Operation Stolen Cerberus VII: Giving back to Greek community Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs ATHENS, Greece — Even one small act of good can make a difference in another person’s life. Stolen Cerberus VII exercise participants came together Sep. 12 to donate school supplies and toys to a local orphanage in Athens, Greece. “We [always] try to do some community outreach to show our appreciation to the host country,” said Natalie Caballero, 37th Airlift

Squadron first sergeant. “It’s our way of giving back.” The move was spearheaded by members of 37th AS, who made contact with the U.S. Embassy in Greece looking for orphanages accepting donations, Caballero said. The orphanage that was selected, SOS Childrens’ Village Orphanage, is a branch of an international organization with the same name dedicated to fostering children. Page 2 FEAT RECOGNIZED from Page 1 the U.S. Air Force in operations during the Vietnam War, Cold War and Desert Storm. This particular aircraft, tail number 68-0554, now on display at the Northside Fitness Center traffic circle, spent its entire operational life with units assigned to U.S. Air Forces in Europe. “The aircraft you can see here, was decommissioned in 1991, sitting in an old French shelter on the southwest side of the base with only a few people aware of its existence,” said Andreas H. May, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron chief engineer. In 2015, May talked to the USAFE historian about an idea to restore and display the RF-4C. A year later, May and the historian, along with the 86th Maintenance Squadron, developed a decision brief for the 86th AW commander, outlining a refurbishment plan. “On the engineering side, I took a personal interest and started working on the design for the foundation and stands, structural calculation, programming and certainly the budget for the construction project,” May said. Once the aircraft was moved to an 86th MXG compound, work on the restoration requirements and technical details of the aircraft’s color scheme and tail markings commenced. “The MXG team did an amazing job and was very well coordinated,” said Staff Sgt. Jordan Smith, 86th MXS aircraft structural maintenance craftsman and a key player in painting the restored aircraft. “Structural maintenance did a lot of the refurbishment and (demilitarization) of the aircraft. Metals Tech made some parts for putting in the augmenters in the back for the exhaust, which I then installed within the aircraft. The biggest portion was Air Repair when they towed the aircraft and assisted the outside company with lifting it into position.” Five years later, after more than 100 volunteers spent countless hours on the aircraft’s demilitarization, removal of explosives, emptying of the fuel

tanks and hydraulics systems, cleaning, restoration and relocation, the project was completed. “The efforts of this hundredplus that worked on this whole project, made it come to reality,” said Michael Edwards, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa deputy senior political advisor and prior RF-4C weapons system officer. “Your efforts restored this aircraft back to its glory days. It’s a testament to your dedication and your professionalism, to preserve an important part of Air Force and USAFE history and heritage.” Thanks to the tireless efforts of the 86th MXG and 86th CEG, the RF-4C, a piece of Ramstein heritage and historic monument in both German and American communities, will not be forgotten and can be observed and appreciated for years to come.

cerns, the Airmen were not able to meet the children directly. More than 700 items were donated to the facility, including backpacks, colored pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, sports balls, glue and other items. “The entire 37th AS donated,” Caballero said. “A lot of spouses got involved and they were very excited to be a part of something cool.” Caballero believes that donating to charitable organizations is important because it reinforces the true value of Flying Training Deployment: community. “We’re building partnerships,” Caballero said. Chief Master Sgt. Marc Gonsalves, 37th AS chief enlisted manager, also emphasized the value of community and how these acts can have lasting implications with an anecdotal story about the origins of his aunt’s entry into the U.S. Air Force. “She always had this strong support for the U.S. and the military,” Gonsalves explained. “A cou-

ple of years ago I said, ‘Hey Aunt Evelyn, where does this passion come from?” Evelyn explained that as a child on Terceira Island, Azores, Airmen from Lajes Field would dress up as Santa Claus every Christmas and drive from village to village handing out candy to local children. “During that time, they had so little that my aunt was worried the candy would be taken away by her grandmother, that it would be seen as this thing of excess,” Gonsalves recalled. That one act shaped her entire worldview of what it meant to be an American and a member of the U.S. military, Gonsalves said. “I like to think that those people dressing up as Santa Claus every year thought it was a small thing,” Gonsalves said. “They probably never realized the impact it made for that little girl in the Azores. It was something she’ll never forget for her entire life.” Caballero said that they have plans to continue to donate in future FTDs, including Operation Stolen Cerberus VIII.

