721st Air Mobility Operations Group: No faster than safe by Tech. Sgt. Jocelyn Ford 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Recently, the 721st Air Mobility Operations Group held a safety down day on Ramstein Air Base. Each of the organizations under the 721st AMOG — the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 721st Aerial Port Squadron, 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron, and 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight participated, crafting events as they pertained to their job. The purpose of the down day was to allow 721st AMOG leaders to focus on growing their Airmen. They worked with the 618th Air Operations Center to minimize air traffic into and out of Ramstein for the day to ensure sufficient training was conducted and focus was directed to the material. “We needed this, and not just for the purpose of safety,” said Tech. Sgt. Joey Whatley, 721st AMXS C-Flight flight line expediter. “To actually limit See 721ST AMOG, Page 2

From NCO to Second Lieutenant Tech Sgt. Olivia Sandrini, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, command support staff and programs section chief, shows emotion at a surprise gathering recognizing her pending promotion to 2nd Lt., on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 1. Sandrini was one of five people in the Air Force to be selected by Senior Leader Enlisted Commission Program to be an Air Force officer.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Tech. Sgt. Olivia Sandrini, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, command support staff and programs section chief, received a call from Gen. Stephen W. Wilson, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, to inform her she had been selected to attend Officers Training School via the Senior Leader Enlisted Commission Program Nov. 1. Sandrini said she was stunned to find out she was one of five people in

the Air Force to be awarded this honor. “SLECP is a commissioning program that gives our top Air Force leaders an opportunity to hand-pick members of our enlisted force that demonstrate exceptional job performance, leadership ability, and the potential skills required of our commissioned officers,” said Maj. Brad Seehawer, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing executive officer. “There’s only a select few chosen each year, and it’s highly competitive.” See 2ND LIEUTENANT, Page 5

Page 2 721ST AMOG from Page 1 the amount of air flow coming in and out of here is a tremendous way to help these guys take a break and then talk about safety, sexual assault awareness and prevention, wingman training and have a little fun. It’s a great way to spend a day at work.” Getting away from a day of briefings, the day was filled with interactive sessions. “Throughout the Air Force sports and [recreation] is one of the mishap producers, so we started out the day with a fitness challenge and fun run,” said Tech. Sgt. Carlton Anthony, 721st AMXS safety noncommissioned officer in charge. Anthony said the unit made sure the Airmen knew how to stretch properly before a work out, cool down procedures, and to not push themselves beyond their limits even though members still have to meet Air Force physical fitness requirements. A risk assessment portion allowed Airmen to tell their stories of what they have faced on the road. “We had a lot of interaction between the sections and different maintainers with different past experiences and how to better prepare, how to plan and how to make sure you are

taking care of your team when you are on the road,” said Anthony. Having already touched the physical and social domains, master resilience trainers and resilience training assistants facilitated discussions on mental and spiritual resilience as the day progressed. “We talked about value based goal setting and making sure that people are also taking care of themselves by setting deliberate goals,” said Anthony. “Making sure they define what their values are to them, making time, setting goals for themselves and how to actually chart a path on how to reach those goals.” Airmen also competed against each other by forming relay teams; pushing stands, moving power carts and donning protective gear all in the safest way possible. The final task in the relay included reviewing aircraft records, another aspect of their daily activities that should never be overlooked. Senior Airman Isaiah Martinez, 721st AMXS communications navigation technician, said that from the day’s activities the Airmen gained a better general idea of safety topics and good cohesion. “It’s been a good, well-spent day so we can take this further in our careers,” said Martinez.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kyle Bennett, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, shares technical expertise with a British Royal Air Force member on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 26. Representatives from the RAF visited the 37th AS to engage in crosstalk concerning joint airborne operations.

