Going pink: Airman fights for breast cancer awareness Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “My grandmother and both of her sisters had breast cancer,” said Senior Airman Jordan Hebner, 86th Dental Squadron dental technician, recounting her story of why she joined the fight to raise breast cancer awareness. “She survived it twice and also had seven children while battling it. They didn’t give up, and they kept fighting the fight so I could do the same thing.” Breast cancer runs in Hebner’s family, and seeing her relatives suffering from it has affected her personally, she said. That is why she decided to join the fight against the disease, adding that she knew there is a possibility that she herself could be affected by it in the future. “It’s just a scary thought,” Hebner said. “Breast cancer is a life-changing thing, not only for the people who have it but their families as well.” In the spring months of 2016, Senior Master Sgt. Crystal Jarvis, 86 DS dental superintendent, gave Hebner an idea: design pink shirts and sell them. The color pink represents the struggle See PINK, Page 3

That is the positive side, because as a new Airman you aren’t drowning in a wing of (thousands) of people.” The partnership between sister services provides a unique experience for first-term service members. educational dialogue called Lunch and Learn, a 5-kilometer run and educational booths containing DVDs, books and biographies of famous public and historical figures with disabilities. The educational booths were set up at places where large numbers of people would see them, such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. Brown wanted the message of NDEAM to reach as many people as possible, saying the issue of disability employment should not be ignored. “NDEAM is not really a popular month; not too many people even know it exists,” Brown said. “So our major focus is to reach out and to

educate the KMC that this observance month does exist and it does have a very big impact on our society every day. This is something that we deal with on an everyday basis.” Disabilities, whether mental or physical, should not be a hindrance for people seeking employment, said Master Sgt. Vanessa Miller, 86th Medical Support Squadron medical readiness flight chief. Miller stressed the importance of allowing people with disabilities to prove they are capable of contributing to the workforce. “You don’t know what their strengths are until you give them the

chance,” Miller said. “You don’t want to exclude somebody just because of a certain aspect. Of course, there are certain standards requirements that a military active-duty (member) must hold, but there are still other positions in the military, (such as) civilians and contractors that those members can fill.” Miller, who also serves as a representative for NDEAM, drew inspiration from her personal experiences in her fight to help raise awareness for disability employment. Miller recalled a contractor she used to work with who was confined to a wheelchair and relied on an oxygen unit to breathe. Despite these disabilities, the contractor was still able to perform well at his job. “His strength was information technology; he was very knowledgeable,” Miller said. If there was something we couldn’t figure out in the field, we actually would go back and ask him what he would do, and that would solve the (problem).” Both Brown and Miller expressed appreciation for being able to serve as points of contact for NDEAM and stressed the importance of recognizing people with disabilities as equal partners in the workforce. “This month is focused on providing the education to let us know that we are aware that (discrimination) does happen, ... that you do work with people with disabilities, and that they are a very important asset to the military and to our United States of America,” Brown said.

and community mindset. “Although we will always have somewhat of a sibling rivalry, it is also an adventure for the Marines to be on an air base rather than a Navy or Marine base,” Verrett said. “The caveat to that is that we are also on a Spanish base with Spanish (service members). That is a win because most of us don’t get a chance to do a unique,

joint-service (assignment) until later on in our career. To have that at your first assignment and realize how those work together is a score.” Given that Morón Airmen operate as a squadron to keep the base running, many of them must wear multiple hats in their positions early on in their careers, said Alicia Petty-Leal, 496th Air Base Squadron host nation liaison. “I think this assignment is special for Team Morón because you have

not only U.S. Air Force, contractors (and) Marines but also Spanish units,” Petty-Leal said. “These units deploy and work together. ... We are exposed to so much at this base, where young Airmen have to learn the different Air Force specialty codes, additional duties and work experiences they wouldn’t normally see.” Senior Airman Brittany Liljenquist, 496th Air Base Squadron airfield management shift lead, explained that while

communication can be a challenge, it is no hindrance for Team Morón. “It is interesting to work with more than just Airmen,” Liljenquist said. “At an assignment like this, you see different viewpoints and may experience something new every day. Everything on the airfield has to go through the Spanish air force. ... Sometimes that is difficult with communication. Although we have a language barrier, everything flows smoothly in the end.”

