Ramstein recognizes National POW/MIA Day Story and photos by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of Ramstein Air Base came together at the Ramstein Officers’ Club for a luncheon and wreath laying ceremony to observe National Prisoners Of War/Missing In Action Recognition Day on Sept. 15. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September each year and, though first recognized in 1979, the observance was established under the 1998 Defense Authorization Act. While attending the luncheon, retired Air Force Col. Kenneth Cordier, a former Vietnam prisoner of war (1966 to 1973), addressed the audience about his days as a former POW. “I was a prisoner for 2,284 days,” said Cordier. “During that time we were treated harshly. The one thing that got me through was my faith. My faith in God, my faith in my fellow prisoners, and my faith in my country.” See WARRIORS, Page 2

Matthew Villella, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing vice commander, place the POW/MIA memorial wreath Sept. 15 on Ramstein’s River Rats memorial. According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, there are no more than 82,000 military members unaccounted for from past conflicts, 1,600 from Vietnam alone.

Airmen assigned to the 21st Operational Weather Squadron held the first Warfighter Weather Conference, Sept. 14 to 16, on Kapaun Air Station. Thirty-three units assigned to several combatant commands, NATO partners, and sister services attended the conference with the intent to educate and network between operators and leadership in support of the warfighter. “Networking, a big thing about this conference is networking,” said 2nd Lt. Matthew Wetmore, 21st OWS assistant

flight commander. “How can we help our customers out and how can we help each other out to better support the mission.” Throughout the conference the service members broke down their unit’s respective areas of responsibility, capabilities, and duties for a clear understanding of each unit’s role in supporting the warfighter. “It was very useful to listen to all the different briefs and what the different units do to help the warfighter,” said Wetmore. “It helps us understand what each units does better, so if I do have an issue, I know exactly who I need to talk to.” The efforts made during the Warfighter Weather Conference are projected to

increase productivity and mission efficiency through the relationships made and the capabilities that coincide. “I think it’s going to be immensely more efficient,” said Wetmore. “The thing about this conference is it’s an open house, so they can just come down and talk to the forecasters who actually forecast for their base. This allows them to talk about their processes and procedures which strengthens relationships, so you actually know the other person on the end of the phone and how they operate.” By understanding each unit’s specific role in supporting the warfighter, weather services are able to ensure success while

After his homecoming, he continued to serve 12 more years. He retired and held positions in multiple veteran and POW/MIA organizations. Cordier explained what it’s like for him to attend POW/MIA events. “It’s difficult for me, at these events, to embrace and absorb that I’m part of the group being recognized, to realize I’m part of the focus,” said Cordier. “There was very little publicity for POW/MIAs when we were released in 1973. Since 9/11, there has been a lot more visibility.” With increased visibility of the POW/MIAs over the years, military members have acknowledged the significance of remembering them and what they gave for freedom. “It’s important that we take this unique opportunity to gather everyone and (honor) our POW/MIAs,” said Senior Master Sgt. Robert Ybay, 1st Combat Communications Squadron cyber transport systems flight chief. “I think it was best said by the commander during the POW/MIA Memorial Run earlier this week, ‘Be glad you can run in the rain to exercise your freedom.’” During POW/MIA Recognition Week, Cordier visited different units

