Blood, sweat, tears: Raven training at Ramstein Story and photos by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The gym echoed with sounds of bodies hitting the floor as instructors watched their students wrestle each other to the ground. The students trained tirelessly for the past week and were showing signs of wear and tear: cuts, bruises, and red, sweaty faces steaming with pain. Their instructors watched with stoic faces and eyes as cold as ice; if the students can’t handle the heat here, how can they handle it when they are on a real mission? “Keep your heads off the mat,” yelled one of the instructors. “What are you doing? Come on, figure it out!” “Find a way to get out of that choke-hold,” yelled another. This is the Phoenix Raven See RAVEN TRAINING, Page 7

Talk about it: resources and support for pregnancy and infant loss within KMC Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Maj. Mark Rendon, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz family and life chaplain, speaks at a “Wave of Light Celebration” at the Java Café in December 2017 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, where organizations and communities everywhere host events to commemorate the lives parents and families have lost due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss. Rendon is on a mission to make pregnancy and infant loss awareness more than just an annual event within the KMC.

“Oftentimes, people don’t know resources are out there,” said Maj. Mark Rendon, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz family and life chaplain. “Or, they’re unaware of how to get these resources. And sometimes, it’s just not a subject that is easily talked about with others, because the loss of a child is very difficult.” October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, where organizations and communities everywhere host events to commemorate the lives parents and

families have lost due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss. But, Chaplain Rendon is on a mission to make pregnancy and infant loss awareness more than just an annual event within the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Rendon, his wife Tania, and son AJ, hosted a “Wave of Light Celebration” at the Java Café on Rhine Ordnance Barracks in December 2017, to join parents and families within the KMC who’ve experienced this particular kind of loss. “To be transparent and vulnerable, my wife and I have expeSee TALK ABOUT IT, Page 2

In our experience, there was little to no support of any kind.” According to the Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support website, www. nationalshare.org, nearly one in four pregnancies ends in loss. “The goal of this event was to recognize and appreciate the sanctity of life for each moment every baby brought joy to every family with every heartbeat,” Rendon said. “My hope is that families can experience this time together celebrating life knowing they’re not alone, and that there are others who share similar experiences.” When the Rendons were anticipating their first child, they didn’t know what to expect. “I was really excited, I had never been through this before,” Rendon said. “I was looking at the screen, and I was anticipating, and I was nervous…and the doctor left the room.” That was the first of three losses the Rendons experienced as parents. “In 2005, when we had our first loss, MEND, Mommies Endur ing Neonatal Death, was the only organization or community I could find online at the time,” said Tania. Mommies Enduring Neonatal Death is a nonprofit organization that

Kaiserslautern Military Community members gather at a “Wave of Light Celebration” at the Java Café in December 2017 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The event joined parents and families within the KMC who’ve experienced miscarriage, stillborn, and infant loss. Families experienced this time together celebrating life knowing they’re not alone, and that there are others who share similar experiences.

reaches out to families who have suffered the loss of a baby, and hosts a variety of support groups throughout the nation. The MEND website maintains and regularly updates a list of resources for those who’ve needed it the last 19 years, including bi-monthly newsletters, music, books and publications, and family memorials. Another resource, the Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support, is a community that can provide support for grandparents, siblings, and others in the

family unit. Their services include bedside companions, phone support, faceto-face support group meetings, resource packets, private online communities, memorial events, training for caregivers, and more. The KMC is making steps toward becoming a community that has a variety of choices and support for those that have experienced the tragic loss of a baby. Rendon hosts the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group every third Tuesday of the month at ROB, Bldg. 277, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“How do I honor my babies?” Rendon asked. “They are a part of my life. It’s not like grieving the end of an older relative’s life. They’d lived a fruitful, meaningful, full life. How can a baby? You never stop grieving, thinking about all that they could’ve become.” The Rendons didn’t really begin to heal until after their third loss, Rendon said. “Our story began to be a teaching point for others,” Rendon said. “It still hurt, but I set forth on a path to which God was calling me, to help heal the wounded.

That is how I’m going to honor my babies.” The journey of grief within this experience is often overlooked, undermined, or unrecognized, Rendon said. “My wife and I would love the opportunity to serve our community in a unique and special way in the area of pregnancy and infant loss,” Rendon said. “I really appreciate the support to all our families throughout the KMC in so many areas. It’s an honor and privilege to serve alongside all of you.”