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein’s observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, held every October, highlights the need to include the disabled — thousands who work in the Department of Defense — in the workforce. “We all play an exceptional role in the jobs we are required to do, and everyone is equal no matter what the disability may be. We should have the understanding and the patience to respect and appreciate their contributions and understand that they can play a significant role just like anybody without a disability,” said Master Sgt. James Michael Brown III, Installation Deployment Reception Center aerial support function section chief. Disabled people are a useful resource in labor and employment, Brown said. “They all have unique capabilities, knowledge and education that we tend not to pay attention to just because they might have a physical defect,” said Brown, who serves as a representative for NDEAM. “If we see an individual with a deformity, we just automatically assume that they probably can’t have the same level of competence that we might have. So I think we need to reverse that mindset.” Some of the tools used to raise awareness during NDEAM include an airpower, from page 1

86 CES hosts open house, celebrates fire prevention week

A firefighter assigned to the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron demonstrates the effects of a grease fire to a crowd during an open house Oct. 8 on Ramstein. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, 90 percent of house fires involve cooking equipment, with over half of those spawning from grease fires.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Fire Prevention Week kicked off with an open house for families in the KMC Oct. 8 on Ramstein. The goal of Fire Prevention Week is to educate the public on taking precautions to prevent harmful fires and learn how to survive them. It is a proactive method of reducing emergencies and PINK, from Page 1

against breast cancer, while the profits would be donated to research efforts for the disease. Some of the proceeds would also go to unit events. The shirts would be used as the 86th Medical Group’s Friday morale shirt but would be available for sale to anyone. “I didn’t really come up with the idea. I heard about it from somewhere else,” Jarvis said. “(Senior) Airman Hebner took that idea, ran with it, and she did a great job. I was very, very proud of her.” Jarvis was impressed by Hebner’s initiative, saying the senior airman, who was recently selected to be a staff sergeant, showed promising leadership skills. “(Senior) Airman Hebner is a very smart Airman,” Jarvis said. “I knew she was deserving for that staff sergeant stripe. I think that she has absolutely unlimited potential. To see her do that, it solidifies that the Air Force got this right.” Hebner cited her family,

the damage caused by them, said Brent Blasco, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of fire prevention. To educate the KMC, the unit held an open house and filled it with entertainment and informational booths. “We wanted people to come out and participate in these activities we have,” Blasco said. This year, the event was the biggest it has been yet at Ramstein, featuring a morning parade followed by the open

particularly those who have fought breast cancer, as the main inspiration for her to push through with the pink shirt initiative. “They were the main reason that I wanted to do this and help raise money for it,” Hebner said. “It made me want to fight a little bit harder, and there were definitely roadblocks while doing this. I would have easily given up on this if it wasn’t for them. Trying to find a cure for this horrible disease that affects so many women, that’s my drive,” Hebner said. “They are human just like us. They get over this obstacle of breast cancer. They keep fighting the fight, and they keep living their lives.” Hebner gave credit to her colleagues who helped her carry out the pink shirt initiative, saying they played a big role in supporting her cause. Her wingmen at the medical group stood by her in her fight for breast cancer awareness, she said. “They really helped me push through this,” Hebner said. “I was coming out from downstairs, and I saw every-

house, which also featured exhibits of different fires and what effects they can have. “From fire extinguisher training to grease pot fires, we have a lot of ways to bring awareness of fire hazards to the community,” Blasco said. “I’d say the open house was unique compared to all the ones we’ve ever done, so it was a success.” According to the National Fire Prevention Association, 90 percent of house fires involve cooking equipment, with over half of those being grease fires. After two hours of the open house, firefighters shifted focus to show off a vehicle extrication training exercise in front of the open house attendants. A vehicle extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a person who has been involved in a motor vehicle accident when conventional means of exit are impossible or inadvisable. Ramstein firefighters worked with local national firefighters to accomplish the extrication. This effort displayed the ability for both U.S. and German forces to work together and accomplish tasks effectively. “It’s a great opportunity for us all to work with the German firefighters,”

one in their scrubs and pink shirts. Even the guys were rocking it at the front desks. We also had patients coming in that had their pink shirts.” Jarvis cited Hebner as an example young Airmen can follow, saying her role in initiating the pink shirt project proves that junior enlisted Airmen are capable of showing good leadership. “She showed them that it’s okay to step outside the box; it’s okay to get out of your comfort zone sometimes,” Jarvis said. “I think by doing that, she set a great example. If she can do it, why can’t they?” Hebner said her empathy for those who struggle with the disease and the drive to raise awareness for their cause helped her to push forward. “When I was doing this, I thought about them a lot,” Hebner said. “I have never led something this big, especially at Ramstein, which is such a huge base. It was a little intimidating at first because it was such a big task; seeing the end product is definitely worth it. It was

said Senior Airman Dylon Bilskemper, 86 CES firefighter. “They are full of experience and help lead the team. Working with them allows us to combine the best of our unique abilities to accomplish the mission.” Spreading awareness is only the beginning when it comes to developing a culture of fire safety amongst the community. Team Ramstein can now ensure its safety from fire hazards by maintaining proper fire prevention behavior. For questions, message the KMC Fire Department on Facebook at www. facebook.com/KMCFire/.

