Community celebrates German-American Day Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Sara Keller 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Leadership from the KMC joined the Kaiserslautern German-American and International Women’s Club, the Atlantic Academy Kaiserslautern, the Docu Center Ramstein and key leaders from local communities around Ramstein to celebrate German-American Day Nov. 5 in Landstuhl. German-American Day was designated by former president Ronald Reagan to remember Oct. 6, 1683, when 13 German families arrived near Philadelphia and founded Germantown, the first German settlement in the new world, and to honor the contributions of German immigrants in the progress of America since. Today, Germans and Americans come together to honor the relationship developed in the Kaiserslautern community since the first U.S. aircraft arrived at Ramstein in 1952. “It is our great pleasure to host German-American Day here in Landstuhl,” said Dr. Peter Degenhardt, Landstuhl Union Community mayor. “We are more than pleased to have you here because Germans and Americans have been living together for quite a long time, which has already brought a good relationship. However, to keep that relationship up means we have to work on it. We have to keep it alive with activities, events and discussions. Thank

86 AW Safety office conducts motorcycle safety rally Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Airlift Wing Safety office conducted a motorcycle safety rally Nov. 4 on Kapaun. The event gave KMC motorcyclists additional tools to become safer and more disciplined riders. “The purpose was to have all our riders, young and old, come out and share and learn some new techniques with safe driving practices for motorcycles,” said Senior Master Sgt. Shuntesia Dupree, 86th Airlift Wing Safety office superintendent. “It was open to anybody: amateurs, novices, anybody. Thinking about getting a motorcycle? Come on out and see what you can do.” In the event riders encounter potential road hazards, they would need to know how to deal with them, which is why they spent time practicing breaking, maneuvering and maintaining positive control of their motorcycles, Dupree said. The safety office teamed up with local police and RiderCoaches from the KMC to conduct the event. RiderCoaches are certified trainers who have completed a training and safety course with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. The Polizei taught various safety

maneuvers to the RiderCoaches, who would then mimic the movements and train the other riders in attendance. Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Hunt, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flightline expediter, said he enjoyed learning new methods and training regimens from their German partners. “Their exercises out here are very challenging, and they’ve been a lot of fun to work on and to practice!” said Hunt, who also serves as president of the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club chapter 29. One of the maneuvers the RiderCoaches learned during the rally

was a high-speed evasion movement, which would be used in case there was a sudden obstruction in the rider’s path. “High-speed swerving is essential,” Hunt said. “There’s a number of times where you’re going down the road and there’s an animal. You have to maneuver quickly, and the breaks aren’t always the best option. Sometimes it is the better option to swerve and get around the object.” Hunt said the safety rally was just one of the avenues expert riders use to mentor bikers concerning safety while riding. “We volunteer through the 86th

This partnership is truly important to us,” Moore said. “Your work allows the American community to stay informed of all the things that happen in the local community and different ways we can share in German culture.” Moore also thanked the hosts of the event and highlighted some of the amazing work the military and local community have been able to accomplish over the years. He mentioned Ramstein’s reinvigorated apprenticeship program, the military police partnership within the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron and shared cultural

events on and off base. “Thank you, as well, to all who are with us today,” Moore said. “It warms my heart to see so many friends and family here to celebrate GermanAmerican Day, where we honor the lasting friendship and commitment between our two nations. It is my pleasure to represent both the thousands of Airmen on Ramstein and the more than 57,000 service members and families of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The friendship between our two nations is strong, and I look forward to continuing to work and live together, making our community a wonderful place to live.”

She also expressed her excitement in seeing the Germans and Americans work together to develop better riders in the KMC. “I could tell just by watching them (the Americans) that they were excited to see what they (the Germans) had,” Dupree said. “The purpose of having the Polizei come out was to build the joint relationship and trust environment. “It builds that cohesive relationship of knowing that the motorcycle team is one big family,” Dupree continued. “They have their own culture of helping one another stay safe.” Whether they are novices new to the motorcycle family or veteran riders with much wear and tear underneath their tires, the 86 AW Safety office wants to instill discipline into each rider in the KMC.