86 MXS Airman demonstrates leadership, management excellence

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Zachary R. Tingen, 86th Maintenance Squadron programs manager, poses for a photo at a multi-use maintenance facility, one of four construction projects he has overseen at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 9. Tingen’s facility construction project efforts resulted in the fusion of three flights into a 56,000 square foot hangar, increasing C-130J Super Hercules aircraft letter check manpower by 65%.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class John R. Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An 86th Maintenance Squadron Airman was awarded Airlifter of the Week for his leadership and management excellence at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 27. Staff Sgt. Zachary R. Tingen, 86th MXS programs manager, exceeded duty expectations by fulfilling multiple leadership roles to include commander support staff, unit airfield driving manager, squadron vehicle control officer, unit facility manager and unit safety representative. “He’s taken over a lot of big programs, and he’s been knocking it out of the park for a lot of high visibility projects,” said Master Sgt. Israel Morales, 86th MXS CSS flight chief. Tingen is no stranger to Airlifter of the Week, as he previously won the award in July 2019 for his exemplary work in aircraft fuel systems. Working in a new position as the squadron programs manager, Tingen’s leadership nominated him for the award again because he has continued to excel while taking on more leadership roles and responsibilities. “Staff Sgt. Tingen worked tirelessly as the unit facility manager, overseeing four facility construction projects, and constructed a seven-phase merger strategy for the 86th Maintenance Group,” Morales said. Tingen’s efforts fused three flights into a 56,000 square foot hangar, increasing C-130J Super Hercules aircraft letter check manpower by 65%. “Instead of having to call them and have them drive down to come look at something, everybody’s in the (same) building,” Tingen said. “And they’re getting cross utilization training to do things outside of their Air Force specialty code.” Another accomplishment for

which Tingen was recognized was leading a 25-member team during the annual wing safety inspection of the 86th MXS, which resulted in zero major findings. Leading up to the inspection, internal checks were performed on 14 different facilities, Tingen said. His findings were recorded in a quarterly report to ensure flight safety representatives were prepared for Wing Safety. Amid all the recognition for his professional accomplishments, Tingen took time to acknowledge the support his leadership provides. “They know all of us on a personal level,” Tingen said. “Anytime we need their help with something, they have an open door.” When Tingen, an Apex, North Carolina, native, isn’t managing multiple programs in the 86th MXS, he enjoys traveling with his wife and three kids, and playing sports and video games. Airmen like Tingen, who go above and beyond the basic responsibilities of their position and proactively pursue professional development, are what makes this the World’s Best Wing.

Most are junior enlisted troops heading to their first assignment and have never been overseas before. Marable is one of roughly 60 Reserve Soldiers from the 7th Mission Support Command, a U.S. Army Reserve unit headquartered at Kaiserslautern’s Daenner Kaserne, who spent this summer caring for new arrivals during a 14-day lockdown designed to reduce the spread of the virus. “I try to be there for them as much as I can,” said Marable, a Opening Hours: Mon– Fri 9.30 –19.00 Sat 9.30 –18.00 Special arrangements possible

human resources specialist with the 83rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. “If they need someone, they come and get me.” Like most Reserve Soldiers, Marable brings civilian skills to his job. When not in uniform, he is a personnel specialist in Baumholder. He’s often used his connections, plus a deep knoweldge of German culture and the local area, to help new Soldiers adjust. “If I see somebody who is struggling, I will tell them what I know and about the pitfalls I had to endure so they don’t have to themselves,” Marable said. For two weeks, while transient Soldiers are under a “restriction of movement,” large open warehouses are their home. They take online training, stay in shape with physical fitness sessions and hang out at the USO. play video games or cards, or use free WiFi to call home. “The cadre are treating us pretty good,” said Staff Sgt. Kendall Eason, a St. Petersburg, Florida native starting his second tour in Germany. “The USO also supplies tons of stuff, and I didn’t expect that, so it is a plus.” Soldiers are tested upon arrival. Ten days later, they undergo a followup test. Any Soldier who presents symptoms or tests positive is brought to a separate facility and cared for by medical professionals. Trace teams contact anyone who was close to that Soldier. They are then separated and monitored. Soldiers with families, plus senior enlisted and officers, are housed in other locations at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, where their movement is also restricted. Measures to limit COVID19 transmission are in accordance with German regulations and in some cases stricter than off-post. The local German press recently reported how impressed host nation officials were with the high stan-