A military spouse from the Kaiserslautern Military Com munity won the 86th Force Support Squadron Continuous Process Improvement office and Innovation Program logo contest held from July 10 to Aug. 10. The contest involved com bining the idea of innovation with the 86th Airlift Wing into a single logo. “We needed a way to market and build brand equity while getting our program informa tion out there, because it is very difficult to communicate with such a large wing,” said Rebecca Porinsky, 86th FSS CPI wing process manager. “We thought that by coming up with a logo, we could help associate our information with our program and hopefully generate some excitement with a cool looking logo.” The 86th FSS CPI office and Innovation Program is respon sible for streamlining and reduc ing waste in Air Force processes while increasing operational capabilities using proven tech niques associated with fulfilling the Air Force mission. “As soon as I read the advertisement in the newspa per, I immediately got ideas,” said Sabine Allen, graphic designer. “I researched the 86th AW because I didn’t know anything about it or the CPI and Innovation Program. Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein welcomed a new canine candidate to its 86th Security Forces Squadron military working dog team. Orca is a two-year-old German shepherd who is currently being evaluated to see if he has what it takes to become a permanent team member at Ramstein. Not just any dog can work for the U.S. Air Force. MWDs and their handlers stand the ground between a base and outside danger. They must have an incredible bond with their handler to detect explosive threats and protect against physical aggressors before threats turn in to casualties. To become an MWD, a dog has to be extraordinary. To make the team at Ramstein, Orca must demonstrate his abilities. He is trained to sniff for certain chemicals used in explosives and show Staff Sgt. Steven Barnum, 86th SFS MWD handler, where they are coming from so that 86th SFS personnel can secure the area. He must also be prepared to neutralize aggressors, including individuals running, yelling and wielding deadly weapons. According to Tech. Sgt. Lance Oaks, 86th SFS kennel master, MWDs are the Air Force’s best explosives assets. “We look for dogs that have outstanding drives to chase rewards and the willingness to work,” Oaks said. “We need a dog that has a good genetic background and a good drive to perform.” Before he ever set paw in Germany, Orca had already been extensively vetted. Barnum explained that experts tested and observed the dog for certain characteristics. As a puppy, he proved he was not too timid. He had to be independent and active, not sluggish. He had to be willing to play with humans. Medical tests proved his genetics were solid and early training ensured he knew the basics when he

No ordinary dog Orca, 86th Security Forces Squadron military working dog, looks at his handler, Staff Sgt. Steven Barnum, 86th SFS military working dog handler, after detecting a chemical odor during his training Sept. 6 on Ramstein. 86th SFS MWDs are trained in patrol work and either explosive or narcotic detection. Their detection and protection skills make them extremely valuable to neutralizing threats before they cause casualties.

reached Ramstein. It takes an extraordinary dog to do the job, but it also takes an extraordinary handler to shape him. So, Barnum is perfecting that early training to prepare Orca for his test. Whenever Orca does something correctly, Barnum enthusiastically shouts “Good boy!” and throws him a toy, pets him, and makes sure Orca feels congratulated. Barnum explained that he tries to keep work positive and fun for the animals, and to never push them too hard. The dogs slowly build behaviors by associating correct actions to positive reactions through hundreds of repetitions. Some dogs have the drive to do the work and some, like Barnum’s first dog, just

Orca, 86th Security Forces Squadron military working dog, hunts for chemical odor during his training Sept. 6 on Ramstein. Explosive detection dogs are trained to find specific chemical odors used in explosives and then to sit or lay down to show their handlers where the explosive is, allowing SFS personnel to clear the area.

don’t make the cut. “So far we’re doing well but we still have a lot of work to do,” Barnum said. “Orca needs to work on obedience and patrol work, but when it comes to explosive detection he was great straight out of the box.” The 86th SFS is not just testing Orca’s ability to do his job, they’re testing his ability to work as a team with Barnum. If Orca passes, he and Barnum will spend 12-hour days together, defending Ramstein. That means they need to have a good dynamic and pairing the two together was no coincidence. “They decide with the dog’s personality who would make a good handler for the dog,” Barnum said. “They thought we’d be a good team.” Barnum said some dogs need a gentler handler, and some a more stern one. Orca needs both, matching Barnum’s ability to shift between handling styles. Barnum said Orca is fearless, rarely shies away from anything and has a strong prey drive. He is very motivated to work for the explosive detection reward-toy. Orca is also more interested in detection than patrol work, which happens to be Barnum’s interest as well. Their bond began, as most relationships do, in Orca’s first days at Ramstein when Barnum let Orca get used to him. “That’s when a handler starts to see if the dog likes them,” Barnum said. “We can look for small things, like if the dog brings the toy back or

