Planning with Purpose Changing the trajectory of a young person’s life through a gift can bless the giver in so many ways. Those who choose to invest significantly in A/U Ranches and DiscoveryBound participants often tell us of the joy they feel in making a difference for them.

There are other benefits to making these transformative investments, using smart planning. Giving through a donor advised fund (DAF) is one way to continue receiving the tax benefits of making charitable donations while also feeling the real impact of the gift. If you haven’t heard of DAFs, we’ll get you up to speed with the stories in this issue.

Inspired Giving through Tax Deduction Management Jim Doll remembers climbing a 14,000-foot peak as a high school camper and feeling like he couldn’t make it.

“I felt it would be a good way of getting others who are on the fence to give, knowing their contribution is doubled,” Jim explains, “and more campers will get the wonderful experience at the A/U Ranches.”

He adds that using his DAF to make the gift was good “tax deduction management.”

“I wanted to turn back – something you really can’t do – but my counselor sat down with me and we worked through my thought of limitation,” he says. “I was able to continue, and we got to the top of the mountain to a wonderful 100-mile view of the great state of Colorado, and God’s whole world.”

Now more than four decades later, Jim has made it possible for many other campers to have their own transformative experiences through a recent generous $20,000 matching gift to the A/U Ranches Campership Fund, made through his donor advised fund (DAF).

“If you have a high income year, you can put large capital gains into the [DAF] and take the deduction that year, and then contribute to Adventure Unlimited and other non-profits over several years with those dollars, while taking the tax deduction in one year when you can use it the most,” Jim says.

Why is it important to him to help kids go to camp?

“In most places CS kids are alone in school, and communities…. through Adventure Unlimited programs, …

CS kids find each other and make Jim Doll friendships that last a lifetime, in a fun and safe environment.”

Smart Tax Planning for Making Major Gifts: A Donor Advised Fund Many donors have established donor advised funds (DAF) since the 2017 Tax Act, which doubled the standard deduction from $12,000 to $24,000 for married couples and eliminated the deductibility of many major gifts.

With smart tax planning, growing numbers of donors are now using a DAF to pre-fund multiple years of charitable giving.

They alternate between claiming the larger standard deduction when using their DAF to make a major gift and itemizing deductions when they replenish their DAF. Here’s an example: Married donors Mr. and Mrs. Jackson historically claimed itemized deductions of $15,000 annually, including $10,000 to Adventure Unlimited. In 2020, their deductions ($15,000) will be less than their combined standard deduction ($24,000), so they won’t receive any tax benefit from giving $10,000 to Adventure Unlimited.

Here’s how Mr. and Mrs. Jackson can receive a tax benefit from their charitable gifts: • They give $30,000 to their DAF in 2020 to prefund three years of gifts to Adventure Unlimited.

• They itemize deductions in 2020.

• They use their DAF for all charitable giving and replenish it as needed, claiming the standard deduction except in years when the DAF is replenished.

The result is maximum charitable tax savings and full leverage of the increased standard deduction.
