SECAF, CSAF end overseas tour with visit to Ramstein by Airman 1st Class John Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Chief of Staff of the Air Force escorted the 25th Secretary of the Air Force on an overseas tour of military installations, where she immersed herself with the scope of missions supporting real world contingency, humanitarian and NATO alliance operations. Rounding off a multiday tour spanning the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein visited Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 22, where they received an overview of the installation, U.S.

Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, and the military missions conducted here. Located in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Ramstein coordinates and synchronizes efforts with joint and coalition partners in-theater to support the NATO alliance, while providing responsive airlift, airdrop and aeromedical capabilities to combatant commanders. Barrett said one common theme she noticed from each location she visited was the power and importance of alliances and partnerships. “Partnerships are what will make the difference in our ability to take the fight to the enemy and defend America See OVERSEAS TOUR, Page 2

Rheinland-Pfalz state secretary visits Ramstein Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Nicole Steingaß, Rheinland-Pfalz state secretary, visited Ramstein Air Base Nov. 20. Accompanying Steingaß were Carsten Göller, state coordinator for military affairs, and Udo Rzany, military affairs administrator. U.S. military installations in Germany, including Ramstein, adhere to German law. Many German officials operate on Ramstein, such as the veterinarians and federal police at the 721st Aerial Port Squadron Passenger Terminal

and the Sicherheitswache (German Polizei liaison) operating alongside the 86th Security Forces Squadron. As state secretary, Steingaß coordinates between the Rheinland-Pfalz officials and U.S. forces. Steingaß requested the visit, her first to Ramstein, to learn about the base firsthand and familiarize herself with some of Ramstein’s people, operations and capabilities. “For the partnership between the Rheinland-Pfalz region and the U.S. military, it’s important for me to come here and see things with my own eyes,” Steingaß said. “It’s

always different if you get a personal impression of things rather than just hear about it.” Steingaß met with Ramstein senior leadership, including Col. Brian Filler, U.S. Air Forces in Europe — Air Forces Africa deputy chief of staff, and Col. Robert Thompson, 86th Mission Support Group commander. Scott Lockard, 86th Airlift Wing vice director, guided Steingaß and accompanying officials on a tour through several stops on Ramstein, including a C-130J See VISIT, Page 3

Page 2 OVERSEAS TOUR from Page 1 and its interests,” Barrett said. “Making alliances and partnerships is an essential part of what we need to do, and we’re doing that, as I’ve just observed through my time traveling this past week.” While visiting Ramstein, Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing presented an array of capabilities to give the senior leaders a more in-depth perspective of the missions conducted within mainland Europe, as well as in Africa and the Middle East. The mission-specific presentations highlighted some of Ramstein’s latest technology and strategic capabilities, including en route patient staging, explosive ordnance disposal, deployable air traffic control and landing systems, and 3D printing. These mission requirements need regular investment

of modern tools, techniques and hardware to safely do the job Airmen are entrusted to do. This additionally requires first-rate training to be ready to face any challenge, as outlined in the National Defense Strategy. “Thoughtfully working to build readiness that gets the job done and focuses on the mission will implement the National Defense Strategy,” Barrett said. “We need to give our Airmen the tools they need … and that means modernizing – getting equipment in your hands, on time, so that you are ready to work.” After seeing various base units, Barrett and Goldfein’s next stops included visits to Headquarters USAFE – AFAFRICA, the 603rd Air and Space Operations Center and the Nuclear University Training Facility where the two received immersion briefings that highlighted day-to-day operations and initiatives within the major command.

One of the initiatives briefed was the Agile Combat Employment concept. ACE ensures USAFE-AFAFRICA is ready for potential contingencies with little notice by allowing forces to operate from locations with varying levels of capacity and support, ensuring Airmen and aircrews are postured to respond across the spectrum of military operations. They also discussed Operation GRIT, which is a commandwide resiliency program with a holistic approach to strengthen resiliency, reinforce protective factors and reduce unwanted behaviors through deliberate and meaningful personal and professional development from commanders and supervisors. During an all call, Barrett and Goldfein took time to answer Airmen’s questions. Correlating a key objective of developing leaders within today and tomorrow’s Air Force, Goldfein addressed sev-