In a ceremony described as a re-designation, reassignment and reorganization all in one, the 2nd Air Postal Squadron on Ramstein left the 86th Mission Support Group and joined Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe Nov. 9. “This is an important day for the 86th AW, the (U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa) staff and, most importantly, the Airmen of the air postal squadron,” said Col. Jonathan Sutherland, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa director of communications, who presided over the ceremony. “This is a unique ceremony and one that you won’t see very often. In fact, I’ve been in the Air Force for 30 years and have only attended less than a handful of these ceremonies over the years.” The ceremony gave the base a chance to say thank you to the Airmen of the squadron for their superb efforts, added Sutherland. The squadron was redesignated as the USAFEAFAFRICA Air Postal Squadron to mimic the change in authority and was reorganized because of a merger with the A6 Postal Operations Branch in USAFE headquarters. “This move consolidates USAFE-AFAFRICA postal operations into one organization,” said Lt. Col. James Huso, USAFE-AFAFRICA AIRPS commander. “Ensuring concentrated efforts for every objective under a single Field

Now we’ll own the entire process: training, inspection, operational planning, policy oversight and direct liaison with the Military Postal Service Agency and other federal agencies for all Air Force postal operations within our theater.” The change was made due

to disjointed postal operations, Huso said. “Not only do we gain the obvious efficiencies from being in a single organization, but also the establishment of the new FOA results in a reduction of personnel and financial requirements,” Huso said. Since its foundation in 1952, the squadron has embraced change, experiencing activations, re-designations and organizational changes from various locations in Germany and from headquarters to the wing and back, Sutherland said. Huso added that while they will miss the outstanding leadership and partnership with the entire 86 MSG team, he looks

However, traffic flow may be impacted during construction phase changes when lane switching or new installation of traffic safety barriers are installed. “Cold, rainy weather has started and will get worse before it gets better,” Hernandez said. “Snow and ice will make it more difficult to stop a moving car, and if traffic is getting backed up, if one person isn’t paying attention, there could be a major pileup.” The project is scheduled to be completed during the second half of 2019. The Joint Travel Regulation was recently updated to streamline the process for using restricted airfare when City Pair fares are not available. Approving officials are no longer required to use the Restricted Airfare Checklist when City Pair is not available. Due to different restrictions on overseas flights, travelers should request Commercial Travel Office assistance within the Defense Travel System module when booking flights. Travelers should check with their approving official for approval of orders to ensure proper ticketing. For more information, visit www.defensetravel. dod.mil/site/news.cfm?ID=291.

Employees of Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern and Stadtwerke Ramstein-Miesenbach, the city works in charge of electricity, gas and water, are currently visiting customers to read their meters. Every meter reader has a company badge customers can ask to see. If meter readers are unable to reach customers at home, they will leave a message. Those customers are asked to read the meters themselves and report the readings to Stadtwerke as soon as possible. Customers of Stadtwerke Ramstein-Miesenbach can email their meter readings to SK@Stadtwerke-Ramstein.de or visit www.stadtwerke-ramstein.de. Customers of Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern should email their meter readings to ablesung@swk-kl.de, visit www.swk24.de or call 0631-8001-1999. If customers don’t notify their city works, their consumption will be estimated. Officials ask customers to remove all objects in front of the meters to make the reading as easy as possible.

Since Nov. 1, customers must remove their eye glasses when taking a photo for a U.S. passport. This change in the requirement allows officials to more readily identify their customers. Photos of customers wearing eye glasses often have a glare on the lens. Glasses also create shadows on customers’ faces or block a portion of their eyes. Customers may wear glasses only in rare circumstances of medical necessity. In these cases, customers

Veterans Day is observed annually on Nov. 11 and commemorates military veterans who currently serve or have served the U.S. armed forces, including those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. According to the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, since World War I approximately 624,000 U.S. service members have been killed in action, battling in wars and conflicts. The Lorraine American Cemetery contains the buried remains of over 10,000 of them. It is the largest burial site of U.S. service members in Europe.