British and U.S. Airmen exchanged operational expertise Oct. 26, on Ramstein Air Base. Royal Air Force members visited the 86th Airlift Wing’s 37th Airlift Squadron to familiarize themselves with U.S. airborne operation procedures. Loadmasters assigned to the 37th AS demonstrated their personnel airdrop techniques to the RAF Airmen. “It was an excellent experience having our British partners over,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kyle Bennett, 37th AS loadmaster. “With events like this it’s important to have two-way communication, and that’s what we had during the crosstalk.” Both the RAF and 37th AS operate C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. The recent meeting served as a medium of communication in which both sides can enhance their interoperability. Bennett expressed his optimism about the dialogue, saying he learned a lot from his British counterparts. “They shared some valuable expertise with us and we shared our knowledge with them as well,” he said. “I am confident this will lead to smoother and more effective joint operations in the future.”

86th AW fights for safety in mission execution Story and photo by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen assigned to 86th Airlift Wing safety office are responsible for ensuring wing personnel know how to conduct their operations as safely as possible. Of course, such an occupation is not without its stereotypes. “Some people say we’re the fun police,” said Master Sgt. Eric Morris, 86th AW safety office occupational safety section chief. “The truth is, we’re not out to get you. We’re not out to de-certify you or get you in trouble. We’re here to prevent mishaps and educate all personnel on what happened, and how to prevent it from happening again in the future.” The safety office identifies four disciplines of safety: occupational, flight, weapons, and human factors. Occupational safety covers all matters related to the workplace. Airmen in this field visit work areas, make sure everything is in line with safety regulations, and absent of unnecessary hazards. They also conduct investigations and write reports 2nd lieutenant from Page 1 Sandrini, a Detroit native, worked at a doctor’s office, but wanted a career that was more fulfilling. She decided to join the military. Sandrini is married with two children and has been in the military 12 years. “I wanted to provide a life for myself, independent of everyone else,” said Sandrini. “I initially signed for six years and had planned to get out after my contract ended. But after I went through basic, I realized this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” Sandrini said she wanted to become an Air Force officer because she wanted the ability to impact individual’s lives on a broader scale and use her voice to benefit the Air Force as a whole. Sandrini submitted a package twice to be accepted into officer training school, but this time decided to apply to the SLECP. Sandrini said she didn’t find out about the SLECP until after she submitted her second package, but she told herself she would take advantage of the program the next time around. “Sandrini leads from the front, she is a subject matter expert, deeply cares about Airmen under her supervision

in the event incidents occur. Flight safety handles everything related to aviation operations. Weapons safety covers matters pertaining to the Air Force’s arsenal — everything from small arms to large ordnance. Human factors is the most fluid of the four disciplines; it transcends and is an outstanding noncommissioned officer in this squadron,” said Lt. Col. Scott W. Gilliland, 721st AMXS commander. Sandrini has a bachelor’s degree in education and training and looks forward to being able to continue to learn and shape her future Airmen. When Sandrini first joined the military her family didn’t think she would succeed. After she graduated from basic as an honor graduate and 12 years later with a commission around the corner, they’re nothing but proud. “I know this sounds a little cliché, but I would tell any Airman who wants to become an officer or wants to accomplish any goal, to believe in themselves and don’t give up,” said Sandrini. “If you want it and are willing to work for it, you can accomplish anything.” Sandrini has earned the support and respect of her troops and leadership. “Because of her leadership potential, hard work and dedication throughout her career, she has earned this commission,” said Gilliland. “There is no doubt that Tech. Sgt. Sandrini will be a remarkable aircraft maintenance officer and will continue to be a phenomenal leader.”

each realm of safety and is present in most incidents. If a news article about a plane crash were to contain the words “pilot error,” that is an example of human factors contributing to a mishap. Morris gave an example of how a physical injury not only affects an individual, but that person’s unit as well.