takes off running, or if when a handler walks into the kennel, the dog gets excited.” Over time, Barnum said, their bond will probably strengthen. “I think he respects me more than when I first got him,” Barnum said. “When I first got him, if he was off the leash and he got the toy, he was gone. He wasn’t coming back. We still haven’t gotten to the level where he’ll bring it back but he’s not going to run away. We’ll get there.” Barnum said it feels great to see Orca progressing and he is confident Orca will pass his test when the time comes. “It’s awesome to see him compete with dogs who have been doing this six or seven years and he’s already accomplishing things they are if not surpassing them,” Barnum said. “This is my project. This is my baby. If in nine months he’s horrible at detection, that’s my fault. On the other hand if he’s great, that’s my fault too. That’s one of the things I can stand up and say ‘I did that. I made the dog what it is.’ Everything he is his whole career will come from me because his foundation came from me.” From his years of experience as kennel master, Oaks believes that MWDs will always be an important asset to the U.S. military. “There are machines that pick up on different chemical compounds, but their nose is far better than any machinery,” Oaks said. “It’s very hard to stump one of the dogs.”

Air crews breathe easy with aerospace physiology Story and photo by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When pilots and air crews start up the engines, taxi to the runway and the take off into the horizon, they are relying on one another’s skills and expertise to get all of them back on the ground safely. The higher they soar, the more they are at risk for altitude sickness, which can manifest in a variety of ways. The 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Aerospace Physiology’s primary mission is to train aircrew, pilots, loadmasters, or jumpers, and anyone else who flies on the physiological effects of altitude. “We raise awareness of limitations in an altitude environment, because a human is the limiting factor in aviation,” said Capt. Charity Bolling, 86th AMDS Aerospace Physiology flight commander. “They say 60 to 80 percent of mishaps are human error, it’s not the machine. In order to try and prevent things from happening we need to be aware of our limitations so we can better manage things as they arise.” Anytime someone flies above 10,000 feet they are at risk for a variety of problems such as hypoxia, which is lack of oxygen at high altitudes, spatial disorientation, loss of situational awareness, decompression sickness, trapped gas, or visual illusions. As part of a campaign to raise awareness of these issues, aerospace physiology Airmen fly with air crews at 25,000 feet to show them how to mitigate these dangerous symptoms. “It’s to familiarize the individual with the environment they are going to be performing at so they know how their body will react, then run them through the corrective procedures,” said Master Sgt. Maria Paucar, 86th AMDS Aerospace Physiology flight chief. “What it is you are supposed to do so you are taking care of yourself and those who are flying with you.” One of the tools the 86th AMDS WEATHERMEN, from Page 1

supporting the global mission. “The Warfighter Weather Conference will create an atmosphere of better communication between the units,” said Senior Master Sgt. Leslie Orr, 21st OWS operations superintendent. “This will not only enhance the relationship between the 21st OWS forecasters and the warfighter they support, but this communication will greatly enhance the collaboration efforts of all involved which will in turn help to create better products and support.” For example, in response to the effects of hurricanes, like Harvey or Irma, if a

Capt. Charity Bolling, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Aerospace Physiology flight chief, monitors an 86th Operations Support Squadron pilot as he flies a simulated aircraft while hooked up to a reduced oxygen breathing device Sept. 13 on Ramstein. The purpose of the ROBD is to familiarize air crew personnel with effects of hypoxia, the lack of oxygen at high altitudes, and teach them how to mitigate the symptoms.

Aerospace Physiology Airmen have is a reduced oxygen breathing device. When air crew personnel are hooked up to the device, the team can run a simulation catered to the crew member’s particular job while the device slowly makes them hypoxic. Aerospace physiology specialists monitor the crewmember’s vital signs and actions in the simulation and advise them on corrective procedures to take. The device also familiarizes the Airmen with how their body reacts to a lack of oxygen, as it can manifest in a variety of ways. The experience can help the crewmember self-identify when they are feeling these symptoms when actually in the air. “We’re not made for altitude; we’re made for being on the ground,” Bolling said. “There are all kinds of things that can lead to mishaps if we’re not aware of (the effects) or don’t know how to properly manage or try to prevent (them). That’s why it’s important, just being aware of our limitations.” When the primary purpose of a career field is prevention, Paucar said it can be hard to see the direct results. “If you are a doctor, you know exact-