December 6, 2019 eral concerns about retention. “The investment we’re making in inspirational, courageous and caring leaders at the squadron level – to me – is probably the most important retention work that we’re doing,” he said. Goldfein went on to explain that quality of service and making a career in the Air Force the richest experience possible are also key factors in retaining Airmen. He asked those serving today to consider the importance of the Air Force culture and the preservation of the American way of life. “If what motivates you is that you’re part of something much bigger than yourself, that when you put on this uniform you’re defending America back home, that the Airmen to your right and to your left are the most incredible people on the planet, and that you’re part of a highpowered team in your squadron, where the culture is such that you feel valued and you

are contributing – that’s our culture,” Goldfein said. This Air Force culture has proven to be a shining example of the American spirit. “It’s important for us to be represented favorably around the world, and that’s partly done and favorably done by our Air Force, everywhere,” Barrett said. “The capability, the competence, the leadership, the strength of character and integrity that the United States Airmen demonstrate, help us serve well to build friendships, alliances and partnerships that will last.” This heavy responsibility levied upon all service members is one which is not lost on Air Force leadership. “Someone has to stand between the sheep and the wolves,” Goldfein said. “Never take for granted the importance of your service in the military right now because evil exists and someone’s got to be the sheepdog. That’s you.”

Air Force rolls out new financial readiness training Story and graphic by Staff Sgt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “We know that experiencing financial hardships can be stressful for Airmen and their families,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. “Financial problems can adversely affect your ability to focus on your job, maintain your security clearance and ultimately perform your unit’s mission.” To ensure mission readiness, new financial readiness training requirements for Airmen went into effect Nov. 15. This new training prepares Airmen to be financially ready for a variety of situations. “Personal financial readiness education plays a vital role in enhancing the financial literacy and competency of service members and their families,” said Angelica Williams, 86th Force Support Squadron Airman & Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant. “As service members experience life changing events, it is imperative they are aware of how their visit from Page 1 Super Hercules aircraft, the 721st APS Passenger Terminal, and the Sicherheitswache. “I’m very impressed by what the base has to offer — by the infrastructure and by everything I’ve seen,” Steingaß said. “In addition, I’m very happy about receiving a warm welcome. Everyone was waiting with open arms.” There are many areas in the Rheinland-Pfalz where Germany and the U.S. military work together, and that’s why it’s important to have a good, strong partnership, whether that be in infrastructure, logistics, or elsewhere, Steingaß said. One way the Rhineland- Palatinate helps U.S. Forces is through the Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz Program, established by Roger Lewentz, minister of the interior and sports. The program is intended to help U.S. service members and their families integrate into German communities. The German-Amer ic an Community Office is an official partner to the Welcome to RheinlandPfalz Program. “Airmen have the capability of taking the training right from their desk through the CAC enabled MyVector site or schedule an appointment with the A&FRC for one-on-one training,” said Williams. Service members will be notified via email when they need to complete any financial training or pre-registering for training offered through

MyVector prior to receiving a notification. Service members will not be required to complete training for events and situations that occurred prior to Nov. 15. For more information contact the Ramstein A&FRC at 06371-47-5100 or 480-5100.

Airlifter of the Week: Port Dawg ‘Khan’ performs protocol mission Story and photos by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. John Khandzhayan, a protocol liaison for the 86th Airlift Wing, was recognized as the Airlifter of the Week on Nov. 19 at Ramstein Air Base. Airlifter of the Week is a wing-level award granted to 86th AW Airmen who exemplify the wing’s standards of excellence as the world’s best wing. Staff Sgt. “Khan,” as he commonly goes by, earned this distinguished title by proving to be a vital asset to the 86th AW for the past year while assigned as a protocol member. Khan’s exceptional job performance led to the success of 19 high-visibility events during July and August, including the organization of the Kaiserslautern Military Community’s USO celebrity tour, the 3rd Air Force command chief immersion tour, and fulfilling key advisor duties for multiple change-of-command, retirement, and promotion ceremonies. U.S. Air Force Col. Matt Husemann, 86th AW vice commander and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto

J. Rendon, 86th AW command chief, surprised Khan at his office to applaud him for his hard work. “What you do here every day for the men and women of this base and us is amazing,” Husemann said. “It’s just awesome to be able to come down here and recognize you as a phenomenal Airman, and the Airlifter of the Week.” Rendon, who has grown to know Khan personally through the nature of their positions and shared ‘port dawg’ heritage, cracked jokes with him throughout the celebration. After sharing laughs, Rendon went on to compliment Khan on his level of adaptability and seamlessness of performance. Khan, however, attributed his success to encouragement from his family. “I am grateful to have had an opportunity to be in the position I am in today,” Khan said. “I would not be here right now without the support of my wife and the opportunities the Air Force has provided me.” Khan’s Air Force expertise is as an air transportation specialist. He is currently wrapping up his 13-month special-duty assignment as a protocol Airman; once Khan finishes these

duties, he will return to his home at the 721st Aerial Port Squadron. Outside of his work life, Khan carves out time for his favorite hobbies, including making candles, traveling and working out. Khan and his wife, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Mariela Sanchez, an aircraft metals technician from the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, flew home to get mar-

ried in October of 2019 amidst their demanding jobs and crazy life together at Ramstein. Sanchez isn’t surprised by her husband’s recognition, as she has always been his biggest fan and most prominent supporter. “Don’t let his good looks fool you, my husband is beauty and brains,” Sanchez said.

1st CFC fair in Europe hosted on Ramstein Story and photo by Senior Airman Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern Military Community members participated in the first Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas fair in Europe on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 15. Nine charities run by local contacts gathered in Hangar 3 to increase exposure of their causes. The CFC promotes and supports philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and provides federal employees the opportunity to improve the

quality of life for all. The CFC is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the United States and overseas raising millions of dollars each year. Although many people are aware of the CFC and donate on an annual basis, the fair was the first time Kaiserslautern Military Community members could gather in one location to speak with multiple charity representatives directly. Organizers of the event hope to continue hosting fairs in the future.

“The biggest things were reaching out to the charities, establishing those relations and helping to educate them on their function within the CFC and how they can register for charity events like this next year,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. James Earley, CFC-O fair organizer. So far, service members who donated to this year’s CFC-O have pledged $608,000 and nearly 500 volunteer hours. Individuals who wish to donate to this year’s CFC-O have until Dec. 14 to donate in person or until Jan. 11 if they wish to donate online.

INFORMATION ON BENEFICIARY WEB ENROLLMENT by Mark Ellis Defense Health Agency Problem Statement: The Beneficiary Web Enrollment (BWE) functionality is not working properly for those requesting an Open Season change in their existing TRICARE coverage. Who/When: Affects all TRICARE Prime or Select eligible beneficiaries wishing to make a change in their current TRICARE coverage effective Jan. 1, 2020, during the current open season period (Nov. 11 – Dec. 9). It does NOT affect those wishing to enroll for the first time or for those electing to enroll in TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select based on a qualifying life event (QLE). What: The Beneficiary Web Enrollment (BWE) functionality is not working properly for those requesting an Open Season change in their TRICARE coverage. While the system does allow them to change their TRICARE coverage effective Jan. 1, 2020, it creates a gap in their current coverage by disenrolling them from the existing coverage on a date other than Dec. 31. DHA validated with DMDC that the issue involves the BWE coding, and that for those wishing to make a change to their existing TRICARE coverage, they should call their regional contractor versus using BWE. The following message is posted on TRICARE.mil and the BWE page in milConnect:

Tall.

“Beneficiary Web Enrollment (BWE) is currently experiencing a technical issue. If you would like to change your TRICARE Prime Option or TRICARE Select plans during Open Season: 1. Call your regional contractor • Health Net Federal Services (TRICARE West): 1-844-8669378 • Humana Military (TRICARE East): 1-800-444-5445 • (Overseas) visit TRICAREoverseas.com/contact-us 2. Download • fill out and mail enrollment form at https://www.tricare.mil/forms” DMDC will conduct a “sweep” of all BWE “change of enrolled plan” transactions initiated during the TRICARE Open Season, which will “reconnect” the enrollment histories so there is no gap in their TRICARE coverages during Nov. or Dec. THP has asked for additional details, including timing of the sweeps. Where: BWE is deployed on DMDC’s milConnect webpages at https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect. Why: This issue was previously identified during the 2018 TRICARE Open Season. After the end of the 2018 Open Season, THP partnered with DMDC to identify new requirements to fix the issue. THP was under the impression that the problem with the effective disenrollment date (Dec. 31) was fixed prior to the start of this year’s Open Season. However, per DMDC, the fix is currently unfunded.

