William Bailey, and wishing a fond farewell to the outgoing commander, Col. Debra Daniels. Brig. Gen. Theodore Harrison, the commanding general of the Expeditionary Contracting Command, presided over the ceremony. After the passing of the colors, Harrison publicly praised Daniels’ leadership and accomplishments. “Under Deb’s leadership, the 409th CSB has matured into a world-class organization,” he said. “She developed a newly organized military workforce while simultaneously, physically relocating the brigade headquarters and other key essential contracting offices across Germany, and she did this all while the brigade executed one-third of the ECC’s See COMMAND, Page 3

Finding your way down a winding Air Force road by Tech. Sgt. Chad Thompson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
T
here are many things in life we can’t change: the ones who we grow close to, the ones who bring meaning to what we do, the people who change us — our true friends. Many times during the course of my 14-year Air Force career I have felt I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I think I was mis-
taken. I think, in fact, I was in the exact place I needed to be, whether I was there for someone or someone else was there for me. We are each given very small clues day in and day out of what we are meant to do. I am still not quite sure where I will be in 10 years or 20 years or even in about three years. I know where I would hope to be, but will that truly be where I will end up? Probably not. My piece of advice is to make every moment count, no matter
where you are or where you think you should be. If there is something in life that reaches out and touches your soul, stop and take a breath and enjoy it because you never know when you might get the chance to experience it again. It’s funny how the simplest things in life can bring more meaning than anything, and it’s even funnier how these silly things come about sometimes. You wait and wonder and try and come up with some sort of
solution for things and then one day it just hits you like a ton of bricks — or, maybe it just takes a moment of weakness to see it and realize it. Nevertheless, always look to the stars and never stop hoping and dreaming. Enjoy Europe while you’re here. Get out and explore. Soak in the culture, learn a bit of the language and get out of your comfort zone once in a while — you never know what or who you might find.
World War II aircraft artifact returns to 309th AS Contributed by U.S. Army Garrison Benelux The 309th Airlift Squadron received a World War II artifact through the combined efforts of an author, a group of Airmen and a war memorial group during a private ceremony conducted May 22 at Chievres Air Base. The artifact was a hydraulic accumulator from a P-47 Thunderbolt, which was crash-landed by 1st Lt. John R. Read on Sept. 13, 1944, near Wanne, Belgium. He eventually returned to his unit and kept flying. However, Read’s broken aircraft stayed at the crash site, near Malmedy, for years. The Wings of Memory, a Belgian war memorial organization, organized the transfer from the Tennessee Museum of Aviation to the 309th AS after a request from author and former astronaut Thomas Jones. Jones was working with Wings of Memory trying to discover information about crash sites involving the 365th Fighter Group — Read’s flying unit. “The possibility a museum would give that artifact away — even for another museum — is nearly zero,” said Dirk De Quick of Wings of Memory. After the discovery, a call was placed to the U.S. national military representative in Belgium, Air Force Col. Mark Horn, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. Horn agreed to a symbolic hand off of the artifact at a small ceremony and asked the 309th to make all the arrangements. “You should be commended. I have tremendous amount of respect for each of you for dedicating even a portion of your lives to the men and women

New process for vehicle registration, inspection by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A new vehicle inspection process has been implemented in order to streamline services and cut down waiting time for KMC members seeking to register or re-register their vehicles on Kapaun Air Station. The updates to the process are a part of the “Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st century” initiative, as well as ensuring readiness for the peak permanent change of station season coming up this summer. “The reason we’re trying to do this is so that we can get our customers back to the work center,” said Master Sgt. Norman Dominguez, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron. “(During peak PCS season), the average wait time for inspection, re-registration and renewal is 2.25 hours,” he said. “Our whole goal was to try to decrease the wait time by 65 percent.” The changes include having a screening process prior to entering the inspection queue, to ensure all required documents are in hand before being seen. “There is a screening booth for customers. If the customer has all those items (needed), they go through the line and wait to be seen,” Dominguez said. “If they don’t have the required items, there is an exit lane.” Once a KMC member enters the inspection line, the vehicle readiness squadron and security forces substation have now teamed up in one location to increase efficiency. “While their vehicle is being inspected, they are talking to the VRS person, and they also determine

if they want a one year or two year for their renewal,” Dominguez said. “Once that’s determined, they speak to a security forces person to make any updates to address or phone numbers. “During that time, the inspector is looking over the vehicle,” he continued. “Once the item is paid for and they pass inspection, the inspector will place the decal on the license plate. The customer does not
have to take off his or her plates.” While the new process has been implemented, a noticeable decrease in wait time has occurred. “(With no cars) in the past two weeks, it takes 11 minutes total — from screening booth until you walk out to your vehicle,” Dominguez said. “If there are a few vehicles in line it takes 15 to 20 minutes. Come peak season, we will see how this changes.”

