NATO partners close out Saber Strike ’16 Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

TAPA TRAINING BASE, Estonia — More than 200 NATO service members gathered at Tapa Training Base, Estonia, for the closing ceremony of Saber Strike ’16 June 21. U.S. service members were only one component of the large-scale theater security cooperation exercise that began June 12. Participating nations included Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. The exercise was held in multiple locations throughout Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, facilitated cooperation among NATO allies and improved joint-operational capability across a range of missions to prepare the 13

U.S. forces in Europe participated in Saber Strike ’16, a long-standing, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed, U.S. Army Europe-led cooperative-training exercise that has been conducted annually since 2010. This year’s exercise focused on promoting interoperability with allies and regional partners. During the ceremony, leaders spoke about the efforts put forth by all who participated and thanked one another for

They also entered a C-17A Globemaster III aircraft, looked at the inside of the plane and sat in the pilot seat. “It was a good time hanging out with them, getting to show them everything and give them experience,” said Master Sgt. CAP cadets can vary from base to base. “It depends on how great of a relationship they have with their host squadrons,” Livesay said. “Here at the 86th, we have an outstanding relationship. We couldn’t be more pleased with the support we’ve gotten to make this encampment such a success. Team Ramstein has pulled all three wings together to make this happen, and it is awesome to see.” When the cadets visited the 721st AMXS, they received an hour-long

“We’re the basic training for a cadet,” said Maj. Michael Livesay, Ramstein Civil Air Patrol squadron commander. “It’s a one-week learning laboratory for them. We’ve had the opportunity to get perspectives from enlisted members and officers to talk to them about what it takes to become a leader in the Air Force.”

The civil air patrol cadets met with Airmen and civilians from all over Ramstein, starting with a briefing from Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander, about the importance of the Ramstein mission. They also visited with the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 86th Security Forces Squadron, Ramstein Fire Department and 76th Airlift Squadron and flew in a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft with the 37th Airlift Squadron. 86th FSS unveils Port Royal Mystery Escape Room by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Force Support Squadron Vogelweh Community Center unveiled the Port Royal Mystery Escape Room during a grand opening at 3 p.m. June 24 at Crossroads Community Center Annex on Vogelweh. The escape room is a pirate-themed event where participants have one hour to solve riddles and puzzles to get out of a room. The community center received funding for the escape room from Air Force Services Activity as part of its Recharge for Resiliency initiative that included 20 air bases worldwide. It is catered towards single Airmen, squadrons and other units but is open to anyone who is authorized to use Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs. “We are excited to offer the service members, families and civilian members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community another entertainment outlet to boost morale,” said Koy

Grant, 86th FSS Ramstein and Vogelweh community centers director. “Mystery Escape Room is a great event for units, squadrons, friends and families to bond while working toward a common goal in a fun and thrilling environment. We hope our customers enjoy the immersive, high-energy experience that we have created and look forward to offering this program for many years to come.” Participants can book the escape room by appointment on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 3:30, 5 and 6:30 p.m. or on Sundays at 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person or $100 for a group, and participants must be 16 years or older. The minimum number required to book the room is six people, and the maximum is 12. In case participants get stuck, a pirate captain is in the room as a moderator to offer helpful hints for a price and to add to the atmosphere. Some Airmen were selected to try their luck in a test run of the escape room. “They really want you to get into it like the characters are,” said Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs photo-

airplane and filled their eyes with wonderment of what it’s like to work on an airplane that completes missions day in and day out. It brings me back to when I was younger and I first started.” The CAP squadron commander wanted to show the cadets the wide variety of jobs available in the Air Force, some they may have not even realized were available. “I think CAP is important,” said Capt. Erin Wood, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron flight nurse. “That way they’re exposed a little bit to the military and can see all the different things. The Air Force is more than pilots; there are so many different jobs out there. Then they can make a more informed decision, and the more information they have the better.” While the main focus of the encampment’s tour at Ramstein was to emphasize leadership and show what life is like for a typical Airman, the program also offers structure and guidance for the cadets. “They were very disciplined,

which is a good thing for young kids,” Secord said. “It seemed like the team has a very good bunch of cadets, and they were very in-tune to it. I think that structure is good at a young age.” Another aspect of the tour included speaking with civilians to show the cadets that what they learn during the time in the program can be applied to more than only the military. “We also open up to business and civic leaders, because a leader isn’t just (in the) military,” Livesay said. “You can be a leader anywhere in the world, at any time, and that’s what we want our kids to know. The lessons in leadership that we teach through this program can take them well beyond the military.” For cadets, the CAP program offers the opportunity to test the waters and see if the military lifestyle is one they would enjoy. What brings them to the program varies from cadet to cadet. The CAP squadron leaders enjoy having the opportunity to shape and mold the future generation, regardless of what route they choose to take.

