Precision, patience pay off

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Joel-Ira Willis, 97th Civil Engineer Squadron pavements and construction equipment operator, Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, operates a truck-mounted crane during a two-week crane course at Ramstein Air Base, March 11. The 435th Construction Training Squadron hosted the course. Willis was tested on his ability to maneuver a 600-lb barrel through a series of cones.

Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Instructors from the 435th Construction Training Squadron conducted a two-week course on truck-mounted crane operations March 2-13. The crane course gave civil engineer Airmen the opportunity to receive a competency card, allowing them to operate the equipment at their home units. “It’s crucial for each shop to have a couple of crane operators, especially for deployments,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tyler Preston, 435th CTS contingency training instructor. “If you’re deployed, you’re going to perform a lot more crane jobs than at home station.” Cranes can be used for large construction projects, such as the build-up of a new base in deployed locations. In more unfortunate cases, they can also

be used for aircraft mishaps. “If an aircraft goes down in the field, you need to be able to get it out of there,” Preston added. “A crane is the perfect equipment for the job.” Having a trained professional at each unit who can operate these machines improves Air Force readiness worldwide. For Ramstein, the 435th CTS is ready for any contingency operation thrown their way. “One of the other things we deal with here is contingency training,” Preston said. “A lot of the resources we need arrive in (intermodal containers), which we can use our crane to move those materials around.” The instructors set up a course designed to test the Airmen’s precision and patience. “I learned this is a piece of equipment that’s about precision and patience,” said Senior Airman Joel-Ira Willis, 97th Civil Engineer Squadron pavements

and construction equipment operator, Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. “It’s not like a dozer or loader, where you just ram it into a pile, scoop it up and dump it somewhere. This is really calculated. You have to really think about what you’re doing, and you have to feel the controls and be familiar with the equipment.” Airmen spent many hours practicing hands-on crane operations, which required the ability to multitask and maintain concentration. In the first stage, Airmen were required to lower the crane hook into a metal barrel without knocking it over. Next, they had to hook the crane to a 600-lb concrete-filled barrel, lift it and maneuver the barrel around a ring of cones without touching any of them. “When you’re inside that circle, you’re doing three things at See PRECISION, Page 2

Page 2 COVID-19 from Page 1 We’re also working through the latest financial guidance to alleviate fears of, “I’m in an expensive place and I can’t do this for two months, nor do I have two months of leave saved up to be able to do this.” There are mechanisms in place to mitigate undue hardship. Guidance will continue to flow as it becomes available to give flexibilities to commanders and supervisors for both military and civilian Airmen. Is there a telework plan for Airmen who work in office settings? Absolutely. Squadron commanders have been given the tools they need, and we are encouraging those with the ability to telework to do so. Who should be wearing masks? The only people who need to wear masks are people who are sick. The exception are healthcare providers who are wearing a specific type of mask as they work with patients. PRECISION from Page 1 once,” Willis said. “You’re turning the cab with your left hand, and then your right hand is both lifting the boom and hoisting the rope up and down.” The complex multitasking required to accomplish this is not without proper training. The first week of the course consisted of classroom material testing the Airmen’s aptitude and attentiveness to ensure they could operate the equipment safely. “This is the most dangerous piece of equipment because of the loads you’re going to be lifting,” Willis said. “So, they really want to vet people; that’s what I think the first week is really about. They try to overload you to see if you can handle it.” Upon passing the first week’s test, the Airmen move into the hands-on portion where they practice the crane course until they are officially tested at the end of week two. After passing, the Airmen receive their competency cards and can then operate the cranes at their respective units.

What is the restock schedule for the commissary? Our schedule remains the same as it has always been. Once the stores close, our vendor stockers and commissary employees come on to restock the stores. There is no need to “panic shop” as the supply chain is stable. Will special education students get services such as speech and OT? Yes. We understand that the distance learning can be more difficult for some students with specialized needs. Parents are encouraged to speak with their teachers and case managers regarding specific concerns. At this time we ask for your patience as we work through how to best accommodate these students.

