or those of you who haven’t melted, welcome to the July issue. June indeed proved to be a very busy month, so much so that I have had to increase this month’s issue by four pages to try and fit everything in! My thanks to Photographer Ian, yet again, for managing to capture everything on his list and more! Remember that the photos included are generally only a small selection of those actually taken and that the complete albums are on Ian’s facebook page Bluwater-WebDesign-Photography. While you are there, press LIKE, then every time Ian up-dates his albums it will appear on your news feed. Also in this month’s issue, I have a new quiz master for your general trivia quiz and I’ve up-dated the bus timetable as per the latest information from the Tourist Office. Congratulations to Shea of Bar Restaurant La Parata. Not only did he raise 1,000€ for Asprodalba this month at his Jubilee party, he then went on to raise over 1,700€ for Help for Heroes at his charity day as well as having his tash and hair shaved off for the second year running in aid of

the charity. Congratulations also to Siobhan and Alan for organising the Music Fest held at Hostal Rural which raised a whopping 3,593€ for PAWS. Well done to everyone who donated their time and money to support these events. Please note I am making a small change to the deadline date for each issue in order to incorporate up-todate photos and news of the preceding month’s events which, in turn may affect the distribution date for some issues The deadline is now around the 20th of the month and distribution will be in the first week of the month as opposed to around the 1st of it. Do send in any information about your events if you would like Ian to go along and take a few photos or alternatively, send in your own photos and I will do my best to include them. Until August, keep cool! Tracey

Please see the personal message from Jack and Carol on page 19. Please be on your guard … On 25th June at 6.15pm Jennifer of Polansky and Associates was mugged outside the entrance to the Cave Bar on Mojácar playa. The details gathered after talking to Jim, of the Cave and Mark Sinclair, who was helping and who found Jennifer’s bag, are that when Jim arrived to open up the bar at 6pm he noticed two young lads sitting on the wide, low wall between the Cave and the Cowboy Cocina. A little after he had opened up one of the lads came into the bar, looked around and went out without buying anything. At 6.15pm Jennifer, as was her habit, approached the entrance to the Cave where she was attacked in broad daylight and her handbag snatched, suffering head and arm damage. The muggers made off and the police were called, who made a few enquiries but came up with nothing. So, Mark Sinclair decided to search for the bag himself, and following an obvious escape route went up the road past Torre Bahia restaurant to some waste ground near the vehicle entrance into the Guardia Vieja compound, where he found Jennifer's bag, minus her cash and credit cards. Mark's theory, worth considering, is that the culprits have been staying in the Guardia Vieja apartments, have noticed Jennifer's regular pattern, and decided to waylay her near the entrance to the Los Arcos laundry. Then, having got the cash and cards, they could easily nip back into the Guardia Vieja compound and "disappear". Ric Polansky attended to stopping her cards, but thieves can acquire a lot before the card is blocked. Jennifer has since been discharged from hospital and is now staying with the Polanskys, as she recovers from her ordeal. It was thanks to Kenny, of Cowboy Cocina, who immediately put the incident up on Facebook, that Mark Sinclair found out about it and rushed down to the Cave to help. This is true "local spirit". Long may it last!! The Fundraiser in Turre will be running a kids painting morning every Wednesday from 11am until 1pm during the school holidays. If

you can donate paint, paper, brushes and things to paint such as stones and plant pots they would be very much appreciated. A gallery of the paintings will be displayed inside the shop for customers to vote on and the prize of riding lessons has been donated for the winner. Zak’s Fish & Chip shop in Garrucha is carrying on with the promenade specials throughout the summer. For just 5€ you can choose from mini fish, chips and mushy peas; pie, chips & peas or kebab meat, chips and sauce. Then saunter along to the promenade and eat them overlooking the sea. Everything is cooked fresh so if you want to telephone your order through call Paul on 950 133 193. Here’s the proof that things are hotting up … As many of you will know, Petter has been taking accurate shade temperature readings outside his house in Mojácar for 24 years. Up until Friday 29th June the highest ever temperature reading has been 39.6 degrees, set near the end of June 1989. This has now been surpassed with a new record temperature of 40 degrees!! Petter’s house is at the cooler end of Mojacar Playa so, driven by curiosity, he calibrated a gauge against his weather station and then "took it for a drive" along the playa and out towards Turre. Mojacar Cruce, which is not so well shielded by the Sierra Cabrera, showed up as 41 degrees and Mojácar Fuente was almost 42. The highest figure was in the centre of Turre town, with a deadly 45 degrees. The countryside around Turre was one degree cooler, at 44 degrees (111 degrees Fahrenheit!!) Alkemi Hair, Beauty and Holistics have asked me to let you know that as from the 2nd July the salon will be closed on Mondays. Call Janine on 634 311 935. Derek "Budgie" Duncombe, who has been associated with Mojácar for 25 years, (he had a business here in the late 80s and still visits frequently) celebrated his 80th birthday on the 30th June. He sends greetings to his many friends in Mojacar. Beth at Etticut Salon in Turre would like to thank all the clients who so far have donated a total of