journalist and a test participant. “There were a lot of puzzles, locked chests, that kind of thing. My first thought was it looked like it was going to be a good time. I’m a puzzle guy. As soon as they said puzzles, I was hooked.” Employees of the community center worked together to make the escape room ready for the unveiling. “It was not just one individual person that made it happen,” Grant said. “All of it was done by our team. All the painting, wallpapering, finding all the various pieces of furniture for the room, it was a team effort.” The efforts of the community center were not in vain. “They did an awesome job putting it together,” Plummer said. “It’s definitely something very different. It makes you think and engages the audience. Two civil air patrol cadets sit in the flight deck of a C-17A Globemaster III aircraft during a tour June 21 on Ramstein. The 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hosted this portion of the tour, allowing the cadets to see inside the plane. CAP toured Ramstein from June 18 to 24 and visited squadrons associated with all three wings on base to get a glimpse of what life is like as an Airman.

“Whether it’s military, business or civic, that’s our next generation,” Livesay said. “They’re the guys we pass the torch off to, and if I had the opportunity to teach them what I know of leadership, I can sit back in my easy chair, when I’m old and

grey, and feel comfortable. I feel like I’ve made an impact on these kids.” CAP provides a unique opportunity for youth to experience life in the military, teaching discipline and leadership to the next generation of possible Airmen.

313th EOSS supports AMC missions transiting Ramstein

Staff Sgt. Jacob Johnson and Senior Airman Casey Tierney, 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight-equipment members, explain the features of a flight helmet June 21 on Ramstein. Both Johnson and Tierney are deployed to Ramstein as part of the 313th EOSS from Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs There are many things that can make or break the execution of a successful mission. Although a successful operation requires plenty of planning and coordination, the cooperation does not stop when the aircraft takes off. Even military aircrews sometimes need to make a pit stop on the way to where they are going. This is where the 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron comes in. As one of the many gears in the gigantic machine of the Air Mobility Command, the 313th EOSS takes care of

the AMC aircrews who stop over at Ramstein en route to deployment. “The 313th EOSS is specifically responsible for the command and control of all the 18th Air Force mobility aircraft that touch ground here at Ramstein,” said Master Sgt. William Sage, 313th EOSS Ramstein AMC superintendent. “We provide en route command and control; we provide the aircrews with their flight packages and set them up with billeting. We alert them (of their departure) and coordinate transportation.” Command and control is only a piece of the 313th EOSS’s total operations. Though the mission of the 313th EOSS primarily revolves around Air Mobility

minister. “It is also great to see that all of our nations are working together as one and that Saber Strike ’16 was a great success.” Brig. Gen. Blake Ortner, 29th Infantry Division commander and SbS ’16 co-exercise director, shared his thoughts on the events. “The most important thing that’s built during these exercises are the trusted relationships,” Ortner said. “You can’t schedule, plan or order that. Those trusted relationships are what make us truly strong as an alliance and also as a bilateral team with whatever nation we are working with.” SbS ’16 also featured the integration of U.S. close air support with allied and partnernation ground forces and the testing of U.S. air and naval deployment of forces and equipment. “The most impressive part of the exercise was the integration of the B-52 strategic

Command aircraft transiting through Ramstein, its operations transcend different Air Force career fields and technical specialties. “We have aircrew flightequipment personnel whose job is to provide life-support equipment for the (aircrew),” said Lt. Col. Lucas Jobe, 313th EOSS commander. “We also have aeromedical evacuation crew members. Their jobs are to fly on the C-17s and other aircraft … to pick up patients downrange and bring them back here. “And then we have a cyberteam whose job is to maintain the command and control systems that the AMC uses here,” Jobe continued. The 313th EOSS also has an intelligence team that briefs the aircrew about various security risks before going on deployment. These flights and teams of the 313th EOSS work together to support the AMC’s aircraft on the way to deployment locations. “For every single AMC mission which sends aircraft through Ramstein, we’re involved in making sure the crews are taken care of,” Jobe said. “We make sure they are prepared to (deploy) so they can safely operate the aircraft when they get there and that their equipment is good to go.” Though the mission can be wide-ranging, only a small portion of the 313th EOSS

