Weather Airmen bridge NATO forecasting worlds Story and photo by Senior Airman Armando A. Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of the 21st Operational Weather Squadron take an opportunity to learn more about local weather patterns with 2nd Lts. Monika Kaczanowska and Daniel Kowalczyk, Polish armed forces meteorological and oceanographic officers, Nov. 14 on Kapaun Air Station. The 21st OWS showed the two Polish armed forces members around the U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command weather systems and operations.

he 21st Operational Weather Squadron, part of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, hosted two Polish armed forces members Nov. 9 to 22 to learn and develop skills from each other to predict accurate, timely and relevant environmental weather intelligence. The meteorological and oceanographic officers, 2nd Lts. Monika Kaczanowska and Daniel Kowalczyk, were given an in-depth look into the tools, systems and processes used to forecast weather for Ramstein, U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. “This visit allowed us to (build partnerships) with our NATO (meteorological and oceanographic) allies,” said 2nd Lt. Lucas Huddleston, 21st OWS weather officer. “It made it easier for the two weather communities to help each other to get our missions done.” Huddleston and the 21st OWS team showed how U.S. Airmen predict and disseminate weather forecasts for military units within the USEUCOM and USAFRICOM areas of operaSee WEATHER, Page 2

New app to solve basic computer problems across AF help. The application will eventually include network, software, hardware and other user account capabilities. The application began rolling out across the Air Force in stages, starting with Joint Base San AntonioLackland, Texas, and Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, in October. After those locations, the app will be implemented across the major commands in stages. The rollout date for Air Education and Training Command bases was Monday. Users who experienced account or network problems over the last few years have called a central customer

service center. With a customer base of over 650,000 people, the ESD’s automated phone system had been significantly overburdened, which led to a cascade of inefficiencies. Not immune to the fiscal challenges so familiar across the Air Force, the 67th Cyber Wing advanced on a new approach to customer service, necessary to solve this complex problem. “Back in February, the average call wait time was around 20 minutes, but during peak periods this could easily run up to an hour,” said Col. Chad Raduege, commander of the 690th Cyberspace Operations Group.

“That’s a 60-minute wait just to tell an ESD technician that you have a problem. Coupled with the ESD’s backlog, our return to service time took up to seven days. That’s unacceptable.” The ESD is transforming to more efficiently empower users to find solutions to their technical challenges as well as leverage new automated programs to eliminate the need for a call center. It is important to note the ESD is not closing. It will still exist. It is simply transforming its business processes on more proactive tasks. See APPLICATION, Page 3

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. — As the Air Force Enterprise Service Desk goes virtual, Airmen will see a new application on their computers that allows them to immediately tackle and fix their minor information technology issues. The Virtual Enterprise Service Desk is a client-based application that allows the user to solve common issues and self-initiate trouble tickets for email, desktop, laptop and mobile devices. It allows for status checks of any current trouble ticket, feedback submission and provides further contact information for more

Your computer needs a nap by 2nd Lt. Kyle Massey 86th Communications Squadron

our computer is your friend, confidant, procrastination enabler and productivity partner. It can be moody at times, but the trait we usually notice most about our digital partner is its speed. Like us, computers tend to slow down after working for long periods of time. Ever wonder why? Applications or programs on your computer require memory to do their work. So let’s think of programs or apps as toddlers, a com-

puter as a day care worker and memory as toys. At the start of the day, the day care worker passes out toys to the toddlers. The toddlers play and have fun, but they want more toys. The day care worker provides toys to children as soon as they arrive, but the day care worker is starting to run out of toys. The day care worker is struggling to find more toys for the children who recently arrived, but the toddlers from earlier do not want to share. The day care worker is taking longer to complete or even start other duties, because time is being

spent finding extra toys to please the other children. If only there was some way to get the toys back and share them among all the children and toddlers. The day care worker decides it is nap time for everyone. When all the toddlers and children who arrived fall asleep for a nap, the day care worker collects the toys. Then, the toys are handed out again among all the children when they wake up with no trouble from the toddlers who had them earlier. After the nap, all the toddlers and children who arrived later are happy and sharing a toy.