After the Open Season ends, THP plans to meet with OPM and their FEHBP and FEVIP contractors to review their online eligibility and enrollment capabilities and associated techni-

cal design documents. THP will then re-draft DHA’s online eligibility and enrollment portal requirements that either can be met by DMDC or put out for bid by web tool design contactors.”

Garrison director wins prestigious IMCOM Stalwart Award by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command A U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz director received Installation Management Command's most prestigious award during a ceremony Nov. 19 in San Antonio, Texas. Stefan Alford, chief of public affairs, was one of 15 people selected from garrisons worldwide for the 2019 IMCOM Stalwart Award. “The professionals [we] recognize today have demonstrated a passionate commitment to their role within IMCOM and the Army,” said Maj. Gen. Timothy McGuire, acting commanding general for IMCOM. “They have done what it takes to get the job done, and they have set a new, higher standard for service to others.” The Stalwart Award is given to employees who distinguish themselves from their peers and leaders as outstanding IMCOM civilians and exceed the call of duty to achieve Army and IMCOM objectives. According to Dr. Kevin Griess, USAG RP deputy garrison commander, Alford “passed that bar tenfold.” “Stefan, every single day, in everything he does, sets the bar for what Installation Management looks like - which is a dedication to community, a dedication to customer service, high levels of team play, and just a good, solid character as a

person and as a professional,” Griess said. Garrison leaders lauded Alford's achievements and said in the nomination package “his level of commitment to Host Nation relationships and pursuit of excellence within IMCOM's Service Culture Campaign have been unprecedented.” Alford guided the garrison commander in Host Nation community relations through the development of a new analytical tool, and execution of events focused on increasing trust, coordination, and partnership between the command and the Host Nation. IMCOM-Europe recognized Alford's work as a best practice. Alford supported the IMCOM Service Culture Campaign by creating a weekly Service Culture Spotlight

to recognize garrison workforce members for outstanding contributions and exceptional customer service. In addition, Alford developed a virtual service longevity recognition wall to highlight employees with 40 or more years of service on the garrison's website. Also of note were Alford's efforts to obtain customer feedback that aided senior leaders in identifying shortfalls and gaps between customer expectations and garrison service delivery. Through the use of outreach surveys and new digital communication methods such as livestreamed town halls, Alford's “proactive nature enabled the command team to take action,” garrison leaders said. Alford, an Air Force veteran with 25 years of military experience in the public affairs career field and four years

as an IMCOM professional, said there are no individual awards in this business — it's always a team effort. “Without the outstanding individuals around me and everything we've achieved together, I wouldn't be representing the garrison and the region. That said, I'm proud that this is a positive reflection on all of the things the garrison does across the spectrum of taking care of people,” he said. Alford empowers his team daily to innovate and develop new ways to effectively execute the public affairs mission. Under his leadership, USAG RP Public Affairs staff won garrison-, IMCOM- and Department of Armylevel awards and Commander's Coins. Alford said, “simply put, leadership means taking care of the team.” Echoing sentiments from the garrison, IMCOM-Europe Director Tommy Mize endorsed Alford's nomination on behalf of the Europe region. “As a professional communicator, Stefan embraces new and innovative ways to message the Army and Installation Management Command story,” Mize said. “Also known as a leader throughout the public affairs community, his peers rightfully recognize him as being the go-to public affairs officer for advice. When things get difficult, people rely on leadership to help them with tough times. Stefan is that type of leader.”