dard of the U.S. military’s COVID-19 restrictions. Most Soldiers arrive at nearby Ramstein Air Base then travel by bus to ROB. Awaiting word on their initial COVID-19 test is their first task. “The first three days, you are not cleared until you get your test results back,” Eason said. “After you get your test results back, that is when you start classes, be able to do laundry and get marched to the shoppette.” Begun in March as a cooperative effort between the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and USAGRP, the task force has since cared for thousands of Soldiers. In June, Reserve Soldiers from the 7th MSC stepped in. At the end of September, the 21st TSC’s Special Troops Battalion will continue the mission. “I thought we were going to be quarantined in our quarters at our unit,” said Sgt. Joshua Cueno, who is joining the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion in Baumholder. “I was a little unprepared for that.

I know some of the other guys were too.” Cueno, a signal non-commissioned officer from San Diego who previously served in Iraq, said some transient Soldiers arrived without important personal items, to include towels. Task Force staff and the USO stepped in. “They had some extra supplies, so some of the guys were able to get toiletries and stuff like that,” Cueno said. Protecting DOD personnel is a top priority, according to Defense Secretary Mark Esper. In U.S. Army Europe, unaccompanied Soldiers heading into barracks could potentially spread COVID-19 and affect readiness. Therefore, it was important for the Army to build a program that cares for incoming Soldiers and protects the force. “People are the most important when it comes to combatting this pandemic,” said Lt. Col. Andrea Talbert, 83rd CSSB commander, who has led TF-Willkommen since July. “It’s our honor and our duty to care for incoming personnel while protecting the force and the people in our host nation.” More than 1,400 Soldiers completed the two-week cycle since July. Afterward, they move to units across Germany, ready to support Army missions, Talbert said. “We are very dedicated and proud to support our active duty counterparts,” Talbert said. “By doing this here, receiving units can remain focused on their missions and not worry about COVID-19 in their formations.”

- das Bier der Pfalz INTRODUCING: Schnorres Your Local Micro Craft Beer Brewery

When in Germany, drink beer, right?! Did you know that there’s a micro brewery in the heart of the KMC? That’s correct! Schnorres Brauerei is located in Mehlingen and they brew their very own craft beer — THE beer of the Palatinate. Schnorres was founded by two local college students that had the goal to break the record and become the smallest craft beer brewery in Germany by setting up shop in their grandma’s basement. Things went so well so fast, that they decided they needed to look for

a new place. Taking over an old butcher shop in Mehlingen seemed like the perfect setup and location for the young owners who grew up in the area. Martin and Marcel have created a unique atmosphere in the old butcher shop with a large bar and all of the available Schnorres beers on tap. The tables to sit and stand at are made from wooden pallets. There's also seating available in a small inner courtyard. In the back of the building is where the magic happens with all of the necessary equipment —

brewing kettles, fermenting barrels, a large, ice-cold storage room and more. Keep in mind, it is called micro for a reason. You certainly cannot compare it to a large American brewery or one of the leading German ones, but the small size surely does not compromise the quality or flavor in any way! Over the past six years the name Schnorres has become a reputable brand and icon appealing to beer lovers of all ages — especially to those with a mustache, because that’s what the name stands for. pants to be coordinated in how they apply tactics, techniques and procedures across national borders. “Regular training and cooperation with our regional Allies and partners is essential to ensure we have an effective force in place to safeguard the Baltic Region,” said Allied Air Command Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Andrew Hansen. “I am confident that this will be another successful hands-on training event here in the Baltic States,” he added. All players were highly focused on the training. In addition to their exercise involvement German Air Force fighters were scrambled by Combined Air Operations Centre Uedem to launch for a real-world NATO Air Policing mission, meeting and escorting a formation of Russian military aircraft flying over international waters off the Baltic Allies’ coast. The first day of exercise Ramstein Alloy offered all participants worthwhile training to increase the level of professionalism and cooperation. Day two added a NATO Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft to the players’ list. The AWACS aircraft is scheduled to control manoeuvres of multiple fighter aircraft and to conduct a flyover of Tallinn in the afternoon on its way home to Germany.

