Chievres: Separated but self-sufficient Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Sara Keller 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs CHIEVRES AIR BASE, Belgium — Standing at the end of the short runway, only chickens can be heard clucking from a family farm just a stone’s throw away. The morning air is dull and misty but not as foggy as yesterday, so if you squint your eyes just right, you can see clear across the small military base. Today’s mission has been canceled and there’s a charming calm to the base. Like an old man who’s lived through so much, there’s just no need for the rush anymore. Chievres Air Base is home to the 424th Air Base Squadron, a group of Airmen nestled in the heart of the Belgian countryside to provide airfield operations support for the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and NATO transient aircraft and distinguished visitors. The squadron is made up of approximately 70 Airmen and about 18 different career fields, with DV aircraft tran-

siting through up to three times a week. The 424th ABS, like the 65th Air Base Group in Lajes Field, Azores, and the 496th Air Base Squadron in Moron, Spain, is a geographically separated unit that falls under the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein. The base is located about 20 min-
utes from SHAPE and almost four hours from Ramstein. The area, along with much of Belgium and Europe, is rich in history and certainly has a story to tell. The first airfield at Chievres was established during World War I and was rebuilt by Germans in 1940. It
was bombed more than 30 times during World War II before Allied forces occupied the base in October 1944. In 1967, Belgian authorities turned the base over to SHAPE, and it has been known as Chievres Air Base since. See CHIEVRES, Page 2

Unfortunately, he didn’t make it into the world,” Justice said. “The AFAF gave me a grant to pay for the entire funeral. The fact that we didn’t have to worry about where the money was going to come from allowed us to focus on our family’s emotional and mental health.” Airmen can donate to the AFAF at https://mypay. dfas.mil/mypay.aspx and retirees can donate at www.afassistancefund.org. These four Air Force affiliates have provided help to many families and Airmen in need, whether it was to cover a cost of a funeral or to help pay for college tuition. The AFAF is about Airmen helping other Airmen. This year, it’s not about Airmen giving more; it’s about more Airmen giving.
Tip of the Week
Ramstein’s Air Force Assistance Fund is slated to accept donations that support Airmen and their dependents from March 21 through April 29. For 43 years, the AFAF has sustained four affiliate Air Force charities that give back: the Air Force Enlisted Village, the Air Force Village Charitable Foundation, the Air Force Aid Society and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. Lemay Foundation. According to Master Sgt. Antonio Lindsey, 86th Wing Staff Agency and 86th Comptroller Squadron first sergeant, this program is a great way to show generosity and take care of wingmen.
“We work day-in and day-out with each other, and through that daily interaction, we hear the myriad of struggles we all go through,” Lindsey said. “The AFAF, and other programs alike, are in place to take care of the personal concerns and needs of Airmen and their families so (they) can focus on the mission.” The charitable affiliates provide support for Airmen and their dependents in many ways, including those in emergencies and who need help paying for educational costs. One Airman who has received help is Master Sgt. Dwayne Justice, 86th Maintenance Group programs and resources section chief. “My former wife and I were going to have a baby.

US, NATO allies strengthen ties during Real Thaw 16 Story and photo by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Six allied nations gathered to reflect on lessons and partnerships as exercise Real Thaw 16 came to a close March 4 in Beja, Portugal. Real Thaw 16, a Portuguese-hosted NATO exercise, provided tactical training to participating nations. Its aim was to merge and employ different aerial platforms toward one major objective, which covered a vast range of activities to include defensive and offensive counterair operations, highvalue air assets protection and slowmover protection. Airmen from Ramstein took advantage of the opportunity they were given and grew their skills with their wingmen and foreign counterparts. “It was exciting to have Ramstein be a part of Real Thaw this year,” said Col. Gerald Donohue, 86th Operations Group commander. “The exercise was a great way for us to test our operations and pinpoint areas that could be improved upon. Though we could only be there for a week, the experience we gained will last a lifetime, and we look forward to working with our allies during future endeavors.” chievres, from Page 1
Occupations within the squadron range from security forces and firefighters to air traffic controllers, fuels management and vehicle mechanics. Although each Airman at the base has a specific job, being geographically separated with a limited amount of personnel, Airmen end up getting the opportunity to fulfill multiple roles within the squadron. “There are a lot of things Airmen do here that are unique to this location that they wouldn’t normally do at