Stay informed, be prepared for winter weather by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Combating winter’s ice, snow and slush requires more attention than other seasons. Therefore, it is vital to stay informed on German standards for winter weather conditions and understand where to obtain base operations and weather updates. “We, as Americans, are guests in Germany and must follow all winter weather safety guidance,” said Lt. Col. Kyle Korver, 86th Mission Support Group deputy commander. “It’s every Airman’s responsibility to ensure the safety of their home, vehicle and family prior to inclement weather setting in. It’s the little things we can prepare for up front that could prove valuable when you really need it.” Late reporting and closure decisions are normally announced no later than 5 a.m. the day of a weather event. Early release decisions, likewise, are normally made by 10:30 a.m. KMC families may receive updated weather information and road conditions by several means. Families may call a hotline at 06371-47-2653 or on base at 480-COLD (2653). Families may also visit www.ramstein.af.mil and click on the weather tab. Army personnel may access their safety and road conditions on the Installation Management Command Europe website. Ramstein’s Facebook and Twitter pages are also a valuable resource for weather-related closures, as is the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

Facebook page. Families may also tune to Armed Forces Network Television and Radio 100.2 FM for weather closure updates. Finally, the Ramstein Air Base Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android phones provides live updated information on road conditions via push notifications. Another avenue to receive road condition and closure notifications is through the AtHoc system, which can be set up to send automated texts to your personal e-mail or phone. AtHoc is a masswarning notification system that makes it easier for all service members, civilian and contractor employees, and family members across Europe to receive emergency warnings and notifications specific to their geographic location. Anyone with a CAC can register for AtHoc notifications within the KMC from their work computer or from a computer with a CAC-reader at: https://warnings1.army. mil/SelfService/2026327. School buses often have difficulty traveling to some bus stops and low temperature areas may be dangerous to children waiting at bus stops. During periods of inclement weather, parents should check the above information sources for updates on road conditions and impacts on school bus operations. Regardless of the advertised road condition, safety is paramount, said Greg Fobell, 86 MSG plans and programs officer. “Since the KMC is comprised of fifty villages, keep in mind conditions in villages or cities may be distinctly different than conditions commuting to or on

base,” Fobell said. “Safety is paramount and if you don’t feel safe contact your supervisor.” There are several key items to be mindful of when preparing for a winter in the KMC. “Depending on your lease agreement, be aware that it is the off-base residence’s responsibility to keep their walkways clear,” Fobell said. “Tenants can be liable for injuries occurring on their property as a result of neglecting to keep their property cleared.” Keep a shovel, approved ice melting materials and sidewalks or driveway cleaning supplies on hand to maintain property. After clearing sidewalks or driveways, clean all frost and ice from windows before driving; German law requires snow removal from entire vehicle and may result in a citation. Also, security forces may deny snow-covered vehicles on base. As you drive, keep a safe distance around all vehicles to allow time to react in hazardous situations and drive according to road conditions, not necessarily the speed limit. “Remember, ice isn’t always visible when it is the color of the road,” Fobell said. “Sometimes, it doesn’t melt at the same rate in shaded areas as it may on road surfaces that are exposed to the sun.” Obtaining the appropriate tires is also essential to avoid roadway hazards. German law mandates that all motor vehicles must have all-season or winter tires mounted during winter conditions to prepare for snow,

ice, black ice, frost, and slush. The penalty for driving without the proper tires is €40 plus one point added to your license. KMC members must equip their vehicles with winter tires from October to Easter. Also, the danger in driving with worn or bald tires rises during the wet, cold weather season. Worn or bald tires can be deadly on wet roads and may result in hydroplaning because the grooves aren’t deep enough to channel water out from beneath the tread, and the tread skims the water’s surface. The minimum tire tread depth in accordance with German law is 1.6 millimeters yet recommends a minimum of 4.0 millimeters. To quickly measure the depth without a gauge, place a two euro coin in the groove of a tire. If the coin’s silver rim is visible, the tire’s depth is less than 3 millimeters and should be replaced. Furthermore, people should inspect their cars