USAFE Band wins Air Force award by Master Sgt. Michelle Harris U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band “The U.S. Armed Forces have a secret weapon,” reported Monocle Magazine in a June 2017 article entitled ‘Louder than Bombs.’ It’s “a jazz band that knows how to take a nation by storm.” After 364 performances through 29 countries in 2017, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band has won the Air Force’s most effective public affairs communication program award for providing Departments of Defense and State unique placement in hard-to-access information environments, such as Ukraine. “Sharing a bond of trust despite language and cultural barriers is a powerful diplomatic tool that can last a lifetime,” said Lt. Col. Don Schofield, USAFE Band commander. “It is very rewarding to connect with people from many countries and offer them a taste of American culture. For many, the USAFE Band is their first contact with

Americans. We pose for pictures with audience members after each performance in order to give personal contact. Band members also bring iconic American symbols such as signed baseballs and baseball cards to give away to kids as mementos.” The Brig. Gen. Harry Dalton Award is presented to the Public Affairs organization that best advances Air Force priorities and achieves mission objectives through integrated research, planning, execution, and evaluation of communication capabilities during the year. This is a milestone for Air Force Public Affairs, as the selection of the USAFE Band represents the first time that an Air Force band has won the Dalton Award at the Headquarters Air Force level. The USAFE Band’s live performances and media broadcasts reached more than 1.12 billion viewers internationally in 2017. The band integrated with U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, USAFE, and Air Forces Africa

priorities to help further senior leader objectives. Highlights for the band included troop morale missions in Niger, network performances in Moldova, and performing alongside the Ukrainian military band during their internationally broadcast Independence Day celebration. “Conducting the Ukrainian national anthem on live television during their celebration was one of the most cherished memories that I have,” said Schofield. “Being on the location in Kiev where the revolution started felt like sacred ground. It was not lost on me that the Ukrainian government asked an American to lead their national anthem on Independence Day. It was a graceful example of a diplomatic relationship between two countries built on commitment and trust.” The USAFE Band tailors each performance to match the local cultural, political, and security climates,” said Capt. Justin Lewis, USAFE Band operations officer. “Its goal

is to leverage commonalities between cultures and bring people together. It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring messages of peace and hope to so many people in a non-threatening way. From a planning perspective, it can be a real challenge. We may be in Botswana one week performing in villages hours from a military base, and the next week performing in Sweden alongside other military organizations from different countries. Having the correct country clearance documents, logistics, cultural understanding, and even language keeps us on our toes.” USAFE Band performances in Europe and Africa generate positive coverage about American presence and partnership. Recent performances in seven Eastern Ukraine cities generated 215 pro-United States stories in the Ukrainian and Russian press and provided a 17 percent boost in pro U.S. social media in the Ukrainian cities that the band visited. The United States Ambassador to Serbia called

the USAFE Band “the core of democracy” in response to the effects created by the performances that brought Serbian and United States senior leaders together. What does 2018 hold for the USAFE Band? Schofield is excited about the possibilities. “2018 is the 100th anniversary for Baltic independence,” he said. “This is an excellent opportunity to stand beside our partners as they celebrate independence, as well as get out into their communities and help celebrate their freedom. 2018 is also the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, and the USAFE Band will travel throughout Germany helping celebrate this milestone of human cooperation. I am proud of this team and their ability to help bring these diverse missions together,” said Master Sgt. Rebecca Collins, USAFE Band director of operations. “No matter where we send our Airmen, we leverage soft power to further the security objectives of USAFE and EUCOM.”

A more personal approach with the Commander Advanced Notification process by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs All commanders and senior raters are now receiving seven-day advanced notifications of assignments for their Airmen as part of an initiative which began Jan. 18 on Ramstein Air Base. For pay grades of E-8 and below and O-5 and below, assignments will now go in advance to Military Personnel Flight who disseminate the information to unit commanders and senior raters seven days before the official notification to Airmen. According to an Air Force Personnel Center Strategic Command message, the idea was identified after commanders discussed being unaware of the assignments being given to their Airmen. “The process is bringing back the value of allowing the commanders to be more personable with their Airmen,” said Tech. Sgt. Tiffany Hilt, 786th Force Support Squadron NCOIC of base relocations. “With the Commander Advanced Notification process, it really lets the commanders be more hands on and involved.” Commander’s responsibilities with

this new process include verifying if any assignment ineligibility factors exist after receiving assignment notification and ensuring Airmen log into virtual MPF for their official assignment notification no later than seven calendar days after receipt of the notification email. Airmen responsibilities include online acknowledgment of the official notification and verification of their military and personal email addresses on virtual MPF. Airmen may also request a projected departure date change through their supervisor and commander. The seven-day period for commanders to meet with their Airmen about upcoming assignments is not intended to be a negotiation above already existing assignment rule sets. The Air Force Personnel Center is ready for any unanticipated situations users may be experiencing and they encourage feedback throughout the introduction of this new process. For questions and inquiries on this new initiative please contact the AFPC Military Assignments Programs Branch at afpc.dp3am. workflow@us.af.mil.

Refuting four ‘Tooth’ Fairy tales by Capt. Samuel Fowler 86th Dental Squadron As parents, we are completely invested in ensuring our child’s health and well-being. However, many of us may find it can be very difficult to decipher fact from myth when it comes to oral health. Below you will find a few of the most common misleading myths about children’s dental health that have the potential to misguide you from doing what is best for your child. Myth #1: If my child has a cavity, it means they need to brush harder. If your child is brushing twice daily and flossing once daily, yet they are still developing cavities, then brushing harder is not the solution. Not only should we evaluate oral hygiene, but we should also consider their nutrition. Frequent snacking on sugary foods or carrying around a cup of apple juice with frequent sips spread out over the entire day are two of the most common causes of cavities in our little ones. Brushing harder is a common misconception and, unfortunately, doing so can actually cause more harm than good.