Along with improving their capabilities of the C-130J Super Hercules, the Ramstein team also took time to build rapport with the other nations involved in the exercise. “Our major focus was to build partner capacity and interoperability to operate with the Portuguese and other NATO countries during real-world missions,” said Capt. Jacob Fuchs, 37th Airlift Squadron deputy mission commander for Real Thaw 16. “The combined air operations portion where we were able to fly with other airframes allowed us to interface with units we normally wouldn’t see on any given day. This training is vital to us operating in a tactical environment and working alongside our foreign
a bigger base,” said Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Wagoner, 424th ABS superintendent. “A lot of positions here are only one-deep slots, so our Airmen end up getting the chance to run programs that are normally run by someone of a higher rank. It’s actually a great opportunity for our Airmen to get experience and grow.” The 424th ABS is a selfsustaining unit. The Airmen function somewhat like a wing, just on a smaller scale. They conduct their own official physical fitness testing and even urinalysis testing.

counterparts to make us that much better.” The importance of Ramstein’s airlift capability was showcased during the exercise, airdropping approximately 116 personnel and 23 tons of cargo and flying 15 sorties within the week. “Airlift is essential to the warfighters on the ground,” Donohue said. “We supply everything from equipment to personnel and all the resources in between. It is our job to ensure what is needed for the fight is delivered, and taking part in Real Thaw gave our pilots the scenarios needed to grow and perfect their skills to save the lives that depend on them.” Though working with the C-130J is
When Airmen in the squadron have questions that can’t be answered or a service that the base just isn’t equipped for, that’s when they reach out to Ramstein for support. “We do a lot on our own, but we know we can always reach back to our counterparts back at Ramstein for assistance,” said Wagoner, who also doubles as the ATC tower chief controller. “We have to figure things out sometimes without the immediate mentorship we might be used to, so although it might have its challenges, it pushes us to learn things that we might have never had to.”

not new for the 37th AS Airmen, having the opportunity to see how other nations operate their aircraft presented possible solutions to improve upon their capabilities. “Our counterparts operate by using completely different techniques, and seeing that taught us a lot,” Fuchs said. “From how the pilots fly their aircraft to how the paratroopers jump out of them, it is refreshing to see new ways to do a certain job, and we are going to look at how we could possibly incorporate some of them.” It is their dedication to learn and have an open mind that makes the Ramstein team so great, Donohue stated. “Our Airmen are the best out there,” Donohue said. “Not because they can manage any obstacle or accomplish missions without a hitch but because no matter how great they are, they always strive to be better. They thrive from growing their skills and teaching those around them, and when put in an environment where they can learn from other nations, they are like a sponge.” Though the exercise concluded, the U.S. Airmen look forward to strengthening their ties with their NATO allies in both training and realworld future operations.
When Wagoner isn’t busy revising enlisted performance reports or managing the airfield, he has the opportunity to meet every single Airman he works with and really get to know them. He knows when they put their last stripe on, their kids’ names, and where they just came back from when on leave. “It feels like our own little Air Force family sometimes,” said Senior Airman Derrick Kemp, 424th ABS. “We’re a tight-knit unit. We hang out together, workout together and help each other out with whatever we might need.”

Along with the great relationships he’s been able to build in his short time, Kemp said one of his favorite things about being stationed at Chievres is the location in Europe and the amount of time he has to really focus on his upgrade training and growing his career. Being stationed at a GSU has its challenges, but being at a place like Chievres will continue to give Airmen there a unique outlook on the Air Force mission as they provide world-class airfield support to their SHAPE and NATO customers.

