The summer sun beat down upon the grass field at Powidz Air Base, Poland; the neverending waves of scorching heat could have mummified anyone foolhardy enough to soak in the sunlight beneath

the empty, cloudless sky. But there was a motley crew who might have been willing to do just that: five Airmen sped down the sea of grass in their blue-gray van, galloping over the hills and bumping along the way. “You think it’s gonna be just as hot today like it was yesterday?” the driver asked his partner in the passenger seat.

“They say it’s supposed to be even hotter today,” responded the other. “Hope you brought lots of water.” The Airmen hail from the 435th Contingency Response Group on Ramstein Air Base. They were in Poland to support a bilateral exercise between the U.S. and Polish air forces. The crew’s mission was to

establish zones where aircraft can drop supply packages and make dirt landings. While each member of the crew has his own specialty and trade, they worked together to make the mission possible. They were also coming out to support Polish air force troops establishing their own landing operations. “What we’re doing out here right now is verifying a site we previously surveyed,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt.

Th e men and women of the 86th Airlift Wing welcomed their new commander, Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, Aug. 9. Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr. relinquished his command to August in a ceremony at the dual bay hangar. Reflecting on his time in command, Moore noted that creating command legacies is not about individuals, but teams of Airmen working together. “No individual commander in an organization this size leaves an individual legacy,” said Moore. “Commanders are part of the ongoing set of initiatives and priorities and responsibilities that started before we got here and carry on long after.” Moore cited several examSee NEW COMMANDER, Page 2

We have here a plot of land approximately seven thousand feet long and 180 feet wide; theoretically we could cut it up into several different LZs. “We truly are the first ones in and we stay until the case is established,” he continued, See LANDING ZONE, Page 6

Fantastic Airmen and commanders work together to move the mission forward, he said. “They knew they had the tools to accomplish what needed to get done, and they made it happen,” said Moore. “I’m proud to have spent a small amount of time here, and to have spent a small amount of time with each of you.” Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, Third Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony. Clark noted Ramstein and the 86th’s legacy and proud heritage. “This is no time for ease and comfort. It is time to dare and endure,” said Clark, citing Winston Churchill. “As you continue to execute and enable critical missions in some of the most challenging locations this world has to offer, hang on to that enduring courage, because it is you, the 86th Airlift Wing, like the generations before you, who must dare

and endure each and every day to ensure that freedom reigns throughout the world.” Family is essential to success, said Clark, and the Air Force found the perfect team to carry on the legacy of the wing. “We all know this wasn’t a stroke of luck because you were handpicked as exactly the right person for this job at exactly the right time,” said Clark. In their previous wing command at Yokota Air Base, Japan, August and his wife, Cristen, received the 2014 General and Mrs. Jerome F. O’Malley Award for the wing commander and spouse whose contributions to the nation, Air Force and local community best exemplify the highest ideals and positive leadership of a military couple in key positions. As the commander of the 86th, August leads a wing composed of seven groups and 31 squadrons across four bases in Germany, Spain, Belgium and Portugal. The 86th conducts U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s only airlift, airdrop and aeromedi-

cal evacuation flying operations, as well as providing rapid mobility and expeditionary combat support for military operations.

August expressed gratitude for the chance to come back to Ramstein a third time, having previously served as commander of the 37th Airlift Squadron from 2008 to 2010, and as the 37th’s Chief Pilot Scheduler from 1995 to 1998. He noted the importance of community partners in making the base’s mission so successful. “We would not be here without the support of our local community,” August said. “I’ve been at Ramstein enough times to know that this base is what it is due to your friendship and partnership. We look forward to continuing that partnership and most importantly, enhancing our friendship.” August noted the team assembled in formation today would continue its great legacy — and its motto — of enduring courage. “Commanding the world’s best wing is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said August. “Together, we will take the wing to new heights, we’ll bring it to new opportunities, and we look forward to what the future brings.”