“That time (spent on sick quarters) equates to a dollar value for the Air Force,” Morris said. “Someone also has to do their job for them because they’re at home putting ice on their ankle, or they’re on restricted duty for one month. There’s a monetary cost associated with that.” Senior Master Sgt. Shuntesia Dupree, 86th AW safety superintendent, calls upon all members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community to practice safety at all times. Safety and risk management principles encompass all three of the Air Force’s core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do, she said. “There is no rank in safety,” said Dupree. “From top to bottom, everyone has an obligation to practice good safety habits. You know the difference between right and wrong, and it’s your duty to uphold safety standards wherever you are at all times.” “Each day I go home knowing nobody got hurt is a good day for me,” Dupree added. “I think the world would be a better place if everyone worked safer and smarter.”

Tech Sgt. Olivia Sandrini, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, command support staff and programs section chief, receives a call from Gen. Stephen W. Wilson, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 1. Sandrini was selected to attend officer’s training school via the Senior Leader Enlisted Commission Program.

Gen. Goldfein meets with Ukrainian air force chief by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs In the latest example of the strong ties between the U.S. and Ukraine, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein held high-level discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, Col. Gen. Sergii Drozdov, at the Pentagon, Nov. 8. Drozdov’s visit underscored both Ukraine’s central role in a range of regional security matters, including those connected to Russia, and the country’s evolving relationship with the United States. Drozdov’s appearance in Washington also came less than a month after the U.S. Air Force participated in Clear Sky 2018, the first-ever multi-national joint military exercise held in Ukraine. While Goldfein and Drozdov discussed a range of issues, one topic was preeminent. “Russia’s aggression is not simply a matter for Ukraine,” Goldfein said in a public appearance, during which he and Drozdov met with Airmen and journalists. “It is a threat to the region, to Europe, to the United States and to the stability of the international order. … Our growing partnership and security cooperation with Ukraine supports our national defense strategy and promotes regional stability, security and international trust,” Goldfein said. Goldfein noted the recent exercise, saying it, “showcased the strong bond between the U.S. and Ukraine and how far the Ukrainian air force has come in their path towards NATO interoperability.” Like Goldfein, Drozdov highlighted the two nations’ resilient partnership and the shared desire to promote regional stability and security.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein and Colonel General Sergii Drozdov, Commander of the Ukrainian air force, talk to members of the press during a press conference at the Pentagon, Arlington, Va., Nov. 8. Photo by Wayne Clark

“Together with Gen. Goldfein we had a positive discussion on points of common interest,” Drozdov said through an interpreter. “We are finding new ways to support each other so we can withstand Russian aggression.” Ukraine has expressed a desire to join NATO, which is one reason the security collaboration with the U.S. is important. The success of Clear Sky 2018 is significant, as well, since one important requirement for membership is demonstrating interoperability. Goldfein said that a considerable portion of the discussion between the air chiefs focused on interoperability to ensure that “our systems and tactics and operations” mesh. If there was any doubt about the bonds connecting the U.S. Air Force to Ukraine, the presence at the event of five Ukrainian-born U.S. Airmen provided a vivid and human face.

Each Airman was introduced to Drozdov and Goldfein and each brought a compelling story. Staff Sgt. Anastasia L. Rash came to the U.S. in 1996 and joined the Air Force because she “wanted to pave a path towards a better future and to serve the country” that she now calls home. Rash is currently assigned to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, and is a control and communications supervisor with the 621st Contingency Response Support Squadron. Senior Airman Lena Sanner was born in Ukraine and was adopted by an American family at age 14. She is an installation patrolman attached to the 87th Security Forces Squadron at JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Airman First Class Brayden Nolte joined the Air Force in 2017. He is attached to JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst’s

87th Civil Engineer Squadron as a water fuels system maintenance apprentice. Like Sanner, he was born in Ukraine but adopted by an American family when he was 8 years old. Airman First Class Alina Klyuchnyk Proffitt, an imagery fusion analyst with the 30th Intelligence Squadron, came to the U.S. as a refugee when she was nine. Her career goal is to become a physical therapist working with military veterans. “It’s pretty great knowing that where I’m serving now is helping the country I was born in,” Proffitt said. “It’s a great honor being here.” Airman First Class Konstantin Zelenskiy arrived in the U.S. from Ukraine when he was 5 years old. Zelenskiy said he joined the Air Force to give back to the country that gave him “the opportunity to chase the American dream.”