ly how many patients you have treated, and if you put a cast over something that’s sprained or broken it’s eventually going to get fixed,” Paucar said. “What we do is more preventative, we are doing everything we can to ensure something doesn’t happen.” Despite the lack of clear cut results for the physiology Airmen to see, their efforts attribute to restoring readiness for the Air Force to win any fight, any time. Without the team teaching air crews how to stay safe and in control of their faculties while soaring thousands of feet above the air, there could be many more accidents, incidents, and mishaps. “What we teach pilots and aircrews helps them stay focused on the mission while they are up in the air by increasing awareness,” Bolling said. “We give examples of mishaps explaining what occurred and why it occurred. I think it gets people thinking they better pay extra attention to this, whatever the case may be. Things can happen to experienced and inexperienced people.” The aerospace flight broadens their basic courses to include any type of problem arriving from a variety of work

weather unit in the affected area needed to close down, another unit would cover their area of responsibility to ensure continuity of operations to the warfighter. Through efforts made at the Warfighter Weather Conference that transition of responsibility is eased, promoting mission success. “Understanding where we all fit into the bigger picture and who we need to contact or communicate with will greatly enhance the support across the globe,” said Orr. “Better communication, understanding of the mission, and development of relationships will enable us to provide better products and services that ensure the safety of the warfighter.”

environments or personal choices that can have an adverse effect on Airmen while performing their duties. “Part of our job is to figure out what keeps people from performing at their best,” Bolling said. “Some of the things we provide training for is fatigue management, heat stress, dehydration, nutrition, pretty much all of those things about risk management.” Pilots and other air crew personnel train extensively to ensure they are capable of performing duties and completing their missions in an efficient and safe a manner. The 86th AMDS Aerospace Physiology ensures these Airmen also know how to stay safe in the air so they can touch back down without any mishaps. “I think aerospace physiology is one of those little gems that not a lot of people are really aware of,” Paucar said. “We’re trying to build up that whole Airman concept; making sure everybody is ready to go at any given notice. When they’re tasked to fulfill a mission they know exactly what they have to do out there and if something does happen, how they can get back home safe to their families.”

A base in a box: 86th MMS keeps Air Force ready for action

Col. Bradford Coley, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa chief of the logistics readiness division, (center), tours U.S. Air Force resources in Luxembourg, Sept. 14. The Luxembourg government’s Warehouse Service Agency manages the facility, but the 86th Material Maintenance Squadron is responsible for keeping accountability of the resources stored in the compound.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Somewhere in the Luxembourg countryside, armed guards keep watch over a compound of non-descript warehouses and storage containers. Each warehouse in the facility holds a different surprise, but those coming in will find that most of these treasures are kept hidden under lock and key. Stacks of metal boxes tower above the ground as workers inspect vehicles, equipment, and other material to make sure they are still usable. One may wonder what is so important about this labyrinth of a storage facility, and why the U.S. Air Force and Luxembourg government are determined to protect everything in it. “The 86th Material Maintenance Squadron manages 85 percent of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s war reserve material,” said Lt.

Col. Paul Arkwell, 86th MMS commander. “That can be anything from showers and latrines, special purpose vehicles, and spare parts.” Airmen of the 86th MMS are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and keeping accountability of the Air Forces’ war reserve material in in Europe. What makes the squadron unique is that it does not focus on one career field, but contains Airmen from multiple Air Force specialty codes. “We have 18 different AFSCs to manage all these different assets of the warfighter,” said Arkwell. “We have a small footprint, but this is a tactical level that has a strategic and direct impact to two theaters of war or beyond when called upon. It’s all about warfighter support, and recognizing that the Air Force mission has more than one career field.” The Luxembourg government’s Warehouse Service Agency manages the facility, but the Air Force owns most of the material stored in the compound.