Get ready for the 71st Air Force Ball by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Air Base is slated to host an Air Force ball in observance of the Air Force’s 71st birthday on Sept. 22. Scheduled to be held in building 2018 on Ramstein, attendees can expect a fresh take on an honored Air Force tradition. “Starting from the beginning, our goal was to do something different, new, and exciting,” said Capt. Matthew Baldwin, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron flight nurse instructor and Ramstein Air Force Ball committee member. “The theme for the ball is going to be, ‘Into the future,’ and our slogan is ‘Celebrating today, innovating for tomorrow.’” Electronic invites were released Aug. 13, detailing pricing and how to acquire tickets for the event. Attendees’ RSVPs are required no later than Sept. 13. Promoting joint interoperability, members of the Ramstein Air Force Ball committee are extending the evening’s invitation to all military personnel assigned to units within the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

A stanza in the Airman’s Creed reads, “I am an American Airman. My mission is to fly, fight, and win. I am faithful to a proud heritage, a tradition of honor, and a legacy of valor.” The Air Force Ball is a celebration of that heritage, tradition, and legacy. “It’s celebrating everything that’s been given to us by those who came

before us,” said Baldwin. “While we are celebrating the beginning of the Air Force, we’re also celebrating today, and were highlighting innovations and what’s to come for Ramstein.” Baldwin continued, saying if anyone has things they would like to see at this Air Force Ball or things they

Remember these bus safety dos and don’ts Meeting children at the bus stop, parents: DO … • Wait on the same side of the street as the bus stop. • Go to your child at the bus stop.

DO NOT … • • • •

Wait in a parked car or in a building. Wait across the street from the bus stop. Allow your child to come to you. Board the bus without proper authority (only registered students, bus driver, security attendant and school officials are authorized to board a school bus). Bottom line: When you meet your child at the bus stop, please take charge of the situation. As the adult, you can reduce the risk to your child and control the danger.

Danger Zones: Educate your child on the danger zones as shown on the picture. We ask that you and your child take extra precautions when near a school bus.

Teach them to never cross in front of or behind a bus. Reinforce to your child that traffic in Europe does not stop for loading and unloading of school buses. Stress good behavior on the bus — good behavior and safety go hand-in-hand. On or around buses, students must conduct themselves in accordance with the following school bus rules:

DODEA behavior standards for students: • Obey the driver or adult. • Enter and exit the bus safely, and always show your bus pass. • Stay properly seated and use seat belts when available. • Keep your hands, feet, and other body parts to yourself. • Do not throw things. • Put nothing out the window. • Remain quiet and do not disturb the driver or others. • No profanity, indecency, smoking, prohibited items or vandalism. • Do not eat, drink or chew gum. • Be responsible and be safe.

Five basic safety rules for riding the bus: • Be on time. Walk, do not run, to the bus stop. • When waiting for the bus, take at least three large steps away from the curb. • Take your seat on the bus and stay in it while the bus is moving. If there are seat belts, buckle up. • When getting off the bus, take three large steps away from the curb and wait for the bus to depart before crossing the street.

have seen at a previous Air Force Ball, the committee is still open to suggestions. He said this isn’t the Air Force committee’s ball; this is Ramstein’s Air Force Ball, and the team wants to be as inclusive as possible. Idea submissions can be submitted to Capt. Matthew Baldwin via email at matthew.baldwin.3@us.af.mil. • Never cross the street in front or behind the bus. Ensure children know and use the safest route possible from home to and from the bus stop. Teach children how to safely cross the street and use pedestrian crosswalks and trafficlighted intersections, where available. Students must present his/her bus pass to the driver while boarding the bus. Ensure children wear clothing that is easily visible to motorists. You greatly improve the children’s visibility when you put reflective tape or devices on your children’s outerwear, book bags or other carried items.

ed their ability to quickly process, deploy and set up facilities, equipment and vehicles as part of the European Contingency Air Operations Sets in a location where little or no infrastructure exists. “Having the Deployable Air Base System capability allows for a rapid, flexible response to any type of contingency that the Air Force in Europe would need to respond to and in any location within the area of responsibility,” said Capt. Alex John, logistics readiness officer for U.S. Air Forces in Europe. There are currently no DABS kits in the U.S. Air Force inventory. Procurement for the kits began in fiscal year 2018, and multiple DABS kits will be purchased and stored throughout Europe over the next several years. “What we’re trying to do is buy enough sets that when you look 360 degrees from wherever the threat might come in Europe, that we can easily set up base operations to generate sorties,” said Brig. Gen. Roy Agustin, director of logistics, engineering, and force protection, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa. DABS packages will include facilities, equipment, vehicles, and health service support. They will allow the Air Force to have valuable equipment on location to support USAFE operations, actions, and activities. “Deployable Air Base Systems enhance pre-positioned equipment right here in theater and cuts the amount of airlift you would need to