In fact, brushing too hard can actually be damaging to both teeth and gums. When it comes to good oral hygiene, it is all about proper technique. The plaque on our teeth actually comes off very easily with a light oscillating stroke at a 45-degree angle to the gumline, where teeth and gums meet. When it comes to brushing your teeth, brush smarter, not harder. Myth #2: My child should not brush or floss as often if it causes their gums to bleed. Have you ever noticed after your child obtains a small cut or scratch that the surrounding tissue becomes red, swollen, and possibly painful? Those are signs that their immune system is fighting off germs that should not be there in order to prevent infection. The same process happens with our gums if we do not brush and floss regularly. When bacteria build up beneath our gums, it can result in red and swollen gum tissue that tends to bleed easily upon contact. This inflammation of the gum tissue is called gingivitis, and it can only be eliminated and prevented with consistent and proper oral hygiene. After one week of brushing twice daily and floss-

ing once daily, you will notice that your child’s gum tissue will return to a state of health with a pink coloration and no signs of bleeding. Myth #3: My child’s toothache will eventually heal itself and go away over time. If your child falls and scrapes their knee, it will generally hurt for a few days, but over time the body will heal itself without any medical intervention. Therefore, why wouldn’t a toothache do the same thing? Unfortunately, once bacteria has penetrated through the enamel, the outermost layer of the tooth, there is no way for the tooth to repair itself. Bacteria forms an offensive front that expands toward the center of the tooth where the blood and nerve supply is housed. Possible consequences include pain and development of an infection that may negatively affect the development of the permanent teeth. This destructive process can be halted through the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride and, or, the physical removal of the bacteria and placement of a filling or crown. Taking your child to see the dentist on a regular basis can actually save you a lot of time, money, and heartache.

Pro-activity is the key to prevention. Myth #4: Any problems with my child’s baby teeth are not a big deal because they will just fall out anyway. This is perhaps one of the most common and damaging myths about children’s dental health. While it is true that all baby teeth will be replaced with permanent teeth, it should be emphasized that baby teeth perform an invaluable role in your child’s growth and development. Teeth are important not only for eating, but also for speaking and smiling as well. Premature loss of baby teeth can be tied to malnutrition, speech impediments, and social issues. Furthermore, baby teeth function to maintain space in your child’s mouth for permanent teeth. Premature loss of baby teeth can increase the likelihood of tooth crowding and the need for dental intervention (such as braces) in the future. In short, every tooth matters. Be sure to take the time to teach your kids about the importance of brushing and flossing their baby teeth so that when their permanent teeth come in they will have the skills they need to keep them clean and healthy.

Supporting teens through the dating years by Family Advocacy Adolescence is a difficult time not only for teens, but also for parents. Many changes take place physically and emotionally. The need for independence and support take a conflicting seat. It may seem like teens do not want or need their parents support, but guidance and consistency provide comfort during a confusing period. As a parent, talking to your children about the birds and bees may be uncomfortable; and the thought of talking to them about dating may just push you over the edge. It is important to put your fears aside and provide them valid information based on your families’ morals and values. Would you rather your teen hear about dating and relationships from you or receive skewed information from the media and/or their peers? You may be wondering how to begin talking to your teen about dating. The following tips may help.

1. Decide your families’ values before you talk to your teen. Decide what you as a parent/s are ok with in regards to dating. Having a clear plan ahead of time, may help to keep you from being taken off guard if something comes up in conversation. If a topic comes up that you do not have an answer for, it’s ok to get back to them. 2. Develop a bond with your teen. Participate in and share experiences with your teen that are of interest to them (even if it is not important to you). Have your teen plan a point of interest on your next vacation, choose a place to eat or

movie to see. The closer your teen feels to you, the more likely they are to open up to you. 3. Use everyday life, as an opportunity to start conversations. When you see a scenario played out on TV, or in public, talk about it. Ask your teen, “how they would feel,” or “what would they do if they were in that situation?” Have them explain “pop culture” to you from their point of view. Be open and non-critical to their explanation. This is an opportunity for you to understand their world and where they are coming from.

4. Talk about their friends. Ask who they hang out with. Inquire (in a non-detective manner) their friends’ ages, interests, and affiliations. This is a great opportunity to ask if their friends are dating. Get feedback from them about their friend’s relationships. 5. Provide support. Let your teen know they can come to you with their problems. Be open, supportive, and attentive if they want to talk to you. Just as you are nervous talking to them, they are also nervous about talking to you. As parents, it’s important for you to be a positive role model. Your teens are looking to you for guidance on how the world works even when it seems like they have it all figured out. For more information on teen dating go to www.loveisrespect.org/ or www. futureswithoutviolence.org/. There are many websites and books available with information for parents.