Staff Sgt. Anthony Davis, 86th MMS non-commissioned officer in charge of asset management, said the squadron’s mission is to safeguard and maintain all kinds of material and equipment needed for establishing a bare base in a deployed location. “Anything can happen in this area of responsibility,” he said. “This squadron is ready for short-notice tasks. We are able to rapidly leave a footprint no matter where that demand is needed. We have anything a base needs to operate, and we can deliver it any time.” Davis stressed the importance of his squadron’s mission, stating that the ability of his squadron to support deployed troops has a direct impact on mission success. “The things we provide provides morale as well as combat support,” he said. “Once they return (to the base), they can relax, have a hot meal, and do anything else we can do here. Without those assets, the power and fuel, we wouldn’t be able to project the airpower we need

to be able to handle the mission. It would have a huge impact.” Senior Master Sgt. Kevin Whitely, 86th MMS superintendent, expressed pride in his job maintaining the Air Force’s WRM, saying he enjoys working with Airmen from different career fields. “This is the best job I’ve had since I joined the Air Force,” he said. “I’ve been at the squadron for over two years, and the reward we get back by working with 18 AFSCs is just amazing. In my opinion, this is the best unit I’ve been assigned to.” Arkwell also said he was grateful to lead the 86th MMS, adding that he felt honored to be able to lead a material maintenance squadron in the Air Force. “I couldn’t ask for a better unit,” he said. “The men and women of this unit have created Air Force-level impact. Their processes and procedures are changing the way the Air Force instructions and regulations are written because of the things they have done.”

Officials from the 86th Munitions Squadron, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, and the Luxembourg government’s Warehouses Service Agency, meet to discuss matters concerning WSA operations Sept. 14 in Luxembourg. Airmen of the 86th MMS are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and keeping accountability of the Air Force’s War Reserve Material in Europe.

ROB UTAP changes to appointment-only system The Utility Tax Avoidance Program saves military members and civilian employees thousands of dollars annually, and now the program wants to save patrons time too. Beginning Oct. 1, services will be offered only at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks VAT Office and only by appointment. Up until now, registration has been available on a walk-in basis at the Kleber Kaserne, Landstuhl and Rhine Ordnance Barracks Value-Added Tax offices. Lisa Hartmann, garrison UTAP Collections program manager, explained how the change will enable customers to spend more time with UTAP subject matter experts during their 30-minute appointment and not be rushed due to others waiting behind them.

“Appointments will allow us to give more detailed information and go over customer responsibilities as well as explain how the German utility system is different from the States, so that they have a better understanding of what to expect,” Hartmann said. “We will also explain how to close out and what to do in case they decide to move.” The shift in services will centralize all UTAP subject matter experts at the ROB VAT Office. “We will be available at ROB for customers should they have questions further down the line regarding meter readings and year-end bills,” Hartmann explained. “We will be the go-to office for UTAP.” Changing to appointmentonly for UTAP registration will lead to shorter VAT form wait times at Kleber Kaserne and Landstuhl VAT offices, which typically experience long lines due to staff assisting with UTAP registration. Customers may also continue

LRMC docs strengthen ties with host nation providers by Maj. Mark Jones and Cpt. Kenneth Bowden Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, TRICARE and International SOS recently hosted the annual Network Provider Event, bringing more than 40 host nation physicians and other healthcare providers from throughout Europe to meet their counterparts at LRMC. “The network providers in Germany, Italy and Belgium routinely augment LRMC’s capabilities and help us ensure that comprehensive and convenient primary care and specialty care services are available for our patients,” said Col. Louis Martinez, LRMC Deputy Commander for Clinical Service. “U.S. service members, Department of Defense employees, retirees and family members rely on LRMC and host nation providers to get the high quality medical care they deserve.” For more than a decade, this event has also showcased LRMC’s appreciation for the team of host nation providers who are crucial to the success of LRMC’s readiness and healthcare mission. LRMC leaders formally recognized providers from the Kaiserslautern community and Netherlands Aug. 18 with framed certificates of appreciation signed by Martinez and the LRMC Commander, Col. Timothy Hudson. “These certificates signify our sincere gratitude to host nation providers for partnering with us to take great care of our patients,” said Martinez.“It is vital to maintain strong ties between our staff and the host nation providers who collaborate in caring for our patients.” The Network Provider Event provides an informal environment for