bomber in a close air support role, as well as the A-10s that were used in (field training exercises) as well as live fires,” Ortner said. “For the first time in 32 years, the A-10s did an austere landing along a highway here in Estonia.” SbS ’16 went off without a hitch because of the hard work of partnered nations that sometimes endured obstacles to accomplish the mission. “Shared sacrifice has a benefit all of its own,” Ortner said. “When you have (service members) out there living together, sweating, stressed out, getting rained on and living through those conditions, real unity and trust are built.” Exercise Saber Strike is just one way the U.S. and allies improve the relationships built over the past 70 years and continues to provide strategic access critical to meet the NATO commitment to respond to threats against allies and partners.

are assigned as permanent party. “We are a small squadron,” said Robert McNeal, 313th EOSS superintendent. “We’re made up of a little over 30 permanent-party personnel, and we have deployed personnel who make up the rest. … So the bulk of our personnel are deployed here. “So we’re a true totalforce integrated squadron,” McNeal continued. “We are made up of active-duty, Air National Guard and reserve units.” Although the 313th EOSS is a small squadron, McNeal and his people cover a very large area of responsibility, including missions in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. “This is one of the busiest AMC hubs,” McNeal said. “Every aircraft that flows through here on an AMC mission, our personnel will touch (it) one way or another, whether it’s tracking the times or making sure the crews are briefed, alerted and set up for the next leg of the mission. … That couldn’t happen without our guys.

“We’re behind the scenes working to make sure the mission flows properly,” McNeal continued. McNeal said he is confident in the ability of the 313th EOSS to provide excellent support to AMC crew members transiting through Ramstein en route to a deployment location. The command post controllers, intelligence briefers, AFE personnel, cyberteam and aeromedical evacuation members all belong to one squadron and cooperate as one unit, McNeal said. “They’re top notch,” McNeal said. “We have a lot of people here who are eager to learn and want to be experts in their job(s). I think the sky’s the limit for where this squadron can go.” Though the personnel of the 313th EOSS come from different units and career fields, this does not hinder them from working together as a total-force organization to accomplish the mission of providing world-class command and control, aeromedical evacuation and global mobility support for the aircrews of the AMC.

Ramstein recruiters work around challenges, get job done Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua D. Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Every enlisted Airman has started his or her career at a recruiter’s office. Besides bringing in the Air Force’s next generation, a recruiter is generally responsible for making sure a recruit is physically and mentally qualified for military service before they ship out for their basic training. “Personally, I enjoy it; I love it a lot,” said Master Sgt. Leslie Sybert, 319th Recruiting Squadron European line officer recruiter, “I get to interact with people … and help them figure out what it is they want to do. If they have a goal, I help them meet that goal.” At an overseas recruiting location, there are considerable differences compared to recruiting in the U.S., says Sybert, but the job must still be done. “We have to do what we can,” Sybert said, “It’s challenging, but this is definitely a rewarding job. You just have to think outside the box.” Recruiters in the U.S. generally have the liberty to go out into the local area and engage the people, but at Ramstein, Sybert and her co-workers

do not have this privilege. “We can’t just go (off base) and walk up to an individual and ask, ‘Hey, do you want to join the Air Force?’” Sybert said. “We can’t do that here. We’re stuck on base.”

Tech. Sgt. Mubarak Rashid, 319th RCS enlisted accessions recruiter, explained that the small number of U.S. citizens or green card holders overseas is one of the factors which limit them from doing community

engagement off base. “If they’re not a U.S. citizen or at least a green card holder, they are ineligible to enlist,” Rashid said. See recruiters, Page 8

Air Force bids farewell to Welsh by Senior Airman Hailey Haux Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information WASHINGTON — Stealing a moment of silence, looking into the eyes of his wife, he takes a deep breath and prepares for what’s to come. Standing tall and proud, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III walks into a hangar in front of hundreds of onlookers, all there to bid him farewell. After 40 years of service, Welsh retired from the Air Force during a ceremony June 24 on Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Welsh’s journey began at the age of 23 when he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, donning his father’s second lieutenant bars. He became a pilot, accumulating more than 3,300 flight hours in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, T-37 Tweet and TG-7A motorized glider, and leaves behind a legacy of pride. “As Mark and Betty depart for their next adventure in life, the good news is they’re leaving behind a fantastic legacy, a legacy which is the core values of the Air Force themselves — integrity, service before self and excellence in all that they have done over the course of four decades,” Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said of the general and his wife. “And the best thing any Airman can ever really hope for is to find the right wingman in service to America,”

