appy New Year to those who have not seen the January on-line issue, which, I am pleased to hear, was well received. And here we are in February already! February is carnival month and as celebration days tend to vary it is best to check with the individual towns for exact dates and times. Turre is from the 7th to the 16th; as is the famous Aguilas Carnival. Mojácar’s is from the 8th to 15th and a program of processions and entertainment can be found at Info for Turre can be found at, for Aguilas at The 10th Of February is Chinese New Year and the year of the Snake. Pretty much celebrated in the same way as the western New Year is. Other years of the snake are 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001. People born in the year of the Snake are said to be romantic and deep-thinking, wise and charming, although they tend to dismiss others too quickly and are a bit stingy with money. Ideal jobs include teaching or psychiatry. Famous snakes include: Jean Simmons, Val Doonican, Sir Roger Banister, Burt Bacharach, Neil Diamond, Paddy Ashdown, Vivienne Westwood and Bob Dylan. It’s Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) on the 12th, Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent) on the 13th and then it’s Cupid caps on for Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Lemon Lounge, Irish Rover, Restaurant La Parata, Torre Bahia and The New Kimrick all have something special going on – check their adverts throughout for exact details. For your cards, gifts and flowers then Occasions has a goodly range to suit most tastes and requirements. It doesn’t end there! On the 23rd a benefit party in aid of MACS is being held at The New Kimrick to celebrate 18 years of fitness in Mojácar. Dress code is 80s and you can contact Alison of Get Fit, Stay Fit for tickets and info on 637 465 487. Finally on the 28th is Día de Andalucía - note this is a public holiday! While you catch your breath you’ll need to polish off your shamrocks, or your blarney stones, and make a start on your Easter bonnets … Easter falls at the end of March this year with St David’s, La Vieja, Mother’s and St Patrick’s days inbetween! Until next month, Tracey

After she lost her job at Rent Mojácar she went to Granada and enrolled on a full course to teach English as a foreign language. She says she was twice the age of most of the other students, and that she studied so hard that she only managed 3-4 hours sleep a night for weeks on end. However, it all paid off. She gained the top qualification and has immediately found work in an English academy in Vera. Crash Repairs Jim is now offering a budget range of products and services for older cars that need tidying up and will tailor the job to suit your pocket. He can also now offer a courtesy car for jobs of a longer duration. Go to his Crash Repairs advert on page 10 for contact details. The Iron Art Fair held on the 30th January at El Real Antas, was a huge success attracting both old and new customers. The hot pasties sold out in just over an hour and the white chocolate cheesecake with baileys was also a winner. All stall holders are returning for the next one which will be on 27th February, as well as new ones booking in. Next time the hot pasties will be joined by sausage rolls and scones! Interested stall holders please call 637 259 033. Further proof - were it necessary - that strong unsweetened coffee is the only correct workplace beverage and that sickly imitation pop is the devil's own satanic brew has emerged this week. Boffins in the States have confirmed that sweetened and "diet" drinks are associated with a significantly heightened risk of mental illness, whereas coffee tends to preserve the sanity of the drinker. The mental illness in question here is that

modern scourge depression, whose effects are quite literally no laughing matter. The study of the incidence of depression was carried out among 263,925 Americans and their beverage-quaffing preferences. According to a statement on the research from the American Academy of Neurology: People who drank more than four cans or cups per day of soda were 30 percent more likely to develop depression than those who drank no soda. Those who drank four cans of fruit punch per day were about 38 percent more likely to develop depression than those who did not drink sweetened drinks. People who drank four cups of coffee per day were about 10 percent less likely to develop depression than those who drank no coffee. The risk appeared to be greater for people who drank the diet variety than the regular. It is already well known that coffee protects the liver from the harmful effects of booze, wards off deadly prostate cancer and even helps prevent skin cancer: whereas sweetened beverages are effectively a form of tinned or bottled death. At the end of January, a quarter of a million Twitter users had their accounts hacked and users' passwords, usernames, emails and other data taken. Twitter has invalidated the passwords of affected users and sent them emails to inform them. However, the biggest worry for most of Twitter's 200 million active users is actually not this attack, but the new