Programs, apps and computers need breaks or naps to get things back in order sometimes. The way we do that is through a restart or by logging off the computer at the end of the day. This allows the computer to grab all the toys or memory lent to the un-sharing toddlers or programs, so after the break it can share everything equally and get back to working properly. There you have it. Your computer needs a restart once in a while to share memory fairly to your programs and apps. It is essential to keeping your computer speedy.

tion to the two Polish personnel. They did this by giving them hands-on experience with U.S. weather equipment, systems and taking them to other squadrons and units around USAFE and AFRICOM that use the 21st OWS forecasts. “It’s been good to share tips and tricks, culture and build a relationship, because we deploy (meteorological and oceanographic) personnel to Poland,” Huddleston said. While learning from each other was the primary purpose of the mission, a side benefit was the new on- and offduty experience gained by the Polish service members. “We appreciate the opportunity to be here, because not many weather soldiers of our rank get to travel abroad and learn like this,” Kowalczyk said. Huddleston said this opportunity may come again for both sides as service members from each military are attempting to continue the program to share knowledge, cultural experiences and develop one another in the future.

US services honor vets in Luxembourg Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr. 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Hundreds of Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, family members, local citizens and honored guests gathered at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial Nov. 11 to honor the veterans of the U.S. military during a Veterans Day ceremony. Among the guests were Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and Robert A. Mandell, U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, as well as senior leaders from the 52nd Fighter Wing out of Spangdahlem Air Base. “History is replete with accounts of free men and women who’ve put application, from Page 1

“The ESD continues to modernize and retool in order to address the call wait times and return to service rates,” said Lt. Col. Mark Reith, commander of the 690th Network Support Squadron. “It started with an online tool called MyGAL, and then we added IAO Express. These tools drastically improved user experience. “Today the average wait time is five to 10 minutes, and users should expect an average return to service time of about half a day,” he added. “The vESD app is the final piece of the new IT support model, and it comes just in time before the Air National Guard migration into (the Air Force Network).” With the vESD, the user simply clicks an icon on their desktop, answers some simple questions, and the software attempts repair. They effectively reach a virtual ESD technician immediately. Similar to the human technician, the vESD will attempt repair based on the user’s response to questions and will perform its own “health check” of the user’s computer. If it can’t resolve the problem, the vESD will automatically initiate a trouble ticket and route it immediately to the appropriate office at one of the Network Operations Squadrons or the local Communications Focal

themselves in harm’s way in order to ensure freedom continues to prevail,” O’Connor said to the attendees. “It’s humbling to visit the graves of our fallen heroes, particularly at a time when we have brave service men and women around the world also willing to do whatever is necessary to protect all that we hold dear.” Airmen from the 52nd Fighter Wing and the 726th Air Mobility Squadron provided a color guard, bugler, honor flight and firing detail for the event. Throughout the event, the cold weather and moderate rain did not detract from the message delivered by the ceremony’s key speakers. Both O’Connor and Mandell delivered powerful messages, honoring those who have served and those who See veterans day, Page 9

Point, depending on the problem identified. “Historically, about 70 percent of all tickets are minor issues that could be resolved through this type of automation,” Reith said. “The remaining tickets are generally forwarded to other offices for resolution, because it is beyond the expertise of the first-line technician. The vESD is great, because it either resolves the minor issue or routes the ticket to the right back-shop office. Instead of waiting for someone to answer the phone, the tough tickets are created and routed to the right specialist faster.” The local communications squadron will continue to be an important partner in the new IT support model. Armed with additional IT permissions, they are empowered to work their local priorities. In extreme cases, users may need to call their local support when a computer is com-

pletely broken or off the network. This is actually a faster approach since, even if the ESD did take the call, they would not be able resolve it since remote access wouldn’t be possible. Eliminating the middleman actually improves the user experience. “Automation allows our users to update more information on their own, and even solve common problems at their desktop,” said Craig Biddington, senior communications officer for the 366th Communications Squadron at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. “Now our technicians see fewer tickets, allowing us to recapitalize resources toward more critical tasks.” The ESD will continue to be an important part of IT support, just not as a call center. The future ESD will focus instead on proactive activities that prevent issues in the first place. One example is the creation of a

problem management team. Often cited as an industry best-practice, problem management focuses on finding the root cause of enterprisewide issues and ensuring that solutions are worked through the engineering and acquisition battle rhythms. Another example is the creation of an AFIN Mission Assurance

