ABC girls laugh at the face of winter! During Winter, we all know that it is super tough to stay motivated to exercise. Comfort food and warm duvets beckon and even the most dedicated person will admit that they have at least had one day where they don’t feel like exercising. This is where The 40 Day Dare comes in – each year, we challenge campers across the country to attend each and every session of the Winter Special. That’s 40 sessions and this year, a phenomenal 153 women managed to complete it!

  It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. Summer is finally here, and the festive season is upon us too. Over the course of 2012, we have been inspired by the huge number of women who have pushed their limits to get the results they dreamed of – our camps across the country have seen record numbers and attendance has been fantastic! From our regular camps to the hugely successful 40 Day Dare and even custom one day classes for corporate wellness, the ABC team has worked hard throughout the year to encourage, motivate, and inspire campers to get into shape – whatever it takes. I would to thank each and every trainer, staff member and all of our franchisees for the important role that they play at ABC, changing lives one camp at a time. Of course, I would also like to thank our campers. Whatever your shape, size or fitness level, each of you has proven to yourselves that the sky is the limit! Undergoing the ABC challenge is more than getting into shape; it is also about making friends, learning how to live a healthy life and having a great deal of fun in the process. Well done to all of you! With 2013 fast approaching, my New Year’s resolution is more of a mission than a goal to be forgotten about before the year gets underway. Instead of seeing fitness as a chore or something we feel like we ought to do, I want it to be something we want to do. ABC has become a rewarding and enjoyable way to lose those few extra kilos and get beach-body ready – it is a lifestyle that embraces health, wellness and a lust for life, while not forgetting to have a lot of fun along the way! An active lifestyle means less stress, more energy and more happiness after all. From the team at Adventure Boot Camp, we hope you have enjoyed this year as much as we have! See you at camp! Huenu

    To mark the end of The 40 Day Dare, all the Gauteng trainers and campers decided to get together for a day filled with loads of fun, laughter and exercise. Campers and trainers will most certainly agree that this was one of the best days of the year! Trainers promised to do a certain exercise for each person that completed the 40 Day Dare – they performed these ‘forfeits’ at the ABC Olympics for all the campers to see. Congratulations to ABC Irene – the overall winners of the day! Click to see a video of the day!

Never having been a gym person, Vanessa was looking for something new and exciting and the moment she tried ABC, she was totally hooked! Vanessa is currently pregnant and so she is not able to attend ABC but we look forward to having her back at camp in the near future! Michelle Rozowsky, Vanessa Carreria and Genevieve van der Vyver. Zola Budd joins ABC Stellenbosch for the day

Nataniel at camp?

Former Olympic track runner Zola Budd popped into ABC Stellenbosch to get some training in before she tackled the Comrades Marathon in June this year! The trainer, Jo Dobinson, was thrilled to have her at camp and her campers were pretty chuffed too! Although Zola is famous for running barefoot, she wore shoes to camp...

No, not really. Although he was at our Brummeria location, the Pretoria Botanical Gardens and insisted on taking a picture with Gracia de Jager and her campers! Actress and entrepreneur Hanna Grobler, is a regular at this location but unlike Nathaniel, she feels the burn and works up a sweat with the others!

We turn motivation into habit Going on three years, Garmin are proud to support the campers at Adventure Boot Camp (ABC) by contributing to the positive change in lifestyle with Garmin fitness watches like the FR70. At the heart of Garmin’s fitness success is the wireless ANT+ technology, which allows the FR70 to connect to the premium soft strap heart rate monitor, which comes included when purchasing the FR70. The FR70 tracks your time, heart rate and calories burned, helping you stay motivated to accomplish your goals. Once your bootcamp session is done, the FR70 will automatically transfer data recorded from your workout to your computer wirelessly when in range so you can analyse it on www.garminconnect.com

The importance of training with a heart rate monitor? To reach your goals as quickly as possible and maintain them, it’s important to train efficiently but in order to do this you need to understand what your heart is doing. Your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) is the number of times your heart can contract in one minute. To calculate your MHR, a formula can be used however it would differ for men and women. For men, take the number 220 and minus your age, and for women, take the number 226 and minus your age. Once you have your MHR, break this figure down into zones which help determine where you need to keep your heart rate while training to achieve certain goals. The benefit of training with the FR70 is that you can load your personal heart rate zones onto the device and with a glance at your watch, know which zone you are in. The table below shows the different zones and what percentage your MHR should be whilst training, depending on your goals. The FR70 takes the guessing out of your workout, it really is the ‘no excuses training partner.’