View from top enlisted tier Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Micky Pena 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing will now have the opportunity to experience life from the highest tier of the wing’s enlisted force. Implemented by Chief Master Sgt. Philip L. Easton, 86th Airlift Wing command chief, the Chief for a Day “shadow” experience allows an Airman to shadow his position as senior enlisted advisor to wing leadership and Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th AW commander. Airman 1st Class Nader Hussein-Fernandez was the first chosen for this unique opportunity and stepped into Easton’s shoes March 3. Hussein-Fernandez, a native of Puerto Rico, is an aerospace ground equipment technician with the 86th Maintenance Squadron. His duty day usually consists of repairing aircraft, so HusseinFernandez had what he calls an “eye-opening experience” shadowing Easton. Easton and Hussein-
Fernandez spent their day visiting units within the 86th AW, discussing current issues with wing leaders and enlisted Airmen, ensuring the enlisted force is ready and capable of fulfilling the mission. The day gave Hussein-Fernandez a peek into how wing leaders function. “We were always on the move — lots of briefings, lots of information being shared. It’s hard to believe how little time they have for a break,” Hussein-Fernandez said. “It was surprising. I thought they would be in the office more, but they are constantly moving and out the door. We visited at least six different units in a matter of a couple of hours.” One thing that HusseinFernandez especially took note of throughout his day was the mission readiness he witnessed firsthand across the wing. “People at each job were so prepared and ready at all levels to get the mission done,” he said. After standing in Easton’s shoes for the day, HusseinFernandez also now has a different perspective of his role
as an Airman and what he brings to the mission. “You’re always working, but you never get to see and fully understand leadership roles. You have to keep your mind open to the broader scale and not just think about your job only. I definitely have a better understanding of how the Air Force works on a grander scale now and how it trickles down to each and every single Airman,” Hussein-Fernandez said. Easton says this is what he wants Airmen to see. “I want Airmen to gain this perspective, to see that their job is essential and that what they bring to the fight keeps Team Ramstein moving, enabling our power projection platforms theaterwide,” Easton explained. Additionally, HusseinFernandez believes a program like this has the added bonus of also focusing Airmen by showing them exactly what their leaders are doing every day for them, and it’s a great morale boost. “This is a great experience for whoever goes through it; I feel lucky,” Hussein-
Spouses learn ins, outs of Ramstein by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Military life comes with an overflow of greetings and farewells. Moving into new homes, enrolling at new schools, searching for jobs and many more concerns can put stress on a military spouse arriving at a base. In an attempt to ease the stress of these many challenges, the 86th Airlift Wing hosted its first-ever Ramstein Spouse Academy March 3 and 4. Volunteers from a variety of base organizations briefed approximately 50 spouses on 13 different topics that will benefit spouses. “We take very good care of our spouses to ensure they are educated and trained in resilience,” said Jan Devitt, 86th Airlift Wing community support coordinator. “We need each other over here. With the information and education we are (providing), they will be able to establish a social-support structure and network. ... If families are taken care of, the mission gets taken care of.” One of the topics the class covered was spouse health. The facilitators spoke to spouses about taking care of both themselves and their families. The topics were about child care, volunteer opportunities, education and spouse life, including careers and self-employment.
In addition to speaking about health and wellness, the briefers spoke on topics involving military operations, which included deployment cycles and military spouse protocol during official functions. According to Melissa Austin, a spouse in attendance, this type of class was one she wishes was available 23 years earlier when she was transitioning into a military lifestyle. “I’ve been (a military spouse) for a very long time — 23 years — and I think this program is wonderful,” Austin said. “If they would have had this when I was new, I would have been very happy. It’s great to see this is being offered for spouses today.” Phyllis Cohn, American Red Cross member and facilitator, explained how she enjoyed making an impact on the spouses in attendance at the event. “This experience was invaluable to me to be able to talk about volunteer opportunities with these bright and motivated spouses,” Cohn said. This class is just one avenue for spouses to get acquainted with military life. For more information on transitioning and resources in the community, the Airman and Family Readiness Center offers a Heartlink class to familiarize spouses. To sign up for Heartlink, call 480-5900.
Airman First Class Nader Hussein-Fernandez, an aerospace ground equipment technician with the 86th Maintenance Squadron (right), receives a certificate of recognition from 86th Airlift Wing Command Chief Philip L. Easton, March 3 on Ramstein. Hussein-Fernandez was the first to participate in Easton’s shadow program at Ramstein, allowing him the opportunity to witness life as a wing command chief for a day.
Fernandez said at the end of his day. “I have a lot of respect for what they do. It may not be the same hands-on work we are doing, but leading in itself takes a lot of work and dedication.” But Easton just hopes they gain some new perspective on the entire enlisted force. “Mighty 86th Airmen may only see life and work within their units and offices. I hope that after some time with wing leadership, they’ll better see how Ramstein Air Base and the 86th AW functions, gaining a new appreciation for
not only what every individual does, but also for what we accomplish together,” Easton said.

