Service members and spouses listen to a seminar during the European Theater Job Fairs and Transition Summit event sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Nov. 3 on Ramstein. Since its introduction, more than 24,000 veterans and military spouses have obtained jobs through the Hiring Our Heroes job fair program.

ervice members, veterans and their spouses attended the first European Theater Job Fairs and Transition Summit overseas Nov. 3 at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation launched the Hiring Our Heroes program in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities. “There is a tremendous amount of companies actively searching for veterans and the unique talents they possess,” said Eric Eversole, Hiring Our See JOB FAIR, Page 9

In addition, there are four internal domains that reside within the greater Ramstein network that receive a full concurrent CCRI on their own and get tied to the overall Ramstein score. At the northernmost tip of Ramstein you’ll find the “third runway,” where operations are supported daily via both terrestrial and satellite links. While the 86th Communications Squadron takes a leading role in authorizing administrators, operating and maintaining base infrastructure, and serving the vast majority of customers in the KMC, the 86th Airlift Wing is not the only unit inspected under the CCRI. The KMC is home to 13 different full-time communication units,

The Command Cyber Readiness Inspection scheduled for Dec. 1 to 5 is a Defense Information Systems Agency-led inspection of the security posture of Ramstein’s network. This assessment takes an in-depth look at the policies, procedures and technical capabilities in place on Ramstein, ensuring classified and sensitive information created, transmitted and stored is protected from unauthorized disclosure. Repercussions for failing a CCRI can include disconnection from the Department of Defense

Information Network and the isolation of all government computers on an installation. In the cyberspace domain, the U.S. Air Force is always operating in a forward facing environment of trusted relationships where a single weak link can endanger the entire DOD. Readiness is essential to ensure cyber attacks are held at bay and, due to the literal light speed of intrusion attempts, it is essential to be ready now. The 86th Airlift Wing’s primary mission is to provide combat airlift and operate the Air Force’s premier installation to enable and assure stra-

US student sees Berlin Wall come down

Story and photo by Dr. Linda Steil Warrior Transition BattalionEurope, A Company In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built and separated families and friends between East and West Berlin. East German officials claimed the wall was erected to protect their borders from attacks by imperialists. West Germans saw the wall as a political statement used to permanently separate East Germany from West Germany. Throughout the years, thousands attempted to flee East Germany by various means, including just walking across the border, hiding in suitcases, hiding in the well of a car or even hiding within the padding of a car seat that was hollowed out. Some made it; many didn’t. Over 750 people lost their lives trying to flee. On Nov. 9, 1989, I was in Leipzig, East Germany, as a doctoral student from Boston University. I had come to Germany to work on my dissertation. I split my time between the University of Heidelberg and the Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur (DHfK) in Leipzig, which happened to also be an Olympic training site for East Germany. I had been in the east for two weeks by this time; however, I had been to Leipzig three times before leading up to the historic events. Over the preceding few weeks, I witnessed the weekly Leipzig “Montags-Demos,” the Monday evening demonstrations. These continued to grow in size each week and started the movement to open the borders between East and West Germany. Nov. 9, however, was a Thursday. Coincidentally, my visa to East Germany was to run out the next day. I was planning on going to Berlin, through Checkpoint Charlie, for my return to the West. Late that last night, I was surprised when four