Little teeth, big smiles by Capt. Christianna Moore 86th Dental Squadron Watching babies go from crawling and scooting to wobbling and walking makes for a very exciting time for parents. It also can be a little frightening as parents attempt to make the environment as safe as possible for their children. Some trips and stumbles are harmless, but other falls and bumps can injure children’s baby teeth. Establishing and maintaining a “dental home” will ensure there is a proper plan in place in times of stress and oral trauma. A dental home is having a primary care provider for your child’s oral health care; a place parents bring their children for regular exams and cleanings. Having a dental home can help both parents and children in these times of stress. So what is a dental emergency? What should you do? A dental emergency can be many things. Traumatic injuries that result in significant bleeding, pain, swelling, knocked out and chipped teeth are among the most common. Treatment varies depending on whether the tooth is a October 24th & 25th:

baby — primary — tooth or adult — permanent — tooth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has a great checklist that can be referenced to help make quick decisions if any of these injuries occur. The checklist can be found at http://mouthmonsters.mychildrensteeth.org/ active-kids-healthy-teeth/. Now, let’s discuss what to do if an emergency occurs. If your child chips a front tooth, either baby or permanent, use warm water to rinse the mouth to check for bleeding. A cold compress can be used on the lip or chin to help reduce swelling. Try and save any tooth fragments you find and bring them with you to the dentist. That tooth piece might be used if it is a permanent tooth for the repair. Don’t worry if you cannot find any or all of the tooth pieces. The dentist has other options to repair the tooth. If an adult tooth is knocked out, try and minimize over handling the tooth. It is best

if you can pick it up by the top part of the tooth not the root. If it is dirty, wash it briefly in cold water, but do not scrub the tooth! If possible, gently put the tooth back in place in the socket while you get to the dentist. If that is not possible, place the tooth in “Save-A-Tooth” saline solution, cold milk, or a container with your child’s saliva. Do not put it in water. Time is critical for the tooth to be saved, so get to a dentist quickly. In the KMC area, if it is after hours, you can go to Landstuhl Emergency Room. Don’t be surprised if the dentist does not put a baby tooth back into the mouth; they might not want to risk damaging the permanent tooth

developing there. Regardless of the type of dental emergency, try and remain as calm as possible. Children look to their parents for emotional cues so you remaining calm can help your child stay calm as well. The main concern in these cases is to try and control any bleeding with wet gauze or a washcloth. If in doubt about what to do, please call the dental clinic or go to the emergency room. How heat works in the KMC Courtesy of the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron How does heat work on base? Our district heat network produces hot water and distributes it to base buildings to provide heat through radiators. During the summer months, so little heat is needed that most of the system is deactivated. Once the temperatures drop to 55 degrees Fahrenheit for five consecutive days and forecasts indicate the average temperature for the next five days will stabilize below 55 F, the heat is reactivated. This is based on a review of the weather data for the past seven years. Within the KMC, the heating season is typically October through May. What do I do if the heat is not currently activated? Conserve the heat you have already.

Close the windows and window coverings at night to reduce heat loss. Keep the doors to seldom-used rooms closed to keep heat in the rooms you use most. Take advantage of natural heating. Open drapes and rollladens during the day so the sun can warm the inside of the room. If it is warmer outside than inside, open the windows to allow the warm air into the room. Close the windows in the evening when the outside temperatures begin to drop.

Once the heat is activated, how do I set the temperature? Your radiator control will look similar to the one pictured below. These controls are very different from the thermostats we see in the U.S. This radiator control is both the thermostat and the valve that controls the amount of hot water flowing

through the radiator. For the control to work properly, it must be surrounded by free circulating air. Do not cover it with clothes, curtains or furniture. Remember, radiators do not provide instant heat. Hot water must pass through the radiator, and the heat from the radiator is transferred to the room. Set the thermostat and allow time for the temperature of the room to come up before making any more adjustments. Radiators are usually located below windows, which is normally the coldest part of the room. A setting of “2” or “3” should provide comfortable heat for the entire room. Often, radiators are constantly adjusted and then windows are opened when it gets too hot. This is a huge waste of energy and money. Last year, the KMC’s heating bill alone was nearly $30 million. By following these simple steps,

you will ensure the comfort of your home and workplace, while saving energy and helping to lower the bill.