Team KMC: Firefighters take part in Combat Challenge by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
H
er eyes were closed as she imagined the upcoming challenge, attempting to take deep breaths in the mask that could potentially save her life. Going through each and every step of the course, she visualized what needed to be done in her head and took another set of deep breaths. When she came to the end of the course in her head, she opened her eyes, took a breath and waited. A siren sounded and the Firefighter Combat Challenge had begun for Airman 1st Class Jessica Clasen, 886th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter. “I try to visualize the course ahead and focus on what needs to be done,” Clasen said. The 886th CES firefighters have put together a team of six Airmen, five male and one female, to compete against firefighters from around the world in the Firefighter Combat Challenge, said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Noah, 886th CES crew chief and head team member. What exactly is a Firefighter
Combat Challenge? The Sports Medicine Center of the University of Maryland created a fiveevent challenge in 1975 to test and gauge the physical demands of a firefighter. May 1991 was the first challenge, which started as a test and evolved into a sport for firefighters all around the world to participate in. To win the challenge, participants must complete several events with the fastest time. The first event is a five-story stairwell sprint. Participants must climb a tower carrying a bag with a hose. Once firefighters get to the top of the tower they must place the bag in a specific location. Once at the top of the tower the contestant starts the second event — a hose hoist. They must hoist a donut roll of hose to the top and place it in a specified area. Once that is done, participants climb down the tower, ensuring every step is touched. Forcible entry is the third event. The Keiser Force Machine is utilized to simulate a forcible entry by hitting a mallet against a sled, driving it along a 160-pound steel beam. Next up, competitors drag a fire hose filled with water 75 feet and
shoot the water at a target. The last event is the victim rescue. Participants must drag a 175-pound mannequin backward 106 feet. The time then stops when the competitor and the mannequin completely cross the finish line. Individual world record times are 1:19.02 for males and 1:48.41 for females. In preparation for the events, Team KMC/Ramstein trains rigorously, Noah said. “We train about four to six days a week,” he said. “We do weight lifting, cross-fit training, anaerobic exercise and competition specific training where we run through the course. Over the eight years I have been doing this challenge, this year we are training better, resting better and learning a lot from previous years.” Keeping motivated during training helps, Noah said. “I’ve played sports all my life,” Clasen said. “However, this is harder as far as training goes. I just take things one step at a time and work on perfecting my technique.” Combat Challenges are held all around the world. “We just had a competition in France,” Noah said. “We had one
team member place second overall out of 93 participants. Airman Clasen placed second out of five in the female division, and our relay team placed first out of 19 teams. Our next competition is a two-day event in Poland.” Being in competitions around the world gives the team a chance to travel. “I remind everyone that we need to display professionalism wherever we go,” Noah said. “Most places we go, it’s the first time some people have seen Americans, so we need to represent, not only the Air Force but the United States.” As this team of firefighters prepares for the next challenge, they set personal goals as well. “I am hoping to get below three minutes on my next challenge,” Clasen said. “I am working on my techniques, training better and eating better. If I get a personal best, that’s a huge accomplishment in my mind.” At the end of the day Clasen took off her mask, closed her eyes, took a deep breath of fresh air and reflected on the challenge she has just completed, already thinking and anticipating the next challenge she will face.

Youth workers celebrated for hard work Story and photo by Mindy Campbell U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Recognized for their dedication, long hours and hard work, youth workers and teachers were recently celebrated during a nationwide salute. In early May, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week, dedicated to men and women who educate children, said Janice Broccoli, a Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation partner specialist in Landstuhl. In the past, each of the Child, Youth and School Services’ facilities created their own events to thank the teachers. This year, each facility honored the teachers in a uniform way, Broccoli said. The events were designed to celebrate the hard work the teachers do at CYSS, said Ellen Harris, CYS Services coordinator. “Our teachers are very talented, undergo strict training and truly love working with kids,” Harris said. Each facility created journals for each teacher that parents could write notes in to thank their children’s teacher. “Parents are recognizing teachers by writing notes thanking them for what they have done and what they mean to the children and par-