of the physicians I was working with at the DHfK showed up at my apartment. They told me to pack my bags, and we were heading to Berlin. The five of us crammed into a tiny car and headed to Berlin. It was cold, the car had no heat and we had no room. The lack of horsepower made the trip last more than four hours in what would have been a one and a half hour trip in a Western-made vehicle. When we finally made it to Berlin, through the chaos and jubilation it all became clear — the Berlin Wall had indeed been opened. We said our goodbyes, and I was on my own. I first tried to cross to West Berlin only to realize that the long throngs of East Germans heading west meant a wait of many hours. The lines of people waiting to cross went for blocks and blocks. By 3 a.m., the streets were filled with tens of thousands of people. At Checkpoint Charlie, the lines were just as long, if not longer. Not knowing what to do, I eventually approached a Western car with U.S. military plates on it. A young American couple waited in their car in line to cross back into West Berlin. Only Western cars were being allowed to cross in both directions. Easterners were only permitted to go west. I asked for a ride to avoid the pedestrian lines as most East Germans did not have vehicles, and this line was shorter. They checked my passport to verify that I was indeed an American. They agreed to let me ride with them. We realized that taking photos wasn’t going to work from within the car as people surrounded us and blocked all the windows. The Soldier opened his sunroof and had me stand on the backseat so that I could stand above the crowd. I watched in awe as the East German guards just stood there, not talking to anyone, not stopping anyone. East and West Germans hugged each other. Champagne corks were

popping everywhere, and people were laughing. Once through to the West, I noticed something odd. People were using hammers or other heavy objects to break away pieces of the Berlin Wall. Some tried to just smash it with garbage cans or anything that would cause the cement to come down. I left the Americans and walked over to the Brandenburg Gate section of the wall. Along the way, I could see East Germans were packed in the grocery stores buying whatever they could. It appeared the most popular items were chocolates, bananas and soda. Many store owners just gave it away to the Easterners, who had never seen a banana before. Rumors also spread quickly that the banks were handing out 100 Deutsch Marks to Easterners as “welcome money,” and lines had formed in front of every bank. By the time I made it to the Brandenburg Gate, daylight was breaking, and the sun was coming up. Locals had brought ladders to the wall, and crowds of people were climbing up. If you wanted to climb up, someone helped you. There was

no pushing or shoving. There was only teamwork. I made my way up a ladder and joined the hundreds of people already up on the wall. We all stood there and wondered what would be next. Today at Checkpoint Charlie there is a museum dedicated to the Berlin Wall and the people who died trying to cross into freedom. A wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling photo shows people standing on the Berlin Wall the morning it opened. I was proud to show my children when we visited that I too was in the famous photo of the Berlin Wall on the first sunrise over a new Germany. Now, 25 years later, so much has changed. I am back in Germany working as a contractor, helping wounded, ill and injured Soldiers recover in the U.S. Army. They continue to defend the freedom of the United States and its NATO allies, including countries that were former adversaries across Cold Wardivided Europe. For this anniversary, though, I will cross the former border and retrace the route of the most physical symbol of the Iron Curtain. Only this time, it is an imaginary wall. Do Airmen know they are the first line of defense when it comes to the security of Ramstein’s network? Contrary to conventional belief, attacks on the U.S. do not have to take the form of large coordinated governmentfunded efforts. It’s as easy as getting an Airman to decide that he or she wants to hear more about weight loss pills. Below are some tips on how users can do their part to keep Ramstein secure. • Secure Internet Protocol Router Uptime — users must have their Tactical Local Area Network Encryptions keyed and workstation powered on every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon. This allows the system to receive patches and will allow us to scan for vulnerabilities. • Log out and restart Nonsecure Internet Protocol Router computers at the end of the day, but do not power them down. • Only plug authorized

USB storage devices into government computers. USB drives are a vector for malicious logic and can expose the Air Force Network to intrusion. • Do not leave Common Access Cards unattended. Violators may be held accountable for illicit activity originating from computers accessed using their CACs. • Get to know the unit information assurance officer. They’re responsible for opening trouble tickets and acting as a focal point for all cyber

security matters. The 86th Communications Squadron is working hard to do its part to ensure the base network is configured properly and compliant with DOD policies, but every Airman — big “A” — plays a role in keeping Ramstein’s network secure. Now armed with these tips and an understanding of the role the 86th AW plays in cyber preparedness, Team Ramstein’s challenge is to do its part in keeping Ramstein secure.