LANDING ZONE from Page 1 whacking away at a stowaway wasp with a plastic bottle. “The LZ or DZ is the first thing that goes up, and then you get your combat communications.” Music was blaring on the stereo, the air conditioning was on full blast, and the crew was enjoying the ride. They were comfortable— for now. The Airmen parked their van next to the Polish LZ crew they were helping and exited the comfort of their van. The two groups talked a little bit and got acquainted. “Well, let us know if you guys need anything,” Combs said to his Polish friends. Then turning to his crew he said, “We’ll get started on the site survey once these guys finish up.” The LZ crew would be waiting for a while. A Polish C-295 aircraft approached, and performed what seemed to be an endless repetition of touch-and-go landings, low passes, and dirt landings — leaving a cloud of dust with each pass. “It sure is hot out here,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joshua Todd, a weather Airman who is certified on DZ operations. He poured some water onto his hair, and rubbed his face with the waterfalls running down his forehead. There could be a lot of waiting on the LZ. This opens up plenty of time to tell stories, crack jokes, and play games. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joshua McIntosh, an air traffic controller, was a paradox — eating healthy and loving to work out, but also enjoying tobacco. “We can play Thor’s Hammer,”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Matthew Montgomery, front, and Tech. Sgt. Laramie Combs, both 435th Contingency Response Group contingency response air field managers, measure the distance at a landing zone on Powidz Air Base, Poland, Aug. 1. Contingency response airfield managers use a variety of tools to establish landing and drop zones in austere environments.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Laramie Combs, 435th Contingency Response Group contingency response airfield manager, prepares panels for a dirt runway as a Polish aircraft lands on Powidz Air Base, Poland, Aug. 1. Contingency response airfield managers form a small part of the wider Air Force airfield management career field. These Airmen are responsible for establishing landing and drop zones in unimproved environments all across Europe and Africa.

McIntosh said. “Shove a knife into the dirt and throw hammers at it. First one to knock the knife over wins.” McIntosh’s task was to visually scan the area to ensure the landing zone was safe for aircraft operations, coordinate with the local air traffic control tower for airspace deconfliction, and issue clearances to aircraft for approaches and departures. After what seemed like ages in limbo, the C-295 completed its passes and the Polish LZ crew rolled out. “Alright, let’s get started,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. David Anderson, a contingency response engineering supervisor. He was also the driver of the van. “It’s time to drop the hammer!” he said, and opened the back door of the van to retrieve what looked like a long stainless steel pole with a gigantic metallic weight which slid up and down the pole. “This is a dynamic cone penetrometer,” Anderson continued. “It measures the potential bearing capacity of the ground. This is one of the first steps in preparing an LZ.” “The ground can be deceitful,” Combs added. “Soil can be rock-hard on top, but soft a few inches below. It can also be the other way around. I set up an LZ in the desert one time, and when the plane touched down, the ground beneath it just turned into moon dust. That LZ was finished.” Anderson handed the device to Todd, and the latter drove it into the ground. Anderson opened a laptop computer which he used to gather the data generated by the penetrometer. “Ready? OK go,” he told Todd. Todd lifted the weight up to the top of the pole and then dropped it, letting the weight make a loud clanging sound at the bottom.

“Do it again,” Anderson, staring at the computer screen. Clang! “Again.” Clang! “And one more time.” Clang! Todd’s veins popped out of his arm with each repetition. Anderson and Todd repeated the process, with the penetrometer sounding like a church bell ringing and the metal pole thrusting deeper into the ground with each drop of the weight. They did this around different areas of the LZ. Meanwhile, Combs and his colleague of the same trade, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Matthew Montgomery, were setting up panels for a makeshift runway. 10 panels were needed for one LZ. The two took turns hammering the stakes of a panel into the ground, then Montgomery picked up what looked like a rod on wheels. “This is a measuring wheel,” Montgomery said. “You set the wheel on the ground and it calculates the distance you walk.” Montgomery used the measuring wheel to measure the distance required between two runway panels. When he stopped at the perfect distance, he and Combs hammered a panel directly across from the previous one. They finished the first few panels and looked back at their work. “Hey, looks like we need to fix that panel in the back,” said Combs, wiping the sweat off his forehead. “What do you think Montgomery?” “Looks like it, or maybe we’re getting delirious in this heat,” Montgomery replied laughing a little. He poured some water over his face, and drank some as well. “We can fix it on the way back