Until next time, Greece: Stolen Cerberus VII concludes

An Airman assigned to the 86th Maintenance Squadron marshals a C-130J Super Hercules to its spot at Elefsis Air Base, Greece, during Operation Stolen Cerberus VII, Sept. 14. Airmen and C-130s assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing participated in a bilateral training event with Hellenic armed forces from Sept. 8-20.

said Master Sgt. Natalie Caballero, 37th AS first sergeant. “Whether it’s public affairs or maintenance or the port dogs. Even the tiniest job has a huge impact. Without one, it will never work.” Another important aspect of forward total deployments is building partner capacity with Greece. Multiple units from the Hellenic armed forces supported the exercise, including the 865th Aerial Delivery Battalion and the 31st Search and Rescue Squadron. “They treated us like family,” said Capt. John Hopkins, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot and Stolen

ELEFSIS AIR BASE, Greece — Stolen Cerberus VII, a two-week bilateral training deployment between the U.S. and Hellenic armed forces, ended Sept. 20. “It’s been absolutely phenomenal to see everybody work together with a common goal,” said Chief Master Sgt. Marc Gonsalves, 37th Airlift Squadron chief enlisted manager. More than 100 U.S. personnel supported the event, including

Ramstein Airmen from the 37th AS, 86th Maintenance Squadron, the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and the 4th Air Support Operations Group, as well as Airmen from the 57th Rescue Squadron from Aviano Air Base, Italy. Exercise participants came together as one during this twoweek journey, learning about each other, their host nation, and how their job contributes to the mission away from home. “The biggest thing I learned was that each Airman is a huge piece in the whole operation,”

Cerberus VII mission commander. “The relationships were what made this (exercise) great to be on. Hopefully we made some lifetime friends.” Together, the U.S. Air Force and the Hellenic armed forces accomplished many objectives, such as a distinguished visitor flight with the U.S. ambassador to the Hellenic Republic, Geoffrey R. Pyatt, and Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros. The flight also involved a four-ship maneuver with three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and one Hellenic

C-130H successfully flying over Athens, Greece. The U.S. Air Force also successfully deployed multiple low cost, low altitude and high velocity container delivery system airdrops, and paratroopers from both countries performed jumps from aircraft for certification. One of the new challenges participants had to face during Stolen Cerberus VII was COVID-19. Host nation guidelines required each member to test negative for the virus before entering the country. “Our medical team did a great job of coming together and getting everybody tested,” said Maj. Michael Bakke, Stolen Cerberus VII detachment commander. Stolen Cerberus is an annual exercise, and leadership is already looking at ways the exercise can be improved next year. “Our schedule was a little too jam-packed,” Bakke said. “We need to space out operations to be a little more efficient.” Overall, Hopkins is proud of what the team accomplished. “Thanks to everyone who made this a success,” Hopkins said. “Whether they were able to be out here in person or even if they were coordinating in an email, it’s taken a huge amount of effort from too many (places) to count.”

mission against targets and in support of commanders of ground units. Ample Strike 2020 was focused on the conduct of combined air operations in accordance with NATO standards. This placed greater demands on the joint planning of ground and air elements to ensure effective coordination of manoeuvre and fire and achieve the desired outcome. Twelve JTAC teams from six NATO members conducted more than 800 successful control missions during nine exercise days. Allied aircraft crews performed 265 flights totalling more than 370 flight hours. Ample Strike 2020 took place enabled by 23 helicopters and aircraft and 130 pieces of ground equipment. Mi-24 attack helicopters and Mi-171 transport helicopters from 22nd Helicopter Air Base at Namest nad Oslavou were most involved transporting personnel and materiel to the various training sites. Czech JAS-39 and L-159 fighter jets, tactical German Eurofighter and Tornado aircraft as well as Slovak Mi-17 helicopters integrated their firepower with ground mortars. Significant support was also drawn from German PC-9 Pilatus and LJ-35 Learjet training aircraft based at Namest, and the U.S. Army MQ-9 Reaper drone, which flew in from a military base in Poland. Multinational air-to-air refuelling of JAS-39 fighters and a U.S. Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft rounded off the training activities.