Advance assignments now available to Airmen deploying for 365-day Extended Deployments by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Effective Nov. 1, active duty Airmen selected for an extended deployment may apply to receive an advance assignment up to 16 months prior to the projected Report Not Later Than Date of the assignment. This means Airmen can have permanent change of station orders in hand immediately after completing all required PCS actions and before departing on their deployment, providing their dependents the option to

move early to their next assignment location. “This change recognizes the need for us to increase stability and predictability for our Airmen and their families and helps our Airmen focus on their mission while deployed,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. “The ability to receive an assignment prior to departing for an extended deployment allows Airmen to make decisions that are good for them and their families.” Previously, Airmen on extended

deployments were required to be deployed for at least 60 days before being notified about potential assignments, and orders were not published earlier than 120 days prior to the new reporting date, making it difficult for Airmen and their families to plan. In 2017, the Air Force’s Personnel Center chartered a 365-Day Extended Deployments Working Group to look at initiatives to find better ways to accommodate and incentivize yearlong deployments. Approximately 400 Airmen per year are selected for 365day extended deployment.

The 365-day deployment policy change allows Airmen time to outprocess from their losing base, provides the option to move their dependents to the new assignment location, and gives Airmen the option to request movement from their deployed location directly to their new assignment without having to return to their currently assigned unit first. Airmen selected for extended deployments should contact their local Military Personnel Section for more information.

Please purchase puppies properly

Courtesy of the 86th Mission Support Group Christmas is approaching fast, and it is time to get presents. Some people might think a puppy is a nice Christmas present. Acquiring a new puppy should be a joyous event. However, it is important for buyers to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who sell puppies. Regrettably, some of these puppies become sick or even die shortly after their purchase, resulting in large veterinary bills and heartbroken buyers. Here are a few helpful hints to

increase the likelihood of making the right choice when buying a puppy: Purchase your puppy from a local source. Make sure you meet with the seller and write down the seller’s name, full address and phone number. Ask the seller for a list of references that includes previous buyers and other breeders. Visit the puppy two or three times before making the purchase. This will allow you to check out the facility more than once and will also let you better understand the animal’s actual temperament and health.

Insist on seeing the mother and also inspect her. Examine both the puppy’s and the mother’s vaccination records. If the record is in a foreign language, make sure to ask a local veterinarian’s office what the vaccinations cover. Also, take notes as to the vaccination dates and the age of the animal when it was vaccinated as this will help the vet’s office verify that the animals are on an adequate vaccination schedule. Inspect the actual pedigree. Pedigrees should have both the Verband fuer Hundewesen

and Federation Cynologique Internationale symbols, and the dogs with these pedigrees must be identified by either an individual tattoo or be microchipped. These identification numbers must appear in the pedigree as well as the numbers from the animal’s ancestors. For further advice, consult with a veterinarian. Also, remember that if one of the owner’s in the household is German, the puppy needs to be registered with German authorities.

The 86th Airlift Wing commander and command chief lauded U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Alexander Carlson for his excellence in executing the Air Force’s missions across multiple theaters of operation. Carlson, a California native, is credited with leading a highly-trained team during an important bilateral training event with allied forces. He also led a team to evacuate U.S. troops and their equipment during a mission in a deployed location. “It’s a very humbling experience for me to receive this recognition, especially since I didn’t join the military looking for accolades,” Carlson said. “Knowing I was able to do all these things, it’s a nice feeling.” Aside from his operational accomplishments, Carlson also developed a training system for his fellow loadmasters, thereby ensuring his squad-

Garrison Postal Superintendent Kirk Baldwin said volunteers help expedite product to the community and get parcels taken care of. “Volunteering is a win-win situation that helps the post offices and gives volunteers experience,” he said. Working in garrison mail rooms gives volunteers a chance to get familiar with U.S. Postal Service rules and regulations. This is a big head start for people looking to work for parcel delivery companies, said Baldwin. Volunteers should be able to lift

Lastly, while sending holiday mail, don’t forget to check your own mail as well. Due to spatial limitations, Baldwin emphasized it is vastly important to check mail as often as possible over the holidays so they can move mail out to get more mail in.