August 17, 2018 after we finish the last two panels,” he added. They continued hammering away at the stakes as Polish aircraft conducted touch-and-go landings on the paved runway nearby. “You don’t get to do this job as a normal Air Force airfield manager,” Combs said. “You’d be stuck in an office behind a computer. Out here, we get our hands on everything. I was supposed to finish up my enlistment and get out, but I stayed in when they offered me this position.” “I’d reenlist just to keep doing this,” Montgomery added. Both Montgomery and Combs lay claim to the honor of part of an extremely small number of contingency response airfield managers in the Air Force. Whenever a slot opens for the job, it’s not long before it’s taken, Combs added. “Well, that does it,” Combs said, driving in the last stake. “We’ll just fix that other panel in the back and call it a day.” The two met up with the rest of their team just as the latter had finished making their load-bearing assessments of the ground. Anderson was packing the DCP into the trunk of the van while McIntosh snacked on a cucumber in the backseat with the air-conditioning blasting away at his face. The crew hopped into the van, turned up the radio, and rode off — back to their headquarters building. Rock n’ roll music from the 1980s blared through the stereo. “So now the LZ is ready for tonight,” Combs said, enjoying the air conditioning. “I’m hungry; let’s get some food… and a bath.”

SLO helps new students transition smoothly by Mary Ann Davis Installation Management Command Public Affairs Back to school is right around the corner, and the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz School Liaison Officer is ready to help new students transition into their schools with ease. School liaison officers support families in several ways, said Lynn Rice, USAG RP SLO. “We assist families prior to their arrival to the community by providing information regarding school registration, calendars, lunch, graduation requirements, school zones, eligibility requirements, immunization records, youth sponsors and more,” she said. “We are also here to assist families who are already settled in the community with their issues and concerns, while providing resources to assist them. Additionally, as families get ready to transition to a new community, we connect them with the gaining SLO, who can provide transition information for their next duty assignment.” With 13 Department of Defense Education Activity schools in the USAG RP footprint, knowing where their children will attend school can be challenging for newcomers. “Where families live determines where their child(ren) will attend school,” the garrison SLO explained. “For people living off post, it is important to find housing in villages where school transportation will be provided. To help with this, parents can reference the Feeder Zone list at the

available), Rice said. Families living in temporary-lodging facilities on or off post should bring a TLF invoice or receipt to verify their address. Families will register their child(ren) at the school serving the area they are currently residing in. Later, if permanent housing is found in a different school zone, they must reregister their child(ren) in the appropriate school. Registering students for the school lunch program has never been easier, Rice said. Visit https://freeandreducedapps.aafes.com. Lunch prices range from $2.75 to $3 per meal and reduced-price is 40 cents. Additionally, if a family qualifies for free lunch and their child(ren) wear glasses, contact the SLO to learn how to obtain a voucher for $89.95 toward a pair of glasses. Insecurities about new schools can sometimes make it tough for children to get settled in, Rice said. That’s when having a youth sponsor can make all the difference. “The purpose of the Youth Sponsorship Program is to connect an inbound youth with local youth sponsors to help them get a feel for their new community. Youth sponsors provide information on schools, clubs, afterschool activities and community events,” she said. “The program is

geared for sixth through 12th graders, however, if a family would like a sponsor for their elementary school child, we can find one. Families can request a youth sponsor through a SLO or youth center to ensure new youths have as much information as possible prior to arriving.” Getting his children settled into their new school is a priority for Col. Jason Edwards, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, who arrived last month. “Making sure our children have a smooth transition from one school to the next can be extremely difficult,” said the commander and father of two school-age kids. “School liaison officers make a difference in our military communities by providing useful information to minimize the stress our children experience during transitions. I have a personal responsibility to ensure our Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities can utilize such a valuable resource.” For more information or questions about what the garrison SLO can do for you, call 541-9061 or 0611-143-541-9061, visit https://kaiserslautern.armymwr.com/ programs/school-liaison-officer-slo or email usarmy.rheinland-pfalz.id-europe.mbx. dfmwr-slo@mail.mil.