How are the aircrews being protected? We are going out of our way to make sure they stay in different locations. We are protecting them as much as possible. We are following FAA and DoD guidance to keep them separate and as safe as possible. When will Army and Air Force guidance align? The garrison looks at a different area than we do. The four installations we have within the 86th Airlift Wing and KMC is different than what the Army does within their garrison. If you work here at Ramstein, look at our website, Facebook page and App to see what is affecting us here.

What happens to the next Operation Varsity? Right now, this is a varsity-level event with everything we are doing. We also have to remember we have Mission Partners. One thing we must consider is the Air Mobility Operations Wing has a majorgraded exercise at the same time. So we have to work at re-scoping or changing Operation Varsity with our Air Mobility Command Partners. More to follow on that front, but I think the IG is watching everything we are doing right now and I would have to say we rate as Highly Effective for the entire team.

Can you speak on what is happening with deployments? EUCOM is still looking at our commitment to deployments. Right now deployments are still coming from CONUS through Ramstein. As the gateway to the world, our professional airlift mission will continue. This is part of the balance we consider every single time we look at balancing the community health versus the mission set we have. Does the base have access to test kits? 27 Airmen compete to be named 2020 USAFE Defender Challenge champs by Staff Sgt. Devin Nothstine U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa Twenty-seven security forces members within the U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa competed in the 2020 USAFE Defender Challenge at Ramstein Air Base, March 4-6. The three-day challenge tested nine, three-man teams of Defenders from various units to crown the best overall team. They were put through a series of events consisting of strength, knowledge and precision skills. “If we want to consider ourselves as some of the elite, then we need to train like the elites do,” said Staff Sgt. Bryce Neff, 496th Air Base Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of plans

and programs. Throughout the competition, the Defenders had to run five miles in full “battle rattle” wearing a 40-pound ruck sack, complete a series of high intensity exercises before firing 56 rounds from various distances up to 300 meters and completely exhaust themselves in a combat agility test racing against the clock for the fastest time. “We put these individuals through challenges to make them develop as a leader,” said Master Sgt. David Day, Headquarters USAFE weapons system security manager. “When they go back to their units, they are able to instill that Warrior Ethos into their Airmen while also influencing the leaders above them in the chain of command.”

The challenges were based on security forces basic training guidelines, specifically testing the Defender’s abilities to execute tactics involved in tasks they may face daily. “This is a good measurement to see where these fine Defenders are at,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jason Garo, 422nd Security Forces Squadron operations superintendent. “As the USAFE team captain, I will choose 10 of the best Defenders from this competition to

conduct tryouts for the final team that will compete at the worldwide competition.” The worldwide security forces competition tests the top 14 security forces five-man teams from the U.S. Air Force major commands, Great Britain and Germany. As of now, scheduling of this year’s competition is to be determined. Their skills will be evaluated in realistic weapons scenarios, simulated dismounted operations and grueling combat endurance.

“The most important trait is attitude,” Garo said. “Attitude is the thing that wins, it doesn’t matter how big or strong you are; if you have the will to go until you can no longer go, that to me is the number one trait to have.” The 435th SFS team took home the bragging rights as the best 2020 USAFE Defender team. The winning team consisted of Tech. Sgt. Ross Caldwell, Staff Sgt. Cordell Linscomb, and Senior Airman Kyle Alvino.

AFAF 2020 kicks off at Ramstein Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community came together for an Air Force Assistance Fund kick-off event at the Enlisted Club, Ramstein Air Base, March 9. During the event, AFAF representatives provided information about the annual campaign’s purpose and the donation process. “This program is about Airmen taking care of Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Erica Fowler, 86th Force Support Squadron

Airman and Family Readiness senior noncommissioned officer and AFAF project management officer. “Those who want to donate can do so by bringing cash or checks to project officers within their unit, or by filling out a form for automatic deductions from their payroll.” Donations feed into community support programs such as Bundles for Babies, deployed spouses, and interest-free loans for Airmen in need. Last year, AFAF helped 179 families with necessary assistance totaling approximately $130,000. “I think one of the biggest

benefits to Airmen is the interestfree loan program,” said Yomi Fontanez, Air Force Aid Society manager. “The loan helps Airmen who come to our office due to unforeseen car repairs, family emergencies or other circumstances.” The fundraising officially began March 2 and will continue until April 10, 2020. Ramstein’s goal for AFAF 2020 is $140,000. For more information on AFAF, or the donations process, contact the A&FRC at DSN 480-5100 or commercial 06371-47-5100.