USAG RP housing survey ends; helps residents build wish list, solve issues by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz The feedback from a survey reaching nearly 600 Baumholder Military Community residents is being used to create a list of desires and wants for housing areas. Not to be confused with the ongoing Army-wide email housing survey, the USAG RP survey opened the first week of November and wrapped up Nov. 9. “We had about 32 people in yellow vests at different places in the Baumholder Military Community,” said Henry Kaaihue, USAG RP operations officer, whose office is overseeing the survey. Their survey solicitation locations included the AAFES Shopette, food court, the post office, commissary, bowling alley, fitness centers, dining facilities and other high-traffic areas. Kaaihue said of the 582 people contacted, 242 were Army family housing residents and 246 respondents were from unaccompanied Soldiers living in barracks. Some 122 people did not partici-

pate in the survey for various reasons. “Most people, when they’re approached in public seem a little bit reluctant,” said John O’Brien, USAG RP Plans, Analysis and Integration Office. “As soon as they realized what the topic was, they became very enthusiastic to answer the questions.” Residents were asked to rate their desired modifications on a scale from 1 to 6, with 6 being the most desired. The survey was designed to ask residents what modifications they think would make BMC Housing more livable. “Between housing and barracks, the consensus was air conditioning number one, larger washers and dryers number two, and number three was a tie between more parking spaces and the German rolling shutters,” Kaaihue said The survey also asked what they would put in a “miscellaneous category.” Answers topping that list included, “faster response to work orders,” and “better response from the work order phone number.” Kaaihue and O’Brien both were

excited for the results and complimented garrison employees tasked with taking the surveys. “Getting nearly 600 people, that’s almost half the population of our Army Family Housing and our barracks,” he said. As one survey wraps up, another continues. The Army-wide housing survey rolls on through Dec. 12 and leaders are asking for the same turnout as

occurred with the local version. Residents should have received an email from armyhousingsurvey@celassociates.com. Meanwhile, Kaaihue and O’Brien’s task now is to take what they’ve been given and turn that into action. “We’re happy with the number of people we talked to and we’re very happy with the suggestions made,” Kaaihue concluded. “Nothing will happen overnight, but now we have a direction to go.”

Carr thanks ‘Team 21’ in change of responsibility by Pvt. Katelyn Myers 21st Theater Sustainment Command U.S. Army Europe’s logistical command changed senior enlisted leaders during a change of responsibility ceremony at Sembach Kaserne in Sembach, Nov. 21. 21st Theater Sustainment Command bid farewell to Command Sgt. Maj. Rocky L. Carr who assumed responsibility May 18, 2018, as the 21st TSC senior enlisted leader. “18 short months ago I stood up here assuming responsibility as the 17th 21st TSC Command Sgt. Maj. and spoke about the opportunity to answer what I believe to be one of the most important calls a noncommissioned officer can have: to serve the Soldiers, civilians and families of our great Army,” Carr said. “That has been my mission and driving force during my time here.” Carr explained how he was proud to serve in Europe and believes these assignments create better Soldiers. “What makes living and working here in Europe so special as a Soldier is that there is not a lot of simulation; we operate and collaborate with our allies and partners, daily, on the roads, in the ports

and everywhere in between across the continent, just as we would for our wartime mission,” he said. “It is my belief that the Soldiers and civilians stationed over here, get the reps and build necessary experience by placing them in positions of responsibility during daily missions, training exercises, and deployments, that when they are assigned or return to [U.S. Forces Command] units, they are better positioned to succeed and develop.” Carr lastly thanked all of Team 21 for their dedication and hard work during his time as the senior enlisted leader. “You are a terrific team that handles everything and left it all on the field for me,” Carr said. “You did everything I asked and more — with good grace, good humor, professional competence and maturity beyond your years.” Maj. Gen. Christopher O. Mohan, 21st TSC commanding general, expressed the personal impact Carr had as a fantastic command partner. “Rocky, personally, you were a fantastic compliment as a command partner,” he said. “You were my second set of eyes and an expert sounding board. This command does not run without its outstanding noncommissioned officers and that standard was set extraordinarily