James continued. “And I have to say, I certainly found such a wingman in the fantastic partnership of Mark and Betty Welsh.” Through his service, Welsh inspired service members across all branches of the armed forces, even capturing the attention of his youngest son and influencing his decision to join the Marine Corps. In a sea of Air Force blue, the olive green Marine Corps uniform of 1st Lt. Matthew Welsh stood out as the young officer took the stage to retire his father. “Dad’s an extremely nice, personable man,” Matthew said. “When people meet him they are taken aback and wonder, ‘Is dad really that nice?’ The answer is, ‘Yes!’ But make no mistake about it, underneath all that is a barrelchested, red-blooded, Godfearing American that’s been swinging the war hammer for

“It’s (also) not the smartest thing to do … walking around town telling everybody you’re in the U.S. Air Force and that you’re a recruiter,” Rashid continued with a chuckle. Besides being confined to U.S. military bases, Sybert, Rashid and their co-workers do not have the luxury of a military entrance processing station nearby. Whatever work the MEPS would do with the recruits, the recruiters must do themselves. This includes administering the

the last 40 years for this country.” Matthew said his father taught him everything he needed to know about being a man and a leader. “Leaders stand in the pocket, and they take the hits, regardless of what is fair and what’s not,” Matthew said. “They take the insults and the direction from wherever it comes. … And they do what is right by the team, by the men and women. Leaders carry the respect of their organization and protect it at all costs.” Matthew gave a unique perspective on the wealth of experience his parents accumulated throughout their years of service. “What people don’t realize is that mom and dad are richer than most,” Matthew said. “This is a unique profession where value and success are not determined by fame or political gain. In addition to doing extra work in recruiting overseas, the recruiters at Ramstein cover a very large area of responsibility. “We service the entire European theater,” Rashid said. “We (also) cover Africa and the Middle East. If (a prospect is) a dual citizen or an American living abroad anywhere in the world, we’re going to cover them as well.”

rency is one of a different kind … earned through the blood of their brothers and sisters, forged through the sweat and tears of combat, compounded by the daily actions and subsequent pride developed through the men and women of our armed services and solidified by the deep respect they have earned through their brothersand sisters-in-arms and their own family.” With an A-10 and F-16 anchored in each corner and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard in formation under an oversized American flag draped from the ceiling, Welsh addressed the crowd as if he knew every single person in the room. “As American Airmen we serve in the greatest Air Force in history, and we serve in the mightiest joint force anyone has ever seen. And we serve the greatest nation and the greatest citizens on earth,”

The recruiters at Ramstein have come up with different ways to work around their geographic separation from the U.S. and MEPS. “We have a lot of technology now,” Sybert said. “We do a video chat, and that counts as the face-to-face meeting.” Though it comes with additional challenges, Sybert and Rashid both take pride in their job of recruiting from Ramstein. “It’s a challenge, but it’s exciting because we get to live overseas,” Rashid said. “Most recruiters can

Welsh said. “What a privilege it has been to stand beside you; thanks for allowing me to do so. “To the Airmen of the Air Force, thank you for making me proud each and every day to stand beside you and thanks for keeping me humble enough to try and be worthy of your trust,” Welsh continued. “You are magnificent. No one has committed more to the fight over the past 25 years, no one is more critical to warfighting success and no one is prouder to serve than an American Airman. It has been the honor of my life to represent you. Thank you for who you are. I’ll miss you.” Reflecting on his career, one thing stayed constant through all the moves and changes — the support of his family and, most importantly, his wife. “I have had an embarrassingly wonderful and blessed life,” Welsh said. “I grew up in the greatest family ever. I had the best mom any child has ever had, a father who is still the greatest role model I have ever met and who I know is very proud as he looks down on us today. I had the best brother and sisters on earth and better friends than I deserved. Then I met Betty, and my world was complete. She is everything; she is the story of my life, and I can’t wait to write the next chapter.” As a drum beats loudly signaling the start of one final march, flights of Airmen pass by, culminating the ceremony. Welsh then takes the hand of his beloved and leaves the hangar arm in arm to start off on their next adventure.

spend a full career in recruiting and never come overseas, so we were lucky enough to be able to recruit (here).” Being overseas is a benefit, but it’s not the only reward the recruiters receive for doing their job. “We provide a great quality of life and change peoples’ lives every day,” Sybert said. “There’s nothing more rewarding than that, to take somebody from their current situation and helping them meet their needs or goals, and we do that.” To speak with a recruiter, call 314-480-3430 or 06371-47-3430.