February 9, 2018 RAVEN TRAINING, from Page 1 Qualification Course, which is believed by some to be the most rigorous training program in the Air Force security forces world. The Air Mobility Command’s Phoenix Raven program centers upon the concept of specially-trained security forces Airmen flying with and protecting AMC aircraft around the world. “The (purpose of the Ravens) is to provide close-in security for aircraft and airfields that AMC has deemed as having inadequate security,” said Staff Sgt. Joseph McGuire, 421st Combat Training Squadron Phoenix Raven Qualification Course instructor. “We guard the aircraft, protect the personnel, and whatever else is on board.” This particular class, however, is different: instead of taking place at the Raven program’s training hub at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, it was conducted by a mobile training team sent to U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa. The Raven team came to Ramstein Air Base upon the request of the 86th Airlift Wing and USAFEAFAFRICA leadership, said Master Sgt. Sean Cunningham, 421st CTS Phoenix Raven Qualification Course director. While the pressure and stress the instructors push onto the students may seem harsh to some people, it all serves as preparation for the realities they will face during real-world operations, said Cunningham, who served as the team lead for the MTT which went to Ramstein. “If they are unable to complete the tasks to pass here in training, it casts doubt on their ability to accomplish their duties when they’re downrange, possibly tired and stressed with absolutely no one to help them out but themselves,” he said. The students in the course

Kaiserslautern American came from three squadrons in the Kaiserslautern Military Community: The 86th and 435th Security Forces Squadrons, and the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron. The course involves vigorous physical training sessions, Armament Systems and Procedures Baton training, use-of-force scenarios, combatives classes, and live-fire training, as well as 15 academic classes. McGuire added that it is not uncommon for some students to fail the course and get sent home. A few have already washed out since they started on Jan. 22. “It is extremely hard,” he said. “You have to be mentally and physically tough. You have to have heart. You have to have dedication and mental tenacity. And you have to be able to make proper decisions while being in a stressful environment.” Those that do make it through the course are rewarded with an illustrious career and a place among an elite group of security forces Airmen, McGuire added. “For me personally it’s the most rewarding thing as a security forces member,” McGuire said. “They get to fly with senior government officials, they get to see the world, and be a part of something bigger than themselves.” Students who graduate from the program receive the Raven tab which they may wear on their uniform, and also a coin with their Raven number — a number which stays with them for the rest of their career. As for the students currently taking part in the Raven Qualification Course at Ramstein, they have more obstacles to overcome before they can even see that number. They still have about two more weeks of training before they can call themselves Ravens. Until then, the instructors will continue to apply pressure.

Leaders unite for Knights Week basis in their battalions or companies,” said Col. Michelle Donahue, commander of the Knights Brigade. Donahue believes events like Knights Week ensure a ready sustainment brigade. Each company and battalion plays a role in supporting the freedom of maneuver and extending the operational reach for a strong Europe. First sergeants, sergeants major, and commanders participated in refreshment trainings on subjects like legal, Army schools, threat analysis, and the Digital Training Management System. Future leaders were also able to get something out of the event. Sgt. 1st Class Darnell Scott, HHC, 16th Special Troops Battalion platoon sergeant, held the role of acting first sergeant while the company’s command team was away for a mission. Scott had an advantage to see what his career will look like in the future by participating in Knights Week. He and other leaders who participated had a better understanding of how to prepare and train their Soldiers with more in-depth looks at topics like chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear defense,

electronic warfare, and threat analysis. “This week I saw what I have to look forward to when I earn the rank of first sergeant,” Scott said. “Becoming more acquainted with other company first sergeants of the brigade and attending

by Sgt. DJ Borden 16th Sustainment Brigade Public Affairs Senior leaders of the 16th Sustainment Brigade came together for Knights Week Jan. 22 to 25 in Baumholder. Company, battalion, and brigade leadership gathered for team-building social activities and command briefs to ensure leaders share an understanding of brigade operations. “The purpose of Knights Week is to improve unit cohesion throughout the brigade,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Frank Graham, senior enlisted advisor of the Knights Brigade. “With stronger command teams we can continue doing our part in ensuring a strong Europe.” The week started with a high-intensity interval training session at the Hall of Champions Gym, which changed the pace of normal physical readiness training. “Having our leaders come together in both social and duty-related settings is an excellent way to strengthen the camaraderie and refresh them on topics they may not come across on a daily

the leaders’ trainings with them was a good learning experience.” Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mohamed Kherbouche, electronic warfare technician and brigade operations officer, organized Knights Week and mentioned that due to the government shutdown, members of the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion were unable to attend the event physically, but sat in on the briefs through video teleconference. “Despite the obstacles the shutdown caused, the week went well with great training support activity, electronic warfare, and cyber electromagnetic activity briefs,” said Kherbouche. “The command teams broke away from their everyday duties, while refreshing on a few duty-related topics and had a good time together.” The Knights Brigade leaders went bowling at the Strikers Bowling Center and had a company command teams’ dinner at the Hard Rock Diner. Command teams became more familiar with fellow unit leaders and their role in the brigade. “It is important that every level of leadership, from company to brigade, understand their roles and the roles and responsibilities of their counterparts to work better together,” Graham said. After a week of briefs and development trainings, the leadership built more cohesion, which was Donahue’s ultimate goal. “With stronger leaders we will have even stronger Soldiers and continue to improve in our mission to create a Strong Europe as a result,” Donahue said.