The Starlite Festival Marbella has the following line-up for July and August this year. From 14th, George Benson; Roger Hodgson (Supertramp); Armando Manzanero, Tony Bennett, Christopher Cross, Hugh Laurie, Paul Anka, Miguel Bosé, Rosario, Lolita & Antonio Carmona, Simple Minds, Raphael, Julio Iglesias and Estopa. For bookings and more info go to or A bit closer to home from 7th to 11th August, the ‘I Festival de Flamenco y Trovo’ is taking place at Vera town square and bullring to include a two day song and dance contest. The event will feature: Trovos of Alpujarra, Unión y Cartagena and Latin America. Trovo's roots are in Cuba where

traditionally the songs spoke poetically of love and the trials of every day life. They were sung to a solo guitar accompaniment with a variety of rhythms but the boleros were, and are, the most popular. In the late twentieth century Trovo spread through much of Latin America and finally into Spain offering different styles and interpretations. Some commentators claim that some modern Trovo is a kind of Latino rap music. At this festival you'll hear both singers and guitar accompanists of three different groups improvising lyrics and music on themes of love and passion. For more information go to www.festivaldeflamencoytrovodevera. or Festival de Flamenco y Trovo de Vera on facebook. The European Commission and the IMF have recommended that Spain adjust IVA on certain products and services. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been insisting that he won’t raise IVA from its current 18-percent rate which means that the current reduced eightpercent rate applied to the majority of food and sanitary products, ground transport, concert, movie and museum tickets and the superreduced four-percent rate for basic foodstuffs, such as milk, fruit and vegetables could well be on the increase. The DGT traffic authorities in Spain, just a week after saying they were considering increasing maximum speeds on autovias and autopistas from 120km/h to 130km/ h, has now said they are to reduce the velocity on secondary roads from 100km/h to 90km/h. They say that the chance of having an accident is double on secondary roads and last year they accounted for 80% of the deaths on the roads. A variable speed is to be introduced on autopistas and autovias - the maximum speed will be shown on panels and be fixed in accordance with the weather and other conditions of the road. The new regulations are hoped to come into effect in the second half of the year. DONNA’S BOUTIQUE in Turre opened on June 8th with a bang, throughout the day women in their droves walked through the doors, they came from as far as San Juan, Mazarrón, Arboleas, Albox, Mojácar and of course Turre. Donna, who works the markets in some of these areas was overwhelmed with the support given from her existing client base and from newcomers on the day. The Boutique, situated next to restaurant Meson del Pobre and Super Corner English Supermarket, is now officially open to the public and within the month her online shopping website will be available to all. Donna who stocks sizes from 8 to 28 would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made it on the day.

address. This is a number that is unique to each device and nothing could travel the net without it. The internet, at present, is operating on a 32 bit binary system and this system gives us only so many possible combinations of unique IP numbers. 4,294,967,296(or 4.3 billion for short) is the maximum amount of IP addresses that can be stored using a 32 bit binary system and IANA (the Internet Assigned Numbers Association) have recently handed out the last ones. There are no more! Now IANA are going back through numbers that have been handed out in the past to see if they are being used and are harvesting or recycling the ones that aren’t. This is a noble endeavour but it isn’t going to solve the problem in the long term. We are going to have to make a new start. The only long term solution is going to be to throw away the old 32 bit system and adopt a new 64 bit system. That will give us 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 possible combinations. I don’t even know how to say that number but we can rest assured it is very, very big. This 64 bit system will be called IP 5 as apposed to the current 32 bit system called IP 4, which has been in use since 1981. There are