Lt. Gen. Nadja West, surgeon general and commanding general, U.S. Army Medical Command, passes the Regional Health Command Europe guidon to Col. (promotable) Dennis LeMaster, incoming RHCE commander, signifying his assumption of command of RHCE during a change of command ceremony June 24 on Sembach Kaserne.

Courtesy of Regional Health Command Europe Public Affairs With a ceremonial passing of the colors, Col. (promotable) Dennis P. LeMaster assumed command of Regional Health Command Europe from Brig. Gen. Norvell V. Coots June 24 on Sembach Kaserne. Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, surgeon general and commanding general, U.S. Army Medical Command, presided over the ceremony. LeMaster was previously the commander at Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson, Colorado. Coots is set to retire in July, ending a distinguished career of nearly 36 years of service. West praised both the outgoing and incoming commanders. “I’ve known (Coots) since we were dermatology residents. He is not only a superb leader but he is also an outstanding person,” West said, referencing some of the humanitarian work Coots is involved in. “We will miss him, and the Army will miss him. While we are sad to see him go, we are happy to welcome an equally qualified and competent leader in Col. LeMaster.” She also said that LeMaster, who will be promoted to brigadier general July 8, is the right person at the right time to command RHCE. “Your knowledge and experience will be vital to ensuring Army medicine is the nation’s premier expeditionary and globally integrated medical

force, ready to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow,” West said. LeMaster commended the RHCE team for its reputation of excellence and committed to maintaining and enhancing the team’s efforts. “We will continue to build upon the magnificent work already done,” LeMaster said. “We will be globally integrated and interoperable, leading the way in military medicine as we sustain and strengthen enduring relationships with our NATO allies, our strategic multinational partners and our sister services. Such collaboration is vital to Strong Europe and will allow us to mass the full spectrum of medical care for those who need it, at the moment they need it.” Regional Health Command Europe supports military personnel and families serving in U.S. Army Europe, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S Central Command areas of operation. The command operates Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the only United States military referral center offering subspecialty care in Europe; a regional public health laboratory; Medical Department Activity Bavaria headquartered in Vilseck, Germany; 11 outpatient medical clinics; 14 dental clinics; and 16 veterinary clinics in military communities in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Stuffed Onions with BBQ Ground Meat & Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms Stuffed Onions

Ingredients (for 4 people) 2 extra large onions (similar to Vidalia onion size) peeled, cut in half, and remove all but the outer two layers of onion. Chop the inner onion into finely diced pieces. 4 small mushrooms, finely diced A little more than 1 pound of either beef or beef and pork mixed ground meat 3 tablespoons Chopped parsley 3 tablespoons bread crumbs 5 tablespoons soy sauce 5 tablespoons BBQ sauce 1 tablespoons ketchup 1 tablespoons brown sugar 20 pieces of bacon, sliced less than one millimeter thin (found on the German economy) Mix 2 tablespoons soy sauce with 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce. Set aside as sauce to brush on onions while they are on the grill. Mix the meat with 2 tablespoons of the finely diced onions and the remaining ingredients, except the bacon slices. Divide the meat into 4 equal pieces. With the 4 outer layers of onion, fill with the meat mixture in heaping format to make a ball. Put a second onion layer on top of each meat mixture, making a firm onion ball. Wrap 5 pieces of bacon around each onion ball, covering all of the onion with bacon slices. Preheat grill to medium heat. Put aluminum foil on grill. As you place each onion ball on the grill, brush it with the BBQ/soy sauce mixture. Cook for 5 minutes on a covered grill. Brush

more sauce on. Cook another 5 minutes. Repeat a 3rd time so total cook time is 15 minutes. If you would like a smoke flavor, take the onion balls off of the foil for the last 5 minutes. You have an amazing BBQ main course.

Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms

Ingredients (for 4 people) 8 large Portobello mushrooms 2 tablespoons finely diced onions 2 large tomatoes, one diced and one sliced ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika ¼ teaspoon oregano ¼ teaspoon onion powder Mix all seasonings together in small cup. Remove the stems from the mushrooms and finely dice them. Before filling each mushroom cap, sprinkle each cap with seasoning mixture. Mix diced onions, diced tomatoes and seasonings with the diced stems. Fill each mushroom cap with mixture. Put olive oil on 8 large squares of aluminum foil. Put the filled mushroom caps on single sheets of aluminum foil. Place one slice of tomato on the top of each stuffed mushroom cap. Wrap foil around each mushroom. Place on a medium hot grill for 8-10 minutes. A light summer salad will make a perfect accompaniment for your summer BBQ dinner.