USAREUR recognizes IMCOM-Europe employee by Ray Johnson Installation Management Command Europe Public Affairs Office U.S. Army Europe presented its highest honor for the personnel community to a member of Installation Management Command-Europe. Deborah McGlothlin received the Frederick E. Vollrath Human Resource Award for Excellence, which recognizes HR professionals for quality service and leadership. “Winning was a complete surprise,” said McGlothlin. “As the first Senior Civilian of the Year awardee from IMCOM, I feel that I represent all the HR professionals who usually work in the background, but play a vital role in making things happen for Soldiers and their families.” As chief of family travel, McGlothlin is responsible for processing and approving requests for family members who accompany Soldiers here overseas. Last year, she handled more than 5,000 appli-

cations, along with almost 500 submissions for student travel funding. Additionally, she served on the command’s Organizational Inspection Program team, provided Status of Forces Agreement support and took on the role of Retirement Service Officer when needed. McGlothlin chose the human resources field more than 35 years ago, she said, because “I saw the impact that it makes on the lives of others. What I do every day touches someone.” This people-first philosophy is what draws accolades from those who work alongside her. “Her ability to think outside the box, and to assist others, clearly sets her apart from her peers,” said Dan Kessinger, chief of IMCOMEurope’s military personnel branch. Plus, he added, “she constantly wants to give back to the HR community.” McGlothlin was one of six Vollrath awardees recognized by Brig. Gen. Kate Leah, U.S. Army Europe’s deputy commanding gen-

eral for mobilization and reserve affairs, during a ceremony held Jan. 10. Leahy emphasized the importance of the program in highlighting those who deliver the HR mission. “There are HR professionals within USAREUR,” she said, “that are doing superb work day in and day out, literally seeking no recognition other than their own realization that what they are doing is worthwhile and taking satisfaction in helping people.” The program itself is named after retired Lt. Gen. Frederick E. Vollrath, a former USAREUR deputy chief of staff for personnel who also served as the assistant secretary of defense for personnel and readiness. During the initial award ceremony in 2010, Vollrath told attendees that the only reason HR exists “is to take care of other people by providing good service.” However, he cautioned, “just giving somebody what they would like

isn’t a definition of good service. The key to good service is the ‘how.’ In the human resource business, you have to pay attention to the ‘how’ not the ‘what.’” (Additional information provided by USAREUR Public Affairs Off ice)

New moms at LRMC have more privacy, enhanced experience

New parents Angela and Joshua Bowman calm newborn Ellie in one of the newly renovated Mother Baby Unit rooms Jan. 30 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Moms who give birth at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will now have an even more comfortable and relaxing space as renovations in the Mother Baby Unit have been completed. One major update was building two additions onto the existing 1953 hospital building, creating space in six of the 10 rooms for large bathrooms with a toilet, sink and walk-in shower to offer moms, dads and visitors more privacy and convenience. “We are very fortunate to take part in such an important experience in a woman’s life, and if we can give her some comfort, privacy and space, that will all contribute to her having the best post-delivery experience possible,” Chief of the LRMC’s Division of Women’s Health and Newborn Care Col. Sandra Hernandez said during a ribbon cutting ceremony Jan. 25. Hernandez explained that during busy periods some moms may share a room or may be assigned to the four remaining original rooms, which have a toilet and sink in the room or a Jack and Jill full bathroom, which is a bathroom shared between two patient rooms. Each renovated room also has space for baby bassinets near the bed and even in the restrooms so mom can choose to keep baby nearby while she showers. “The staff here has been so nice and the room is awesome,” said new mom Angela Bowman. “It’s been great to have so much space even in the bathroom and shower so my husband

can help me, especially right after the birth when walking and standing can be a little hard. At one point we were in there with two nurses and I can tell you that four people fit pretty comfortably.” Dad Joshua Bowman shared his story of a European joking with him about how Americans like their space so much that they like to dance in their bathrooms. “We actually could dance in this one!” he said. In addition to the Mother-Baby Unit renovation, the Labor & Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic are also being outfitted with upgraded décor to bring a soothing feel to the areas. Patients will see new artwork on the walls, ceiling display tiles with a relaxing cloud motif, window treatments and patient privacy curtains. Although the LRMC facility is the oldest in Army Medicine and a new facility is being built, hospital Commander Col. Timothy Hudson explained that it still makes sense to renovate. “We continue improving and maintaining LRMC until the day we move to make this the best 1953 building possible for our patients,” said Hudson. “Every patient deserves the best that we can give them today.” The project, which took eight months of construction, came in ahead of schedule thanks to Regional Health Command Europe Architect Sandra M. Ploch and her expertise in healthcare architecture. Ploch worked with LRMC leaders and the Labor and Delivery staff to create the design