high by Sergeants Major like you.” Mohan communicated that the command does not run without its outstanding NCOs and welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Sean M. Howard to the 21st TSC team and charged him to be ready. “The responsibility of this command now shifts to Command Sergeant Major Sean M. Howard,” Mohan said. “Command Sgt. Maj. Howard is one of our Army’s finest warrior leaders. He has an incredible reputation and a remarkable breadth of tactical, operational, and strategic experiences across our Army.” “I look forward to working with you — partners in Mission Command — and Mission Command is the operative word — very important,” Mohan continued. “So if you’re ready, let’s get to work.” Howard thanked Mohan and Carr for both the opportunity to serve as the 18th 21st TSC command sergeant major and the first class reception. “Maj. Gen. Mohan … I look forward to working alongside you, and know and understand the importance and significance of the role and responsibility I’m about to embark on,” he said. “I will not fail you, sir. “Command Sgt. German firefighters deploy to help keep Italian military housing area safe by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz A recent fix to a water tower in a military housing area in Italy led to a month-long partnership between U.S. Army garrisons in Germany and Italy. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz deployed three firefighters to U.S. Army Garrison Italy Sept. 9-Oct. 9 after the Vicenza-based post started repair on a water tower in its Villaggio Housing Area. The tower generates approximately 70 percent of the water flow for the fire hydrants and fire suppression systems there. “USAG Italy does not contain any assets within the garrison that could be utilized, so we reached back to [Installation Management Command-Europe] for a fire tender and three personnel to support the 30-day mission,” said U.S. Army Col. Daniel J. Vogel, commander of USAG Italy. Italy’s ‘reach back’ paid off. Rheinland-Pfalz sent a fire tender truck and three Sembach-based local national firefighters: Ulf Burger, Markus Rademacher, and Stephan Uhrig, who were excited about the challenge.

“[I wanted to] become more experienced, see another garrison and see how the American and Italian firefighters work,” said Uhrig. “This was a good chance as a local national to see more of the system and not just the fire station on our installation.” USAG Italy’s Fire Chief Jeff Hawkins said the three visiting firefighters hit the ground running. “This team of professionals assimilated as seamlessly as I ever witnessed. They became one team, one mission, one goal.”

In the 30 days, they responded to 52 emergency calls, participated in or led more than 47 hours of training, and helped with six large public education events connecting with more than 2,000 base personnel. When discussing accepting the deployment, Burger said he could not pass up the experience, adding, “They are great firefighters down there, and they do a great job.” Rademacher echoed his colleague’s words. “It was a great experience to meet new people and [observe] anoth-

er system in another country. The system was a bit different, and it was interesting to see.” USAG RP Fire Chief Marsh Fiedler said he was proud of the trio’s work and his team’s ability to deploy when needed. “It was a good opportunity for them to see another firefighting organization, train with the Italian and American firefighters, and learn different rescue and firefighting techniques,” Fiedler said. “They bring new ideas or different methods back to our garrison, and share with the other firefighters here. Overall, the task was a good experience.” “Their actions alone reflect great credit on their department for sending the best to help the USAG-I team,” Vogel said. “They did such a good job while here that a couple of the Italian firefighters suggested they should be considered as our Firefighter of the Quarter. That says a lot.” Fiedler said the deployment is an example of his entire team’s capability and willingness to serve. “They do great work taking care of our people, they’re committed to the mission, and they’re excited to step up and support whenever needed.”

New sponsorship training hopes to make Germany PCS ‘sehr gut’ The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Plans, Analysis and Integration Office implements a new program to make the move to Germany easier for garrison employees and their families. The PAIO has created a specialized Workforce Development team, titled “Task Force 5” to design and instruct a Sponsorship Training 2.0 class for sponsors and supervisors. The first class was Nov. 14 at Kleber Kaserne, Building 3213, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

“Quality sponsorship is paramount to the integration of soldiers and families, particularly first term soldiers - sponsor must be a priority,” said Col. Jason Edwards, USAG RP commander. “We have the best garrison, with the best employees and we want to make sure they are set up for success when they arrive and take advantage of our amazing recources!” “It sets the tone as to what they can expect as an employee within the garrison,” agreed John O’Brien, PAIO chief. “There is sponsorship training right now, but we’re trying to take it to a new level. Some examples of

topics to be covered include not just sponsorship expectations but also subject matter areas intended to inform sponsors in areas that are valuable for professional development, which enable the employee to experience heightened levels of future AMC/IMCOM organization success. The idea is to holistically support all employees in their integration, acculturation and personal/professional development. We want to foster a genuine environment which supports people in their career goals, while meeting Installation Management needs.” Creating more informed sponsors across a wide spectrum of topic areas is intended to help foster an environment where employees know they are valued.

Josh Parm, right, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Plans, Analysis and Integration Office training instructor, goes over the agenda for the garrison Sponsorship Training 2.0 Nov. 14 on Kleber Kaserne in Kaiserslautern.