Center, or AMAC, to orchestrate maintenance actions amid real-world operations. These initiatives are key elements of realizing IT efficiencies and maximizing limited IT resources while protecting Air Force missions. (Information courtesy of Air Force Space Command Public Affairs)

hough theft is more prominent during the  warmer  months,  prevention  should  be  a  priority  all  year.  With  the  holiday  season  just  around  the  corner,  it’s  important  to  secure  homes  and  vehicles  whether  traveling  or  staying in the local area.  Thieves tend to look for “easy targets.” Easy targets include unlocked car doors, open windows and  doors that are not locked with a deadbolt.  Most  commonly  in  the  wintertime,  motorcycles  and  street  bikes  are  stolen.  This  may  be  because  they are ridden more in the warmer months and are left  in  one  area  during  colder  weather.  To  prevent  these  vehicles  from  being  stolen,  there  are  many  precautionary measures to take. “For  motorcycles,  I  see  a  lot  of  common  ways  they’re  stored,”  said  Master  Sgt.  Duane  Stinson,  569th  U.S.  Forces  Police  Squadron  superintendent  of plans and programs. “If the handlebars are turned  all the way to the side and you lock the lock on the  ignition,  it  secures  them  in  place,  and  the  wheels  won’t  roll  straight.  That’s  a  safety  feature  from  the  manufacturer. That usually doesn’t stop a thief. What  they’re doing is taking two or three people and picking it up. Even ones I’ve seen that are chained, the  chains are being cut, so that’s not effective either. The  best advice I can give is to store them in garages or  sheds to where it’s not in plain sight.” The most commonly stolen item year-round may  not  be  the  first  thing  that  comes  to  mind.  Reading  the  blotter,  electronics  and  wallets  may  be  typical,  easy-to-take items, but automobile thefts have been  making their way up the charts. “Trending  in  theft  right  now  are  automobiles,”  Stinson  said.  “What  we  noticed  with  vehicle  theft  is  targets  of  opportunity.  They  tend  to  be  in  conjunction with house break-ins. Lots of people hang  their  keys  right  inside  the  door  so  they’re  easily  accessible.  If  the  door  isn’t  double  locked  and  it’s  easy access for a break-in, they’re popping the lock,

continue to serve. “Our military personnel are always there for us,” Mandell said. “There’s never hesitation, never a lapse in service, and never a question when America asks our military to fight for our freedom. “They go when they know they might not come home, and they go when they know it’s not the popular thing to do,” Mandell added. After the speeches, the firing detail fired a 21-gun volley, and the bugler played taps, followed by a moment of silence in honor of those who have fallen. Those service members buried at the Luxembourg cemetery “share a special heritage and common bond with the Soldiers of today,” O’Connor said. “The young men and women who signed up to serve their country over the past 13 years did so knowing the risks were high and did so in the name of liberty.” Veterans Day is celebrated each year on Nov. 11 and coincides with other holidays celebrated around the world, such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which mark the end of World War I. The federal holiday honors the service of all U.S. military veterans and is observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the precise time hostilities in World War I ended with the official beginning of the armistice with Germany.

WORD Scramble Unscramble these Thanksgiving terms

Capt. Spanky: Thanks for reading Hello, Team Ramstein! Next week is Thanksgiving. It’s like a free day to eat as much as I want without feeling bad about it afterward. If I wore pants and a belt, I know I would be loosening them up after my Thanksgiving dinner. Though food is a big reason many people look forward to this holiday, I would like to take this time to go back to the holiday’s roots and reflect on some of the things I’m thankful for this year. First, I’m thankful for my readers! It may not seem like much to pick up a Kaiserslautern American and read it, but you give this little officer something to look forward to every week. I get to share my experiences, hopes and dreams with you every week. I am also thankful for the men and women, both military and civilian, who are serving our country and willing to share their lives, not only with our staff, but also with you, our readers. I am thankful for my family and friends. I think it goes without saying, but I don’t think we can ever

speak their praises enough. Behind every Airman, Soldier, Sailor and Marine, there is a support system of some kind that allows them to focus on their mission. I have my humans, and I try my best to show them my affection and appreciation. Through the good and bad times, there is almost always something for which we can be thankful. Take this time to consider the things you are thankful for, and if it is a person, maybe tell them! Until next time, happy Thanksgiving!