NCO shares perspective during Women’s History Month by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To help highlight Women’s History Month, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs recently met with several inspirational women around the KMC to ask them a few questions about what the month means to them. Staff Sgt. Joy Martz, 603rd Air and Space Operations Center Air Mobility Division NCO in charge of training, shared her responses. Q: Who has been the most influential woman in your life? Why? A: I am. I am my own worst critic nine times out of 10. I am the most influential person in my life because I have never learned more about myself and how to be a better version of me, rather than falling down and kicking myself in the butt, than when I don’t meet my own expectations. I am a work in progress, and being self-aware of that fact is powerful. Q: What is your greatest personal accomplishment thus far? A: So far, it was being awarded the John L. Levitow award in Airman

Leadership School. In the command post career field, we don’t receive a lot of interaction with many people during our duty hours, outside of tele-
phone conversations. To begin a class with complete strangers one day and then earn their respect and (the) confidence of people that I have never
interacted with before creates a huge boost in self-confidence. Q: What professional goal do you hope to accomplish, and how are you working toward that goal? A: I want to work in the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. I have to earn the rank of technical sergeant to even have a chance of working there, but it is also essential that I gain experience in nuclear command and control aspects of our career field. Q: What is something unique that most people don’t know about you? A: I can’t wait to one day tell my grandchildren that I was once a ballerina, an artist, a bartender, an air traffic controller, a wife, a mother and a world traveler. It’s a pretty neat perspective. Q: If you could give one piece of advice to women interested in joining the Air Force, what would it be? A: You have the opportunity to reinvent and better yourself at each and every assignment. You will never be stuck forever. Take advantage of each new beginning.
Clock Tower Cafe heats up for Connelly competition Story and photo by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs March 3 began like any other day at the Clock Tower Cafe dining facility on Kleber Kaserne, with the first formation, the cooks’ mount, at 5:30 in the morning. “Fall in,” said the shift leader, and the first inspection of the day began. On this day, however, something unique and special was about to happen. “Good morning, food service workers,” said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Princido Texidor, a food service advisor with the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence, based at Fort Lee, Virginia. “Out of 198 dining facilities throughout the Army, you are in the top five. Today is your day to show your skills and show us why your DFAC is the best Army-wide and why you should win the Philip A. Connelly award.” The Philip A. Connelly Competition, named after the former president of the International Food Service Executives Association,
began in March 1968 as a means of recognizing excellence in Army food service. The JCCOE administers and manages the prestigious annual competition. The Clock Tower Cafe competed against many other Army DFACs in the preliminary round of the Connelly competition, judged in the fall of 2015. The preliminary round narrowed the field to five. The other DFACs still in the running are based in Korea; Hawaii; Fort Hood, Texas; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The last time the Kleber facility ranked within the top five DFACs during the Connelly competition was in 2006. They came in second that year. “We have been preparing all year for this opportunity,” said Sgt. 1st Class Keshon Henry, dining facility manager. “We are ready to win; you can tell our people want to win.” Two other evaluators joined Texidor for the day: Sgt. Maj. Amelia Fisher, JCCOE director, and Jack Kleckner of the National Restaurant Association, a partner with
JCCOE in hosting the competition. The collaborative relationship ensures the competition broth includes the perfect blend of industrial excellence and Army standards. “This program is truly a partnership between the food service industry and the military,” Kleckner said. The evaluators spent the day checking all areas of the dining facility, but evaluating in other ways as well. “Because we are evaluating this DFAC for the best DFAC Army-wide, we want to make sure we cover all areas,” Kleckner said. “The meal is an important part,” Texidor said. “But this competition is about the overall food service program here, including sanitation practices, cleanliness, food preparation, production, courtesy, and equipment usage, just to name a few areas.” During both breakfast and lunch, Kleckner walked through the dining facility and asked the patrons various questions, such as whether they liked the food and how often they dined at the facility. He and the other evaluators also questioned a number
of administrative workers and managers about paperwork, budgets and administrative details. The evaluators also stressed the importance of continual training. The program, they noted, encourages continuous learning, development and better service for patrons as well as distribution of awards to winning facilities.
“Even though we are here to evaluate you, we want this to be a training opportunity,” Fisher said. “Keep in mind that after today you will have a heightened awareness of your skill set.” By the end of lunch, the evaluators were finished. They assembled all of the See competition, page 8 Advertisement