thoroughly prior to the cold setting in, to include but not limited to brakes, wiper blades, emergency equipment and the inflation of the spare tire. For questions on how to further winterize your vehicle, contact the 86th Airlift Wing Safety office. School buses often have difficultly traveling to some bus stops, and low temperature areas may be dangerous to children waiting at bus stops. Caring for one another is essential to Airmen’s well-being this winter. The 86 MSG advises KMC families to stay informed on weather condition resources. “Situational awareness is a key aspect to maintaining mission readiness,” Korver said. “If you’re new to Germany or know of a KMC member new to the area, help them understand the winter conditions standards and the resources available to them. We need everyone’s help to look out for one another.”

AAFES innovates with new shipping process by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Army and Air Force Exchange Service kicked off a ship-from-store initiative to expedite orders for customers using ShopMyExchange.com in October on Ramstein. Orders will now process through the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center and ship via the military postal system, versus processing and shipping from stateside Exchange distribution centers. The new process reduces shipping times for customers not only locally but also regionally, and even those in deployed locations. Samantha Davis, KMCC manager, believes the new innovations in the program will benefit many people. “The program is designed to speed up the process between when customers order an item and when they receive it,” Davis said. “Customers will receive items they purchase online much quicker than before if the KMCC has it in stock.” AAFES customers are not the only ones who benefit from this initiative.

The Kaiserslautern Military Community Center’s ship-from-store program allows KMC members to have their items ordered off www.ShopMyExchange.com shipped from the KMCC. This will significantly shorten the time it takes for customers to receive their products.

Lt. Col. James Huso, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Air Postal Squadron commander, says the program will also benefit the Department of Defense. “When a package is sent from the U.S., the shipper only pays to move the item to one of the stateside mili-

tary mail gateways,” Huso said. “The DOD then pays to move the item to your military post office. Under this initiative, the item is already in theater, so the trans-Atlantic cost is removed.” With the new shipment process, members of the KMC can receive

orders quicker, and it happens with the help of hard-working Airmen here. For any question about the new shipping process or how to order items online, contact AAFES customer service by visiting www. ShopMyExchange.com/mobile/ customer-service/contact-us.

AFAP town hall tackles quality-of-life issues

Angie Shinkle, Army Family Action Plan working group facilitator, discusses an issue with her team prior to the AFAP town hall Nov. 8 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. AFAP gives people in the local Army community an opportunity to influence the environment where they live and work every day by participating in the program.

Story and photos by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Child care waiting lists and Exceptional Family Member respite care were two of several key topics addressed at the annual Army Family Action Plan town hall Nov. 8 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. “AFAP serves as a local grassroots method to identify quality-oflife issues affecting the Army family,” said Laura Batule, Baumholder Army

Community Service site lead and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz AFAP coordinator. “It gives people in the KMC Army community an opportunity to influence the environment where they live and work every day by participating in the program.” Lengthy overseas child care waiting lists was an issue addressed by AFAP working group members. addressed the issue and recommended a new Department of Defense process allowing parents to pre-register their children on local Child Development Center waiting lists upon receiving military orders. Creating lists of certified and recognized German child care providers and resources available on the local economy were proposed as well. The child care issue would directly impact AFAP working group member Sgt. 1st Class Ernestine Lewis, sexual assault response coordinator with the

Erin Cruz, Army Family Action Plan working group spokesperson and junior at Ramstein High School, briefs garrison leadership regarding a teen issue submitted to the program. AFAP is a proven way for Soldiers, retirees, Department of the Army civilians and their families to let Army leadership know their quality-of-life issues and concerns. Throughout the year, issues can be submitted to AFAP at www.MyArmyOneSource.com.

