496 ABS realigns under 65 ABG Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

MORÓN AIR BASE, SPAIN  Members of the 86th Airlift Wing visited Morón Air Base, Spain, to realign the 496th Air Base Squadron from under the 86th Operations Group, Ramstein Air Base, to the 65th Air Base Group, Lajes Field, Portugal, April 1. “The heartbeat of this organization is being part of the North-Atlantic bridge,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th AW commander. “When you look at that bridge, and how we project power from the east coast of the United States, into Eastern Europe, into Africa, and how we assure our partners here in NATO, we do that from Morón. But there’s another organization under the 86th AW that has the same mission set. And that’s the 65th See 65 ABG, Page 2

Air Force Assistance Fund: Providing a better life for those in need by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen are taught from the first day of basic training to always help the men and women who stand beside them. The Air Force Assistance Fund is a perfect example of how Airmen exemplify this virtue. The AFAF is an annual effort to raise funds for charities that provide support to Air Force families in need (active duty, retirees, reservists, guard and dependents, including surviving spouses). There are four charitable organizations

supported by the AFAF, the Air Force Aid Society, the LeMay Foundation, Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation and the Air Force Enlisted Village. These organizations help Air Force families with educational needs, medical needs and even provide secure retirement homes for widows or widowers of our Air Force members in need of financial assistance. “If you’re really looking for a way to take care of our Airmen and take care of each other, it’s the Air Force Assistance Fund,” said Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “It’s an

opportunity to really give back.” Whether it’s flying an Airman home on short notice because of a family emergency, or helping to pay medical bills when a family member becomes ill, the efforts of the AFAF directly impact Airmen all over the world. “You can donate anytime between March 18, 2019 and April 26, 2019. People can donate via cash, check, payroll deduction, and E-Giving. Each unit has a Unit Project Officer and key workers that will assist anyone interested in contributing,” said Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Marshall, 86th Munitions

Squadron Control Section Chief and representative for the AFAF. Marshall isn’t just a representative for the AFAF, he is also someone who has been helped by AFAF’s critical resources when he was a first term Airman. “I was a married Senior Airman with a dependent stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. There was a rash of vehicle and apartment break-ins and, unfortunately, I fell victim to it twice,” said Marshall. “Due to this situation and the See AFAF, Page 6

James Young, 86th OG commander, transferred authority of the 496th ABS to August, who then transferred authority to Col. Travis Leighton, 65th ABG commander. Although the authority of the unit switched from the 86th OG at Ramstein AB to the 65th ABG at Lajes Field, the 496th ABS will remain at Morón AB. “Whether it’s with joint partners with the U.S. Marine Corps, bilateral relations with the Spanish, or now, evolving the mission to a multilateral with the 65th ABG and the Portuguese, it’s time to make a transition. The heartbeat and foundation will be all of you,” said August.

Ceremony recognizes 27 new CMSgts in KMC Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Twenty-seven U.S. Air Force senior master sergeants were formally recognized for their promotion to chief master sergeant during the Chief Recognition Ceremony on Ramstein Air Base, March 23. The Chief Recognition Ceremony is an event that highlights the newest chief master sergeant-selects’ accomplishments and acknowledges their ability to attain a position within the top one percent of the U.S. Air Force enlisted force. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt.select Jason David, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs senior enlisted advisor, believes this ceremony is the culmination of the work he’s been involved with since being an Airman. “No one makes chief on their own,” says David. “It’s such a humbling ceremony. It reminded me of every team accomplishment, every birthday party, and every return from deployment. I’m proud to have made it this far and I hope to continue to bring others up in the way my leaders have done for me.” U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Sean Nelms, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent, agrees with David’s sentiment and how important their role is in Airmen development. “When I first enlisted I observed the positive influence that the chief master sergeant had on the careers of Airmen,” said Nelms. “I have had many great mentors that have inspired and guided me along the way, many of them were chiefs. I have always wanted to pay that forward and making chief, to me, was a part of that process. In my position, as a chief, I am able to open doors for Airmen that they once saw as closed.” Putting on this last stripe allowed Nelms to be the chief he observed in his early U.S. Air Force career. Despite some sacrifices Nelms encountered while holding the highest enlisted rank, these obstacles never made being chief any less important to him. “No sacrifices I’ve made weren’t worth it,” said Nelms. “Leadership is hard work and takes time to get right. To lead well, I believe you have to listen and build relationships to learn what is really going on. This takes time, but again, worth the investment to try and get it right. Our Airmen and their families are sacrificing so much to propel our mission forward, whether at home station or deployed. They deserve chiefs that are invested in them and making whatever sacrifices are needed to ensure