he deployment comes and goes. New experiences were had. Feelings, both expected and unexpected, came up throughout the entire process. There may be uncertainty about how to behave once back in the “familiar.” Ready to go home, you are aware the journey isn’t over just yet. You’ve been nominated to go to the Deployment Transition Center at Ramstein Air Base. The reason? Since opening its doors in 2010, the DTC has hosted approximately 8,000 service members traveling from combat operations in theater to their homes with the intent to make the transition easier. “This premier center of excellence is the only unit of its kind in the Air Force,” said Lt. Col. Jefferson DeBerry, DTC commander. Initially stood up to help Airmen from security forces, explosive ordinance disposal, tactical air control parties and whoever else could be exposed to combat stress for prolonged periods, the DTC is now open to all service members and

Department of Defense civilians who may exhibit negative metrics related to a deployment. “When we are talking about negative metrics, we are looking at things such as post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism or domestic disputes,” DeBerry said. While certain Air Force specialty codes are pre-identified to attend the DTC after deployments, any member can be nominated by their deployed commander. “Over time, the DTC has proven to be a game-changer in caring for our deployed personnel,” DeBerry said. “Studies comparing those that have and have not attended the DTC have shown a decrease of 40 to 50 percent in depression, anger management, alcohol use, PTSD symptoms and serious conflicts.” The staff at the DTC are aware that stressors from deployments happen from the time members are notified until the time they leave their areas of responsibilities downrange, and during the four-day program, redeployers are given the chance to address those issues. “We give them an opportunity to decompress,” said Master Sgt. Brian Yannarelli, DTC medical corps mission set manager. “We offer them

some time to vent and give us their opinions on how their deployments went from the time they were notified to the time they left the AOR.” On the first day, members arrive and are given the rules of engagement for the program. DeBerry said many of the redeployers choose to simply shower and relax in their private temporary living quarters — a luxury many have likely gone without for six months or more. On the second day, redeployers are

able to give candid thoughts about their experiences throughout the deployment during the After Action Report class. The DTC then supplies a report based on that information to Air Force leaders and functional managers of their respective career fields. DeBerry said the AAR is used to allow leadership insight on how to improve the deployment experience. See dtc, Page 13

It also featured seminars, roundtables, panel events, recruiter training and facilitated discussions focused on improving competitive employment for service members and veterans. “Events like these allow those of us who are serving a chance to prepare for our future,” said Senior Airman Carlyle Douglas, 86th Material Maintenance Squadron aircraft armament technician. “It clues you into what employers are looking for and helps better package yourself.” Since its introduction, more than 24,000 veterans and military spouses have obtained jobs through Hiring Our Heroes job fairs. Capt. Spanky visits Trunk-or-Treat Hello again, Ramstein! This week I had a chance to experience something wild. On this adventure there were fairy princesses, scary witches and ghastly ghouls. At first, I didn’t know what was going on, but it was scaring the cheese out of me. That is, until my human explained that we were at the Ramstein Trunk-or-Treat, and what I thought were villainous creatures were really just cute children dressed in costumes trying to get enough candy to keep the dentists busy for months. That also explained why my human decided to put me in lederhosen (I hope). The Ramstein Trunk-orTreat was awesome after I understood what was happening. I got a chance to run around and play with all the children and see some extremely creative costumes

Recipe of the week Stuffed pancake rolls Servings 4 INGREDIENTS: FOR THE PANCAKES: 1/4 liter milk 2 medium eggs 1-2 teaspoons tomato paste 100 grams flour, sifted Salt and pepper, to taste 4 teaspoons oil

(way to go parents!). If you have never been, I suggest it for next year. Even if you don’t have kids, they are always looking for more trunks. I, for one, will definitely be going back. I hope to see you there next year! Also, don’t forget to check out the photos from this year’s event on pages 20 and 21!