ents,” Harris said. “One parent even asked for extra sheets to write notes for teachers that have already moved away because they made such a difference in their life.” In addition to the journals, staff members were given certificates to leave work 59 minutes early and
another signed by the garrison commander thanking them for their service to child care. Each facility also hosted a luncheon for their staff on Friday, Broccoli said. With more than 400 children in regular, full-time child care and several thousand more in part-time, hourly or
sports programs spread from Miseau to Sembach Kaserne, the CYSS staff spends a lot of hours with the KMC children, Harris said. “The time, effort and care our staff put into their jobs is awe-inspiring,” Harris said. “They do make a difference in their lives.”
Garrison shines light on standout teachers Each of the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Child, Youth and School Services facilities were asked to nominate one teacher who stood out. Here are those results and a few comments about them:
» Maria Rodriguez, Kleber Child Development Center: Maria has outstanding teaching abilities, which is evident because the children are excited to see her everyday; they always greet her with a smile. She loves the children and is always going the extra mile to plan interactive and interesting lesson plans to keep them interested and eager to see what she has planned next. She is a great teacher and very creative. She can use anything and teach the children how to turn it into a master piece. » Marcia Bisco, Landstuhl Child Development Center 1: Marcia has gone above and beyond in her program by doing special gardening projects, presenting a “Writing Without Tears” workshop/training
and designing and replacing all of the center’s intercom number signs.
» Laura Welsh-Strack, Landstuhl Child Development Center 2: Although Laura has a Master of Business Administration, she went to a job fair and decided to give child care a try. Since then, she has taken every chance available to learn and grow in this field. She has completed her foundation level training in less than a year. She often asks for extra resources for parents and herself for things going on in the room. She is a real team player and always offers to help or stay late when needed. » Karen Vernon, Landstuhl Youth Center: Karen is a positive individual who has a strong work ethic and is extremely competent. Karen has developed strong relationships with both parents and youth. Because of this, she has helped bring more youth into the program. Karen has also helped secure several Boys & Girls Clubs of America grants for the program. These grants include a Triple Play grant in the amount of $2,500
and a technology grant in the amount of $5,000.
» Shernett Bailey, Miesau Child Development Center: Shernett has been working for Miesau Child Development Center since October 1998. Shernett started out as a FLEX CYPA floater, in 2000 moved up to a full time CYPA assigned to the toddler classroom, promoted to lead teacher in 2001 and finally became the supervisory program specialist in 2010. In her time at Miesau, she has worked for four CYSS coordinators, 10 directors, seven assistant directors and five training and curriculum specialists. Shernett is someone who is truly vested in the KMC and dedicated to CYSS and the Miesau CDC family. » Kurt Nusshag, Youth Sports: Kurt Nusshag has been with CYSS for the past four years. His knowledge in sports and fitness is truly a valuable asset to the KMC. He has worked many hours as a volunteer for CYSS and was recently recognized with the presidential volunteer service award.

10th AAMDC competes in Best Warrior Competition by 2nd Lt. Jean P. Tomte 10th AAMDC Public Affairs Twenty Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, located on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, competed in the 2012 Best Warrior Competition May 14 to 18 to determine the most qualified candidate to represent the 10th AAMDC at the U.S. Army Europe competition in August. Soldiers eligible to compete were junior officers in the ranks of second lieutenant to captain who had not completed the Captain’s Career Course, noncommissioned officers in the ranks of corporal through sergeant first class and Soldiers in the ranks of private through specialist. The winners of the competition were: • OFFICER: Lt. Joshua Herrington, Alpha Battery, 5/7 ADA • NCO: Sgt. 1St Class Jesus Arellano, Charlie Battery, 5/7 ADA • JUNIOR ENLISTED: Spc. James Earl, Hhb, 5/7 ADA Photos by Sgt. Megan Boyer
The 10th AAMDC chief of staff, Lt. Col. Benjamin Ogden, briefed the competitors on the first day of the competition. “I see this as a best professional warrior competition. By simply competing, you’ve already come out as the highest professional in this organization,” he said. “You have to maintain your technical proficiency as Soldiers and this event will test that.” Warriors who stepped up to compete had to master a series of events. During the competition, these warriors tested their ability to complete the Army physical fitness test, a 20K foot march, the stress shoot, the obstacle course, day and night land navigation, the M16 qualification range, the mystery event, the physical readiness training session, writing an essay, all Army warrior tasks and battle drills that are applicable to today’s warfare environment. Additionally, warriors appeared in front of a board to evaluate their knowledge in general in military bearing, resume, reporting procedures, uniform and appearance, and oral expression.
Spc. Justin McCarty from the 5-7 ADA rushes through the last phase of the obstacle course.
Spc. Jairo Garcia from the 5-7 ADA takes part in day land navigation.
“The training is going great, we all trained up before we got here. Now it is time to put what we learned at the battery level into practice,” said Staff Sgt. Cedric Whitlock from Rock Hill, S.C. Whitlock is a launcher platoon squad leader from Delta Battery, 5-7 ADA.
When asked what his level of confidence was before starting the night land navigation, Whitlock said, “I never felt so confident. It depends how far apart my points are. I believe I can find all my three points in one hour.” The grading process was tough and fair, and the maximum points that could be achieved was 370. “Soldiers are getting fatigued, and that’s what this competition is all about. It gets you thinking critically and reacting to obstacles,” said Sgt. 1st Class Derek Salley from Philadelphia, Pa., who was one of the evaluators. “My job during this exercise was to distract the competitors and see if they will notice the brief case on the side of the car,” said Spc. Robert Duverger, who works as a Patriot Operator Maintainer. 10th AAMDC Officer, NCO and Soldier Best Warrior Competition winners will receive several awards and recognition. Winners will also represent the command at the USAREUR competition.