Continued from front page of Properties section Saving energy also means saving money. Here’s some information that helps you to save energy: • Install and set a programmable thermostat: Save an estimated 10% per year on heating costs by using a programmable thermostat. • Use sunlight to your advantage: Choose window treatments that allow you to use natural light while reducing heat loss and gain. • Switch to Energy Star or European Union energy label electronics: Using certified products throughout your home could save energy and money.

• Choose energy saving lighting: Replacing your most frequently used lights with energy efficient lights or LEDs. • Reduce energy for water heating: You can lower your water heater’s temperature to a minimum of 60°C and still be safe. • Caulk air leaks: Using low-cost caulk to seal cracks and openings in your home keeps warm air out and cash in your wallet. • Contact a professional home performance specialist from your utility company. These professionals will do a comprehensive audit of your whole house using special tools to measure your home energy efficiency.

Planning is key for emergency, disaster preparedness

Graphic by The Creative Guy / Shutterstock.com

by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs September is Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Month. The emergency managers of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz help ensure the community is well informed and ready for any crisis that could threaten the garrison and the surrounding area. These threats could be natural or manufactured incidents and can cause an adverse impact to our military community. “They can strike at any time, with or without warning,” said Ashley Bryles, USAG RheinlandPfalz emergency manager. “So, it is imperative for all of us to be prepared to respond to, and recover from, any of these threats as quickly as possible.” Aside from the ongoing pandemic, the most likely threats to our community include flooding, high winds, demonstrations or protests, terrorist activities, cyber-attacks, fires, earthquakes, snow and ice storms, and insider threats, according to Bryles. The emergency managers said being informed, having supplies on hand and having a plan are the keys to being prepared. “The Federal Emergency Management Agency has an entire site dedicated to education and preparedness,” said Terry Dunlap, garrison anti-terrorism officer. The FEMA site is www.Ready.gov.

“In conjunction, the Army has created ReadyArmy.gov, for military personnel and their families. Both of these sites provide the necessary tools to help reduce our community vulnerability to both natural and man-made disasters,” Dunlap said. In addition, those programs provide members with resources to prepare their households before, during, and after a disaster, he added. Experts say, at a minimum, everyone should have the basic supplies and keep them in an easy-to-carry tote that can be used at home or carried in the event of evacuation. “Planning for the unexpected begins with the whole family talking about what to do in a serious emergency,” Bryles said. “Have a conversation in a calm way that will not make children or older relatives anxious. Make it fun, but discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies that are most likely to happen where you live, learn, work and play.” Bryles added families need to identify responsibilities for each member of the household and plan to work together as a team. Plan what to do in the event family members are separated at the start of an incident or during an evacuation.

Another way families can stay alert and informed is by registering for the ALERT! System, the garrison mass warning and notification system, which provides real-time warning and updates for the garrison population via desktop pop-up messages, text messages, email, and telephone calls. The system is only used for emergency notification but comes in handy during inclement weather when the roads are dangerous or closed, Dunlap said. For more information on how to register for the “ALERT! Mass Warning Notification System” please click https://home.army. mil/rheinland-pfalz/application/files/6416/0043/6653/ ALERT_Registration_Slides.pdf

“Every region is unique. Knowing the type of disasters likely to occur in your specific community increases a swift response,” Bryles said. “We must all work together for a quick and more seamless transition back to normalcy after any event.” To help prepare for an unexpected event, the Emergency Management community recommends:

Beginning Jan. 1, uniformed members are expected to test on the 1.5 mile run, 1 minute of push-ups and 1 minute of sit-ups. The body composition component (abdominal circumference), height and weight measurements are postponed until further notice. All members, including those with abdominal circumference exemptions, will receive maximum points for the AC component as part of their official score. “This is an unprecedented situation and we’ve put a lot of work into assessing how and when we could safely resume fitness testing across the force,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “People have been juggling work, child-care issues, homeschooling, family separations, isolation, etc., and we know it’s been more challenging to maintain fitness. This delay gives our folks extra time to prepare for January, while also ensuring units have more time to implement additional COVID precautions.” “We’re also aware our

resumption occurs right after the annual holiday season that can be challenging for people’s fitness,” Kelly said. “Hopefully this change removes some of the stress caused by the waist measurement, and gives us all a chance to start our New Year’s readiness and fitness resolutions on the right foot.” Fitness assessment due dates in 2021 will primarily depend on the date and score of the last official test. Airmen and Space Professionals may determine their next fitness assessment due date by visiting the Official Physical Assessment Due Date Matrix on myPers. “This transition requires a careful and systematic approach,” Kelly said. “Our goal is to begin testing where it makes sense, but also give commanders the needed tools and flexibility to make decisions that make sense for their locations and their people.” Fitness assessment cells, fitness center staff, physical training leaders and members performing fitness assessments will adhere to

physical distancing protocols and other local precautions as determined by installation commanders. Commanders may delay official fitness assessments beyond Jan. 1, 2021, based on the recommendation of local public health officials, the continuation of closed fitness centers and extended state-wide restriction of movement and gatherings. “We’re also taking advantage of this additional time to look at the long-term plan for the abdominal circumference component,” Kelly said. “We’re in discussion with our medical counterparts to determine the right place for the waist measurement, whether it be part of an annual health assessment or elsewhere. This is a great opportunity to make lasting changes that will improve our fitness culture.” For more information, Airmen and Space Professionals should contact their fitness assessment cells and visit the COVID19 Fitness Guidance page on myPers.

Become an adventurer at Gondwana Prähistorium by MilitaryinGermany.com “That wasn’t a museum. That was an adventure,” were my friend’s first words when we left. And it really was an adventure. Gondwana — Das Prähistorium, which is located in Schiffweiler, is an immersive experience that sums up the history of the world in an action-packed and educational day trip that visitors of all ages will never forget. In a way, it’s like taking a trip around the world, except all inhabitants are, well, extinct. More theme park than museum The museum is basically a 10,000-square meter indoor theme park that invites you to dive into an experience you won’t find anywhere else. The circular tour is separated, to put it simply and un-scientifically, into three different eras: pre-dinosaurs, dinosaurs and post-dinosaurs. Each section contains a 3D or 4D movie, and you will be astounded by their elaborate set decorations: you’ll be plunged into a cave, an animated aquarium, a canyon, an actual waterfall, a tropical rainforest, a snowy winter wonderland, a desert and so much more. It was so incredible that now, I can’t remember my life PTT (Pre Time Travel). During non-COVID times, English audio guides are available to translate every show and poster. Dinosaurs brought (almost) to life…and death Once you’ve made it to what I’d like to call a real-life Jurassic Park, you may need to have The Talk with your children. You know, the one where you reassure them that dinosaurs are actually dead because the life-sized animatronic figures look so creepily real. I’ll be honest: the great T-Rex’s roar triggered a few tears from little adventurers around us. A spectacular 4D movie concludes the gigantic creatures’ astounding lives and unfortunate end. “The world’s biggest dino show” will have you on the edge of your tree trunk seat when a lifesized T-Rex confronts his enemy, which happens to be three times as big, trying to protect his little ones. Who will win? There’s only one way to find out! Amazing journey through time The journey through time is my personal favorite. Thanks to a special time traveling device, visitors can get a glimpse at the complete history of humans. You start

in a spaceship in 2005, make your way to an industrially revolutionized England, continue to South America around 1540, go on to witness medieval German misery, discover old Egyptian pharaohs, marvel at life during the early bronze age, encounter a frosty mammoth and walk all the way to when we still looked more like monkeys than humans, circa 47 million years B.C. Every hall is designed with attention to detail. Educational posters give more information on the respective time zone in which you’re standing, and photo ops make sure this trip does not remain undocumented in your family album. Fun for all ages We had no idea what to expect when we showed up – two adults in a kids’ museum? But we absolutely loved it. There is much to learn and even more to discover. We would have probably spent the