Fasching celebrations continue through Tuesday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany’s fifth season called “Fastnacht”or “Fasching” will continue through Tuesday with masquerade balls, dances, children’s parties and funny sessions. A special Fasching highlight are the Rose Monday parades. The most famous ones are those leading through the main Fasching cities of Mainz, Koeln and Duesseldorf. Spectators from Germany and throughout Europe come to these cities to watch the annual spectacle with decorated floats, bands, dancing and marching groups. Participants in vehicles throw out candy or hand out drinks to the crowds along the streets. It is traditional for revelers to sing, sway and dance during the five-hour parades which all start at 11:11 a.m. The official Fasching greet-

The official Fasching shout is “Ralau.” “We expect to welcome more than 1,000 participants joining our 67th parade on Shrove Tuesday,” said Hartmut Schaeffner, chief of the parade committee. Eleven carnival associations, 15 floats and 40 walking groups will start the parade at 2 p.m. “Also, eight music bands including the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Dixie Band will walk in the parade, that will be about 2 hours long.” Other U.S. participants will be the firefighters from the Ramstein Fire Department with a fire truck, the Roller Girls of the Apocalypse and Charles H. Cook with a 2016 Chevrolet Corvette American 650 horsepower. More than 50,000 promoting items to include candies will be tossed to spectators along the 2.4 km route. Food and beverage booths will be set up. To be able to finance each year’s parade, vendors will be out in the streets sell-

Valentine’s Day dates back to Roman times by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Legend says that Valentine of Terni, a friendly priest, who married young couples in love, died Feb. 14, 269. That’s why Valentine’s Day is observed Feb. 14. In many countries all over the world, Wedensday is the day, when husbands and wives, girlfriends and boyfriends have romantic dinners, give gifts, candy, cards and flowers to show their love and affection. The custom of giving flowers goes back to ancient Rome, where Valentine gave advice to young people, in particular regarding marriage. He did this despite Emperor Claudius’ prohibition. Claudius did not want his legionaries get – according to Christian customs – tied to wives and houses. But Valentine was looking for lovers, found them and married them. He passed out flowers to young couples that were walking by the garden of his monastery and asked the men to stay at home and not to go out into battle. One day Emperor Claudius wanted to meet Valentine to find out about his wisdom. The emperor requested Valentine to believe in Roman gods again. Then they would be friends. But the priest told him that he never would ask him to do so if he knew about the glory of God and his son Christ. During his visit with Claudius, a council member asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman gods.

Valentine answered that they are demons. The council immediately requested the blasphemer’s death. During a delay Valentine asked for, he impressed the emperor with the truth of Christian belief. Claudius was deeply touched, but when Rome’s governor said Valentine was a magician, Claudius feared a revolt by his people and passed the priest on to Asterius, a judge, to decide on his fate. While standing in front of the judge, Valentine performed a miracle. He made the judge’s blind daughter see again by praying and laying on of hands. Asterius and his family got baptized after that. But since their new Christian belief was counter to Roman religion, they were tortured and killed. Rome’s governor also decided to torture Valentine and behead him Feb. 14, 269. Before he was killed, many young people visited him in jail. Also, one jail guard’s daughter came to see him several times. She helped him to keep his spirits up and told him that he did the right thing by ignoring the emperor and going ahead with the secret

messages. On the day he was to die, he left a note thanking the girl for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it with “Love from your Valentine.” That might have started the custom of exchanging love messages Feb. 14. Valentine cards have a long tradition. Legend says that the Duke of Orleans, while in prison in the tower of London in 1415, kept sending love letters to his spouse, and not only on Feb. 14. Ever since, he is looked at as the founder of Valentine’s. In the 17th century, author Samuel Pepys from London, revived this tradition of writing a love letter to his wife Feb. 14. She was so thrilled about it and in turn gave him flowers. The British noble society took over the tradition of giving flowers and sending love notes soon after, and it was spread through England and France. In the 18th century, people in love started to send romantic greeting cards. In Germany, recognition of Valentine’s Day started in the 1950’s when American Soldiers brought the British tradition to Germany.

» Inherit the Wind: Don’t miss KMC Onstage’s production of this timeless, science vs. religion story! The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. This play is based on the evolution trials of the 1920s, but its central theme — the pursuit of intellectual freedom — is just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Evening performance dates: 7 p.m. March 23 to 24, and April 13, 14, 20 and 21; and 3 p.m. Sunday matinees March 25, and April 15 and 22. You found the perfect house for retirement in Germany. Now what?