Germans observe religious fest Thursday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs oman-Catholics in Germany will observe “Fronleichnam,” or Corpus Christi Day, Thursday. Corpus Christi Day is a religious fest observed 10 days after Pentecost. In some, but not all, German states, Fronleichnam is an official holiday. Stores, banks and official institutions will be closed in Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Bayern, in some communities in Saxony and Thüringen, and in areas with a heavy Catholic population. The word Fronleichnam derives from old German and corresponds to the Latin word “Corpus Domini,” Body of the Lord. In 1264, Pope Urban IV ordered the entire Catholic Church to observe the feast of

Church processions with a priest, ministrants, communion children of that year and worshippers go through decorated streets of villages and towns to celebrate Corpus Christi Day Thursday.
Corpus Christi. The fest commemorates Christ’s Last Supper the day before he died. It honors the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Nowadays, the church holiday is a colorful event that includes solemn processions through the streets, which are decorated with flowers, little birch trees and church banners. Four altars are set up on the procession route to symbolize the four stops of Christ’s way to the cross, known as the “Stations of the Cross.” A priest leads the procession and carries the Holy of Holies under a baldachin. Then, the ministrants, communion children of that year and worshippers follow. At the altars, the procession stops and participants say a prayer. The procession is accompanied by singing and usually ends at a church or a public place where an open-air worship service is conducted.

Player Spotlight: Jacob Mattison SPORT: Soccer POSITION: Center midfielder (team captain) TEAM: Ramstein Royals AGE: 18 YEARS PLAYING: 14
about playing center mid? Soccer can be explained as playing one or two dimensional. Center midfielder is two dimensional because you’re constantly under pressure from every angle – that’s the toughest part.
Jacob Mattison recently signed a letter of intent to start the inaugural season of the University of West Alabama men’s soccer team. He has played at a competitive level in both Korea and Germany, including making the Surf Cup Team, a select team of 15 American youths living in Europe who competed against club teams in the U.S. After his last game at the Department of Defense Dependents Schools championship soccer tournament playing with Ramstein, Mattison took time to discuss his love of the sport and his future plans.
Who is your inspiration? Ryan Giggs. He plays for Manchester United. I just like him because he is a solid midfielder and it’s inspiring that he has played at the highest level for 14 years.
What is your favorite part about soccer? I’ve just been playing for so long that now it is a part of me. What’s the biggest challenge
What is the best advice you’ve been given? If you want it, give everything you have. It’s all about heart – you can coach skill, but you can’t coach heart. What are your future plans for school? Any interest in the MLS? I’m excited to keep playing soccer and excited for the (college sport) atmosphere. With soccer, I’ll take it one step at a time. When I go to college, my main focus is school. (Interview by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen)

he Patch Panthers of Stuttgart beat the Ramstein Royals 7-2 in the championship game of the Department of Defense Dependents School’s tournament May 26 on Ramstein. This marks the third championship in a row for the Panthers, each time facing off against the Royals. The Panthers previously beat the Royals 10-9 in 2010 and 8-7 in 2011 before winning this year’s championship. “Both teams worked extremely hard to get here, these are two great programs,” said Gary Kellogg, a Panthers coach. “There was great sportsmanship from both teams, both having a good bunch of kids.” Practice makes perfect and when the Panthers weren’t playing games, they were working on fundamentals. “We spent a lot of time this year practicing for this tournament,” said Dylan Measells, the winning pitcher. “We practiced twice a day, even on weekends.” Measells held the Royals to three hits, no earned runs, two unearned and struck out five batters over the five-inning game. meaning this year, than any other. “My son is a senior, who just won his third straight championship game, how do you think I feel?” Kellogg said. “There are tears in my eyes and I couldn’t be more proud.” For Measells, this win was a fitting end to his
final year of high school baseball. “It feels great, having won my third straight championship,” said Measells. “I look forward to playing in college.” The panthers finished the year 17-0 and the Royals completed the season 18-1.