participants for a farewell briefing. “Just being one of the top five dining facilities Army-wide makes you all winners already,” Texidor said. “We’ve had a terrific time here, and I hope you all have learned something new today,” Fisher added. “No matter how this competition comes out, we think you are an amazing team, and you all have shown excellent teamwork here today.” Program leaders offered high praise. Kleckner, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the food industry makes compliments especially gratifying, compared the facility favorably with eateries around the world. “I have been to restaurants all over the world,” Kleckner said. “I want to tell you that your dining facility and
your food were just as good as any restaurant I have been in.” Evaluators won’t settle for halfbaked analysis, so they’ll stew on observations gleaned from kitchens around the world for several weeks before finalizing results. The winner of the competition will be announced in April. Personnel representing the culinary champions will fly to Chicago to receive their award. “We had a terrific day today,” Henry said. “I am so proud of my entire team today. They all did their very best. “We certainly hope to win this year,” he continued. “However, regardless of the outcome, we will now take the time to digest what we have learned from this experience and start planning for next year’s competition.”

The CASTLE symposium offers professionals in the chaplaincy the opportunity to receive training and professional development in a number of areas critical to their calling, including ministering to soldiers, counseling soldiers and advising commanders. Various key leaders engaged with the attendees, which included primarily brigadeand battalion-level chaplains and their assistants. In addition to key leader and subject matter expert presentations, the forum also included open

discussion sessions in which attendees were afforded the opportunity to speak openly and frankly about challenges facing them both in their faith and professionally as service members. Each CASTLE symposium is centered around a particu-
lar subject within the profession of the Army chaplaincy, and this session was focused on the sometimes challenging balance between a chaplain’s calling as a servant of faith and a chaplain’s duty as a servant of soldiers in a fastpaced, multicultural commu-
nity like the U.S. Army. “This CASTLE is focused on ‘identity,’” said Chaplain (Col.) Jonathan Shaw, the USAREUR command chaplain, who organized the event. “We’re trying to answer the question: What does it mean to be a religious supporter who is

also serving in the profession of arms? Strengthening servant identity is foundational for all we do, serving God, the nation, and soldiers, families, and civilians.” Chaplains play a unique role in the military and, in addition to their commissioning in the military, are ordained and formally recognized by their various faith organizations. This means that they essentially need two broad skillsets, according to Shaw, to navigate challenges and serve effectively in the military. They need clergy skills to minister and professional military skills to lead, inspire, and advise. Sustaining those skills is exactly what this symposium is meant to do. “We do this to sustain the individual, so they can go back and sustain their units,” Shaw said. “By gathering to do this in person together, we are building the human team. People are building confidence by hearing from other people on the team about ways of dealing with these difficult challenges.”