whole day there if we had tried to see every beautiful detail. The recommended age is 6+. While you may have younger children who love dinosaurs and history, be forewarned: it is rather dark in the museum and the sound effects are quite realistic (and occasionally terrifying, in a good way). While there are a number of ‘Achtung’ signs upon entering each theme, all of which should be respected, I was happy to find that no actors jump out at you unannounced because I tend to scream very loudly and inconvenience my fellow visitors that way. Still, if you don’t know if you should spend your rainy/ sunny/ windy/ hot/ cold day at the zoo, museum, movie theatre, playground or across the globe, remember that Godwana’s got it all, regardless of the weather. After your safari you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a variety of snacks at their café. Under

ordinary circumstances, those who still crave more action can visit an indoor adventure playground: however, the playground is currently closed due to COVID restrictions. Getting there and access information The museum is in Schiffweiler, which is less than a 40-minute drive from the KMC, approximately 1.5 hours from Wiesbaden and 2.5 hours from Stuttgart. Admission costs €23 per adult, including all 3 movies. Kids between 5 and 17 cost €17. Children under 4 get in for free. It’s not cheap but definitely worth

it given the broad variety of media used to make history as interesting and touchable as possible. Military ID holders receive a 10% discount on all tickets. Every first Friday of the month, there’s a 20% discount on family tickets for military personnel families. Free parking is available on site. Gondwana — Das Prähistorium is open every day of the week almost all through the year. Please check their official website for more details. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz named best garrison in Europe

Ariana Oregel, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Exceptional Family Member Program director (left) and Kelley Hood, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz EFMP program systems navigator, discuss EFMP programs with a military family member at a recent outreach event at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center.

Story and photos by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs United States Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is the best garrison in Europe. Five installations, one from each directorate of the Installation Management Command, have been named IMCOM Directorates Best Garrison 2019, with USAG Rheinland-Pfalz selected for Europe. “It doesn’t surprise me at all,” said USAG RP commander Col. Vance Klosinski. “In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve been very impressed with the attitude, caring and work ethic of the entire garrison team.” The scoring was based on criteria in 13 categories for an installation’s Fiscal Year 2019: mission support, energy, quality of life, unit morale, environment, real property asset management, real property stewardship, competitive activities, communication, safety and health, security, public relations and other awards won. According to the IMCOM announcement, USAG RheinlandPfalz achieved a 94% customer service rating from the community despite the high-risk staffing levels. The garrison has made improvements with its energy consumption, saving a total of $380,000 annually. USAG RP also has a large volunteer program that recorded 32,000 volunteer hours during FY19. Volunteers helped with activities like outdoor adventure programs and community-wide sports tournaments. “I am proud of all that the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

continues to do for our Soldiers, families, civilians and Retirees, and they are truly deserving of this honor,” said Installation Management Command-Europe Director Tommy Mize. “Every day, their entire garrison team, across all directorates and staffs, delivers the best services and infrastructure our military community deserves. They are a model garrison with an excellent, dedicated staff, and I congratulate and thank the whole team.” USAG RP has the largest Army footprint in Europe. The Kaiserslautern-headquartered garrison is responsible for 31 installations and sites that stretch nearly 100 miles across Germany, encompassing Baumholder, Miesau, Landstuhl, Sembach, Mannheim, Grunestadt and Germersheim, as well as smaller sites. The garrison also has administrative control over sites in Romania and Bulgaria. “The directorates work closely

with each other, which supports clear communication and effective problem resolution,” said Gary Burton, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation director. “When you have great processes, great people and great attitudes, you have the perfect recipe to achieve great results.” Since the nomination packet was submitted, other improvements have been made across the garrison such as; hiring additional employees to fill critical positions, purchasing new emergency equipment and apparatus for the fire department, and securing funding for sun shades and balconies in Army Family Housing in Baumholder. “The garrison agency doesn’t matter,” said Charm Sutton, Baumholder Army Family Housing Customer Service chief. “Day in and day out, you get to witness small glimmers of greatness. Regular people who