eading the writings of theTaoist sage Wei Po-Yang will remind us in difficult times that, as he said, “Worry is preposterous, we don’t know enough to worry”. I like that. I have had many an occasion in the past to feel compelled to remind myself of that little gem of wisdom. It has brought me through days more dark than I care to remember. But what if some reliable new information presented itself that was irrefutably worthy of worry? What would I do then? Well, that has happened! I’m not going to lemming myself or build an arc or do anything grandiose but I must admit to being worried. The thing is …. The internet is full! The thing is this. All internet devices, whether they be laptops or mobile phones or in some instances your burglar alarm system or even heating system all have an IP

mutterings about going straight to the, 128 bit, IP 6 system which would create enough IP addresses for every person on earth to own billions of internet devices and would truly solve the problem once and for all. So, what’s to worry about? If the new system is adopted, which in truth it has to be, we are all going to need to upgrade our kit. You might want to take this into account if you are presently looking for a new computer. Get something bigger than a 32bit IP4. You will be needing a 128bit IP 6 system. If you want to know more about this dilemma then you are advised to visit .... which is where I heard the doomful tale. Numberphile is a great YouTube channel. It ’s a relatively new channel run by some boffins at Nottingham University. The mission of these guys is to drop the veil of mystery on Mathematics and complicated numbers. Big ones,

enigmatic ones, fun ones (believe it or not) and mysterious ones. In very lay-manny terms and in documentary style all the mysteries of the universe of numbers and maths are dispelled, explained and hopefully understood. I wouldn’t describe their work as a ‘study aid’ but it is entertaining and informative. Of the many subjects covered are such enigmas as ‘the number of the beast 666’ and what that is really all about. It covers Pi and its beautiful ratios and significance. The legendary 23 enigma, perfect numbers and what they are all about, magic squares, 145 and why it causes melancholy and of course the famous Truncated Icosahedron, better known to most of us as the Football Association Ball. Something I am hoping Spain will put to very good use in the what, to you, will probably be the past. in Barcelona, firemen have managed to control a fire which started on Friday 29th and which has burnt 909 hectares. There was a fire at the La Mata area of Mojácar on Saturday 30th June, reasonably quickly extinguished I presume as no major news about it since, but it does lend itself as a warning to be extra careful and vigilant – people have been seen throwing their cigarette buts out of the car window even now! Glass and cans are just as bad as they can easily ignite the tinder dry grassland caused by these extreme hot temperatures. Bear in mind that if you are ever found responsible for causing a bush fire, even inadvertently, you can be held liable for consequential damages under the latest Spanish anti-fire laws.

holidays. Councillor for Tourism and Trade, Rafael Rodríguez from the IU, has made a presentation of his summer campaign to promote Andalucía. He said that if all residents in Andalucía stayed here for the summer they would make a substantial contribution to sustaining the regional economy during the crisis. The Ministry for Health is proposing to remove 456 medications from public financing as part of the cuts in the health service. The objective being to save 440 million euros on medicines used to treat ‘lesser symptoms’. The plan is that doctors can prescribe what they wish, but if it is on the excluded list the patient will have to pay for the entire cost of the medicine. And finally … At the time of going to press the Valencia fire which started on Thursday 28th June was advancing out of control in Valencia and Castellón and nearly 2000 people had been evacuated from their homes. Investigations continue into how the blaze started but the latest theory is that negligence in the installation of solar panels to a private home could be to blame. The two operators of the company have been arrested and charged with the crime of causing damage against the environment through negligence and together with their employer they face huge penalties. remainder but soon finds his good intentions draw him into a viciously cynical conspiracy to cause armed conflict around the globe. Convinced that effete and ineffective Western Governments are hamstrung and unable to tackle the threat of the world falling under Sharia Law, a secret alliance between senior radical Christians is devoting itself to aggressively combating the spread of Islam - they intend to provoke a backlash among the Christian world which will unleash the Final Crusade What begins as one man’s personal journey to rediscover himself and his values, unfolds to become a fast paced action-packed drama of someone fighting not just for his own life and those of his family but also for the lives of millions of innocent people. A chillingly convincing debut novel which begins in the peaceful Andalucian sunshine then twists and turns across Europe and the Middle East as the conspiracy reveals itself. Falling somewhere in the void between the politico-religious themes of Robert Ludlum and Dan Brown, with the grit of Lee Child, PICK A NUMBER will leave you wondering when not if - this is going to happen. ‘PICK A NUMBER’ is available as an e-book in all formats of e-reader from or for Kindle only direct from Amazon Kindle Books (£1.91) and to order in print (£7.99 + p&p) also from If you want your own signed copy, Tony will be attending book-signing events at various venues around the area so watch out for posters advertising where and when.