Butter Beans with Tomato and Feta

This 'stew' makes for a wonderful bowl of food when spooned onto a bed of brown rice. If you're not a fan of rice, it is still perfect on its own!

What You Need: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp fresh oregano leaves, finely chopped 400g tin chopped tomatoes 30g flatleaf parsley, leaves finely chopped 1 tsp sea salt flakes plenty of freshly ground pepper

Method: Heat the olive oil in a medium pot and sauté the onion until softened but without colour. Add the garlic, bay leaves and oregano and cook, stirring, until the garlic is softened. Add the tomatoes, salt, pepper and half the parsley leaves and simmer for 15 minutes or until reduced and thickened. Add the beans and simmer for a few minutes more to warm through. Stir through parsley, crumble in the feta and serve immediately.

250g cooked butter beans (rinsed well and drained if from a tin) Serves 2 Per serving: 392 kJ, 11g fat, 15.2g carbs, 16.3g protein.

Morning Fruit Sandwich Perfect for on-the-go mornings, this breakfast sandwich is easy to make and even easier to enjoy...

What You Need: 1/3 tub light cream cheese 2 medium firm-ripe pears 3 tsp raisins 8 slices wholewheat cinnamon swirl bread, toasted (or four hot-cross buns, halved and toasted) or you can use rye bread or wholewheat bread of your choice.

Place a pear half cut side down on a cutting board and cut into thin lengthwise slices. Repeat with the other pear halves. In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese and raisins. Spread thinly on each slice of toast or bun. Top four of the bread or bun slices with pear slices and sandwich with the remaining four. Cut on the diagonal to serve.

Parsley &Thyme Chicken Marsala

The secret to turning this Italian classic into a slim meal is using chicken cutlets, which are thinner than breasts, so your dose of lean protein cooks faster and more evenly without drying out.

Method: In a shallow bowl, combine flours and pepper. Dredge chicken in mixture and set aside.Lightly coat a large, non-stick pan with cooking spray and heat on medium-high. Add chicken and sauté until lightly browned. Remove cutlets to a plate and keep warm. Add mushrooms and shallots to pan; stir for one to two minutes. Add wine/sherry to pan. Reduce to a glaze. Reduce heat and add stock, parsley and thyme. Stir; cook until stock reduces by half. Return chicken to pan and simmer for five minutes.

Before

Tracey and Genevieve battled it out for the remaining three months, each with a determination that left everyone around them in awe and completely inspired. The announcement of the winner was made on the 15th of September at our exclusive Schick ABC Gala Dinner, which took place at the Two Oceans Aquarium. The decision was based on who had made the most holistic lifestyle change and it was one of the hardest decisions the judges had to make. A very deserving Tracey Visscher won the title, after showing the most improvement. She decreased her weight and BMI by 8%, her body fat by almost 10% and her overall centimetres by 7.5%! As the winner of the Schick ABC Challenge, Tracey walked away with an envy-making amount of prizes, the grand prize being a R20 000 Schick Spa Getaway for two!

You can read their full blogs here! The mission of the Schick ABC Challenge was to turn 12 the unhealthy lifestyles of18three Cape Town ladies upside down. For three months, they had to attend three consecutive five days per week camps, visit a dietician (Kim Hofmann) and a Growth Coach (Megan Galloway) and open their lives up to the public so that everyone could follow their progress. Tracey Visscher, Genevieve Brook and Candice Le Noury were our 2012 contestants, each with very different stories to tell. Tracey was a devoted mother to three children but as a result of this, she had completely neglected herself and used her children as an excuse to not exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Genevieve was a single mother to a daughter she adored but she had experienced a huge amount of trauma – from being gang raped to overcoming a serious drug addiction. She used food as her ‘protection’, thinking that if she was overweight, nobody would touch her again. Our 3rd contestant Candice Le Noury, only completed the first half of the challenge due to ongoing shin splints.

Without our trainers, ABC wouldn’t be what it is today. They encourage, guide and motivate you throughout each camp, make each day exciting and different and celebrate just as wholeheartedly as you do when you achieve your goals. Many of you have developed very special friendships with your trainer which continues whether you feel like they are torturing you or not! Gauteng Adriaan Since I’ve started in Edenvale, I’ve met the most awesome campers. Not only have I motivated them, but very often was I motivated by their enthusiasm and positive attitudes. Most of all, thank you for making ABC Randburg my happy place! Chirene Wow! What an awesome year! So many ladies achieved so many things: 300 consecutive days, 30 camps, many, many dress sizes, kg and cms lost, many new friendships formed. We won the Best Spirit trophy! We came, we trained, we partied. 'Cause that's just how we roll. You ladies rock my world!