Recipe of the week Schnitzel in a bed of vegetables Servings 4 INGREDIENTS: 500 grams broccoli, washed 3 carrots, peeled and washed 1 medium onion, diced Salt and white pepper, to taste 4 Schweine Schnitzel (pork filets) 200 grams Schlagsahne (heavy whipping cream) 2 slices cooked ham 100 grams Emmenthaler cheese, grated 1 tablespoon light Sossenbinder (gravy thickener) 2 tablespoons bread crumbs 1 tablespoon butter DIRECTIONS: • Heat oven to 175 degrees Celsius/350 degrees Fahrenheit. • Wash the broccoli and carrots. Break the broccoli into flourettes. Peel the carrots and slice thin. Peel the onion and dice. • Put broccoli and carrots into a pot filled with about 375 milliliters of salted water. Cover and boil for about 5 minutes. Drain the vegetables and save the water. • Rinse the Schnitzel and pat dry with paper towels. Heat oil in a large frying pan and brown the Schnitzel lightly on both sides. Season with

salt and white pepper. • Spray a casserole dish with baking spray. Arrange the broccoli, carrots and the Schnitzel in casserole dish. • Brown the onions in the same pan you browned the meat. Add a little bit of the leftover water from the vegetables and then stir in the Schlagsahne (heavy whipping cream). Season with salt and white pepper. Bring to a boil and let cook for about 3 minutes. • Cut the ham into strips. Grate the cheese and mix about 50 grams of the cheese into the hot sauce. Thicken the sauce with the Light Sossenbinder (gravy thickener). Season with additional salt and pepper if needed. Fold the ham into the sauce. • Pour the sauce over the vegetables and Schnitzel. Spread the remaining cheese and the bread crumbs over the top of the casserole. Cut up butter and dab it over the top of the cheese. • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. • Note: You can substitute corn starch if you don’t have Sossenbinder, but remember to mix it with cold water before adding it to your hot sauce. You can also substitute the Schnitzel with chicken or turkey breasts.

Ring in the holidays by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Walking through the center of town, shoppers can tell Christmas is only a few weeks away. Window displays show holiday decorations, and Christmas markets in stores offer anything having to do with the holidays, such as ornaments, Christmas cookies and chocolate Santa Clauses. In Germany, outdoor Christmas markets are special events taking place during the pre-Christmas season. They consist of little wooden booths and houses decorated with fir tree garlands and light bulbs. During the markets, vendors sell traditional Christmas items, such as ornaments, candles, angels, Advent wreaths and nutcrackers. Shoppers also find ideas for Christmas gifts, such as wooden toys, puppets, handmade pottery, handcrafted leather items, glass products, jewelry and more. Typical smells shoppers experience when strolling along the booths are the smells of roasted chestnuts, cinnamon waffles, Thüringer bratwurst and “Glühwein,” which is a typical winter drink of heated red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks.

at German Christmas markets

The first Christmas market in the KMC to open this season is the one in Kaiserslautern, which is set up between Stiftskirche and Schillerplatz. Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel will officially open the market at 6 p.m. Monday at the stage on Schillerplatz. The market will continue through Dec. 22, and then continue as New Year’s market from Dec. 27 to 30. Each day, the Christmas market will offer an entertainment program. “It is very important to us that the entertaining program shows tradition and continuity,” said Alexander Hess from the project office for city events. A variety of music bands and carol singers will perform on the stage on Schillerplatz. Performers will be Stephan Flesch and Markus Ziegler, Rick Cheyenne and Volker Klimmer. The diversified program will reach from Christmas music to wonderful rhythms from all over the world. Artisans and sculptors will present their creative works. On Thursdays, animals from

the Kaiserslautern Zoo will create a Nativity scene. “Those looking for Christmas presents will have fun Nov. 30, when stores will offer Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.,” Hess said. The Kaiserslautern Christmas market will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; on Sundays

the market will be open from 1 to 10 p.m. Christmas markets in smaller towns usually don’t open until the afternoon. The history of Christmas markets dates back to the 14th century. After farmers had sold their crop, they paid their workers. After attending worship

services during Advent, those workers spent their money right away at little markets set up around the church. The most common items offered were sweets and toys. There were also craftsmen selling baskets, pottery, spices, clothes and Christmas tree ornaments.