New BMC BOSS leadership invigorates program

(Left to right) Eloy Campos, Baumholder Better Opportunities for Single Service members adviser; Corey Mehler, BOSS Recreation assistant; Spc. Miguel Montoya, BOSS vice president, and Spc. Khady Dia, BOSS president, visit the site of the new Baumholder Warrior Zone. The new facility will be completed in early 2019.

Story and photos by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz What is there to do in Baumholder? That’s a good question for single service members and geographically-separated bachelors living on “The Rock,” but one program now has them asking, “What should I do first?” Thanks to the Baumholder Better Opportunities for Single Service members program, single Soldiers and geographically-separated service members can enhance their quality of life through recreation and leisure activities, while assisting the community through volunteer efforts, said Baumholder BOSS President Spc. Khady Dia, an automatic logistics specialist with Echo 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery. Before she arrived at Baumholder in May 2016, Dia had preconceived notions about her new duty station being a boring place to live, she said. But her former roommate — a unit BOSS representative — got her involved in the program to change her mind about Baumholder. “After I got here, I began seeing Germany through the BOSS program and started thinking, ‘This place is really nice,’” Dia said. “Baumholder has a lot to offer, and when you speak to people from Baumholder, they are happy to tell you all about the activities in the local area.” BOSS Vice President Spc. Miguel Montoya, a heavy vehicle operator with the 515th Transportation Company, already had experience with BOSS at his previous assignment – Fort Wainwright, Alaska. “When I got there, I started doing some recreational activities with BOSS,” said the geo-bachelor, whose spouse and one-year-old son live in Alaska. “I joined the program during the first winter I was stationed there, because there’s hardly any sunlight for about eight months of the year, which can be depressing.”

His first activity was a deep sea fishing trip in Seward, Alaska. Afterward, Montoya was hooked. He participated in several other trips and became immersed in the military community as well. “I think their goal was to ensure Soldiers got everything they could out of the program to have fun, because Alaska has a high suicide rate due to the long winter season,” he said. “The program was pretty amped up in Alaska, so there are a few things they were doing there that we are trying to implement here.” One big change is more leadership involvement, Montoya said. At his previous base, his command sergeant major was very engaged in BOSS. In Baumholder, USAG RP’s Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse is equally committed to enhancing the lives of unaccompanied Soldiers’ through BOSS’ three pillars: quality of life, recreation and leisure and community service. “BOSS is important because it’s a program for single Soldiers, led by single Soldiers, like Specialists Dia and Montoya. BOSS gives single Soldiers and geo-bachelors living in the barracks a ‘voice’ or a line of communication to express their concerns and ideas regarding their wellbeing, morale and overall quality of life all the way up to me,” Waterhouse explained. “The program also gives them opportunities to take part in recreational and leisure activities that they might not otherwise get a chance to do – like transportation and lodging-provided trips to the Alps or attending special events designed for them to have fun – like paint ball tournaments and trips to local fests where they can meet other single Soldiers from their installation or other installations within the Rheinland-Pfalz community. BOSS also gives single Soldiers and geo-bachelors the opportunity to help their fellow service members by serving as volunteers for community events held at the various Army and Air Force installations.” The garrison command sergeant