I think it helps us work more efficiently for the patients

Cyber Vigilance by Senior Master Sgt. Chet Tonge 86th Communications Squadron In an effort to test the cyber awareness of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa personnel, an Air Force Information Aggressor Squadron conducted a “blue on blue” spear-phishing attack exercise against a number of specified users July 16 to 22. Exercise blue-on-blue: you just received an email from an unknown email address stating you would be given a free all-inclusive vacation package to a beautiful resort in GarmischPartenkirchen, Germany. All you have to do is sign up by clicking on the link provided in the email. Would you click the link? If your

answer is “yes,” you may have just fallen victim to a cyber phishing attack. Phishing utilizes social engineering techniques through electronic communications to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and other personally identifiable information from unsuspecting victims. The exercise mimicked real-world hacking tactics that could be used by the adversary. The message content was crafted using local information and tailored to a USAFE-AFAFRICA target audience. The goal of the exercise was to evaluate cyberspace training effectiveness, and identify attack mitigation deficiencies. Of the users who were sent the email, most did not take the bait; unfortunately

and makes it easier for everyone.” The end result of the Network Provider Event is a cooperative continuum of care that optimizes patients’ complete healthcare experience. “Now they have the relationship to start a meaningful dialogue between the entire care team, at LRMC and in the local community. This helps everyone get the right care to the right patient at the right time,” Maj. John Broussard,

LRMC chief of managed care. While the annual network provider event is a venue for expressing appreciation to network providers and creating an environment that facilitates provider-toprovider collaboration, it is just a seed. Each year, the seed cultivated by the event manifests in growth and true value for LRMC patients in the form of wellplanned, coordinated, safe and effective health care.

a small percent did. This essentially means personnel who accomplished their Department of Defense Cyber Awareness Challenge course within the past year, did not identify the general warning signs of a phishing attempt. Why is this significant? Successful phishing attacks on just one user could result in the adversary gaining unabated access to network resources, which could have negative implications with regards to critical mission accomplishments. The 86th Communications Squad ron Commander, Lt. Col. Steven P. Brummitt, also indicated the importance of such phishing exercises. “This blue-on-blue phishing exercise was well-crafted and a good example of the level of sophistication we’re likely to see in a real-world attack. Gone are the days when spear phishing emails were easy to recognize due to misspelled words and nonsensical grammar.

Today’s adversary has done their homework … they know how we bank, how we shop, and know what we’re interested in. They know more than enough to craft a clever email that makes it very tempting to click that link. We have to remember our Information Assurance Awareness training and follow those principles, check for digital signatures, and be wary of any request to click a link, download or open an attachment; and remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” The best way to protect yourself from this type of attack is to defer to your Air Force IA training. Department of Defense Cyber Awareness training teaches us unsolicited emails should be thoroughly scrutinized to identify obvious discrepancies in their legitimacy. Additionally, if you are unsure about an email you receive, contact your local Communications Focal Point for guidance.

In December of 1966, Cordier flew his 176th mission over North Vietnam and was forced to eject when his F-4 Phantom II took a direct hit from a surface-to-air missile. After spending 2,284 days in captivity, he was released during Operation Homecoming on March 4, 1973.