go above and beyond for other people just because it’ll make someone’s day.” “USAG RP excels in communicating with military members and their families to ensure everyone is well-informed,” added Yancy Chandler, USAG RP Directorate of Resource Management manpower branch. “They offer virtual town hall meetings which are accessible online in real time and after the event in case we have questions.” “The command team and directors let supervisors lead their teams. There’s no micromanagement,” said Ivor Watson, Military Personnel Division chief. “I feel the garrison as a whole provides quality and timely services in spite of the challenge of doing so across the largest garrison footprint in the theater.” Using the same criteria, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz placed third in the worldwide Army competition.

The other four IMCOM garrisons recognized were USAG Fort Drum from ID-Readiness, USAG Hawaii from ID-Pacific, USAG Fort Huachuca from ID-Training and USAG Rock Island Arsenal from ID-Sustainment. “USAG RP employees genuinely care about what they are doing and who they do it for,” said Greg Williams, Directorate of Public Works director. “To them, it’s more than a job, it’s a passion.” In a message to the garrison workforce this week on the announcement, Dr. Kevin Griess, deputy to the garrison commander, praised the efforts that led to the recognition: “This is a direct result of your individual and combined efforts and the exceptional teamwork we have here. We should all be incredibly proud of this award because it tells the rest of the Army what we already know: from top to bottom we have the best team in Europe.”

Page 20 by MilitaryinGermany.com Heidelberg is obvious and surprising all at the same time – which is one of the best combinations that travelers can hope for. Once you hit the city, its beauty is evident. Steep wooded hills rise from both sides of the Neckar River. A world-class castle ruin looms above an architecturally rich old town. The city center hums with youthful university-town energy. And yet, Heidelberg only gets more rewarding as you start to explore it. Dig in, and you’ll find journeys within journeys. For day trippers, this means a chance for incredible experiences in a short amount of time. Why Heidelberg? Heidelberg is excellent for new arrivals to Germany and for grizzled travel veterans. In fact, it’s a town that is perfectly suited for repeat day trips. Why? Let’s count the ways. • Heidelberg castle is epic – especially if you choose to hike the steep stone ramp up to the entrance. Even if you take the steps or funicular, it still feels like you’re conquering a mountain. Once inside the castle, the sense of largeness continues. There’s a massive vat that was

September 25, 2020

Can’t-miss German day trips A-Z: Heidelberg

once used for collecting wine taxes, and there are long, dizzying drops over thick, sheer castle walls. Best of all, though, are the views found from the castle gardens. • Everything is within walking distance. Deep breath. Heidelberg has museums, markets, shopping, restaurants, book stores, coffee shops, an

amazing old bridge, reasonable parking, a river walk, historic churches, a lovely Jewish memorial, a thriving marktplatz, and a dizzying array of off-the-beatenpath photo ops. And you can walk to all of these things. • Seasons matter. Heidelberg looks and feels different depending on when you’re there. Autumn means changing trees

and university students treating a centuries-old town like it was young again. Winter means a sense of profound stillness once you push beyond the lively city center. Spring and summer bring riotous amounts of green and floral colors. Pick a season, then go. Then wait six months, and try it again. You won’t be disappointed.

The one thing you have to see: Heidelberg Castle…from a distance Heidelberg Castle is like a giant magnet that attracts visitors. You see it, and you can’t help thinking, “I want to go there right this instant.” And you should! But one of the rarest and best treats in Heidelberg is the view of the castle from the other side of the Neckar River. Leave the old town behind. Cross the famous Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), and begin to climb the famous Philosopher’s Way as night falls. Move slowly up the steep path. Then stop, turn, and marvel at the castle (and the town) in all its welllighted glory. Give yourself at least five minutes to bask in the view. And then you’ll understand why the path you just walked was named for philosophers. Getting there By car, Heidelberg is about an hour from Kaiserslautern, just over an hour from Wiesbaden and approximately 90 minutes from Stuttgart. Check the DB website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies, when it comes to travel.