Germans observe Advent traditions For more info visit our website

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

dvent season begins Nov. 30 and continues for four weeks until Christmas. The word Advent comes from the Latin verb “advenare,” which means “to arrive” and indicates the coming of Christ. Germans observe numerous traditions during Advent. Lighting candles on the Advent wreath is one of them. The first candle is lit the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which is Nov. 30. The original Advent wreath is made of fir tree branches decorated with four candles, fir cones, ribbons and little Christmas ornaments. Today, Advent wreaths of different shapes are made of different materials and placed in homes, stores, offices, public buildings and churches. The history of the Advent wreath goes back to northern Germany in 1839, when Johann Hinrich Wichern, the founder of the Evangelist Home Mission and a juvenile home, created the first wreath made of wood and decorated with 24 candles — four big white ones for Sundays and little red ones to be lit on weekdays. Also visible in windows during this season are wooden arches with candles. They originate in the Erzgebirge mountains, where in the 17th century miners started to create these items after working in dark mines for many years. Another tradition observed by children is the Advent calendar. Starting Dec. 1, children open a door on the calendar each day until Christmas Eve, when traditionally German children receive their gifts. The history of the Advent calendar is more than 100 years old. It was invented by a mother in Munich, whose son Gerhard, as soon as the first candle of the Advent wreath was lit, kept asking when Santa Claus would come and bring the gifts. Gerhard Lang’s mother had to think of something to make him understand when the waiting time was over. She designed a cardboard box on which she drew 24 squares. She explained to little Gerhard that each square meant getting up once and going to bed again. She even sewed a cookie onto each square to sweeten up the waiting time. From then on, Gerhard’s mother had to design a calendar every year until she thought he was too old for it.

Advent calendars help count down the days until Christmas. Children open the first door Dec. 1.

At the turn of the century, Gerhard Lang founded, together with a partner, a lithographic art publishing company. When business wasn’t good anymore, he remembered his mother’s idea and brought the “Munich Christmas calendar” onto the market in 1904. Its subtitle was “The 24 Waiting Days,” and it was sold for 30 pfennigs (about 15 euro cents) in stationary shops. Today, different kinds of Advent calendars are available — cardboard calendars, felt calendars with filled pockets, 24 bags hung up on a string or 24 little houses set up like a town. The baking of Christmas cookies is another tradition during Advent. There is a large variety — cookies with nuts, almonds, chocolate, marmalade, nougat, vanilla or marzipan. Traditional butter cookies are made in the shape of Christmas motifs such as stars, Christmas trees, candles, bells and snowmen. Other baked goods only offered during pre-Christmas time are Dresdner Stollen, a cake filled with raisins, candied lemon peel and orange peel, and gingerbread, or “Lebkuchen,” which is known all over the world. My family isn’t the largest out there, but it isn’t the smallest either, and every last one of them means the world to me. My childhood was filled with joy, kindness and discipline when warranted. But most of all it was bursting with more love than anyone could ever hope for. I would do anything for my family, because they are my rock and my foundation. By joining the Air Force, we all knew it meant I wasn’t going to be home for holidays, birthdays and other major milestones and that I could end up being stationed half way across the

world for a long period of time, which is exactly what happened. I hit my three-year mark two months ago and have been serving in the Air Force for nearly 1,200 days, and less than 30 of those days has been spent at home with the ones I love. The last time I went home was due to my grandmother passing away. She was my last living grandparent and the only one to see me fulfill my dream of joining the Air Force. It was because of the support from my Air Force family that I was able to get a flight home for the memorial service. Not even being on U.S. soil for a full six days, it was heart-wrenching to leave my grieving family so quickly. As soon as I stepped off the plane back in Germany I was surrounded by my friends and co-workers, who assured me I wasn’t alone during that

time. Keeping me busy by taking me to dinner, my friends kept my mind off of things by giving me the latest gossip and, ultimately, lifting my spirits. My entire Air Force career has been exceptional. With a great job and even better assignment, I truly can’t complain. But if I get frustrated at work when things don’t go as planned, when I feel like I am getting in trouble or even when I am having issues with my relationships (people do realize there is a “read receipt” on Facebook right?), sometimes I can’t talk to my immediate family right away. That’s where my Air Force family has proved time and time again that they are always right beside me. They will never be able to replace my family back home, but they provide a healthy alternative.