(for 4 people) ½ pound celery root 1 pound carrots ½ pound parsley root 4 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons butter 8 shallots 3 cloves garlic 2 bay leaves 1 tablespoon juniper berries Salt and pepper to season 1 cup vegetable broth 2 cups frozen peas 8 lamb chops (75 grams each) 2 stalks rosemary 1 bundle of fresh parsley 2 stalks of fresh mint

Peel celery and cut into 1-inch cubes. Peel carrots and parsley root. If you have larger carrots or parsley root, cut them in half and then into 1-inch pieces. They need to be the same size, so the cooking time is the same. Peel shallots and cut them into quarters. Peel and cut the garlic into thin slices. You can do this meal in a crock pot, large pot or cast iron pot to put in oven. Heat 2 tablespoons oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Add vegetables, shallots, garlic, juniper berries and bay leaves. Simmer for 8-10 minutes on medium heat. Add the seasoning, vegetable broth and let simmer with a lid for 10 more minutes. Add frozen peas. Simmer another 2-3 minutes. Heat a pan with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Let it heat up. Flatten lamb chops a bit and season with salt and pepper. Let roast on one side for 3 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon butter and rosemary. Turn lamb chops over and simmer for 4 minutes on medium heat. Chop parsley. Add it to vegetables. Add mint leaves and remaining butter to give a taste of butter to the vegetables. Taste again for salt and pepper flavors. Add more if necessary. You can plate with remaining mint or parsley leaves. If you would like a wine with this meal, a nice Italian Bardolino, French Beaujolais or a Spanish Rioja would be a great complement of flavor. Note: You can also add a splash of wine while the vegetables cook.

Klaus learned from an early age that he had an interest in food and cooking when he started helping in his parent’s restaurant at the age of ten. He enjoyed the environment so much, that he started an apprenticeship at the Augsburger Hotel Riegele at the age of 16. Klaus has been working in hotels and restaurants ever since, including the famous Ecke Stuben in Augsburg and the Post Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout his career he has been cooking traditional German and international dishes and found his love for crossover cuisine. Many of the recipes Klaus presents are his own crossover creations, which he is happy to share with you. Klaus has been offering private cooking classes for around three years now for groups up to eight people, either in your own home or in Klaus’ kitchen in the KMC, for slow food enjoyment with family and friends.

US Army North certifies the only Civil Support Team in Europe Story and photos by Sgt. Daniel Friedberg 7th Mission Support Command Under rainy skies, on an early fall morning better suited for sleeping in, Army Reserve Soldiers of the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Mission Support Command, responded to an alert on Daenner Kaserne, Sept. 14. The team donned specialized protective gear, deployed sensor equipment and released robots for a simulated contamination threat during an important certification exercise. Col. U. L. Armstrong, the commander of the 773rd CST, said the alert was a test of the readiness of his troops to provide a unique early emergency response for the special types of dangers which can threaten the lives of Soldiers and civilians. “It will be full-spectrum CST operations,” Armstrong said. Armstrong explained that his Soldiers are skilled in detecting and locating chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards and to provide higher echelons with information to decide the best course of action in the event of site contamination. To validate the technical proficiency of the unit, Department of the Army civilian observers experienced in civil and military CBRN emergencies also took part in the exercise. “They are assessed by how quick they can alert, assess, upload and go to a site and identify chemical, biological or radioactive materials,” said John Nonemaker, Deputy Director of the U.S. Army North Civil Support Training Team based in San Antonio, Texas. Nonemaker said a 90 percent surety

rate in the classification of CBRN contamination is expected of the civil support teams. He added, the certification is required every 18 months to ensure proficiency and skills. His team evaluates all 58 CSTs in the Army, but the 773rd CST is the only one in Europe, and in the Army Reserve. The other 57 are in the National Guard. Army Staff Sgt. Shawn M. McKenna, a CBRN Team Chief with the 773rd CST said his and other teams have an array of equipment and analytic resources on which to rely.

Army Reserve Soldiers of the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Mission Support Command, examine a car while searching for a simulated contamination threat during a certification exercise Sept. 15 on Daenner Kaserne.

“They’ll be able to identify basically what type of hazard it is,” he said. McKenna said when his team moves out in their distinctive protective suits and sensor-arrayed robots, it’s their job to find out as much as possible about the location and type of hazard using scientific measurement and analysis. The missions can have their dangers. McKenna and other team members balance the mission of gathering data with personal safety. Teamwork is essential, because the air in their closed-circuit breathing

systems and sealed suits is limited. “They’re constantly keeping us on track for monitoring air,” said McKenna of the mission control elements located safely at the perimeter of the contaminated site, connected with the team by radio. McKenna explained that when the air runs out for the team on site, a relief team is already suited up to continue the mission, wherever that may be, until the hazard is located and identified. “We could be crawling in tunnels … you name it, we go there,” McKenna said.