‘Viper Medics’ host ‘Torun Games’ during Anakonda ’16 by Capt. Richard Skinner and Capt. Jeku Arce 421st Medical Battalion (Multifunctional) and 30th Medical Brigade Public Affairs

TORUN, Poland — Taking a break from river crossings, airborne operations and other intense training events at exercises Anakonda ’16 and Swift Response ’16, the 421st Medical Battalion (Multifunctional) hosted a friendly sports competition between U.S., Polish and U.K. forces June 8. The “Torun Games” included a three-legged race using white engineer tape, a water-jug relay race, a sandbag relay race and a baton relay race as the final event. Sgt. tant to other military nations and used it as a way to bring the Polish 1st Army Field Hospital, 10th Military Hospital; and the U.K.’s

16th Medical Regiment together. “I realized that we had a perfect opportunity to share our knowledge and culture by hosting a team sports

event with our allies,” Hilton said. “I am glad to be a part of exercise Swift Response ’16 (and) Anakonda ’16 and to have made new friends with our partners through working together and through this event.” The Polish 1st Army Field Hospital took first place with the 421st MMB coming in second and the U.K.’s 16th Medical Regiment trailing in third. Informal social and leisure events like this one are becoming more common in multinational exercises, as Soldiers and leaders learn that these events help build relationships which in turn improves the partner nations’ ability to work together effectively. The three units were working together to provide medical support to a variety of Anakonda ’16 training events, including a multinational airborne operation and a mass casualty exercise.

The annual drifting fest between Frankenstein and Waldleiningen presents old craftsmanship demonstrations, musical entertainment and children’s activities Sunday.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The traditional drifting fest in Leinbach Valley between Frankenstein and Waldleiningen will take place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Biedenbacher Woog pond. In addition to enjoying an attractive entertaining program for the young and old, visitors will experience how logging and the drifting of timber worked 160 years ago. Drifting timber is the transportation of wood on water. At 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., visitors can watch demonstrations of logging with horses and experience how wood was transported on creeks through Leinbach Valley. Forestry workers will show how the use of working horses in wooded and agricultural areas is still being maintained. Like in recent years, children can have fun participating in a bark boat race and win prizes, or they can watch the work of beekeepers. Bugle musicians will entertain the audience. For the first time, organizers offer a free guided mountain bike tour starting at 10 a.m. near the public pool in Hochspeyer, Am Weiherberg 7, to the drifing fest area. The tour is about 25 kilometers long and easy enough for beginners. After

passing the altitude difference of 300 meters, bikers can enjoy culinary specialties such as grilled game dishes, Palatinate delicacies, homemade cakes as well as coffee and beverages. Biedenbacher Woog is located between Frankenstein and Waldleiningen. Visitors can get there by foot, bicycle, horse or carriage. It is not possible to drive in privately

owned vehicles to the fest area. A free shuttle service will be available. Shuttles will leave Frankenstein at various times from the train station and Alter Postplatz. In Waldleininingen, the shuttle stop will be next to the Paul-Muench-Scheune barn. Signs will lead to the bus stops. For more information and shuttle-bus times, visit

Story courtesy of History Cologne is known to be one of the oldest German cities and dates back to the time of the Romans as early as the 1st century. The city served as a Roman capital until it was captured by the Franks in 455. In the Middle Ages Cologne thrived in trade and commerce and was an important link between the east and west of Europe. Through the centuries there have been many highs and lows of the city, including the destruction of most of the city during World War II.

The Cologne Cathedral (Dom) The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites. Construction began in 1248 and halted unfinished in 1473. Work restarted in 19th century and completed to the original plan in 1880. The cathedral was heavily bombed during WWII but repaired in 1956. The High Altar (made of black and white marble) was installed in 1322 and is one of the church’s treasures. Another treasure is the reliquary Shrine of the Three Kings which was created by Nicolas of Verdun in 1190. Visitors can climb up the 509 steps to the viewing platform to take in fantastic views of the Rhine. This ancient structure looks incredible both at night and during the day- a place you must visit.. Shopping and the Rhine Shop till you drop in Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse. There you will find the latest German fashions and the most sought after items. And