By FindItGuideProperties.com Excerpts courtesy of German-American Community Office You have been searching for the perfect house for your retirement and you finally found it! It is just the right size for your new life after work and you are ready to pull the trigger on it. Before that next great leap, there are some things you will need to do. If you wish to retire in Germany and are no longer associated with the U.S. military, you will lose your SOFA status and consequently will become a tourist. A regular U.S. citizen can stay in Germany for 90 days without requiring a residence permit. You will fall under this category as soon as you retire. What you have to do is apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). If you live in the City of Kaiserslautern (city includes: Dansenberg, Einsiedlerhof, Erfenbach with Lampertsmühle and Stockborn, Erlenbach, Hohenecken with Espensteig, Mölschbach, Morlautern with Waldhof, and Siegelbach) then the office in Rathaus-Nord, Benzinoring 1, is the appropriate office for you. If you live in Kaiserslautern County (county includes: Bann, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, EnkenbachAlsenborn, Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Fischbach, Frankelbach, Frankenstein, Gerhardsbrunn, Hauptstuhl, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn/Pfalz, Hochspeyer, Hütschenhausen, Katzweiler, Kindsbach, Kollweiler, Kottweiler-Schwanden, Krickenbach,

If you are married and your spouse is not German, the above items are also required of your spouse. You will also need to submit a marriage certificate, regardless of your spouse’s nationality. It is advisable to start early on these things, however, as long as you have SOFA status, you cannot start this process. When you lose your status, you will be considered a U.S. tourist who just entered the country. After this, you can stay in Germany for 90 days without needing a status. Kaiserslautern City Administration or 0631-7105201/401 for the County Administration. Take the above items to the appropriate office. Your documents will be reviewed. There is no fixed time for the process. It can be a matter of two weeks or longer. Therefore, it is highly recommended you begin the process as soon as you lose your SOFA status. Usually, a residence permit must be renewed annually. Also, you will not receive German health benefits if you do not pay into the German health care system through employment. Therefore, you will only receive a residence permit if you already have your own health care. If you do end up working on the economy, you will then pay for German health insurance, which entitles you to receive German health benefits. There is no specific job you will need to acquire in order to stay in Germany. Most retirees have sufficient income through their pension.

Aaron, 12, was one of three winners randomly selected from more than 550 eligible entries. He said he plans to use the gift card to purchase a laptop to help with his schoolwork. Since moving to Kaiserslautern two years ago, Aaron has taken full advantage of living in the heart of Europe. Earlier this month, he traveled to the Swiss Alps for the Boy Scouts’ annual Klondike event, and recently traveled to Naples, Italy, for a Boy Scouts summer camp. “I like meeting new people and staying in new places,” Aaron said. Aaron’s father, Sgt. 1st Class Juan Perez, is an Army Reservist serving in the 7th Mission Support Command. He said the frequent moves of a military lifestyle have not always been to introduce your little one to music through specially created programs called Caterpillar Music classes and Music Together classes! Caterpillar Music classes for young children ages 2 to 3 offer a unique introduction to music with exciting themes, colorful instruments and amazing puppets. Music Together is a rich music and movement program for children age 4 to 6 that develops not only music skills, but also skills essential for a well-rounded education. It’s hard to leave behind those friends they’ve made in the past, but they’ve become very social and can make new ones easily.” Students and guardians can contact the KMCC Exchange at 063714079100 for more information about the You Made the Grade program. Peter Rabbit (PG)

The 15:17 to Paris (PG-13)

Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers, now takes on the starring role of his own irreverent, contemporary comedy with attitude. In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as they rival for the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover who lives next door (Rose Byrne). James Corden voices the character of Peter with playful spirit and wild charm, with Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daisy Ridley performing the voice roles of the triplets, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail. Starring: Rose Byrne, Sam Neill, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie

In the early evening of August 21, 2015, the world watched in stunned silence as the media reported a thwarted terrorist attack on Thalys train #9364 bound for Paris, an attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. The film follows the course of the friends’ lives, from the struggles of childhood through finding their footing in life, to the series of unlikely events leading up to the attack. Throughout the harrowing ordeal, their friendship never wavers, making it their greatest weapon and allowing them to save the lives of the more than 500 passengers on board. Starring: Jenna Fischer, Judy Greer, Lillian Solange Beaudoin, Bryce Gheisar, Jaleel White, Thomas Lennon

TODAY:

Raspberry Stracciatella Tiramisu

Ingredients (for 4 people)

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1½ cups raspberries, frozen or fresh 250 grams mascarpone 250 grams quark, low fat (buy this in any store on the economy) 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar A dash of salt 4 tablespoons Amaretto liqueur ½ cup dark chocolate chips chopped finely 12-14 sponge fingers 4 tablespoons cold expresso or strong black coffee Cocoa powder for dusting

Page 29

Preparation Mix mascarpone, quark, sugar, vanilla sugar, salt and 2 tablespoons of Amaretto. Add chocolate chips. Stir the thawed raspberries into the cream mixture. In a second bowl mix remaining Amaretto and coffee. In a small glass dish arrange half of the sponge fingers and pour half of the Amaretto and coffee mixture on top. Add half of the raspberry mixture to the dish. Repeat the layers again. Cover with a thin layer of cocoa powder. Prepare the Tiramisu the night before, giving the biscuits time to soak up the liquids, making it even tastier. Wait until right before serving to add the cocoa powder.