major oversees the BOSS program and provides input and support, Montoya said. “CSM Waterhouse supports the program and does what he can to ensure Soldiers can participate,” he said. “For instance, when single Soldiers sign up for a BOSS trip, they must clear it with their unit first sergeant to ensure they can attend. This avoids last-minute cancellations due to conflicting work schedules. Unless a Soldier is in a mission-critical position, the unit should allow the individual to attend BOSS functions.” To energize and make their unit representative meetings more interesting, Dia said they hold their meetings at different local restaurants each month to give them a taste of the local culture. “In the past, all of our meetings were held in the temporary Warrior Zone, which was dull,” she explained. “So, one of the new things we implemented was changing the location of our meetings each month. By changing the meeting locations, we can find new places to engage and learn about the program.” BOSS is also increasing participation by advertising events using social media platforms and newer messaging apps. “Right now, our job is to show more visibility in the community and visit the units to make sure they know what is going on in the program and what we have to offer our Soldiers,” she said. That’s why BOSS will begin using freeware and cross-platform messaging to inform people about events and receive immediate results on what they want to attend. BOSS will use the new communication tools to announce events to singles and geo-bachelors – a segment of the community that is sometimes underrepresented in garrison family-oriented functions. Soldiers can talk to their unit BOSS reps to be added. “It can be difficult to plan BOSS events, because there are so many people with different wants and likes. Right now, we are trying to create events to

meet the different needs of everyone,” Montoya explained. “It’s also difficult because work is still being done on the new Warrior Zone, but once it’s completed, we should be able to schedule a lot of BOSS events there.” Recently, BOSS got into the Halloween spirit by participating in the five-kilometer Zombie Run, Spookathon, 5/7 ADA Trunk or Treat and Haunted Hayride. After the hayride, participants enjoyed a well-deserved break at a bonfire and camping excursion. The BOSS program also gives the single Soldiers who serve as their unit BOSS representatives an opportunity to serve as a leader in their unit and in their community – whether they are a private second class or a staff sergeant, Waterhouse said. “One of the most important responsibilities a unit BOSS representative has is to communicate any quality of life concerns and ideas on improvement to their respective first sergeant and the garrison BOSS president,” he said. “The garrison BOSS president has the responsibility to pass that information on to me. My job, in turn, is to work with unit leadership and community organizations like the Army and Air Force Exchange Service; Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation; and garrison staff leadership to come up with ways to address those concerns.” Baumholder currently has between 30-40 unit BOSS representatives, Montoya said. “Being a unit BOSS representative is an additional duty, but it’s an important job that keeps Soldiers informed and involved,” he added. “BOSS changed my perspective a lot. It changed the way I saw Baumholder and the way I enjoy my Army experience,” Dia said. “It means a lot to me knowing our community is involved and cares about the quality of life of our single Soldiers.”

CHAMPIONS: Royals recapture high ground

Title game captains Solomon Udoaka, Jordan Hodson, Jakob Steinbeck, and Bailey Holland carry the jersey of injured receiver/defensive back Jason Jones at the pregame coinflip.

by Thomas Warner contributing writer Ramstein completed the high school football season undefeated with a 30-12 win over Lakenheath, securing the 2018 Division I title after the Royals lost in the title game last year and making it clear to all that they are the gold standard among all DODEA football schools. Dominique Arizpe might have cemented this latest large school title, the fourth of this decade and the seventh title game appearance in the past nine seasons for the Royals’ program, with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Also a track and field standout, Arizpe ran well all season and had 77 yards on 18 carries to finalize a highvolume junior campaign. “Our overall running game was beneficial to us all year,” said third-year head coach Carter Hollenbeck. “We were fortunate to have several running options and we threw the ball with con-