Local author and ex-Television Producer Tony Redston has just published his debut novel. Tony, a long-time hispanophile, first came to the area in 1999 and was totally captivated. Although still deeply involved in a busy career producing high quality drama for BBC Television, Tony knew the time was approaching to wind down and do something completely different, so he bought a plot of land near Sorbas and began building a house there. The usual struggle to obtain planning permission took two years and two years more of playing the traditional Spanish game of ‘Prod-the-Builder’ saw the project reach a stage where he could move in. Thanks to internet technology he was able begin a new life developing scripts in the sunshine, rather than fighting the weather on location in the UK. Good fortune smiled once again when he met long-time resident of the Mojácar area Debbie Green, known to many new-comers to Spain through her Gestoria business Q&A Services. But despite the relaxing charms of the sea, the tapas bars, the golf courses and taxi-driving teenagers there seemed to be something missing and eventually itchy fingertips led him back to the keyboard to try to satisfy his creative urges. The upshot of this is ‘PICK A NUMBER’ - a conspiracy-theory thriller to rival the mastery of Robert Ludlum and Dan Brown. A massive win on the Euro lottery brings Alex Burgess the kind of financial good fortune we might all wish for. Having made suitable provision for the future of his loved ones he resolves to make philanthropic use of the

Sun Smart Information Sun Protection Advice ... by Denise - Pampered C What is SPF? … SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. If your skin would burn in 10 minutes in the afternoon sun without protection then using a "broad spectrum" sun screen with an SPF 15 will give you 150 minutes (2½ hours) of protection before burning. The higher the protection the longer you can stay in the sun. Access to shade is important as is drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration. An SPF15 will give you 93% sun protection, an SPF30 will give you 96% sun protection. No sunscreen, no matter how high the factor can provide 100% protection. C Sun screen should be applied 30 minutes before exposure and it is crucial that you re-apply Sun Screen generously and regularly as it only works if you use enough - about every 2 hours or more often if you are sweating, getting wet or in a windy climate. As a guide for an average person, around 2 teaspoons of sun screen for arms, head and neck and 2 tablespoons for the rest of the exposed areas. Don't be tempted to sunbathe longer than your SPF Sun Screen allows as reapplication does not prevent burning or skin damage. No

sunscreen, whether Factor 15 or 50 will give you the protection it claims unless you apply it properly. Some sunscreens claim to provide effective protection after just one application but we know that re-applying regularly is very important. Plus you are more likely to get even coverage and avoid missing bits that may then get sunburnt. C Always protect your lips with a special Lip Balm. Also other sensitive parts of the body require special consideration if you like to sunbathe topless and don't forget to protect your eyes from the UV rays to avoid cataracts, retinal damage and macular degeneration. Buy wraparound sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA & UVB radiation. Colour or darkness of lenses is not significant to the protection received. Contact lens wearers can now buy contact lens with UV protection. C Children under the age of six months should not be exposed to the sun, since their skin is highly sensitive to the chemical ingredients in sunscreen as well as to the sun’s rays. Shade and protective clothing are the best ways to protect infants from the sun. C Stay safe in the sun - prevent premature ageing and/or skin cancer … burn your burgers, not your body. A group of fourth year students from the Segovia Military Academy were in Mojácar and Turre between the 18th and 29th June. The students, (ranked into 3 groups, namely lower intermediate, intermediate, or upper intermediate) were here on an intensive immersion course in English. They attended classes in the morning followed by sports activities in the afternoons, and were hosted by volunteer "homestay" families in the two towns. They also went on cultural excursions, for instance to Cabo de Gata and to the old gold mines at Rodalquilar. (These now abandoned mines were established and operated by a British company at the start of the last century, and reverted to Spanish control during the 1950s.) Another cultural event was a "Scottish night", courtesy of Eric and Lainey Harvey, complete with bagpipes thanks to David Weir. Their teacher was Andrew Mortimer, who was also the event organiser, helped by Jean Macpherson and Myles Morris. The organisers would like to give heartfelt thanks to the town halls of Mojácar and Turre for their splendid cooperation and assistance. They give thanks also to the teachers Wendy Gretton, Patrick and Jill Bennett, Simon Taylor and Pam Moore and express their deep gratitude to the many families who played hosts to the students. A special visit to the academy in Segovia is being planned for September, and anyone interested in joining the visit is invited to contact Andy by e-mail on