"phishing" scams the attack is inspiring. Because Twitter users know they need to be on the lookout for emails asking them to change their passwords, criminals are sending out very similar messages. If users click on the links in these fake twitter emails, they again risk having their accounts hacked. The answer is simple - "Don't Click On Links In Emails"!! (Especially not ones that ask you to change your password.) Go directly to the web site, log in normally, and change your password using the genuine website's instructions - without clicking on email links. And finally, at the time of going to press the news was out that Mojácar Mayoress Rosa Maria Cano summoned our Chiringuito owners to the town hall to tell them that in her quest to eliminate ‘botellones’ (street parties), bars are not going to be allowed to play any music at all, even background music, unless they are licensed to play music, or have applied for a special events one. Naturally all the bar owners are completely stunned at the move and feel this could be the final nail in the coffin for Mojácar. A ‘Save Our Sounds’ campaign is currently running on facebook. Go to Spectrum FM Costa Almeria and you will find the Save Mojácar Music track to listen to and share. It is hoped that the more likes and shares received, the more influence it will have with the Town Hall.

dos T The current townhall of Garrucha (PP) has discovered that the previous administration bought 200 litter bins at 900€ a piece – when the usual list price is around 80€. “If you really go for it”, said an expert consulted by, “you might get some special ones made up which would cost you, tops, 500€ a bin”. Foul play is suspected. Some good news – the 179,000€ bill was never settled as the PSOE were kicked out in the last elections. The townhall came across the invoice in the unpaid folder when they were tidying up the place and thought it strange that the company never bothered to chase up the bill. The Mayor, recently denounced by the PSOE for sending all townhall vehicles to be serviced exclusively by his brother, seems triumphant by the discovery, and said that when he asked the previous administration about this they denied all knowledge. “Very suspicious” he said. T As you speed into Camping Los Gallardos towards Miraflores restaurant, keep an eye open for the workers as they scurry around - a lot of work is being carried out around the site to get it ready for the new year, including a major new entrance! Just part of a series of upgrades being carried out across the site this month. Check out their schedule to the right to see the great acts lined up this month. T Talking of Miraflores, you can now book a table online at, and if you have a clubcard, you get an additional 100 clubcard points for doing so! Check it out, it shows availability at different times and even lets you select where you want to sit. If you don’t have a clubcard, get one today!

T Horsemeat has been found in burgers onsale in Spanish supermarkets, according to consumer group OCU, who have also published an analysis of the quality of the meat inside supermarket frozen burgers. They analysed 20 supermarket own brand burgers and found horse DNA inside those from Eroski and Alipende. “Not illegal” comments OCU, “but certainly false advertising”. T Camping Los Gallardos is pleased to announce that they are the first campsite in this area to be accepted into the newly resurgent Federation of Andalucian Campsites, the government backed trade body. It’s a move that again proves the stablity of the site, and by becoming an early member of the official trade body, gives them a window into the regional government and their plans for the tourism trade. T The Almeria Lawn Bowling Club is continuing with their very popular “Sunday friendly” matches. Open to all bowlers, it costs only a euro to take part (funds go to the club) and prizes are awarded to the winners - so if you want to come along to any of them, keep up to date with the latest news via Facebook or on their website Known as the “friendly club”, and with good reason, the ALB are bowling enthusiasts who bowl out of the greens up at Camping Los Gallardos. Vic P. keeps the bowlers up to date on his website, and new Captain Colin keeps the calm up on the rinks! News & gossip here is from Almería news & gossip!

“Working together to make a difference” Saturday 26th January 2013 was a night that many people will talk about and remember for a long time; a night when MACS and PAWS joined together to put on a Charity Event which can only be described as a massive success. The fundraising teams of both PAWS and MACS worked tirelessly to ensure that a good night was had by all – and it showed, with the marvellous sum of 5,447.03 Euros raised, which will be shared equally between the two charities; the organisation from start to finish was, so to speak, ‘Simply the Best’. Tio Tomas’s Hostal Rural in Turre rocked to the music of Lady Ellen, Tony Justice and Abba Elite. An auction half way through the night helped to swell the fundraising coffers and many people supported the raffle, held throughout the evening, buying lots of tickets and winning lots of fabulous prizes. Food was provided in the form of a selection of tapas and bread and most people availed themselves of this, a bargain at 6€ for 5 very well portioned rations of delicious tapas. The night culminated with people releasing a balloon into the star-filled sky to mark the loss of a loved one or remember those currently struggling with illness. Once the event was advertised tickets were sold quickly and there is no doubt that should ever a function as this be held again, the reputation of MACS and PAWS will precede them and the tickets will fly off the shelves. PAWS and MACS are grateful for the support of local companies in funding the event, namely, Julie Jones Peel for photography. Costa Coches of Antas, Coles of Andalucia, L ifestyle Enclosures Europe S.L., Greg & Co Bar Diner of Turre, Euro Weekly News, Pot Black Snooker, Arteglobos Fantasia, Spectrum Radio and Tomas of Hostal Rural. Also thank you to the many people and businesses that donated prizes for the Raffle - a massive thanks to you all, it couldn’t have happened without your help.