Super MTT comes to Ramstein by Tech. Sgt. Jocelyn Ford 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Operations School instructors with the 423rd Mobility Training Squadron from Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, traveled to Ramstein Air Base, bringing their knowledge and expertise to U.S. Air Forces in Europe logistics officers and planners, as well as other personnel involved in behind the scenes operations of deployment readiness. It was the first time the 423rd MTS sent out a “Super MTT.” The mobile training team carried three courses for logistics personnel and multiple question and answer sessions for unit deployment managers. The Installation Deployment Officer Course, a seven-day course offered six times a year in resi-

dence at Joint Base McGuire-DixLakehurst, was one of the three courses offered to USAFE personnel. IDOC takes logistics officers through everything from contingency planning — “the what-ifs in war” — to crisis action planning, redeployment, and reintegration of their people. Attendees practiced briefs they will be responsible for giving to leadership, obtained instruction on how to train others, and worked through a simulated shift in the deployment control center. U.S. Air Force Capt. Derrick Lohr, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron assistant installation deployment officer, said he went in to the class expecting to gain a fuller knowledge of his duties. “A lot of what we do makes more sense,” he said after the course. Lohr immediately employed the

knowledge and relationships he built while attending the class. Shortly after conclusion of the course, he worked with two of his classmates in the deployment control center during a base exercise. “It was nice having group reps that had been to the class,” he said. Others, including U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Samone Pitts, 86th LRS logistics plans journeyman, attended the other classes Deliberate and Crisis Action Planning and Execution Segments (DCAPES) and the Logistics Module (LOGMOD) training. “My overall take away from DCAPES was understanding how each role comes into play and gaining insight on what the process is like as far as how and when it’s done,” Pitts said. DCAPES is as an Air Force tool used by logistics planners to do daily operations for wartime and exercise planning, execution, and accountability. More than half

August 17, 2018

of the students that attended the DCAPES training, also attended the LOGMOD training. LOGMOD is another system used regularly by logistics planners as a management tool providing command and control capabilities to plan and execute worldwide movement of forces. When it came to LOGMOD, Pitts said she came away understanding how the order of every function affects each other and how important it is to do them in a specific order. Bringing the team to Ramstein, as opposed to sending students stateside for the same training, had more benefits than just saving USAFE money. “I probably wouldn’t have taken in as much info as I did if I had went stateside because the jet lag would have taken over.” Pitts said. Future Super MTTs are in the works for the Expeditionary Operations School, with two scheduled in fiscal year 2019.

LRMC pharmacists make finalist cut for national award by Stacy Sanning Public Affairs Specialist Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Two Landstuhl Regional Medical Center pharmacists were selected as finalists for the Next Generation Pharmacist awards, competing against fellow military pharmacists as well as their civilian sector peers. LRMC Deputy Director of Pharmacy U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Julie Meek is a finalist for the HealthSystem Pharmacist category and LRMC Behavioral Health Clinical Pharmacist Dr. Lindsay Morris is a finalist for the Rising Star Pharmacist category. The Next Generation Pharmacist Award program consists of 10 categories and one overall winner as the 2018 Next Generation Pharmacist. Meek and Morris were selected as one of three finalists in their categories from more than 600 nominations. Meek’s category, Health-System Pharmacist, is awarded to a pharmacist who works in a health-system setting, such as a hospital, longterm care facility, home care, or a health maintenance organization, and has demonstrated improvements in the coordination of care. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Leslie Walthall, director of LRMC’s Department of Pharmacy and Meek’s immediate supervisor, nominated Meek, writing that she works tirelessly to improve

the practice of pharmacy at LRMC as well as throughout the military health system for all services. Meek has spearheaded a pharmacy training initiative that has been adopted as a best practice throughout military medicine. Under Meeks’ leadership and direction, the pharmacy received zero medication management findings within the hospital and was applauded by The Joint Commission inspector as “unprecedented” for a trauma center hospital. “In my 25-year career in the military, Lt. Col. Meek is far and away the best pharmacy officer I have ever