On their penultimate day there was a beach barbecue for the students, their teachers and their hosts. Local residents Mark Sinclair and Simon Taylor set up two portable barbecues and sweated over the hot coals on a sweltering day that saw shade temperatures peak at 36 degrees. A prize-giving ceremony was held in the Turre "multiusos" building at midday on the 29th June, just before the students returned to Segovia. Every student to whom I spoke had enjoyed the course and hoped to return next year, just before qualifying as an officer. © Tálisman

Free banking in Spain appears to be coming to an end after banks were allowed to very quietly slap a number of charges on account holders. Cajamar, for example, will now charge anyone between the ages of 25 and 65 who doesn’t deposit 600€ a month a charge of 60€ a year per current account, and all debit / credit card charges seemed to have been hiked upwards. Double check your accounts for hidden charges! Car boot sales continue as normal throughout the summer up at Camping Los Gallardos. 3€ for a stall (charity stalls go free). For example, this month Tom Lee is playing lunchtime on the 22nd, and Kris Kelly is playing on the 29th. Come along and enjoy it! Confusion reigns for EU citizens trying to get their NIE numbers at the moment. Basically, Madrid has ordered that all foreigners coming to live in Spain must prove that they are able to support themselves,

but then left it up to the regions of Spain to define “support themselves”. Seville, responsible for Andalucia, has not clarified this, meaning that the National Police are unable to issue NIE numbers to EU citizens until someone pulls their finger out and issues a directive. It’s been two months now, and the foreigners office in Almeria continues to refuse to issue appointments due to the huge backlog. John the fiddler, the amazing Benidorm fiddle act, is back at Miraflores on the 21st, in a fantastic evening act outside. MOJACAR COMMUNITY LIBRARY Our new delivery of books is in the library now; we hope there is something for everyone for those hot days around the pool. I don’t know which one to read first! Run by volunteers, the library is open 11am-1pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, in the multiusos building next to the Tercero Edad café. Membership is 10€ each year for those over 60 and 12€ for others; this is a family or household membership fee. THE VAULT by Ruth Rendell.... Inspector Wexford comes out of retirement to investigate four bodies found in the peaceful garden of a London house - who are the victims and who put them there? A shocking development in his private life means the search will become more complicated. THE HISTORY ROOM by Eliza Graham.... After her marriage falls apart Meridith Cordingley returns to teach at the private school run by her father. This tranquil refuge is turned upside down when a shocking discovery is made in the history room. The police are called and what follows suggests a member of staff is controlling sinister goings on. THE HANGING WOOD by Martin Edwards.... Set in the Lake District, DCI Hannah Scarlett reopens a case to see if she can discover what really happened in the hanging wood. Did Orla Payne’s uncle really murder her brother before committing suicide? A CASTLE IN SPAIN by Matthew Parris.... Matthew was an MP, then wrote for the Times. Whilst walking in the Pyrenees, he stumbled upon a ruined mansion. A few years later he bought the property and he and his family set about restoring it to its former glory. THE WAY I SEE IT BY ALAN SUGAR.... Lord Sugar has strong opinions and is not afraid to share them. Here he writes about French drivers, overpriced restaurants, his own success and even why he respects Katie Price more than most celebrities. WHY BE HAPPY WHEN YOU COULD BE NORMAL by Jeanette Winterson.... Jeanette Winterson’s first novel ‘Oranges Are Not The Only