Dohme “Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle" - Christian D Larson. Ask yourself if what you're doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow! Fit and fabulous, at ABC, we don’t sweat, we glow! Genevieve This year we’ve all had our ups and downs. At camp we’ve shared our make-ups and break-ups, new jobs, weddings, babies, achieving new things, completing challenges, going places, writing exams. It’s so awesome to be able to share these lives and stories. For me, camp is not just where I work; it’s where I live. It’s a special meeting place of hearts and minds and the exercise, as good as it is, is just another part of our beautiful souls, finding expression in our LIVING. I freaking love my campers. My rock stars. Gracia Hello all my beautiful ladies! Thank you for not only an awesome year of training but for all the friendships/compassion/understanding/acceptance and most of all, the LOVE for each other! My most exciting time of the day is coming to camp! I love you all and am looking forward to next year!

Hayley Don’t give up – you can do it! Thank you for making every day so special and I’m looking forward to the next few years! Heidi I just want to thank all the Groenkloof campers for being so super special. In life you only have three choices - give up, give in or give it all you've got! Let's work together to always choose the latter! Hermien Words can’t describe how special each and every one of you are to me. I have met the most amazing people and developed many friendships. I thank you fromof the bottom of my heart for your dedication, commitment, loyalty and support during the years. I have so many special memories that I treasure. I will always give my best to you. May you have a wonderful, safe festive season and all the best for the New Year. Stefan and I will be with you every step of the way for 2013 and we hope to aid in your fitness goals

Johan After teaching in gyms for years, I thought those ladies were tough, but After teaching at ABC I learned that women are far tougher than men. I have never seen a group of women so motivated and focused in all of my years as a trainer. You give me hope and motivation for the future of ABC. Well done to everyone that completed the camps and pushed through the hard times with me. Khadija Thank you for your commitment and inspiration throughout this year. I have met some amazing women who I will always remember! I look forward to an awesome 2013 with all my SEXY bootycampers! “Wholesome exercise in the free air, under the wide sky, is the best medicine for body and spirit” Louise To all my amazing ladies, this has truly been the best and most fun year I have had in a long time. I have only done four camps but it has been the best four months ever. It is a privilege to work with such an exciting, positive, fun and professional group! To all my campers, thank you for all the laughter and fun! You have loads of willpower, great spirit and love!

Marlize 2012 was an incredible year! Each of you have made a difference in my life and made me realise how much I love what I do. I want to thank each and every lady who ever attended a camp class with me. Thank you for your friendship, love and dedication. I loved the proud moments when you realised just how much you had improved in a fitness assessment, the cm's and weight lost, the energy regained etc. I saw the pain on your faces when you were doing the last two push-ups, pushing yourself to the limit. I have the biggest admiration for you all! Michelle To my Houghton ladies, you have worked hard and played hard both on and off the field! Together, with your passion, spirit and commitment we have created awesomeness! Bring on 2013! xxx Pam Thank you for an awesome 2012. It is so encouraging to see women of all shapes and sizes and of different fitness levels dedicate themselves to what sometimes might seem torture, but overall is a fun way to exercise and lose weight. To my new campers: welcome to the 'family', and may 2013 bring reductions in waistlines and resting heart rates. We have new exciting things lined up for you! To my 'old faithful' gang - I'm looking forward to another fun-filled year with you all! Come on! You haven't plateaued yet! Let's kick 2013 in the teeth!

29

Roshni 2012 has been an amazing journey for my campers and me. The results that I have seen in many of my campers have been astonishing and an inspiration. Your dedication and hard work has certainly paid off by the way you look today. Always remember that results cannot be achieved short-term. It is all about patience, hard work, dedication and most of all, perseverance. Suret To my favourite campers, thank you so much for welcoming me into the group. I’ve enjoyed every second with you guys as “the new trainer”. I am looking forward to all the fun we will have together next year! Lots of love to you! Potchefstroom Nienie Everybody is special to me in their own unique way and you make each day at camp worthwhile for me. I get so much energy and laughter from you. It means so much to me when I can see that you are tired, but you still do exactly what I tell you to do, even if it takes the last bit of energy that you have. I love the expressions on your faces when you see your improvements on the last day of camp or when you suddenly are able to do an exercise that you could never do before. My message to you for 2013 is: Stay such a friendly group, strive to your ideals and give your all for the things that are good for you and the things that you believe in!