What if your radiator isn’t working right? The thermostat and radiator combination is a simple and reliable system with few moving parts to malfunction. However, if the control valve malfunctions there will be either no heat or too much heat. Occasionally, air is trapped inside the radiator and needs to be removed. Indications that air is trapped inside are knocking or gurgling noises or the radiator only feels hot to the touch on one half. If this happens on base, call the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron customer service at 489-6623/7703 or 0631-536-6623/7703. For off-base heating issues, contact your landlord immediately.

Ramstein cyber Airmen defend new domain Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs War used to be fought solely with tanks and airplanes, but in an age of technology, some would argue the keyboard is mightier than the sword. Team Ramstein cyberspace warriors at the 691st Cyberspace Operations Squadron ensure cyberspace is a viable domain to complete the Air Force mission. “Cyber plays an important role in every Air Force mission,” said Maj. Michael J. Hurley, 691 COS commander. “All of our mission and support systems rely on the confidentiality, availability and integrity of our networks.” The Airmen assigned to the 691 COS guarantee their networks remain reliable. According to Hurley, the primary domains people consider when talking about warfighting are land, sea, air, and space. However, with the addition of cyberspace — a manmade domain — new challenges arose. “How important is cyberspace?” asked Chief Master Sgt. Brendan Criswell, command chief of Air Force Space Command. “It’s an equalizer for our adversaries. No one is throwing up rockets to compete with us, but any person with a computer and the will could be a potential threat.” To counter such threats, the 691 COS was activated in March 2016 after the 83rd Network Operations Squadron Detachment 4, and the 690th Network Support Squadron Detachment 1 were combined to focus their cyberspace warriors on a more operational mission. Through the merger, the 691 COS is better able to allow commanders to prioritize their assets’ cyber mission requirements. In the case assets need to be protected from threats, the 691 COS can provide a mechanism and concept of operations to protect more valuable assets. “From a defensive end, we ensure those key components

General John E. Hyten, Air Force Space Command commander, speaks with Airmen assigned to the 691st Cyberspace Operations Squadron Oct. 4 on Ramstein. The 691 COS was established in March with the deactivation of the 83rd Network Operations Squadron Detachment 4 and the 690th Network Support Squadron Detachment 1 under AFSPC.

within the internal boundary of the Air Force Network, or the AFNet, are protected,” Hurley said. “We scan for vulnerabilities and viruses as well as patch and maintain equipment to secure it so that we don’t have malicious code and spear phishing emails causing harm.” The 691 COS accomplishes this for their global customers by focusing on four of the six 24th Air Force lines of effort for the Cyberspace Security Control System: build, operate, secure and defend. The build LOE ensures the Air Force Information Network is established and sustained to enable agile and responsive cyberspace superiority. The operate LOE comprises of actions taken to ensure the AFIN portion of the Department of Defense Information Network is functional and operational. The secure LOE prioritizes actions to prevent adversaries from achieving effects and to establish an acceptable level of information confidentiality. The defend LOE addresses protecting key cyber terrain from adversaries. It includes outmaneuvering or prohibiting adversaries taking action against defended networks or responding to imminent internal and external cyberspace threats. “Cyber threats continue to grow in scope, intensity and sophistication,” Hurley said. “In no other period in history have we seen threats increase with such speed, pace and proliferation. Time

is our nemesis, and we cannot afford to stand in this complex, contested and manmade domain.” During his visit to the 691 COS, General John E. Hyten, AFSPC commander, agreed that time is something they can’t waste. “It took us 25 years to make space real in the Air Force,” Hyten said. “It cannot take us 25 years to make

cyberspace real. We just don’t have that time.” Hyten mentioned that cyberspace and the connected technology grow too fast to spend that much time to make cyberspace a priority. He also asked the members of the 691 COS to remember why their jobs are important when looking to future changes. “Changes are coming,

and it all comes down to the ‘why,’” Hyten said. One change that has already taken place because of the ‘why’ is the 691 COS itself. Before the merger, the two detachments operated more as service desks responding to customers’ tickets. Now, they get to act more on what Hyten believes is their real business — protecting key mission systems and saving lives. The 691 COS not only protects and collects information, but they also create cyber effects that hinder adversaries and aid allies before a tank or plane is even moved, effectively removing or minimizing threats. “The ‘why’ is so much more important than the ‘what’ and the ‘how,’” Hyten said. “The ‘why’ means everything, and I hope like me, every time you realize the ‘why,’ you realize we’ve changed warfare.”