photos by Julie Jones Peel LIONS INTERNATIONAL Local people are now aware of the existence of the Vera & District Lions Club; many ask the questions who are the Lions? What do they do? The Vera & District Lions Club was initially created by a few local residents all of which at some time in the past had been members of Lions Clubs in the UK. Our numbers in the past 12 months have grown to 30 members and countless valued supporters throughout the area. Lions Club members come from all walks of life; they are manual workers, managers, directors, housewives, service personnel, just ordinary people like you and I, from a wide variety of backgrounds all bringing their individual skills together. With one common objective - To look after the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves in our local c ommunity. The Lions Club is split into two main areas F undraising, to generate the cash needs of the Club, and Welfare. Welfare covers a multitude of services for the needy. For instance in the last year we have purchased a specialist wheelchair for an elderly lady that otherwise would have been totally housebound. We purchased much needed software and books for the children’s refuge in Vera. In a ssociation with the Vera Red Cross we purchased Christmas presents for a large number of local children that otherwise would not have had a p resent at all. Many people will be aware of Rick who used to collect money in the Vera area. Rick’s health was d eteriorating mainly due to his living conditions and he needed to return to the UK.The Vera & District Lions Club paid for his flight, took him to the airport, met him at Gatwick and took him to a centre in the UK. The club is also becoming increasingly involved in providing food for the hungry throughout our area. The local welfare needs are enormous and we are striving to help as many local people as possible. Vera Lions have collected over 1000 pairs of spectacles for people in various countries that would otherwise not be able to see clearly. The fundraising committee has organised a busy programme of events for the year which includes a Valentine’s Quiz in Bédar; our games/ race nights will be touring the bars in the area, the next one being at the Blue Parrot, Vera Playa in early March. The Half Marathon which due to circumstances had to be cancelled will now be a 10k Fun Run and take place in early April supported by a Craft Fair, BBQ and band at the Vera Hotel. The Craft Fair will be the first of regular monthly Fairs to be held at the Vera Hotel on the first Sunday of the month. Our programme also includes a Bowls Tournament, an Open Golf Trophy and The Last Night at the Proms, so dig out your DJs and flags. Oh, does anybody have a Spitfire for a fly past? The Vera & District Lions Club meets at the Vera Hotel on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. If you are aware of somebody that needs our a ssistance please contact our Welfare Chairman Glyn on 670 816 332. KYANO - presumed brother of Hoove. Young and friendly dog, sociable and playful. Enjoys being around you for cuddles and play.

RUSTY - is a very playful dog and will play all day long. He is a little shy and may hide from strangers. He travels well in the car and is also good on the lead.

HOOVE - presumed brother of Kyano. Young and friendly dog, sociable and playful. A little bit exciteable as he is so happy to be with you. Loves to play. Very people focused.

MELISSA - a very friendly young dog, getting along with people and other dogs alike. She is active and energetic, likes to play and go for walks. Very much a sociable dog and enjoys contact and cuddling.

SABA - is a people friendly dog and we believe that she once lived in a home. She is energetic, athletic and walks on the leash. She is playful and bouncy but also cuddly.

AL - appeared on an urbanisation after the floods and was fed by a kind couple who unfortunately do not live in Spain full time. As there was no one else to feed him when they left they asked PAWS to take him in and find him a home. He is friendly but timid and does not enjoy life in the cattery and needs a home of his own. He has been neutered and will be vaccinated before homing. If you would like any further information about AL, please contact Diane on 950 617 643 or Ruth on 637 817 982.