served with,” said Walthall. Meek said she is humbled and honored to be nominated and selected as a finalist for the Next Generation Pharmacist Award. “Most of the accomplishments mentioned were the successes of our entire pharmacy team, and I could not have done this without them,” said Meek. “In addition, I feel very lucky to have a leader and mentor, Lt. Col. Leslie Walthall, to look after me and recognize her people. I admire this quality in a leader and I have been inspired to do the same for the staff that work for me.” Meek has already turned this inspiration into action, nominating fellow pharmacist Morris for the Rising Star Pharmacist category. This category is for a pharmacist who has been practicing for fewer than five years and who is defining the future standard of pharmacy practice. “Her innovation and creativity positively impacts patients and staff each day,” said Meek. “Dr. Morris is always positive and optimistic and she is an energetic and enthusiastic force multiplier in our behavioral health clinics.” Morris recently designed a new clinical pharmacy program focused on military members who are receiving behavioral healthcare. These patients often face unique challenges, including foreign combat, long family separations, significant loss of control, uncertainty in their future and

other sustained stressful conditions. Morris’ efforts help service members better understand their medications and overall treatment plans, improving their health. “I am earnestly grateful for the outstanding behavioral health team that welcomed me with open arms two years ago and for their continual support of me as their clinical pharmacist,” said Morris. “Without such an extraordinary department, none of this would have been possible.” The winners for each category will be announced at the Next Generation Gala event Oct. 5 in Boston, Mass.

Wine village offers delicacies, music by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. Weilerbach’s wine village will open for the third time from 6 p.m. to midnight today and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. “We’ll set up the event at the new and beautiful village square, which, with its water games, is the right location for a wine village,” said Christopher Molter from the

organizing event team. “This village square in the center of Weilerbach has turned into a popular meeting point for local happenings.“ Six selected vintners from wine-growing regions in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen will present their best wines. Caterers will serve various culinary delights such as “Spiessbraten,” or “spit roast,” salmon from the Finnish cota grill and tarte flambee. Sweet specialties include crepes and dampfnudeln, yeast dumplings served with vanilla or wine sauce.

Forget air conditioners – use your rolladens wisely by The Find-It Guide In America, we are used to everything being air-conditioned. Heck, in some states, the only time you don’t have air conditioning is when you run from your car to your house. The southern states know it all too well. In Germany, rarely do you come across air conditioning. And if you do get some relief from the summer heat, it likely is not at your house. Well have no fear. German houses have a built in cooling system that doesn’t cost you any money and it is 100% environmentally friendly! One building feature that has not caught on in the states is the rolladens you find over every window in your house. These roll-down, black-out shades turn your rooms pitch black, which can make for a comfortable sleeping environment (but difficult to wake up to). Whether you have the manual or electric version, you have surely come to love these handy inventions by now. Read more on last page of Properties section Photo by Travelview/Shutterstock.com

Continued from front page of Properties section Without air conditioning at your house, summer time can be unpleasant, especially during the dog-days. If you would like to keep your house cool during the day, follow these simple steps: - As soon as you wake up, open every door and window in your house - Allow the house to cool all the way down until you are about to leave for the day - Close all windows and doors, plus shut all your rolladens while you are away from the house

When you return home from a day of work, you will notice your house is about the same temperature it was when you left it in the morning. What you have just done is virtually reduce your solar heat gain to zero. Additionally, because many houses in Germany are built from stone or concrete materials, they keep the cool in very efficiently.

Some other keep – cool ideas: - Change your sheets to cotton which have much better breathability - Get a buckwheat pillow - the spaces between the hulls allow heat to escape - Rotate your ceiling fan counterclockwise (clockwise in the winter) - Use a cold cloth on your neck - Take a cooler shower so steam doesn’t get trapped in the house - Sleep downstairs! Just because you are on the couch, doesn’t mean your are in trouble - Grill more! No sense in heating up your kitchen to cook when you have a perfectly suitable place outside (and there is no clean up!) Graphics by Flipser and Pikepicture /Shutterstock.com