Survivors find easier access to Army installations by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command Certain Gold Star and next-of-kin survivors are expected to find it easier to visit Army installations since a new process went into effect in January. The survivor’s access policy allows qualified survivors to get through gate security more easily and travel on post without an escort to attend events, view memorials and receive services using their survivor’s access card, or long-term installation access pass at overseas locations. “The Army values people, especially our Gold Star spouses and family members,” said Lt. Gen. Douglas Gabram, commanding general, U.S. Army Installation Management Command. “This change allows them to more easily receive the benefits and services to which they are entitled, and helps enable them to remain connected to the Army.” Eligible survivors are those who meet the criteria to receive the Gold Star lapel button or Gold Star Next-of-Kin lapel button, including widow or widower, parent, child, stepchild, child through adoption, brother, half-brother, sister and half-sister. Stateside, eligible survivors may apply for and receive a survivor’s access card through the Army’s Automated Installation Entry system at their local garrison. Overseas, eligible survivors should contact the Survivor Outreach Services team at their local Army Community Service to begin the application process and background check to obtain a long-term installation access pass. The installation access pass will be valid for up to one year and can be renewed by repeating the application process through SOS. Survivors visiting overseas installations from stateside locations may use their survivor’s access card to gain access. “We support survivors to keep them connected to the military community,” said Tina Mann from the SOS team at Kaiserslautern ACS. “This community may be where their son or daughter, husband or wife, brother or sister, mother or father served — this is somewhere that was a big part of their life.” The SOS program provides dedicated and comprehensive support through a network of civilians serving as advocates for survivors. SOS staff can assist survivors to access benefits available to them at their local installation, such as career and financial counseling. “SOS is here to provide resources to survivors,” Mann explained. “Sometimes survivors don’t know where those resources are and they just need an advocate — somebody to be their voice.” Other efforts from SOS include meet and greet events, and an annual luncheon for Gold Star spouses with the USAG RP Command Team. “It’s really important to recognize the Gold Star spouses and families in our community and let them know the community still cares about them,” Mann said. “We want to let them know that we’re still here for them, and it’s important for us to hear their stories.”

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Commander Col. Jason Edwards and wife Jackie (left), along with Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse and wife Christina (right), share a moment with Gold Star family members Mary Aguiree-Garza (foreground), Marjorie Simon-Meinefeld and Sgt. 1st Class James Madden at the Gold Star Mothers and Families Day Luncheon Sept. 27, 2019, in Kaiserslautern. “We can never pay back the debt to our fallen Soldiers, but we can support their surviving families by sharing their grief and listening to their stories,” added USAG RP Commander Col. Jason Edwards. “The strength of our nation is our Army. The strength of our Army is our Soldiers. The strength of our Soldiers is our families. The Army recognizes that no one has given more for the nation than the families of the fallen.” While the survivor population in the Rheinland-Pfalz military community is not large, Mann said community members should be aware of Gold Star spouses and family members living here or visiting, and to know that someone wearing a Gold Star lapel button has suffered a loss.

To track survivors’ feedback on the new installation access process, the Interactive Customer Evaluation survey added new questions to help determine customer satisfaction with outreach efforts. Local community members can search ‘Survivor Outreach Services’ under USAG RheinlandPfalz at https://ice.disa.mil to fill out a feedback form. “The Army honors our surviving family members by ensuring their access to our installations and Army-led joint bases,” said IMCOM Provost Marshal Col. Kevin A. Comfort. IMCOM is directing policy compliance and training for its 75 garrisons and installations. The new process resulted from Section

CSAF Survivor Advocacy Council conducts first meeting

Lt. Col. N’Keiba J. Estelle, a member of the Air Force Survivor Advocacy council, speaks with Air Force leadership during the council’s first meeting at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., March 6. The council was created in October 2019 to provide opportunities for surviving family members to discuss with senior leaders the type of support services currently available and which they hope to see.