FOR THE FILLING: 1 red bell pepper, cut into thin stripes 1 small head romaine lettuce 200 grams turkey breast, cut in strips 1-2 tablespoons oil Curry powder, to taste 210 ml tuna in water 2 tablespoons mayonnaise DIRECTIONS: FOR THE PANCAKES: • Combine the milk, eggs, tomato paste and flour. Mix until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. • Coat a 24 cm (about 10 inch) frying pan with about 1 teaspoon oil. When the oil is hot, pour about ¼ of

the batter into the pan. • Turn the pancake over when the batter has set. • Repeat, beginning with the oil, until all of the batter is cooked. This will make four Pfannkuchen (pancakes). Set aside on a plate or platter. FOR THE FILLING: • Wash the red bell pepper and remove the seeds and white membrane. Cut the pepper into thin strips. Wash the lettuce and cut it into stripes as well. • Rinse the turkey breast under cool water and pat dry. Cut the meat into strips. • Heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in the frying pan. Brown the meat on all sides, seasoning with salt, pepper and curry powder. • Drain the tuna fish and cut into small pieces. • Mix the mayonnaise into the tuna, seasoning again with salt and pepper. • Spread the tuna mixture onto each of the Pfannkuchen. Top the tuna with the lettuce, red bell pepper and turkey breast stripes. Roll the pancake up and cut in half at an angle.

Page 12 atlantic resolve, from Page 3 and limited battalion-level training alongside partner Romanian army paratroopers. Romanian and American soldiers will conduct weapons range activities, along with maneuver, support and integration exercises following the simulated combat jump. The 173rd “Sky Soldiers” will employ MK as a launching point for the exercise and a redeployment hub once the mission concludes. MK’s evolving role extends beyond training and repatriation. Support Soldiers serving at MK provide financial, mail and administrative support as required. They provide customs support from the Black Sea port city of Constanta to the base airfield. The installation, Bahr noted, plays a vital role in U.S. anti-terror and force protection planning and execution throughout Romania and Bulgaria — countries falling within the 21st TSC commanding general’s area of geographic responsibility. U.S. personnel based at MK also support host nation partners. Americans and Romanians collaborate closely on training and logistics as well as security issues. MK leaders conduct regular coordination with diplomats and local government officials as well as military leaders, serving on relevant committees and boards as appropriate, Bahr said. Americans provide significant, if modest, direct support to host nation military units, allowing use of U.S. facilities and containers, for instance. They also participate in community activities ranging from visits to area child placement centers to holiday celebrations. Indeed, Soldiers and Marines based at MK recently judged a cooking competition; results will air during a popular television culinary show in mid-November. Above all, MK serves as an ideally situated, highly developed, well-run multimodal logistical center warmly supported by host nation leaders and the local population. “We provide cargo throughput and regional logistical support,” Bahr said. “We have a good port, good roads and a good airfield. We’re versatile.” Mulvihill emphasized the importance of strategic position and geography as well as host nation support. “The bottom line is location matters,” he said. “As a strategic hub, we have the capability to move personnel and cargo by all methods. Whether it’s highway, rail, air or sea, you can conduct truly multimodal operations to include the Danube inland waterway system that would allow us to barge cargo between Germany and Romania. We’re close enough to Southwest Asia, where strategic airlift can come in, top off their fuel and move from there to the trouble spot. The key to that is the partnership we’ve had with the Romanians for many years — that gave us the necessary freedom of movement.”

Cybersecurity Awareness Month by Senior Airman Christian Rodgers 86th Communications Squadron The typical buzz word in today’s cyberspace domain is “cybersecurity.” Cybersecurity is developed into layers, in which all are utilized to protect a nation’s assets, as well as incorporate strategic planning to actually attack adversaries. Popular cybersecurity threats, such as SSL 3.0 “POODLE,” Stuxnet, the ILOVEYOU virus and many other recent loopholes, have consistently called for different levels of security to be applied. Those are the fancy names, but what personnel generally see on their machine is average and plain to the eye, such as a link on Facebook or a phishing scam through emails. The layers of security developed through the National Institute of Standards and Technology, security policy and white papers published by SANS, the requirements made by the National Security Agency, and the standards created by the International Organization for Standardization helped derive all of the Air Force’s key components