TODAY: Salmon with Sauerkraut and Green Cabbage Stir-Fry The Friday before Easter is known as Karfreitag or “Good Friday” and traditionally people eat fish for dinner with their family.
Ingredients (for 4 people) • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 4 fresh salmon fillets, seasoned with lime juice and fresh ground white pepper • 8 oz of dry white wine • 3 teaspoon pickled pink peppercorns • 2 tablespoon quark (get it on the economy) • Freshly ground white pepper • Salt to taste
Tech. Sgt. Marcus Romero, 424th Air Base Squadron fuels management technician, stows a hose after refilling a fuel truck Feb. 25 on Chievres Air Base, Belgium.
For stir-fry vegetables: • ¼ of a head of fresh green cabbage, chopped • ½ a jar of German Sauerkraut, drained, rinsed and squeezed as dry as possible. • 2 carrots thinly sliced • 1 onion thinly sliced • ½ leek thinly sliced
• ½ green bell pepper, thinly sliced Heat 2 tablespoon of the oil in a wok and stir-fry the carrots, leek, onion and green bell pepper for 2 minutes. Add the fresh green cabbage and fry for another 2 minutes. Then mix in the Sauerkraut and cook until hot. Season and then set aside, keeping it warm. Put the remaining oil in a large pan. Season the salmon and pan-fry for 3 minutes on the top side and then turn over and fry the other side for 2-3 minutes. Remove the fish to a warm plate. Pour the wine into the pan along with the pink peppercorns and allow to reduce to about half of original volume. Add the quark, season and remove from heat. To plate, put the stir-fry vegetables as the base, top with the salmon and drizzle the sauce over all. Fish and sauerkraut is a popular combination in Germany. For a lighter sauerkraut, flavor, look for weinkraut, which is steeped in white wine.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Betty Boomer 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Two officers and seven soldiers from the 266th Financial Management Support Center competed in the unit’s Best Warrior Competition held on Rhine Ordnance Barracks Feb. 29 to March 2. First Lt. Ricardo Ellin won Best Warrior Junior Officer, Sgt. Mauricio
Decasa won Best NCO, and Spc. Veronica Rodriguez won Best Soldier. “The Soldiers out here competing tells a lot about their character,” said Sgt. 1st Class Steven J. Brooks, 266th FMSC accounting NCO in charge. “They are high-speed, motivated and excited. These soldiers are living the Army values.” Four of the junior enlisted soldiers who competed are fairly new to the Army and looked forward to the chal-

Participating in competitions like this helps Soldiers build their confidence on warrior tasks and drills as well as their job performance in the office, according to Brooks. “I’ve only been in the Army 20 months,” said Pfc. keep pressing forward.” The competition consisted of 12 events over three days, beginning with a written exam and essay. Day two consisted of a physical fitness test, physical readiness training test, day land navigation, drill and ceremony, and knowledge boards. The events were continuous and were both physically and mentally challenging. The final day consisted of a 10-kilometer ruck march where every other kilometer Soldiers had stations to test their knowledge on M16 disassembling and assembling, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear, map reading and first-aid tasks. “This is a capstone period to bring together our Soldiers and junior officers for all the attributes and competence that we require of our soldiers,” said Sgt. Maj. Alberto A. Quan, 266th FMSC sergeant major. “We are soldiers first and not just finance technicians.” Quan continued to explain that with the Army’s new vision, “strategic advantage in a complex world,” competitions like this will help soldiers learn to be flexible and dig deep by transforming into agile, expert and versatile Soldiers in a balanced force that can provide additional strategic options for military leaders in future crises. “I entered this competition to motivate my soldiers and lead the way,” said Ellin, who, as the officer winner, felt he had set a solid example. “Being a warrior is what we do, and we need to ensure our soldiers have someone to follow.” The winners of 266th FMSC will continue to train and move on to compete in 21st Theater Sustainment Command Best Warrior Competition. “Every Soldier should come out here. It’s the root of our profession,” Ellin said.

Don’t be swayed by dental misconceptions by Airman First Class Samantha Bodnar 86th Dental Squadron Dental visits can be a source of anxiety for many people, which are often due
to common misconceptions. One concern is the radiation exposure from dental X-rays. X-rays are an essential part of patient care because they allow providers the opportunity to assess areas hid-
den from plain sight. Every time an X-ray is exposed, the patient wears a lead vest and the technician or doctor leaves the room. This action could be a bit concerning and make a patient
wonder, “how much radiation am I really receiving?” According to the authors of “Oral Radiology: Principles and Interpretation,” one set of annual X-rays is equivalent to a little more than half a day of