Flu vaccine community events scheduled for KMC Courtesy of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs The flu vaccine has arrived and will be offered to the KMC at various upcoming events. Army and Air Force medical officials have developed plans for all service members, retirees, family members, Department of Defense civilians and other eligible beneficiaries to receive the flu vaccination in the KMC. The FluMist nasal spray will not be provided this year, in accordance with Department of Defense policy to follow the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC is not recommending the nasal spray this year based on data showing lower effectiveness of the FluMist compared to the injectable flu vaccine. Army and Air Force health professionals recommend the flu vaccine for everyone ages 6 months and older. At community outreach flu events sponsored by the Air Force, Kleber Health Clinic and Baumholder Health Clinic, the vaccine will be provided to beneficiaries ages 6 months and older. At community events sponsored by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the flu vaccine will be offered

to beneficiaries ages 4 years and older. If the flu vaccine is not available at a community event for those younger than 4 years of age, they should receive their vaccination at their military treatment facility pediatric clinic. For many, annual vaccination is a requirement and not a recommendation. This includes military service members, healthcare workers, school age children, as well as childcare facility employees and attendees. These people should receive information from their unit or organization for guidance on when and where they will receive their vaccination. Both military and civilian beneficiaries are encouraged to attend one of these events which are provided as a convenience, as wait times should be shorter than those expected at KMC Immunization Clinics. A robust schedule of planned flu vaccine community events will be made available for local communities at locations listed below. • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Ramstein Enlisted Club; all beneficiaries 6 months old and above • 7 a.m. to noon Monday at the LRMC Heaton Auditorium; all beneficiaries 4 years old and above • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the

Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. Over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of fluassociated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some people, such as older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent seasonal flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. The flu season in Europe routinely continues through April with the greatest number of cases occurring in January, according to U.S. Army Public Health Command — Europe. Pumpkins make a cheesecake incredibly moist. This cheesecake will stay moist for days in the refrigerator. The flavors of both the cream cheese and pumpkin shine through. One warning: if you bake the pumpkin cheesecake without a water bath it will likely crack on the top. Filling: One small to medium pie pumpkin (it will need to produce 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of cooked pumpkin purée) 24 ounces of cream cheese (cultured cream cheese adds the most flavor, if you can get it) 3 whole large chicken eggs plus one yolk 1/4 cup of full-fat sour cream 1/2 cup of white sugar 1/2 cup of brown sugar 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground mace 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon of pure vanilla extract Directions Heat your toaster oven to 450 degrees F. Split the pie pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and stringy stuff. Rub each pumpkin half lightly with the oil of your choice (walnut oil works well for this). Bake until the pumpkin is soft all the way through, this should take about 45 minutes. Cool slightly, then scoop out the cooked pumpkin flesh and purée it in your food processor. Set aside. Decrease your toaster oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Combine the graham cracker crumbs, ground cinnamon, ground mace and melted butter in a medium mixing bowl. Mix well. think it adds to the rustic, homemade look. If the cracks present a problem for you, you will need to use a traditional Bain Marie, or water bath, and extend the baking time by 15 minutes. This will probably also require firing up your full-sized oven; there isn’t enough room in most toaster ovens for a proper water bath. pan. Bake for 8 minutes. Set the baked crust aside and let cool. Put the cream cheese into a stand mixer fitted with the beater paddle. Beat until completely smooth. Add the pumpkin puree. Beat till smooth and combined. Add the eggs and the yolk one at a time, beating between each addition. Add the sour cream, beat again. Add the sugar, beat again. Add the brown sugar, beat again. Add the cinnamon, mace, cloves, sea salt, flour and pure vanilla extract. Beat again. Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake for one hour, rotating it halfway after 30 minutes. Turn the toaster oven off, but don’t open it and leave the cheesecake in the toaster oven for an additional 30 minutes. Remove from the toaster oven and let cool at room temperature for 2 hours. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 5 hours. Tips And Suggestions Check out my other articles to find a recipe for homemade whole grain graham crackers. They make excellent crumbs for the crust. Put a small cup (oven proof of course) of water in the corner of your toaster oven while baking the cheesecake. Ramstein holds Wendelinus market, October fest

