SUMMER 2021 A Newsletter about Leaving Your Legacy with Adventure Unlimited
The Beauty of Giving and Receiving All gifts to Adventure Unlimited make a profound difference to our participants. They often bring a deep sense of fulfillment and joy to the donor, too. (Maybe you’ve experienced that!) Some gifts actually pay the donor back, like a charitable gift annuity (CGA). This gift planning strategy provides you with income while you receive tax benefits and bring transformative programs to thousands of participants each year. Read inside how Summit Society members Tug Miller and Donna Petress-Miller are making an impact with their CGA, as well as help in setting up your own.
WHAT’S INSIDE
Blessing Others and the World | Creating a Charitable Gift Annuity
Adventure Unlimited 2021 Metaphysical Theme
“Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, ‘Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.’ ” – Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 13
DONOR PROFILE
Blessing Others and the World “Adventure Unlimited provides an experience where young Christian Scientists can be in a supportive and loving atmosphere, where they can test and apply Christian Science on a daily basis,” Tug says. “Whatever we can do to support that is a blessing for all.” Donna Petress-Miller & Tug Miller, Summit Society members
Tug Miller first learned about Adventure Unlimited from John and Jim Andrews. The sons of Cap and Marianne Andrews, Adventure Unlimited’s founders, attended college with Tug.
In learning about a charitable gift annuity (CGA), it turned out to be a “perfect solution,” they say. They shared five reasons why they chose a CGA that benefits Adventure Unlimited: 1. They were able to provide for Adventure Unlimited for the long term while still receiving income for their daily living.
“I heard about the good A/U was doing for young Christian Scientists,” Tug says.
2. It provided tax benefits for the year it was set up.
Years later, Donna Petress-Miller, Tug’s wife, was a mentor for a teen in the DiscoveryBound National Leadership Council (NLC) 2011 class for four years and had the opportunity to visit the A/U Ranches numerous times.
3. The annual income they receive is partially tax-free.
“I saw what NLC did to inspire and help my mentee and others in the program grow in spiritual understanding,” Donna says, “and how to apply the truths of Christian Science to daily life.”
5. The beneficiaries of their trust will not feel left out since a charitable trust is not part of the estate.
They also experienced firsthand what they describe as a great time in a loving atmosphere at Adult Mini Camp, which they attended in 2017. So during their estate planning, they looked for a solution that would bring those opportunities to others.
4. A CGA makes the gift permanent and does not have to go through the distribution process when the estate is settled.
“Christian Science has blessed our lives in so many ways,” Donna says. “Young people need to have experiences with other Christian Scientists so they share these experiences, support each other and grow in understanding. It makes us feel that we are doing something to bless others and the world. Is there anything better than that?”
WHAT IS THE SUMMIT SOCIETY? The Summit Society was established to honor those who have included Adventure Unlimited in their long-term plans through a bequest provision, retirement plan assets, life insurance policy, life income gift or other deferred giving arrangement. If you’ve done this already, please let us know! We would love to be able to thank you for your significant and special gift.
GIVING STRATEGIES
Increase Your Income with a CGA Being generous with a nonprofit organization like Adventure Unlimited can pay you back in a variety of ways. One strategy is to boost your retirement income and help Adventure Unlimited participants through a charitable gift annuity (CGA).
How it works
ANNUITY RATES
A CGA is a contract between you and Adventure Unlimited and is issued through the National Gift Annuity Foundation, a leading provider of charitable gift annuities. It works like this: You contribute cash or appreciated securities to establish a CGA (minimum gift $20,000). In exchange, you will receive annuity payments for life (the annuity rate is based on your age at the time of your gift; see adjacent box). There are other benefits: A portion of your annuity payments may be tax-free; and you will receive a partial charitable deduction for your gift to Adventure Unlimited, as well as the satisfaction of furthering our mission.
The rate you receive on your annuity payment is based on your age at the time of your gift. These are annuity rates from the American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA) as of July 1, 2020 (approved again April 2021):
AGE
70 75 80 85 90+
RATE 4.7% 5.8% 6.5% 7.6% 8.6%
Example 1
Example 2
In exchange for a gift of $25,000 for an Adventure Unlimited gift annuity, a 75-year-old donor would receive payments of $1,450 annually (5.8%) and a charitable deduction of approximately $11,170.
In exchange for a gift of $100,000 for an Adventure Unlimited gift annuity, an 80-year-old donor would receive payments of $6,500 annually (6.5%) and a charitable deduction of approximately $49,000.