The 7-kilometer-long trail is located southwest of Freinsheim and leads through two vineyards called “Oschelskopf” and “Schwarzes Kreuz,” or black cross. An ornamented pillar made of sandstone from the 16th century, which shows the crucifixion scene, gave the wine-hiking trail its name. The event will start at 6 p.m. today by

opening 20 drinking and eating stands along the route, where Freinsheim vintners will present their specialties. Hikers can taste wines, sparkling wines and juices. International and regional food such as potato pancakes with salmon, coconut milk soup with cilantro and lemongrass, Palatinate tapas, goat cheese with walnuts, goulash soup, meat dumplings with horse radish, potato dumplings with sauerkraut, beef salad with chickpeas, oriental lamb pot, pumpkin soup, onion cake, waffles, crepes, warm chocolate cake with red wine plums, and a lot more. Things to do in Kaiserslautern & Ramstein

Apostle Church, Kaiserslautern — Photo by U.J. Alexander/Shutterstock.com

Known locally as KMC (Kaiserslautern Military Community), the areas around Kaiserslautern, Ramstein and Baumholder have a lot to offer military families during their tour here in the heart of South West Germany. If you are looking for things to do off-base with your family around Kaiserslautern, Ramstein and Baumholder or places to visit from the KMC whilst you are based here, then look no further! We have tips, recommendations and information just for you, written by Americans living in the KMC, as well as ex-pats and Kaiserslautern locals to help you to get the very best of your time here. Have some ideas of your own? Visit our Share page at http:// militaryingermany.com/share and submit your own ideas to be added to the website. This is your site! Let us

help you make the most of your time here. The Kaiserslautern Military Community is a community of Americans living in and around Kaiserslautern, Germany, providing support to the United States Armed Forces. KMC is home to around 53,000 people including Armed Forces service members, Department of Defense civilians and their families and is the largest U.S. military community outside of the states. KMC and the surrounding areas have some lovely sights and things to do if you are going to be stationed there or if you are visiting friends or family on the base such as: The Pfalz Wald Nature Park – which is the largest wooded area in Germany and is right on your doorstep. With this area of Germany having the mildest climate, this wildlife park is perfect for taking a nice stroll or bike ride. Cover-

ing over 12,000 km of land, it’s unrealistic to see all of it but there are plenty of small trails for you to follow and discover some of the beautiful castles and ruins along the way. The German Wine Road – If you’re into a glass of wine, or two, or three and would like to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery on offer why not take a trip down the German Wine Road where there’s a string of gem-like wine villages, castle ruins and fruit trees to enjoy. Bad Duerkheim – is the site of the annual “Sausage Market” in September, which, despite its name, is actually the biggest wine festival in Germany. It takes place in front of the “world’s largest wine barrel,” which was actually made according to barrel making principals. It could hold millions of gallons of wine, but instead holds a restaurant. The big population of Americans leads to some lively nightlife with a good jazz and rock music scene. Acts from the U.S. come over regularly to perform in Kaiserslautern’s numerous clubs – keep yourself informed by checking our events calendar at http://militaryingermany.com/events

on the site. There are many cultural activities including a year-round offering of operas, musicals and plays. Two museums house a rich collection of Palatinate history, folklore and art, and there is also a Beer Tankard Museum with more than 500 exhibits from the last 200 years. From April to October the city hosts a World Garden Show including a beautiful Japanese garden and Europe’s largest dinosaur exhibition. The city also has a zoo and a downtown skating rink, and the pleasant Volkspark offers Sunday concerts. Exploring Outside of KMC There is a tremendous amount to see and do whilst you are living in this very beautiful region of Germany. But perhaps you want to venture a little further afield? Visit our other city and country pages to get tips and recommendations for things to do and places to visit in.