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

ARLINGTON, VA., — Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein hosted the first Air Force Survivor Advocacy Council meeting at the Pentagon March 6, to discuss how the Air Force can better serve military families after the loss of a service member. The council, created in October 2019, provides an opportunity for surviving family members to discuss with senior leaders the type of support services currently available and which they hope to see. The Survivor Advocacy Council was created to secure vectors to strengthen support to Air Force survivors and validate their ongoing role in the larger Air Force family. “The creation of the Survivor Advocacy Council allows us to provide the best assistance available to our military families,” Goldfein said. “It allows families to provide feedback, and help guide the military in a direction to better take care of the greatest asset we have, our Airmen.” “This program is the first of its

kind for the Air Force,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “The program is an open and unfiltered forum for survivors of Airmen to speak to Air Force leadership. This council allows survivors the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns that will drive future policy change.” The Survivor Advocacy Council is currently composed of 13 survivor representatives who are spouses, children, parents and siblings of fallen Airmen. The representatives, who applied to serve on the council, were selected to bring knowledge and experience on what has worked and where improvements are required based on their experiences. “Our Airmen are willing to sacrifice their lives for the greater good of our nation, and we want to ensure them that we are here for them and their families every step of the way,” Goldfein said. “We are grateful for the council members who have dedicated their time to advocate for families during a difficult journey.”

Samantha Lewis, a member of the Air Force Survivor Advocacy council, speaks with Air Force leadership during the council’s first meeting at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., March 6.

Public Affairs member wins six command communications awards Story & photos by Stefan Alford Installation Management Command

The garrison’s fledgling video production capability didn’t take long to reap huge dividends on the investment of approximately $10,000 last fall for cameras, lighting, software and equipment for a makeshift studio in the basement of Bldg. 162 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.. The information products created for community messaging by garrison deputy public affairs officer Jason Tudor earned him six individual 2019 Installation Management Command Communication Competition awards — three first place showings and three second place awards across the video categories. “I’m proud of Jason and our PA team for consistently dominating the information battle space, whether video, print or social media - their products are seen, shared and praised at the highest levels of Army leadership,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards. “Jason and the team have been at the forefront of messaging the qualityof-life priorities IMCOM is responsible for, from housing and child care, to spouse employment and PCS moves. “Even more impressive is the fact that we only received our video equipment and set up our studio in October,” Edwards continued, “so the amount of quality products Jason produced for our community during the last quarter of the year truly stands out.” Tudor earned honors for his work in the following broadcast categories: • Long-Form Production for Baumholder’s “Let’s Talk Housing;” • Short-Form Production for the inclement weather safety video “Get Snowtified;” • Video Spot for cyber awareness; • Video Series about the child development centers, which was picked up by IMCOM and used Army-wide; • Video Story about firefighters returning from a deployment to Italy; and • Non-Narrative Story about a barracks facility manager being recognized for her efforts. IMCOM Commanding General Lt. Gen. Douglas M. Gabram said in a congratulatory message to the awards winners, “I know that all of you are working hard as part of an integrated garrison team to be on the offense in telling the good stories of the progress we are making to improve the quality of life for Soldiers and their families. What you do is vital to our success and the readiness of our Army.” IMCOM-Europe Director Tommy Mize added: “Really incredible job by our great PAO Team of Teams. Really remarkable accomplishment.” “I’m fortunate to work with amazing pros who allow me to exercise one facet of my PA skills to this extent,” said Tudor. “Dr. (Kevin) Griess (Deputy Garrison Commander) has been generous and supportive with this and we do everything we can do meet his and the commander’s needs with video and audio products to support our communications

work for the garrison.” This year’s communications competition, known as the Keith L. Ware Awards,

was IMCOM’s first as a major subordinate command of Army Materiel Command. The winners now move on to compete in AMC’s

David G. Harris Public Affairs Competition, with those winners advancing to the Army level competition.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Deputy Public Affairs Officer Jason Tudor records a video interview at the garrison’s video studio on Rhine Ordnance Barracks March 6. Tudor won six individual 2019 Installation Management Command Communication Competition awards - three first place showings and three second place awards across the video categories.