are and help find solutions and come up with recommendations.” Another issue submitted for discussion was TRICARE support for Exceptional Family Member level 1 and 2 respite care. In overseas military locations, respite care will be eliminated June 30, 2017, for dependents diagnosed with level 1 — mild — and level 2 — moderate — special needs. This issue impacts the resiliency and quality of life for families with special needs loved ones. The working group recommended the Department of the Army reconsider overseas respite care funding for levels 1 and 2. They also suggested possible TRICARE funding for these levels. AFAP connects leadership with real-life concerns in addition to what they are told in unit formations and Family Readiness Group meetings, Batule said. “It gives everyone a voice and shows firsthand our Army leadership cares about those who serve in the ranks, retirees, DOD civilian employees and their families who love and support them,” Batule said. AFAP truly works, said Deborah Reynolds, deputy commander of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “Since 1983, nearly 700 issues have been entered into the AFAP system,” Reynolds explained. “Of the 700, 528 have been resolved and led to the enactment of 129 pieces of legislation, 187 policy changes and 212 improved programs and services. In short, AFAP works because it starts at the grassroots level with our garrison and units, and issues are oftentimes elevated to the highest policy and lawmaking levels.” Some AFAP concerns came from a younger audience, said Ryan Elegood, a junior at Kaiserslautern High School. “Our AFAP working group addressed Child and Youth Services career avenues. There is a current program called Junior Staff on Landstuhl offering rudimentary vocational opportunities — working at the gym and kitchen,” Elegood said. “We wanted to expand on that and make it more career-specific, to include health science, robotics, program coding, mechanics or other opportunities that can be translated into future careers. We wanted an improved program that could help high school students with possible internships.” The more people who get involved with AFAP, the more issues will be addressed and more improvements will be made, Batule said. “Everyone brings experiences and observations from other installations as well as life through their lens,” Batule concluded. “The more diverse our annual AFAP town hall, the better we can address issues and think outside the box for more efficient, fiscally responsible solutions.” To submit concerns or check the status of submitted AFAP issues, visit www.MyArmyOneSource.com.

Pumpkin Stew Ingredients (for 4 people)

1 cup celery stalks, sliced 1 cup sliced leaks 1 cup carrots, diced into ½-inch squares 1 cup onions, diced 1 tablespoon of summer savory 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely diced 2 cups green beans, whole 1 pound butternut pumpkin, diced into 1-inch cubes without skin 1 pound Hokkaido pumpkin, diced into 1-inch cubes without skin ½ pound chickpeas 2 stalks rosemary 5 tablespoons of olive oil ¾ cup creme fraiche Salt and pepper to taste 1 1/2 liters of vegetable broth To make it a bit more tart and sweet use 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of honey In a small pot, heat 1 tablespoon of oil, add the rosemary and let it slightly simmer. Then let this cool, add the creme fraiche and

some pepper, put aside and let cool. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pot, add the pumpkin and let it roast on all sides until it is nicely browned. Remove pumpkin from pot and set aside. Now heat the rest of the oil, add onions and carrots and let this simmer for 1-2 minutes. Now add garlic, celery and leak and let it simmer until soft. In a separate large pot, heat the vegetable broth. Add summer savory and pumpkin back to large pot. Add the apple cider vinegar and season with salt, pepper and honey. Add the vegetable broth and the chick peas and let it simmer for 25 minutes. If you have fresh green beans, boil them for 5 minutes. Then put them in an ice bath so they keep the nice green color. Add the green beans to the large pumpkin pot. Taste for more seasoning. To serve, use deep plates or bowls for the stew and top with a dollop of creme fraiche.

7th MSC participates in NATO’s CRNA GORA 2016

Staff Sgt. Camille Foggy, a survey team chief with the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Mission Support Command, takes a photo of a suspected chemical compound Nov. 2 during the NATO European-Atlantic Disaster Coordination Center Consequence Management field exercise CRNA GORA 2016.

Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Chlosta 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs PODGORICA, Montenegro — This tiny Balkan nation of about 620,000 people hosted the annual NATO European-Atlantic Disaster Coordination Center Consequence Management field exercise. CRNA GORA 2016 included 33 Army Reserve Soldiers and one civilian from the 7th Mission Support Command, with 680 participants from 32 countries, during the training event Oct. 31 through Nov. 3. The 7th MSC and its Medical Support Unit-Europe, the 773rd Civil Support Team, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, 209th and 2500th Digital Liaison Detachments conducted foreign consequence management operations in response to a simulated flooding event at sites in and around the capital city of Podgorica. “(The exercise) is designed to bring together many, many nations to practice civil emergency type activities,” said Dr. John Manza, NATO’s deputy assistant secretary general for operations. According to Manza, the eight disaster response sites were chosen to test the various teams on search and rescue, CBRN response and water rescue. “It’s an opportunity for different countries to come together and participate in a Consequence Management Field Exercise,” said Col. Tyra Harding, 7th MSC officer in charge. On the first day, the teams conducted

classroom and familiarization training. “The Medical Support Unit-Europe is here coordinating with other countries and seeing how we can integrate and supplement and work together to provide medical support in the case of a natural disaster,” said Capt. Allison Boss, MSU-E. The second day of CRNA GORA 2016 started when multiple disaster sites called for assistance in response to the flooding scenario injects from the EADRCC exercise staff. The Rogami bridge site, next to the river Zeta, simulated an ambulance crash with the vehicle on its side along the steep river bank. The Montenegro Onsite Commander Darko Zizzic, a Montenegro rescue 3 level commander, called for medical responders, search and rescue teams, a boat rescue team with divers and a Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear identification unit. The 7th MSC sent three MSU-E Soldiers to assist the search and rescue team from Azerbaijan and the Israeli water rescue team. Around the same time, the 773rd CST was requested by a different Montenegro onsite commander to go to the former schoolhouse in Lazine to check on a suspected chemical factory or ‘meth lab’ with the Armenian CBRN team. “The communication between us and them was good,” said Staff Sgt. Yulolanda Carey, survey team chief, 773rd CST. “You get to incorporate some of what they know with what we know.”

The combined Armenian and U.S. teams conducted perimeter monitoring and site characterization at the dilapidated schoolhouse. “It was interesting to see their (Armenian CBRN team) process as compared to ours,” said Staff Sgt. Patrick McNeely, 773rd survey team member. Meanwhile, back at the Rogami Bridge, the 7th MSC medics were part of a team of the Israel, Azerbaijan and U.S. personnel. “When the mission was clear, we divided the team,” said Yosef Dekalo, commander of the Israeli fire department search and rescue team. As the sun was setting and the temperature dropped, the teams learned the nearby bridge was unusable for

the training scenario due to the simulated floods. So, the 7th MSC medics crossed the Zeta river onboard an Israeli water rescue team Zodiac boat. Once on the opposite side, the U.S. MSU-E partnered with the Azerbaijan SAR members to traverse a very steep river embankment and triage patients in the dark. “I enjoyed working with them as a team,” said Abbasov Ibrahim, an Azerbaijan Army search and rescue worker. “I learned some things from them.” The next day, the 773rd CST, the Armenian CBRN unit and the Spanish Emergency Military Unit were called out to conduct a CBRN site survey at the Lazine site. The 773rd CST partnered with the Armenian CBRN team for the site survey and the Spanish UME conducted decontamination. “It was very nice to work with the U.S. Army team,” said Senior 1st Lt. Tigran Gevorgyan, Ministry of Emergency Situation of Republic of Armenia, CBRN Division. The final day was held at the Plavnica Eco-Resort south of Podgorica. Events included static displays, a demonstration of CBRN capabilities and a press conference. “I think it is so important to show that NATO is not just about cooperative defense; it is also involved in dealing with natural disasters, helping countries to address terrible situations that arise,” said NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller during her post ceremony press conference. “I thank Montenegro for the terrific work that your people did, your teams did, to organize this important exercise.” Montenegro is currently in the NATO accession process and is expected to become an official member in the spring of 2017, Gottemoeller said.