“We want a consistent baseline of knowledge throughout every sponsor,” said Josh Parm, Task Force 5 training instructor. “That way, we’re putting out the same information throughout the garrison so everyone can use the same information the same way.” The class is designed for anyone who could potentially be a

sponsor and supervisors of new employees from all organizations within the garrison. The class will feature a mixture of PowerPoint and handson training in a classroom environment. The intensive class is interactive and will allow the sponsors-to-be able to go to web sites and ask questions. That way, O’Brien said, “Sponsors have at least a minimal level of knowledge so they can answer a new employee’s question. The key is consistent quality informed sponsors. We’ve found that, all too often, people are asked a question and the answer is, ‘You need to go ask so-and-so,’” O’Brien continued. “We, along with garrison directors, have outlined what we think are need-to-have, as well as, nice-to-have topic areas. The combination of those lists have made it possible for us to create the first version of the class we provided Nov. 14.” The hope is to help shape the culture of the garrison even before a new employee or family sets foot on German soil, according to O’Brien. “Germany is such a unique place to come to,” Parm said. “We need to help them understand how to get through the process as easy as possible so they can enjoy their time here.” Those wanting to attend should the next class should contact Josh Parm at joshua.e.parm.naf@mail.mil. Holidays are near, three candles left on Advent wreath by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “Advent, Advent a little light is burning. First one, then two, then three, then four, then the Christ Child is at the door.” Germans of all ages know these words inside and out. The Advent season is celebrated the four Sundays before Christmas. What does Advent mean and what does it have to do with Christmas? The word Advent stems from the latin word “adventus” and translates into “arrival,” which refers to the arrival and birth of Jesus Christ. The Advent season was introduced by the Romans

about 500 years after the birth of Christ. They used the time to prepare for Christmas. Even today, Christians see the Advent season as a wait time to prepare for Christmas. Traditionally, the Advent wreath and the Advent calendar are part of the Christmas Eve tradition, which has been in existence for about 250 years. The Advent wreath is usually a ring braided from fir, which is decorated with four candles and Christmas decorations. On every Advent Sunday, another candle is lit, so that on the fourth Advent Sunday all candles are lit. Johann Wichern founded

the tradition of the wreath in 1839. Wichern led an orphanage in Hamburg, and wanted to show the children how many days and weeks until Christmas. He took a large wooden wheel of an old carriage and placed 28 candles on it, 24 were small red candles and four were bigger white candles. He then hung the wreath up in the orphanage. The red candles symbolized working days and the white ones Advent Sundays. Today, the Advent wreath only contains four candles. As they grew in popularity, families wanted to have these wreaths in their homes. However, it was often difficult to find room for

a large wheel with 28 candles. Therefore the size of the wreath and the number of candles had to shrink. Many countries have adopted this beautiful tradition. Along with the Advent wreath tradition, children hang up an Advent calendar, filled with chocolate and small toys. Another reason for the Advent calendar’s growing popularity had to do with creating a sense of excitement. It was created to make time until Christmas Eve pass faster for children. Parents came up with different options to highlight the special and festive season. Since the first beginnings

in the 19th century, individual advent calendars have been created with passion. It is no longer just children who receive Advent calendars, adults also receive them. In the 1930’s, the Advent calendar began to spread worldwide to places like Britain and the United States. Millions of Advent calendars are now produced in Germany, more than half go abroad. Though its shape and appearance have changed over the years, the mission of the Advent calendar remains the same: to express the uniqueness of the Christmas season and to build anticipation for Christmas Eve. Happy Holidays.

Saarbruecken hosts Christmas market, flying Santa by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Saarbruecken opened its “Christkindlmarkt,” Christmas market, Nov. 25, at St. Johanner Markt and Bahnhofstrasse. A historic ambiance and Christmas anticipation invites visitors to view approximately 80 market booths, and a children’s program. Eye-catchers include the nine-meter high Christmas pyramid and a small Ferris wheel. Fifteen thousand lights illuminate the market in a festive atmosphere. The bell tower, alpine hut and gingerbread house are just a few attractions that make the Christmas market an ideal place to bring family.