We have been looking after this beautiful ginger tom cat as his former owners had to return to the UK and could not take him with them. Now due to our own unexpected circumstances we need to find him a permanent home. He is about 3 years old and very well behaved. He is neutered and had his initial injections. He is very clean and litter trained and is happy both indoors and out. He is not a fussy eater and only eats dry cat food. This ‘purrfect’ cat loves to play and to hunt, loves being fussed over and is used to other cats. Comes with his own cat carrier, bedding, large bag of food and 6 months supply of Spot on. If you can offer this gorgeous cat a home please ring Net on 699 240 821. Or email me on

By The Other Half Am I glad to see the back of January! It’s not January itself that I am so keen to be rid of, it’s that wind that went with it. Not being a sailor, I see very little point in wind. I suppose it’s nice to have a balmy breeze wafting across the patio and cooling the fevered brow on a hot summer’s day – but it never does! Come summer, when there is a need for a bit of gentle motion in the ground level airstream it disappears completely, whereas during the winter months, when we need halcyon days to allow the sun to warm the house through, the wind screams up the valley like a banshee in a temper. I can maintain a relative calm in the face of a gale; not so the Higher Authority - She hates it! She claims that it ‘ruins her hair’, and I must agree she did look a little haystacky on several occasions in January. In a spirit of helpfulness I pointed out to her that her hair wasn’t actually ruined, simply a little dishevelled, and that there was nothing wrong with it that a comb wouldn’t put right. For some reason this displeased her. She fixed me with a pitying stare. ‘You wouldn’t know’ she said. ‘You haven’t got enough hair to get dishevelled.’ Ouch! I ask you – was that fair? It was the verbal equivalent of a kick in the bollocks. Marital calm, but not peace, had been restored as we retired to bed. The wind was rampaging through the garden and assaulting the house as though it were a personal enemy. I was calm in the face of this onslaught, but the Higher Authority was uncharacteristically jumpy. Something fell over and rolled around a bit. ‘What’s that?’ she exclaimed loudly, just in case I had been asleep. ‘If it’s fallen over, then it can’t fall any further, and it might as well stay there.’ I argued reasonably, pulling the cover over my head. ‘Tch, I suppose I’ll have to go and check.’ With the emphasis on the I’ll, she flung back the cover and sat up on the side of the bed. ‘It could be a burglar.’ What could I do? I couldn’t let my faithful wife of many years sally forth into the teeth of the gale, and possibly the arms of a burglar, could I? I got up, donned dressing gown, and braved the elements. It was a flower pot. I am never again going to offer an opinion on the state of her hair! PAGE 23

PROCESSIONARY (FURRY) CATERPILLAR ALERT The Processionary Caterpillars do not normally show themselves until early spring, most people say March, but due to the mild winter and the recent high winds, these caterpillars are out in full force, nests have been spotted everywhere so please be on the look out if you see a nest or a chain of them on the floor. The caterpillars are covered with approximately 60,000 fine hairs, these hairs are pointed and contain an urticating toxin, similar to, but far stronger than, that found in nettles. The hairs are easily shed or broken off and if they pierce the skin or are inhaled can cause reactions that can range from a mild inflammation and irritation through to severe anaphylactic shock. In humans, after contact with the skin a rash soon appears which can be very painful and last for up to three weeks. Simply by cutting a nest down from the tree, even months after it has been vacated, can release the hairs into the atmosphere and these can easily be inhaled causing breathing problems. Both cats and dogs find the long procession of caterpillars hard to resist and often investigate them by sniffing at them and sometimes licking them. Inhaling the hairs can severely affect an animal’s breathing and licking them can cause necrosis of the tongue such that parts of the tongue turn black and may drop off or have to be amputated by a veterinary surgeon. If your pet stops eating and appears distressed do not hesitate to take it to a vet, if caught early enough high doses of cortisone will prevent permanent damage and your pet should make a full recovery. If you have a problem with these caterpillars you can call the "SEPRONA" branch of the Guardia Civil on 062 and ask them to come and get rid of them. For more information about SEPRONA there is a web site although sometimes the site is not available. Your local town hall is another course of action and should have an eradication system in place. A trap you can make yourselves is to take a piece of plastic and make it into a cone shape, a bit like the vet puts around the neck of an animal after surgery. It must be large enough to go around the trunk of the tree, make a few small holes around the base of the cone to let out any rainwater. When the caterpillars climb down the tree they become trapped in the cone which of course must be shiny and smooth inside so there is no grip for them to climb out. Pictured here is Baxter of Pets Paradise Wildlife Sanctuary although this photo is alarming to see, he did make a full recovery but only due to PROMPT VETERINARY ATTENTION and then only because Baxter’s owners spotted that he was standing on a caterpillar and sought immediate assistance. If they hadn’t the situation could have been fatal, or at best Baxter may have lost half his tongue! The vet needs to work very fast, and you must encourage this if it seems not so.