Fruit’ was her version of the story of a terraced house, an adopted child and a thwarted giantess-Mrs Winterson. This is the true story of that book, full of hurt and humour, and a fierce love of life. THE HOUSE BY THE SEA by Santa Montefiore.... Moving from the Italian countryside to the English coast, this is a tale of love, forgiveness and the past revealed. Starting in Tuscany in 1966 where ten year old Floriana is captivated by the magnificent villa just outside her village, the tale moves forward in time to a beautiful country house hotel in Devon in 2009. KILL SHOT by Vince Flynn.... Mitch Rapp is an assassin, working his way through a list of those behind the Pan Am Lockerbie bombing. However when a kill in Paris results in him being wounded, his handlers decide he is a liability and must not be taken alive. IAN FLEMING’S COMMANDOS by Nicholas Rankin.... Working at the British Admiralty in WWII, Ian Fleming had the brilliant idea of setting up a unit of troops to steal enemy intelligence. This is the story of 30 Assault Unit and how their exploits formed the basis of Fleming’s great spy stories. THE CHURCHILLS by Mary S Lovell.... Mary Lovell charts the triumphant political and military campaigns, the construction of great houses, the disastrous marriages and the profoundly happy ones of this family. The book concentrates on the years 1850-1978, between 1870 and 1950 there were at least twenty remarriages. All the stories that we were not allowed to know - the upstairs ‘goings on’.

The Mountain Man Quiz On Sunday 24th June ‘The Mountain Man Quiz’ one of the largest ever quizzes to take place in Almeria, took place on the patio of the Kubitan Bar at the Hostal Meson, Arboleas, in memory of Kevin Brewder who passed away after a brave battle with cancer. Kevin’s wife Nancy wanted to show her appreciation for the support that she and Kevin had received from Mojacar Area Cancer Support (MACS) during Kevin’s illness and organised the event along with very good friends Maureen and Gary Boulton. Despite the England v Italy game, 29 teams of 4 turned up out of the 31 entered. Quiz master, Maureen, put together an excellent mix of questions teasing brains but giving everyone a chance at the prize. It was well sponsored by local businesses which included 80€ worth of PC services and a days work of painting and decorating. The winning team was one of the Hostal Meson’s resident quiz teams, the Fearsome Foursome - Mike & Valerie Mallen and Jeff & Linda Briton who won the star prize of 80€. MACS entered their own team, Chilli Nuts who came a close second with the able help of Ian who made up the numbers last minute on the night. Cheers Ian ! In total 735€ was raised for MACS from the sale of quiz entry tickets and raffle tickets. The money was presented at the end of the evening by Nancy Brewder to Wayne Claridge the MACS Fundraising coordinator. FREE

DOG OF THE MONTH LOLO is a small dog, four years old and very people-friendly. He wants, and asks, for attention and he may bark and jump up onto your lap to get it. He likes to cuddle and is a bit needy for your affection. Lolo is kennelled with two young male puppies. He gets along with them but may get a little jealous when they get attention. Lolo tries to rush out of doors as he does not want to be closed in but wants to stay with you. He walks well on the leash and really enjoys outings. No food aggression or guarding has been observed. He has not been observed to play with toys as yet. He has been observed to scent mark at times. Note: It is probably best if he is not homed with young children. TABERNA - This tall greyhound is beautiful and statuesque. A lovely dog, she is easy for her caretakers to handle and manage. Whilst friendly with people she can be dominant with other dogs; at mealtimes she may try to keep other dogs away from their food, or even snap at them. Therefore we suggest if she is homed with other dogs that she is fed separately. PEDRO - Observations by foster carer: Lived happily with two other dogs in the household (female). Chases cats and rabbits. No toy or food guarding or possessive behaviour noted. Has not been seen with children. Secure boundary recommended as a good jumper though always came back. Travels well in the car though may bark at other dogs through the window. Walks well on lead and was friendly when met other dogs out walking. He may take objects and chew them so will need management in this area. Needs regular exercise. Not anxious when left at home. Very people friendly and likes attention. Is used to sleeping in the house. Was observed to be clean in the house though started scent marking as he got older. Enjoys playing in the garden.

MISTRAL - is friendly with people and likes to go for walks. She is playful and tolerant of her dominant and playful kennelmate (that she was abandoned with). Nice dog. Mistral has shown herself to not always be sociable with other females and some males.