Western Cape Aimee ABC at Green Point Urban Park has been like those unexpected bacon bits in the salad bowl of life! We kept getting surprised by the beauty of our surroundings, the crazy weather and our own fitness improvements! Juli To all Paarl campers – THANK YOU for your amazing commitment & enthusiasm! You are the greatest bunch of EMIs for each other. You make me love my work! Miena ABC has changed my life. It is stimulating on a cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual level. I've laughed, cried, screamed, jumped, ran, hugged, read, researched, planned, created, talked and written more than ever. Even getting up early is a skill I've mastered ...but most importantly, being able to help, motivate and train the ladies of Somerset West - seeing them change mentally and physically and being rewarded with so much love, dedication and loyalty. THAT, is more precious than gold! Jo 2012 has been our fifth and best year yet at ABC Stellies! Thank you, loyal 'life time’ campers and rookies alike for your enthusiasm and commitment every day at camp! You help make my life so beautiful and rewarding. Simone What a great feeling when a camper cries tears of joy when she reaches her goal! Lee-Ann Is spending time on the beachfront watching the sunset really working?

Rico A big thank you to all my George campers for your ongoing support and for making 2012 an unforgettable year. Wherever you may be over this Festive Season, be safe and have fun. See you in 2013. Robyn What a crazy but exciting, successful year for the Kirstenbosch and St. Cyprians campers! The ladies definitely worked hard to get their 'Peachy Bums', making 'Project Bikini Body' a huge success! There were many pulses, laughs, death stares and sweat put into every camp session but it’s all worthwhile in the end! Rebecca 2012 has been a tough year for some, we have faced challenges that have tested abilities to cope with normal life, never mind achieving fitness goals. ABC is not only a platform for achieving fitness goals, but also a medium of collaborative support. Without trying, the mere presence of each unique woman in the group impacts on the other in a significant way. Let us not underestimate our strengths and our presence. Let us shine as individuals, as well as a unit! Janine Thank you all, campers and colleagues, family and friends! We have endured storms on and off the field but good friends have been the ray of light to break through and warm hearts give energy to run that extra mile. Let’s rock 2013! Shelley ABC 2012 has been an amazingly inspirational year with campers reaching goals of weight loss, half marathons, triathlons and personal achievements. It’s been absolute honour being a trainer.

30

Bonnita Waking up at the crack of dawn in the heart of winter is tough but with great sacrifice comes great reward. There is the pain of exercising or the pain of not exercising - you choose your pain. To all the woman who have camped throughout the year well done! Your body and muscles really appreciate you. Ilana The highlight of the year for me was when we finished our final assessment and one of the ladies said. “Yay, I’ve got my body back.” Inspiring! Jason It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. ABC has given me an extraordinary opportunity to be part of something very special. I have met and have been inspired by so many wonderful ladies this year and this has helped me push myself to become a better trainer. Our campers have given nothing less than their best which in turn makes our job as trainers an absolute pleasure. So, a gigantic well done to all of you! With that said, a huge thank you needs to go out to our office staff for all their kindness and support throughout the year. I would finally like to wish everyone well over this festive season and i’m looking so forward to an even better 2013. Lauren I have been wanting to get into the ABC 'family' for 4 years and now that I am part of this family, it has been even more amazing and exciting than I ever could have imagined. ABC is about fitness, fun and friendship and I feel lucky to be part of spreading that to all our campers and beyond.

31

Kerry Patience and perseverance is key. Hard work will pay off if you put in the time and effort! Lea This marks my fifth year at ABC and I never thought anything could beat my 6am at kirstenbosch, which was my daily meditation. However, the ladies that make up our WPPC team really have made this year rock. I've seen my ladies grow into strong, fit, toned, happy, determined return campers and the best things, it's only just starting for them. Together we share a passion for making our bodies the best tool to move with. But it's just as important to enjoy the challenging journey. I feel honoured and enriched from this year. Tracy 2012 at ABC was powerful! We said sad goodbyes that weren’t so easy to campers that we would not see for a while; goodbye to many calories and tons of fat! We said hello to stronger, leaner bodies; to powerful women that grew as people and to friendships that will last forever! Thank you ABC! Wendy-Joy My 2012 year at ABC has flown by and looking back, it is easy to see why as it was a year filled with fun and many memorable moments. While taking camp sessions, training and reviewing the trainers, facilitating the weekend running events, taking Custom Classes and participating in the camp sessions myself, I have shared in much laughter while working hard and getting fit alongside everyone. I continue to be inspired by the stories I hear from the ladies of the journeys that brought them to ABC and I look forward to another year being part of the team!