Coming up on the holidays, I think about being back home with my family more than ever. It has now been roughly a year and a half since I have been home, and the third time in a row I have spent the holiday season away from my loved ones. It’s hard to be away for so long, but I know I can always turn to my family here to help cheer me up and keep me fit to fight. Last year all my friends had a huge Thanksgiving dinner together, spent Christmas day cooking and playing board games, and went to Berlin for New Year’s. We may not be blood related, but we are all family nonetheless. We joke and laugh with each other, and we even complain and bicker. They are my Air Force family, and they have gotten me through the good times and the bad.

10 tips for Thanksgiving safety by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

amily and friends excitedly gather to show their gratitude, ovens are working overtime and savory aromas fill the air. Thanksgiving has arrived once again, and here are some tips from the 86th Airlift Wing Safety office to help keep the celebration — and you — out of the emergency room. • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and children should stay three feet away. • Make sure children stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over children, toys, pocketbooks or bags. • Keep knives out of the reach of children. • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate

warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button. The NFPA also discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. For more safety tips and information on fire prevention during the holidays, visit www.nfpa.org.

Let puppy buyers beware Some people might think a puppy is a wonderful Christmas present — for themselves or their children. Acquiring a new puppy should be a joyous event. However, it is important for buyers to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who sell puppies. Regrettably, some of these puppies become sick or even die shortly after their purchase, resulting in large veterinary bills and heartbroken buyers. Here are a few helpful hints to increase the likelihood of making the right choice when buying a puppy: • Purchase your puppy from a local source. Make sure you meet with the seller and write down the seller’s name, full address and phone number. Ask the seller for a list of references that includes previous buyers and other breeders. • Visit the puppy two or three times before making the purchase. This will allow you to check out the facility more than once and will also let you better understand the animal’s actual temperament and health. Insist on seeing the mother and also inspect her. • Examine both the puppy’s and the mother’s vaccination records. If the record is in a foreign language, make sure to ask a local veterinarian’s office what the vaccinations cover. Also, take notes as to the vaccination dates and the age of the animal when it was vaccinated as this will help the vet’s office verify that the

animals are on an adequate vaccination schedule. • Inspect the actual pedigree. Pedigrees should have both the VDH (Verband fuer Hundewesen) and FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) symbols and the dogs with these pedigrees must be identified by either an individual tattoo or be microchipped. These identification numbers must appear

in the pedigree as well as the numbers from the animal’s ancestors. For further advice, consult with a veterinarian. Also, remember if one of the owner’s in the household is German, the puppy needs to be registered with German authorities. (Courtesy of the 86th Mission Support Group)

The Kingfish notched another victory, scoring 530 points to Berlin’s 190. In addition to winning the meet, five new team records were set. Ellis Burrill, 8, broke Annika Zimmerer’s 2012 record of 7:51.01 in the 400meter freestyle with a new time of 7:32.37. Matthew Cembrano, 12, set a new mark in the 200 free with a time of 2:29.49. Gabriel Ayala, 10, broke Jaden Francis’ record in

the 800-meter free by 1.7 seconds. Andrew Hendrickson and Leomar Ayala, 10, traded off records, with Hendrickson taking Leomar Ayala’s crown in the 100-meter free and the 200-meter individual medley, with time of 1:14.58 and 3:07.54. Leomar Ayala broke Hendrickson’s record in the 200-meter free with a time of 2:40.77. Other swimmers who had terrific days included Matthew Hall, 11, who posted five personal best times. Ryleigh Brooking, 8, Matthew Pollmiller, 15, and Scott Rustenhaven,

15, each posted four. A special treat this meet was the presence of three swimmers from the Czech Republic, friends of the Hendrickson family, longtime Kingfish members. Vanessa Bouzek, Pavel Bouzek and Lilly Kucera, all 8, had never before swam in competition. Despite their exhibition status, they turned in times that made other swimmers sit up and take notice, with Vanessa Bouzek posting a time at the top of the board in the 50 and 100meter freestyle events, Pavel Bouzek at the top in the 50-meter free, and