FRANKIE is fully vaccinated and neutered. He is good friends with MERLIN, so a home together for these lovely boys would be nice. Should you like any further information, please contact Diane on 950 617 643 or Ruth on 637 817 982

Solution & Answers on Page 30

You Can Not Be Serious By The Other Half

On the patriotism scale I reckon that I am about halfway up. I do not, and never will, possess a pair of Union Flag underpants, yet I did have a pair of Union Flag socks, I think bought about the time of the Silver Jubilee, worn, worn out, and never replaced. I pay attention when the National Anthem is played, and I know the words to the first verse, yet while it is played I do not rise to my feet and stand to attention, I remain seated on the sofa. Yet somehow the Diamond Jubilee, and the television coverage thereof, gripped me and held me captive for the whole weekend. I was prepared to dip in and out of it as and when the fancy took me, but no, I was hooked from the moment when those myriad of manually powered, or as they used to call them in the old days, rowing boats first glided across the screen. The celebrations had it all from the Queen’s horses in a show all of their own to the Queen’s barge and the magnificent Gloriana, to a concert for the masses (and there were masses) to the procession, the flypast and the religious service. Everything that represents that which we do well was on show. And we do do it well. We are masters of the art of grandiose public displays. I honestly believe that we do it better than any other nation. The Russians and the Chinese may be able to produce thousands of identical marching soldiers, all performing with frightening precision of step and formation, but do they have the horses which swish their tails and toss their heads? Do they have riders clad in the shiniest of cuirasses and the most colourful of dress uniforms who maintain calm and control even when said horses get a bit skittish? No, they have identically dressed robots, drilled to obedience. We have identically dressed humans, who are using their horses and their uniforms to perform an act of appreciation and respect for our very Britishness, and for the person who represents that as our Queen. And that brings me on to the subject of the Queen. I challenge any other 86 year old to undertake the schedule that she had and remain so constant. Not once did she yawn. Not once did she seem bored. Not once did she falter, even when the absence of her husband meant that the weight of the whole performance fell solely on her shoulders – no, she kept calm and carried on. We should be proud of her, and of our history, and chequered though some of it may be, by and large we have a lot to be proud about. Let us appreciate it, not with Union Flag underpants, but with the dignity that befits our great nation. PAGE 27

Mojacar Local Buses

1st June to 30th Sept

Buses run every half hour from Puerta Marina (25 and 55 past the hour) to Marina de la Torre, with detours to Mojácar village.

I fished with ‘Orca Steve’ and ‘Blister Steve’ and everything looked good for a great day’s fishing. There was little wind or swell, no current and fish jumping as we left the harbour although they didn’t want to know any of our lures. That was, a deep diving rapala, a long tailed rubber muppet and a Devon minnow or the feathers they were following up. Steve also tried the Spanish method of a weight followed by 50 feet of line and a set of feathers. Ok but it means you have to hand line the trace in after you pick up the weight. It works for the Spanish but it’s not for me unless I see it catching fish better than I can, which at the moment is also negligible. We trolled for 2½ hours without a take and we frustratingly saw loads of fish jumping around our lures. We also saw lots of sunfish even though the wind had got up by then and the sea had become choppy. I did hook a big sunfish twice I believe, weighing about 40lbs but lost it both times. We struggled to catch any fish on the bottom too that day. Talking of fish jumping, about 1.2 km in front of the Beachcomber last Wednesday night there were seagulls diving in and others picking up presumably fish from the surface of the water and big silver predators jumping out of the water, I’m guessing barracudas, bluefish or palometes.

And a danger to some ships. A few weeks ago I was sitting on ‘Orca Steve’s’ boat drowning prawns when I heard a voice say. 'Pick me up.' I looked around and couldn't see anyone other than my mates who were looking the other way. I thought I was dreaming when I heard the voice say again, 'Pick me up.' I looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a baby turtle. I said, 'Are you talking to me?' The turtle said, 'Yes, I'm talking to you.' Pick me up, then kiss me; and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that your fishing friends, ‘Orca Steve’, ‘Blister Steve’ and ‘Chef Jeremy’ are envious and jealous, because I will be your girlfriend!' I looked at the turtle for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully and placed it in my shirt pocket. The turtle said, 'What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said?' I said, 'Kiss me, and I will be your beautiful

girlfriend.' I opened my pocket, looked at the turtle and said, 'Nah. At my age, I'd rather have a talking turtle.' ‘With age comes wisdom’ For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel: 950 473 099.