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein-Miesenbach will hold its traditional Wendelinusmarkt 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the center of town. Each year, on the fourth Sunday in October, the local advertising association sponsors a market with vendors and an entertaining program to remind of its origin. The history of Wendelinusmarkt dates back to the beginning of the 18th century when most village residents were farmers, and an epidemic threatened Ramstein’s cattle. People started praying to Saint Wendelinus, the saint of plague, who was asked for help

in case of contagious diseases. They promised to celebrate the day of Saint Wendelinus each year if the epidemic would end. The first celebration was on a Monday in 1710. People didn’t want to work that day and schools were closed. Relatives living outside of Ramstein came to visit, went to confession and listened to the fest sermon conducted by several priests from three altars, for 12 hours, without interruption. Afterwards, people stopped at the chestnut carnival in front of the church, where rosaries, crucifixes, prayer books, candles and chestnuts were sold. Years ago, the 12-hour prayer was moved to Sunday, and the local Catholic

holiday lost its importance. “Wendelinus market will feature about 100 exhibitors presenting arts, crafts and other merchandise in the center of town, which will be closed to motorized traffic,â€? said Joe Felka, market organizer. “Stores will also be open 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.â€? Visitors can enjoy German, Asian and Italian delicacies or make a stop at the French market with culinary specialties such as patĂŠs, terrines, cremant, champagne, crepes and tarte flambĂŠe. Children can enjoy rides on merry-go-rounds. The musical duet Duo Eiffler will entertain the audience on the stage on Marktplatz. Max Bousso and his percussion group will present African beats.

THE AWAKENING – HALLOWEEN AT FRANKENSTEIN CASTLE

Photo by Boris Stroujko / Shutterstock.com

When you think about the ultimate in Halloween experiences, obviously Frankenstein’s Castle is right up there near the top! We decided to do the tour during the day, mostly, because I am a big baby. I also hate the feeling of someone lurking in the dark with the intent to terrify me, especially if I am paying for it. Oktober 21 – November 6, 2016

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com read more at http://militaryingermany.com/the-awakening-halloween-at-frankenstein-castle tle, which became one of the biggest Halloween festivals in Europe. While it was not “scary” per se, it was definitely a little bit on the “creepy” side. I am convinced that the local talent (men dressed as various types of monsters) view this particular event as an opportunity to, let’s just say, exercise various degrees of public displays of affection.

The girls thought we were being dramatic and that this was an acceptable forum for the up close and personal contact. As a female over the age of puberty, I recommend that you be prepared for some inappropriate behavior. I can only imagine what

What to Expect The days are family friendly and the nights are more adult-oriented. A Bit of History Frankenstein Castle (or in German: Burg Frankenstein) is a hilltop castle overlooking the city of Darmstadt. This castle may have been an inspiration for Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic Novel Frankenstein. There is no definite proof that this is true… only that she traveled to the area prior to writing the novel. In 1978, American Airmen from the 435th Transportation Squadron started an annual Halloween festival at the cas-

My teen daughters and I became a source of amusement when we screamed and ran from these “monsters” as they (for lack of better words) groped us. Fortunately, my husband was with us and served as a bodyguard. I think he had reached his husband/father limit by the time we left. Overall, it was good fun and we enjoyed the experience. As I said, we went during family friendly hours and there were many smaller kids there who seemed to have a great time running from monsters.

the nighttime adult experience must have been! Tickets To book tickets, visit the castle’s website at www.frankenstein-halloween.de and click on Tickets in the top right corner.

Early-Bird Discounts for early booking on 1st Halloween weekend October 21 to 23. The reduced ticket prices are displayed in the booking process. Additional discounts are available for pupils, students, trainees and social workers. How to Get There Frankenstein Castle is located in Pfungstadt, in the district of Darmstadt. Pfungstadt is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern, For train details, visit www.bahn.de. During the Halloween event, there is no parking at Burg Frankenstein due to limited space. A bus shuttle service is provided starting from Pfungstadt, Mainstrasse in the parking lots of Toom and Edeka. The shuttle leaves from there every 15 minutes to the castle and back. Look for signs reading “Halloween P+R.” Please check their website at www. frankenstein-halloween.de for more details such as hours and ticket prices.