Occupational therapist restores critical skills Story & photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The occupational therapy office at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center does not look like a typical medical office. A row of exercise equipment occupies the brightly lit room along with a weight rack, a heated bin of what looks like sawdust, as well as various brightly colored instruments. There are tubs of putty and rolls of yellow, blue, green and red material; all the equipment in the office are tools for working on patients’ hands and arms. “Occupational therapy is a rehab profession aimed at helping anyone with a physical, mental or social illness, disorder or problem,” said U.S. Army Capt. Jacqueline Tamayo, LRMC occupational therapy assistant chief. “We help them work through those issues to interact with life as optimally as possible.” Since there are fewer than 70 occupational therapists in the U.S. Army, Tamayo’s title is rare and may be misunderstood by those who are unfamiliar with this particular medical niche. Issues a patient would go to the occu-

pational therapists at LRMC for include PTSD resulting from combat or sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, wrist fracture, tendon laceration, a broken finger, and memory or movement problems resulting from a stroke. LRMC has three occupational therapy resources to help recovering patients accomplish everyday tasks. The orthopedic clinic helps with upper extremity bone and muscle issues. The traumatic brain injury clinic deals with TBI-related neurological issues involving upper extremities. The Evolutions Program helps post-traumatic stress disorder victims cope through activity-based groups. The most common injuries Tamayo sees are through motorcycle incidents, which cause crush wounds and road rash, and tendon lacerations from cutting food or using a box cutter. Also, personnel with desk jobs are prone to carpal tunnel and tendonitis. Much of Tamayo’s work involves evaluating and reassessing patients’ progress. She applies treatments and movement exercises until they are back to optimal function. The foundations of occupational therapy have existed in different forms as early as 100 B.C. The practice was heavily influenced

by the U.S. Army during World War I, when they were called reconstruction aides. By working off a doctor’s diagnosis, reconstruction aides would devise physical activities to get injured muscles working again. For a variety of reasons, occupational therapy is slightly different in the military today than in the civilian world. While the majority of the career field assists with a vast amount of daily troubles, Tamayo mainly addresses elbow, wrist and hand injuries and ailments. She is one of several LRMC OTs, but that is her specialty. “In the last civilian job I had, I was seeing 22 patients a day and the question was always ‘why aren’t you seeing 25?’” Tamayo said. While working in the Army, Tamayo has experienced the opposite and enjoys thefreedom to give patients the amount of care they need. For a referral to occupational therapy, contact the 86th Medical Group appointment line commercial at 0637146-2273, or DSN 479-2273. For the LRMC appointment line, call commercial at 06371-9464-5762 or DSN 590-5762.

Starting a family or having another child can be a costly life event. A mother may also have questions or concerns about the health and wellness of her child, or even herself. To combat these costs and uncertainties, the Women, Infants and Children Overseas program, a Department of Defense nutrition education and supplemental food program, provides multiple benefits that help families lead healthier lives and save money. Those eligible to be enrolled are children 5 years of age or younger and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or up to six months postpartum. In order to qualify for enrollment, individuals must be active duty service members, DoD civilian employees, DoD contractors or dependents of the aforementioned who are stationed overseas. Individuals must also meet criteria based on income and household size. “The income guidelines, which determine the cutoff point for the amount of money a household can make before not qualifying for the program, are the highest in the nation,” said Virginia Johnson, WIC Overseas regional manager. “It takes a few minutes to verify qualification, so we encourage everyone to call.” Earnings such as cost-of-living adjustments or housing are not factored in to the income criteria, so just because someone may have a higher paying position or didn’t qualify in the U.S. doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t qualify here, Johnson said. One of the program benefits that those who qualify may receive is drafts, which are like vouchers. These vouchers are redeemed at local base commissaries for foods which meet U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition guidelines. “It’s a supplemental food program, so it’s supplementing a little bit from each of the five main food groups – protein, dairy, whole grains, fruits and vegetables,” said Holly Dalpias, WIC Overseas, Ramstein team lead. Program participants are given a shopping guide during their first appointment after enrollment that categorically depicts the allowable food items they can shop for at the commissary. Other WIC Overseas benefits

include nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to other base organizations that support health and wellness. “We have tons of cookbooks and recipes,” Johnson said. “We do cooking classes and monthly breastfeeding classes, as well.” Nutrition and health screenings are also a part of the program, aiming to promote women’s health during and after pregnancy, healthier birth weights for babies and reduced anemia rates for children. “We test the children once a year, starting at age one, and moms one time while they’re pregnant and one time postpartum,” Dalpias said. “We review their hemoglobin or hematocrit levels in order to provide nutritional education to help increase iron levels through nutrition.” All WIC Overseas counselors are registered nurses, dietitians or other health professionals with nutrition backgrounds. “Currently at Ramstein, we are all nurses and also Certified Lactation Consultants,” Dalpias said. “Typically it’s nurses or dietitians who are the counselors. All of the WIC Overseas staff members at Ramstein, Baumholder and Kleber Kaserne are either Certified Lactation Consultants or International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, which makes us qualified to help participants with breastfeeding questions or concerns.” Women in the program who are breastfeeding can also take advantage of a hospital-grade breast pump loan service provided by WIC Overseas. The service helps mothers who may not be able to afford breast pumps for the duration of their breastfeeding period. Supplemental food packages will vary depending on the unique and specific needs of participants. The mission of WIC Overseas is to promote and support healthy babies, healthy pregnancies and healthy children by providing access to healthy food and lifestyle choices, Johnson said. To determine eligibility status and possibly enroll in the WIC Overseas program, call one of the offices to do a short prescreen over the phone: Ramstein Air Base at DSN 480-4466 or commercial 06371-47-4466, Baumholder Clinic Kaserne at DSN 531-3496 or commercial 0611143-531-3496 or Kleber Kaserne at DSN 541-5141 or commercial 0611-143-541-5141.

Decluttering your home by Joey Pebble contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com Everyone wants to live a simpler lifestyle, but it’s not always obvious how to go about doing that. By getting rid of the clutter that clogs up your home, you’ll be able to create a more serene and peaceful place, while also making your spaces more functional and easier to use. If you’ve let things go for a long time, then the challenge of cleaning out the mess may seem daunting. The good news is that there are a number of tricks you can use to divide up the task and even make it fun.

Anywhere box The simplest way to start cleaning the clutter is to use an “anywhere” box. This can be a simple cardboard or plastic bin that is set in a room that is particularly disorganized. Whenever you see something that belongs in another space, you can simply dump it in the box

rather than running all over the house to put things in order. Then every week or so you can carry the box from room to room and place everything where it belongs. The store box The use of a store box is a similar decluttering method. Basically you go through a room and place anything that is extraneous to its daily function into the box. Then label the box and place it in a closet. Over the course of the next few months you can see which items you end up fetching and which ones get forgotten. This will inform you as to what can be gotten rid of. And when the time comes to get rid of it — you can donate it to your local thrift store, or make a few dollars by selling it on FindItGuide.com. Hanger experiment Another trick that uses time to determine worth is the closet hanger experiment. Featured on the Oprah Winfrey show, this involves taking all of the outfits that you have

in your closet and hanging them facing in the same direction. Then whenever you take an outfit out to wear, it should be replaced facing the opposite direction. After about six months this will tell you which clothes you use, and which can be donated.

12-12-12 Challenge If you want to turn your organizational efforts into a game, then you could try the 12-12-12 challenge. That requires you to go through the house and find 12 items that can be donated, 12 that can be thrown away and 12 that can be put back in their proper place. When played with kids or spouses, this can be a fun challenge contest that also helps to declutter the home. When dealing with personal items, you may get emotional, especially when deciding which things to get rid of. You should try to do this process over time, in small partitions so that you don’t get overwhelmed and just end up quitting. You can also help ease any sadness you may feel by giving items away to friends or bundling them up for charities. Knowing that your previously treasured possessions are still being actively used may help you to part with them. Maj. Baldwin: C-130J Super Hercules pilot portrait Story & photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force C-130 pilots are commissioned officers who learn to command their aircraft with complete control while upholding roles as leaders and role models. Maj. Mary Baldwin is one such C-130J Super Hercules pilot who flies the skies over Ramstein with the 37th Airlift Squadron. Surrounded by students who had the same dream, Baldwin’s ambition to become a pilot was born while she attended the U.S. Air Force Academy. To become a pilot, Baldwin underwent 1.5 years of training and gained extensive knowledge on air navigation, meteorology, aircraft operations and mission tactics. She also succeeded in other areas, such as passing three weeks of survival, evasion, resistance and escape training in a rugged, unforgiving environment. “Pilot training was the beginning of my continuing lesson in simply doing my best and being okay with the results – even if