for security. These security practices have been around and have been continuously tailored for more than a decade. As mentioned, cybersecurity is developed in layers. The layers in which a system is built are commonly viewed in an organization’s business impact analysis and formulated into a defense-in-depth or securityin-depth approach. Defense-in-depth is used to consistently add layers of security onto different programs, ranging from physical security to the actual application of firewalls onto a particular server or network. To an end user, what does this mean? The weakest link in any security chain is a vulnerability, which makes even the strongest systems vulnerable. Even though restarting a computer to install patches and security updates can be inconvenient, the patches pushed out to these systems protect information already known to have security vulnerabilities. For example, Stuxnet, the first malicious software to be used as a weapon, was originally transferred through a USB plugged into an information system. This stealth virus

was capable of spreading without any knowledge to the operators. It ultimately set Iran’s nuclear program back by causing physical destruction to their uranium enrichment plant, the first physical destruction of a system caused by an electronic code. Today the Air Force sees hundreds to thousands of users accidentally and intentionally plugging in USBs to charge their phones, upload music on their computers or take work home. All are capable of transferring viruses, worms and other malicious codes. What does this mean to Ramstein users? The Air Force dominates in air, space and cyberspace, and cyberspace is a key domain in winning today’s battles. Data owned in Ramstein information systems, whether it is an excel spreadsheet or a nuclear weapon, needs to be protected. This data is instrumental to the flying, fighting and winning stages of today’s force. The alteration, deletion or fabrication of data could develop into hundreds of man-hours lost, or an attack on the power grid could cause hundreds of miles to be without power — all from a click of the mouse.

Members are allocated several hours to walk around the city, see the sights and taste the local cuisine. “In that experiential outing, we get them into the local community and get them comfortable being around people again,” DeBerry said. “They don’t have to question their surroundings, whether or not someone is going to try to harm them.” On the third day, members attend the second class called the Combat Bridge. “The Combat Bridge is focused on the four pillars of mental, spiritual, physical and social health,” DeBerry said. “We try to make the connection between the things they did downrange to maintain their fitness to the things they can do at home.” After the Combat Bridge, redeployers are allowed to relax and enjoy their last night in Ramstein before they head home on the fourth and final day. “The Air Force is very sensitive to make sure DTC staff has the time that is allocated to help decompress as much as possible,” DeBerry said. “Yet, at the same time, we are very sensitive that they want to go home and be rejoined with their family members and loved ones.” For more information about the DTC, visit the DTC Web page located under the “Fitness & Health” tab on the AF Portal.

Nov. 11 not only marks the beginning of the German carnival season but also St. Martin’s Day. On Tuesday, Germans honor the patron of the poor and friend of the children — St. Martin. In the evenings before or the night of Nov. 11, kindergarten children walk in processions through Kaiserslautern and villages in the KMC to honor Martin of Tours. They carry lanterns, which they crafted in kindergarten, and sing Martin songs. Usually, the walk starts at a church and goes to a public square. A man on horseback dressed like a Roman soldier, Saint Martin, accompanies the children. When they reach the square, the Martin’s bonfire is lit and Martin’s pretzels are distributed. Martin was born in the year 316 or 317 as the son of a Roman civil servant. At age 15, he joined the emperor’s cavalry. One cold, winter day, he was riding through the countryside when a shivering beggar came his way asking for alms. Since Martin had neither food nor money, he cut his robe in half with his sword and gave a piece to the freezing man. Supposedly, the following night, Jesus appeared in Martin’s dream and explained how he had been the freezing beggar to whom Martin had given half his robe. This event changed the soldier’s life. He left the army, got baptized and became a student of Hilarius, Bishop of Poitiers, France. In 356, after Martin’s teacher was banned and after he failed to convert his father and others to the teachings of Hilarius, Martin left for an island near Genua, where he lived as a hermit. In 360, Martin gave up his solitary life to join Hilarius again, who returned to Poitiers. In 361, he founded the first Gallic monastery in Liguge, France. In 371, the clergy and the people elected him bishop of Tours.