sistency, too, so all of that made us hard to defend. This championship was earned by many and not just a few.” Austin Grimes had a 32-yard field goal plus three extra-point kicks in the win and Ramstein (8-0) had many in uniform who got little recognition throughout the undefeated title campaign. An offensive line that ranked as best in all of Europe and several defensive pursuit players who kept opponents on the run made for many double-digit wins for the dominant Royals. senior season defensively, ending things with nine tackles and an interception. Miquel Smith also had 11 stops while Bailey Holland had nine, then Cole Strom, Nick Scherzer, Jalon Lewis, and Kyle Lloyd combined for nearly 30 more to halt Lakenheath’s upset bid. Ramstein outscored opponents 286-98 enroute to the championship and had beaten LHS 40-0 earlier this season but this final game had several twists and turns before an outcome was determined. “We blocked a punt right before halftime or it would have been scoreless,” said Hollenbeck. “On the night, we had four defensive stands inside Lakenheath’s red zone that were huge. Our defense really stepped up, but they’ve played at a high level all year.” Logan Ridenbaugh blocked the Lakenheath punt and Ramstein got on the scoreboard first with a quarterback sneak touchdown by Jakob Steinbeck. Early in the third quarter, J.J. Little ran the ball and Naser

Eaves caught a Steinbeck aerial to set up the Royals’ second TD, on a 12-yard carry by Little. Lakenheath (6-2) only saw eight pass attempts by Steinbeck because the running attack of Arizpe, Little, and Holland piled up nearly 200 yards and served to keep the clock moving. After Lakenheath got a touchdown run to cut their deficit to 14-6, Arizpe peeled of his long kick return and added another short scoring carry to start the fourth quarter to built an insurmountable lead. One area that Lakenheath was able to penetrate with the passing game, piling up 216 air yards including one long scoring play for 80 yards that would be their last big push. “The first time we played them obviously wasn’t who we were,” said Lakenheath coach Gabe Feletar. “We had some big moments and we played really hard … leaving it all out there.” Eaves picked off two of the Lancers’ throws and showed himself to be among DODEA’s elite footballers. ketball, where he already won last year’s hardwood season MVP award. There will be other sports for other players, too, and this football season will be long remembered for the deep cast of producers that made the title possible. Nick Scherzer transferred from Spangdahlem and was an immediate force on both the offensive and defensive lines. Soloman Udoaka was another big body senior on the offensive line with Jordan Hodson and there were far too many defensive stalwarts to fully note. The 2018 season was notable for the competitive climate of the other five Division I schools, as Lakenheath battled toward its eventual second-seed status, Stuttgart improved gradually during the season in hopes of defending its 2017 crown, and Kaiserslautern got guidance from a new coach to make a return to the postseason. Finally, though, it was Ramstein that had the most consistent plan and set a model for other schools to try and duplicate next fall.

Winter emergency kit for your car by Find-It-Guide.com

Photo by Lucky Business / Shutterstock.com

If you have spent any time in Germany, you probably have already figured out that driving is serious business. If you compared the cost for someone just to have the privilege to drive in Germany versus somewhere like the U.S.A., you will see right away people who drive in Germany value it for a reason. Before someone can drive on their own, they go through driving school, examinations, drivers license fees, high insurance costs and then they finally get behind the wheel. It can cost upwards of two to three times more to finally drive on your own in Germany as opposed to what it costs in America. It is no wonder, everything related to driving is taken very seriously. As you drive around Germany, start to notice the little things that make driving a pleasure. Take the painted curbs around some curves for example. That is usually something reserved for professional racecar drivers, but it is commonplace in most dorfs (towns or villages). Notice on country roads that there are perfect markers with reflectors every 25 meters to guide you along the way at night. Although everyone likes to complain about all the construction (and there is lots of it!), the roads are extremely well maintained, especially the beloved Autobahn. As the days get shorter and darker, the cold and wintry weather creeps closer and closer. It is easy to think that you would never get stranded, but seeing someone standing behind the guard rails (as required by law!) on the side of the road is a fairly normal occurance. Having a winter emergency kit is standard practice in Germany and could save you from a cold and miserable extended period outside if your car breaks down or slides off the road due to snow and ice. We have listed a number of items below that can help you stay safe. Once you’ve gathered all your items, pack them in an easy to grab container like a backpack, plastic container or crate and store it in your trunk. Make sure you organize your emergency kit so you know where each item is when you need it. Remember to replace expired or used items so your kit is ready to go with every trip.