USAFE chiefs meet for development Story and photo by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Chief master sergeants from around U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa met Nov. 2 and 3 at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. The Chiefs’ Business Symposium was held to give senior enlisted advisors an opportunity to discuss hot topics and share concerns of the enlisted force among colleagues. “With this event, we wanted to make sure all chiefs in our area of responsibility had an opportunity to discuss concerns or changes within the enlisted force,” said Chief Master Sgt. Roger Thorton, 603rd Air and Space Operations Center superintendent. “The other purpose was to give chiefs an opportunity to learn and develop themselves as leaders to maintain the standard of excellence the Air Force requires.” During the two-day symposium, attendees discussed topics such as the Transition Assistance Program, enlisted professional military education, dealing with thought processes and biases and were able to partake in discussion with a command chief

panel and a commander’s panel. “The panels allowed us to get different perspectives on certain sub-

jects, to include EPME and changes to the enlisted structure,” Thorton said. “We would bounce some of the

same ideas off of both groups and get not entirely different answers but different perspectives of the topics. It allows us to see how others think.” While the panels help put some topics into perspective, the key to chiefs’ development was the communication between peers in open discussions. “While we were sharing ideas, we got to learn how other chiefs dealt with scenarios differently than how we may have done it and then compare results,” Thorton said. “By developing ourselves and honing on these perspectives, we can build a consistency on how we operate.” After providing senior enlisted advisors a medium to connect and explore different opinions, the importance of the symposium could be summed up by the USAFEAFAFRICA command chief. “Developing the next generation of leadership is the most important responsibility we have as chiefs,” said Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth Wright, USAFE-AFAFRICA command chief. “The first step in doing that is continuing to (develop) ourselves.”

Ring in holiday season at German Christmas markets by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Walking through grocery stores, shoppers can tell Christmas is only a few weeks away. The shelves are filled with Christmas cookies, gingerbread and chocolate Santa Clauses. Christmas markets are soon to start. They consist of little wooden booths and houses decorated with fir tree garlands and lights. Vendors sell traditional Christmas items, including ornaments, candles, angels, Advent wreaths and nutcrackers. Shoppers also find ideas for Christmas gifts such as wooden toys, puppets, handmade pottery, handcrafted leather items, glass products, jewelry and more. Typical smells shoppers experience when strolling along the booths are the smells of roasted chestnuts, cinnamon waffles, Thueringer bratwurst and “Gluehwein,” which is a typical winter drink. It’s a heated red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks and helps to warm up. The first Christmas market in the KMC will be in combination with a gluehwein fest in Olsbruecken starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. A much bigger Christmas market will be the one in Kaiserslautern, set up between Stiftskirche and Schillerplatz. Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel will officially open the market at 6 p.m. Monday at the stage on Schillerplatz. It will run through Dec. 23 and then continue as a New Year’s market Dec. 27 to 30. Each day, the Christmas market will offer activities and entertainment on the stage at Schillerplatz and in the fest area in front of Stiftskirche.

The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern is set up around Stiftskirche and on Schillerplatz. It opens 6 p.m. Monday on the stage near the church.

“Visitors will be able to enjoy a diversified and full entertaining program,” said Alexander Hess, chief of the project office for city events.

“The musical repertoire will range from Christmas music to inspiring rhythms from around the world. Performers will be Stephan Flesch and Markus Ziegler, Rick Cheyenne, Hubertus von Garnier and Sebastian Niklas.” Artisans and sculptors will present their creative works in the yard of Stiftskirche, where an open fire will provide a special atmosphere. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, animals from the Kaiserslautern Zoo will create a nativity scene. “Those looking for Christmas presents will have fun Nov. 27, when stores will offer Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.,” Hess said. The Kaiserslautern Christmas market will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; Sundays it will open 1 to 10 p.m. Christmas markets in smaller towns usually don’t open until the afternoon. The history of Christmas markets goes back to the 14th century. After farmers had sold their crop, they paid their workers. After attending worship services during Advent, those workers spent their money right away at little markets set up around the church. Most common items offered were sweets and toys. There were also craftsmen selling baskets, pottery, spices, clothes and Christmas tree ornaments. Christmas markets in the KMC and close vicinity: • Alsenborn, Nov. 25 to 27 • Alsenz, Dec. 3 and 4