Prior to the lantern procession in Ramstein-Miesenbach, a St. Martin’s worship service takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Catholic church.

In 375, he established Marmoutier, a monastery for ascetic life and a school for bishops. Martin was still trying to evangelize pagans. On Nov. 8, 397, during a pastoral trip to Candes, he died. Thousands of monks, consecrated virgins and others went to his funeral Nov. 11. Years later, a basilica with the St. Martin Abbey was built on top of Martin’s gravesite. King Chlodwig elected Martin as patron of the Franks. The tradition of the lanterns goes back to former times, when people lit candles to honor a saint and when lanterns were put up everywhere in town during a bishop’s visit. The custom of lighting a bonfire after the lantern procession represents the beginning of festivities. In former times, most of the work in the fields had been completed, and now it was time to celebrate, drink and eat. Traditionally, a fat goose and sweet bread were served. One legend says that St. Martin died after eating a whole goose at a single meal. Another legend says Martin was hiding to avoid his election as Bishop of Tours, but chattering geese revealed his hiding place. The tradition of eating a “Martin’s goose” at this time of year has been kept. Many restaurants in the KMC added Martin’s goose with dump-

lings and red cabbage to their menus. Even on Christmas, Germans like to serve goose. In Kaiserslautern, the lantern procession of St. Martin’s Church starts at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Martinsplatz at the beginning of Steinstrasse and ends in front of the Rathaus, where St. Martin will divide his coat and the bonfire will be lit. In Ramstein village, festivities will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Catholic church. Then the lantern procession with St. Martin on a horse and musicians will go through town. The St. Martin’s play will be presented, the bonfire will be lit, and pretzels and Glühwein will be available. In Landstuhl City, St. Martin’s parade will be held at 6 p.m. Monday with a play at Heilig-Geist-Kirche. It will end at the Altenzentrum (meeting place for senior citizens) with a fire and the sale of Martin’s pretzels, tea and Glühwein. The villages of Otterberg, Niederkirchen, and Mölschbach start their lantern processions at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The ones in Schneckenhausen, Hirschhorn and Morlautern will begin at 6 p.m. In the wine village of St. Martin, south of Neustadt, the Martinus wine fest is being celebrated today through Tuesday. Dahn will hold its traditional Martini market with vendors and a little carnival Sunday. Stores will be open from 1 to 6 p.m.

Dental volunteer program bridges gap of inexperience Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Michael Stuart 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

ith downsizing and forceshaping programs affecting Airmen worldwide, the manpower in the Air Force takes a toll. The 86th Dental Squadron and the American Red Cross teamed up to offer the American Red Cross Dental Assistant Training Program. The program helps the Air Force with manning and is an opportunity for Department of Defense identification cardholders to enter the dental assistant career field. “It’s a great program that relieves some of the stress on our manning issues,” said Master Sgt. Jessica McNabb, 86th Dental Squadron Support Flight chief. “We are not at 100 percent manpower, and the Red Cross program helps fill those empty slots.” Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have access to the base, transpor-

tation and be willing to dedicate seven months to becoming more proficient in dental assisting. For the first two weeks, students attend classroom lectures where they learn about the different areas of dentistry such as pediatrics, oral surgery and periodontics, the prevention of diseases and conditions, as well as learn the anatomy of the head and teeth. After being taught the basic tools and terminology of dental assisting, they assist a general dentist for approximately six months. “They operate the same way a dental assistant would be utilized in every way,” McNabb said. The course helps participants become more marketable when applying for jobs in the dental field by giving them the necessary skills and job experience. “This class will definitely help you out in the long run if you are looking for a career field in the dental industry,” said Aura Almendarez, American Red Cross dental assistant volunteer. “I would definitely recommend this