it’s not perfection; it never is,” Baldwin said. Baldwin has tackled a variety of challenges over her 11-year career. Her biggest obstacle was learning to adapt to continual upgrade training, yet she persevered to achieve qualifications to fly three aircraft, including the C-130H Hercules and the T-1A Jayhawk. After completing several assignments, including four years as a C-130J instructor pilot, Baldwin accepted an assignment with the 37th AS. Today, Baldwin supports one of the world’s largest Air Force bases by delivering supplies to bases in Africa and Europe via aerial transport as well as cargo or personnel drops. The mission also includes transporting patients in critical condition to life-saving facilities. “My favorite part of being a pilot is being involved in the mission,” Baldwin said. “I like being part of a team with a goal and working together to accomplish it.” One of the challenges women in the military and aviation com-

munity face is the lack of female mentors to give advice, Baldwin said. Out of the more than 80 pilots in the 37th AS, Baldwin is one of 9 women. Yet, Baldwin is grateful to the role models who paved the way for her. “The people I looked up to, who planted the seeds for me to join the Air Force and become a pilot, were men,” Baldwin said. “They mentor me now and inspire me to work hard and perform well.” Baldwin enjoys being a pilot and uses her experience to mentor others. “I strive to be the best person I can be, and hopefully that has a positive effect on others – male and female,” Baldwin said. To find out more about becoming a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, talk to a local recruiter or visit https://www.airforce.com/careers/ detail/pilot. To contact the United States Air Force Recruiting Europe office, call commercial at 06371-47-3430 or DSN 480-3430.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Mary Baldwin, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft pilot, stands in front of a C-130J at Ramstein Air Base, March 11. Over her 11-year career, Baldwin has achieved qualifications to pilot three aircraft and spent four years as a C-130J instructor pilot.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Mary Baldwin, right, and Maj. Benn Slikker, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft pilots, fly a C-130J over Germany, March 11. To become pilots, Baldwin and Slikker acquired extensive knowledge of air navigation, meteorology, aircraft operations and mission tactics.

U.S. Air Force Maj. Mary Baldwin, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft pilot, climbs onto a C-130J flight deck at Ramstein Air Base, March 11. To become a pilot, Baldwin underwent 1.5 years of schooling, including survival, evasion, resistance and escape training in a variety of remote environments.

Two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron fly over Germany, March 11. The flight was a training mission to ensure aircrew members stay proficient on procedures such as combat offloading, which could be used in a combat environment for speedy delivery of supplies and equipment.

AUTOAHRENS AUTOVERMIETUNG INTRODUCING: Car Rental in Sembach

Military rates Weekend rates Auto-Ahrens has been in business in Kaiserslautern for over 40 years. The team recently moved to Sembach near the traffic circle on your way to Heuberg Kaserne. Specializing in car rentals, Ahrens is the place to go for short-term rentals, like when you’re PCSing, have family visiting, want a different car to go on vacation with or for a weekend trip. Long-term rentals are also an option. If you don’t want to commit to buying a car or leasing one, you should consider renting one. Ahrens has a wide variety of newer and older models in different sizes, like station wagons and mini vans, also with an automatic transmission. When you rent your car with them, you get a fullservice package deal. And just like that you don’t have to worry about main-

tenance, inspections, tires or repairs. They take care of anything and everything for you. If it can’t be fixed right away, they give you a replacement vehicle on the spot. The same goes in case of an accident. That sure does take a lot of stress and hassle away. At Auto-Ahrens the customer comes first. They strive to offer a good and valuable service. Make sure you ask about their military rates, weekend rates and holiday specials. They speak English and accept VAT forms and credit cards. If you rent a car from them they even offer a shuttle service to pick you up in Kaiserslautern and bring you to Sembach to pick up your rental. Feel free to stop by and browse around to see what’s available or set up an appointment for a free consultation.
