they have their first true

leaves, prick them out into pots or modules for growing on.

 If you haven't already, give your greenhouse a thorough scrub with

hot soapy water to get rid of pests and diseases and to let more light in. I actually spray mine with household bleach solution which seems to kill off everything .

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the March draw is Robert Armistead who wins £75.00 The winner of the second prize of £20 is Joan Goodchild The April draw will be at the Three Crowns at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 6 April 2016 and if any member or prospective member would like to attend they will be very welcome. Weather Watch Still no snow......it can happen in April. Wisborough Green Rainfall for February was 50mm (69mm last year –my 8 yr average is 76mm). Coldest month of the winter so far which has slowed what was looking like a very early Spring. Lowest temp was -14.0°C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire and the highest was 16°C at Exeter Airport in Devon. An average month for sunshine in February. Weathervane

CYBER TIPS The Voice You sit in front of your computer screen, and the screen goes blank. No matter what you do you can’t get the darn thing to work. Impatience and frustration at first gives way to a gripping fear, you swallow hard, and as you reach for the telephone it rings. A friendly voice at the other end informs you that your computer is in trouble. The smooth, soothing Voice continues confidently and reassures you that all is not lost. Then, as if by magic, the image appears on your screen again, just where you left off. And, of course, you exclaim, The Voice asks you what has happened, you tell The Voice and it has you in its grip. Next a small window appears in the middle of the screen and The Voice continues to question what you can see. “Oh yes” purrs The Voice, “I’ve seen that before!” The Voice continues, gaining your confidence. “All you have to do is enter the hash where the cursor is flashing.” You do just that and Bingo! everything seems fine. The little window has disappeared and The Voice tells you that all is well. You exclaim your thanks and relief and the phone goes dead. And that’s when you begin to find out that you have been compromised and The Voice has all your private details and can do what it likes with them! I’ve invented this scenario but it is similar to two cases I have heard of recently. We are not in total control of our computers and our every Internet search or enquiry is logged somewhere. You will know this when, following an enquiry about a particular item, one pop-up after another, advertises similar goods. If genuine businesses can do this so can rogues.

Just remember that no ligitimate agency is going to ring you and tell you your computer is in trouble! And act accordingly by putting the phone down! ! Peter Edmonds