Another attraction is the large wine barrel booths where visitors can enjoy Gluehwein with friends and family. To reserve a wine barrel contact the alpine hut. Due to Saarbruecken’s location, it combines various tastes and delicacies from France and Germany. Specialties include chocolate covered fruits, sausages and the Saarland dish, “Dibbelabbes,” an oven-baked hash, made from grated raw

potatoes, bacon and leek, served with apple sauce. Another special attraction is Santa Claus, in his reindeer sleigh, accompanied by a Christmas angel in a cloud floating over the market. From an airy height, he tells the story of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer to young and old. Story time is daily at 5 and 7 p.m., Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Dec. 7 at 9 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 6 p.m.

INTRODUCING:

TEXMEX FRESH & FAST

New fresh and fast TexMex restaurant in Landstuhl — a concept that you have been waiting for! This restaurant just opened on November 12, 2019 and stands out from the other Mexican restaurants in the area, as they focus on serving the dishes you love, but without the long waiting time. This is the perfect place to have a fast but fresh meal during your lunch break or you can stop by after work to quickly grab dinner and take it home. The owner has over 25 years of restaurant experience and surely has taken his customers’ feedback into consideration. His inspiration also comes from places you can find in San Antonio and he’s adapted the concept of having a large window you walk up to and place your order with the chef chopping and sizzling away right there — kind of a food truck vibe — with fewer menu options to keep it simple and offer good quality food with fresh ingredients at affordable prices. “Few” might even be an understatement, as you can easily find more than 15 dishes and desserts on the menu. It’s set up as a meal including a large soft drink or homemade iced tea for only € 8.50; you can also ask for a smaller portion for children. If you have time to sit down and eat, there is enough room to fit 35 people; you can flip through the menu and will be waited on at the table. Enjoy

complimentary chips and salsa while you are deciding whether to get the flautas, crunchy or soft tacos, loaded nachos, enchiladas, fajitas, ribs or wings, quesadillas, nachos, Mexican pizza and salads or choose to build your own burrito. TexMex Fresh & Fast has a convenient location near the McDonald’s in Landstuhl. There is plenty of free parking in front of the building and they are open every day, even on German and American holidays. Right now only cash payment is available. However, there is an ATM across the street. Soldier Special: When in uniform: Order your food in advance, make out a pickup time, then pull up in your car to receive your order and pay without leaving your car! Prices and content subject to change. Opening hours: Every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Address: TexMex Fresh & Fast Raiffeisen Str. 2A, 66849 Landstuhl Facebook: texmexfreshandfast Website: www.texmexfresh.com (currently under construction) Phone: 06371 9188208 or 0151 66327612

ROYAL AROMA

INDIAN RESTAURANT

If you are more into Indian food, then check out the Royal Aroma Indian Restaurant in the Hohenecken part of Kaiserslautern, right next to Vogelweh. The Royal Aroma has been open for three years now and serves a mixture of dishes from North and South India, as well as from Sri Lanka. Their goal is to provide an authentic taste of India and their motto is “Eat healthy, stay healthy!”. The Indian diet includes a wide variety of spices, pulses and rice, not to mention its colors which keep the cuisine vibrant, interesting and healthy. On the menu you’ll find all the typical dishes you know, like Chicken Tikka, Tandoori Chicken, Mango or Butter Chicken and more, also with lamb meat or vegetarian options and even vegan or gluten free — if that’s your preference. Of course, you can’t forget the obligatory fresh Naan bread as an appetizer or to dunk in your sauce of your main course. If you prefer to change things up a bit, then try their “fusion food” which is a pizza or taco with an Indian twist. And if you still feel like hanging out afterwards, there are plenty of cocktails to choose from, too. The Royal Aroma can seat up to 100 people and they are well experienced at hosting your holiday parties or gatherings for any other occasion, either buffet style or à-la-carte. Talk to the restaurant staff in advance to see what they can do for you. Feel like trying a variety of dishes at once? Then check out their special

all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner buffet with more than 20 items on the last Saturday and Sunday of every month. Be sure to make reservations. Lunch Special: Traditional Indian Thali Small € 7.90 or large € 12.90 Tuesday — Sunday 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Special Lunch & Dinner Buffet: Last Saturday & Sunday of every month: 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. € 15 all-you-can-eat; drinks not included.