walking in the sun. This small amount of radiation is miniscule compared to having an arm or leg X-rayed. Pregnant women may tend to avoid the dentist due to fear of radiation exposure to their child. However, pregnancy is an especially important time to visit the dentist. During pregnancy, a woman experiences several physiological changes that may increase her risk of dental problems. As of August 2013, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published that dental X-rays can be safely taken throughout the entire pregnancy with the use of a lead apron. They will also only be taken if the dentist deems they are necessary for the patient. Another popular concern is the use of amalgam, silver, fillings. Some may fear that these treatments could be hazardous to their health. Patients do not need to avoid fillings. Dentists trust and recommend amalgam fillings because their durability, wear resistance and strength exceed that of other materials. Some people wonder if amalgam fillings need to be replaced due to the mercury content. The American Dental Association says they do not. Amalgam is made up of several different materials combined together chemically. Mercury is one of these materials. However, it is not dangerous to a person’s health because it is combined with other materials. Mercury is only hazardous when it is free mercury. Rest assured that the amalgam filling your dentist recommended is the best thing for your teeth in the long run. Dental X-rays and amalgam fillings are not as scary as they may seem. Dental X-rays emit a very low and safe amount of radiation. X-rays help dentists by allowing to spot cavities in areas between teeth that cannot be seen with the naked eye. For more information on this topic or if you have any questions, contact the 86th Dental Squadron at 479-2210 or 06371-46-2210.

Waking up from a car accident, a young woman finds herself in the basement of a man who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman. The Brothers Grimsby (R) Nobby, a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan, reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian, a deadly MI6 agent, to prevent a massive global terror attack and prove that behind every great spy is an embarrassing sibling. Nobby has everything a man from Grimsby could want, including 11 children and the most gorgeous girlfriend in the northeast of England. There’s only one thing missing: his little brother, Sebastian, who Nobby has spent 28 years searching for after they were separated as kids. Nobby sets off to reunite with Sebastian, unaware that not only is his brother MI6’s deadliest assassin but he’s just uncovered plans for an imminent global terrorist attack. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rebel Wilson.

Geierlay, Germany’s Longest Suspension Bridge
Story and Photos by Gemma McGowan Contributing writer to MilitaryinGermany.com
then turn on a side road on the left which brings you out to the field.
Opened only in October 2015, Geierlay is Germany’s longest suspension bridge, and it makes for a wonderful day out in the stunning German countryside! The suspension bridge is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. Do you dare to cross it?! My Arriving When I added the town of Mörsdorf into my GPS, I felt like I was about to journey through Middle Earth to destroy Frodo’s ring. After a beautiful drive through RheinlandPfalz, we arrived at the Geierlay Visitor Center. The visitor center is in a modern wood building which inside has a cafe and bathrooms. There are no bathrooms by the bridge, so it would be suggested to use the bathroom before you depart! The center also has a designated parking area. There is no cost to go on the bridge, however there is a fee of 2 Euros per day for parking. A request from the visitor center is that you do not try to drive to the bridge, but to reach it only on the paths by walking or biking. Also, you are required to respect the beautiful landscape and pick up any trash you may make.
The paved walkway is 1.7 kilometers to the bridge. The way to the bridge is actually a really beautiful walk! If you have a little one, I suggest to bring a stroller or wagon. If not, you may end up like me and have a child on your shoulders on the journey back! Strollers might not fit on the actual bridge, but there is an area where you can leave them.
When you turn the final corner of the bridge’s path, there is an area where you can sit and take in the amazing view. After we admired the scenery for a little bit, we were ready to walk across. Being there on a weekday, we pretty much had the bridge to ourselves! The only thing surrounding the bridge is untouched, breathtaking forest. It is chicken soup for the soul! Walking on the bridge was very thrilling and I felt safe on it! Since we were not in a rush, we had time to take in the spectacular surroundings. It is said that it takes six minutes to briskly walk across to the other side; however, it took us much longer because of the snow and taking photos. For anyone looking to expand the walk back, you also have the possibility to take a hike in the woods. There is a trail map with all of the routes. One hiking route will take you across the bridge, down under the
bridge and then up to the other side. Sounds fun and we will definitely return to Geierlay this spring!
How to Get There Address: Geierlay Visitor Center Kastellaun Straße 23 56290 Mörsdorf The drive to Geierlay is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes northwest of Kaiserslautern. Author’s Profile: Gemma McGowan is a mom, a veteran and an Army civilian living in Wiesbaden, Germany. With New Jersey roots, she is enjoying her extended European vacation.
Head to the Bridge Time to head to the bridge! When walking to the road, there is a sign post pointing to where you start the walk to the bridge. You turn right on the main road,