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com For a long time scientists have been saying that dogs don’t actually “love” their owners but that the bond is based on food and security. Even many dog behaviourists keep telling us to treat our dog like a dog because it can’t have human emotions. But these theories are being turned upside down with new research into how dog’s brains work. A research project is currently being undertaken in Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, by Gregory Berns, a neuroscientist, doing fMRI scans on dogs. Berns worked with a dog trainer to teach Callie, a nine-month-old rescue dog, and McKenzie, a three-year-old collie, to happily lie in a MRI machine without sedation, and said: “We can really begin to understand what a dog is thinking rather than infer it from their behaviour.” What Berns and his team have shown is, that a part of the brain associated with positive emotions, was similar in dogs and humans. These findings could indicate that dogs can empathise with human emotions and experience love and affection in a similar way to humans. “MRIs don’t prove that animals have emotions – we already know they do. But MRIs can show us how and where in the brain these emotions occur. And the closer we look, the more we see in common with our own brains.” Now that we know scientifically what we’ve

always known in our hearts… what is the best way to love your dog on Valentine’s day? Do Not buy him a big beautiful box of Valentine’s chocolates! Remember dogs can’t eat chocolate. Instead of that maybe see if you have a pet bakery nearby where you can pick up a special treat for your furry Valentine.

If your dog has a favourite place to walk, or park to play in, or river to paddle in, take him there for some special one-on-one time. Or take him along on a long hike to explore a place you’ve never been, or for a long scenic drive if he’s one of those dogs who goes crazy for a ride in the car.

As people we show affection with lots of hugs and kisses, but most dogs don’t really enjoy being hugged. They learn to tolerate it from their special person, and a few may come to like it. A better way to show affection physically is to gently stroke your dog as this is similar to the way they nuzzle and nudge each other. A gentle chest scratch and ear rub will also be enjoyed.

A pooch pamper session is another idea. Many dogs really enjoy being groomed. Just as they groom each other as a way of bonding, so you can strengthen your bond with an extra special grooming session.

Why not take your dog on a Valentine’s date?

If you don’t have any plans of your own for the evening, finish off the day with an extra-long play session, maybe with a new toy or teaching a new trick. Then just enjoy some quiet bonding time together. Put on your favourite movie, dig into your own lovely box of Valentine’s chokies, with your special dog curled up on the couch next to you, or resting contentedly at your feet. Your dog won’t know it’s all about Valentine’s Day, but he will be happy that you spoilt and loved him a bit extra for the day!

IDEAS TO SURPRISE YOUR LOVED ONE Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com It is almost that time of year again, love it or loathe it; Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. If you want to do something special for your loved one, we have plenty of tricks for you to stuff up your sleeve. It is not all about spending a lot of dough, you can demonstrate someone your love in lots of different ways that they will really appreciate. We’ve put together a few suggestions to get your ideas flowing, take a look! Breakfast In Bed It really is the little things that mean a lot, and what is better than breakfast in bed? This will put your partner in a great mood from the

start of the day; they will definitely get out of the right side of the bed. Why not be creative and make heart shaped pancakes of fried eggs with using a special cutter. Check out your local discount store for some cheap Valentine’s Day themed plates and glasses; they are guaranteed to put a smile on your lover’s face!

Post It Notes Why not make a really romantic gesture that is

a heart shape on the wall. We promise you that your partner’s heart will melt when they see all the thought and love that has gone into this gift. For a professional framing service visit The Frame Shop in Kaiserslautern. Whether you have been lovers since a school age, university or it is a newly sparked romance, it is always important to make that special effort on

sure to make your partner feel special by leaving sticky notes around the house. Write notes about your feelings and favorite things about your special person. Fill a page of sticky colorful notes with loads of romantic gestures and stick them in the fridge, wardrobe, on the walls, on the door handle. You can cut them in different shapes if you wish like a heart, circle, flower, etc. You’ve Been Framed The two of you probably have hundreds of couple photos taken and collected over the years. But where are they all, stored away on your desktop, Facebook or in the back of a shelf? They are probably just sitting around collecting dust. Well we reckon that it is time to do something about it. A framed photo can make such special gift for your significant other, or why not compile a photo album in chronological order of your time together? Another idea is printing different pictures of you together and forming

Valentine’s Day. If you have been with your partner for many years and have kids, it doesn’t mean you should feel less excited about this special day for lovers. Take a day off for yourselves – leave the kids in childcare for a day or with someone you trust and feel young again! Happy Valentine’s Day!