their needs are being met.” Throughout the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th AW commander; Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief; and Chief Master Sgt. Phillip L. Easton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa command chief, imparted their words of wisdom with Kaiserslautern Military Community’s 27 new selectees before the night came to a close. An idea was reiterated several times by these guest speakers. The notion that it doesn’t matter how long an individual has held the rank of chief master sergeant, because the prestige and respect is unfaltering. At times, this level of respect the rank carries may cause roadblocks in communication with more junior Airmen but Nelms makes it clear that communication with a section’s chief should be encouraged. “I know I don’t always get the ground truth when I am out and about

talking with Airmen,” said Nelms. “They are guarded with information to ensure they say what they think I may want to hear. I wish it were just the opposite. I genuinely want to hear what is going on in their world. I would ask all junior Airmen to be candid and engage with your chiefs. They need to hear first-hand what is impacting you positively, so we can do more of it, and what is impacting you negatively, so we can stop doing it or get it right. Now more than ever, your chiefs are tuned in and listening to you and your needs. We want to make this Air Force more efficient and more effective and we know we need your help and innovative ideas to do that.” David agrees and expands on Nelms’ ideas on why good communication with your chief is important. “A chief has been a time-honored rank with a lot of history throughout the ages,” said David. “At its core, however, a chief is a protector, guide,

and mentor. A chief looks out for the well-being of his or her people. That’s what someone who makes chief needs to embody in my opinion.” The moment the ceremony concluded, the new chief-selects knew it was time to get back to work and resume advocating for their Airmen, this time with an even greater sphere of influence. The new chief master sergeant selects are Chief Master Sgt. Melanie Townsend and Senior Master Sgts: Gilda Alexander, Stephen Bennett, Erik Bensen, Matthew Canoy, Jason David, Yamil Davila, Ernest Dinolfo, Eric Edwards, Brean Fitzsimmons, Carteralynn Ford, Destiny Hager, Jason Hammel, Nakia Hartson, Joshua Lackey, Peter Martinez, Fedrick McBride, Timothy Miller, Jennifer Nalls, Jason Passmore, Christopher Sandlin, Joshua Skarloken, Corey Strother, Larry Tate, Clifford Thebodeau, Chet Tonge and Brian Witte.

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Phillip L. Easton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa command chief, lights the final candle in a traditional candle-lighting ceremony during the Chief Recognition Ceremony on Ramstein Air Base, March 23. The candle-lighting portion of the ceremony signifies the importance every rank contributes to propel the mission forward.

A&FRC provides deployed service member’s families fun, food Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center held a Deployed Family Dinner and bowling night at the Vogelweh Bowling Center on Vogelweh Military Complex, March 28. The monthly event gives families of deployed personnel a chance to meet with other families who are experiencing the same challenges caused by deployment, build friendships, and develop support networks, said Master Sgt. Peter Krueger, 86th FSS A&FRC senior noncommissioned officer in charge. “It’s an opportunity to get kids out of the house, do something fun, and make connections with the A&FRC staff and volunteers who support these events.” The A&FRC provided each family with a free dinner and free bowling for two hours during the event. The A&FRC works with volunteers and private organizations to assist with the dinners. “Private organizations like the Ramstein Officers Spouse’s Club and the Ramstein Enlisted Spouse’s Club as well as funds from the Combined Federal Campaign [Overseas] are used to put these events on,” Krueger said. “Without these contributions we wouldn’t be able to have the events as

often, and they wouldn’t likely be as diverse as they are due to the cost.” Before the bowling started, Col. John Zapata, 86th Mission Support Group commander, thanked families for attending and for taking on the additional burdens while their loved ones are gone. “Deployments are a stressful time for the military member and their families,” said Krueger. “These events allow families to connect with other families whose military member is deployed, and helps build relationships which strengthen a sense of commu-

nity and builds resilience amongst the families. It also helps boost morale and ensure families understand they aren’t alone. This is even more important in overseas areas as extended families tend to be far away and not readily available to assist the family as they would in a stateside location.” Next month’s event is scheduled to be held at the Vogelweh roller rink, Krueger added. For more information or to RSVP for events, call the A&FRC at 06371-475100.

Falcon Loan Program.” The A&FRC provides resources for the AFAS, which is funded directly through generous contributions to the AFAF. “By using the AFAS, I was able to secure an interest-free loan that could be paid out over a 12-month period. This allowed me to move into a house with a

garage with the deposit and first month’s rent paid,” continued Marshall. Without the contributions of the AFAF, helping Marshall would have been impossible. But since the Air Force is fortunate enough to have such generous contributions from Air Force members, Marshall was able to get the help he needed.

Ramstein’s AFAF campaign is open now through late April. If you or someone you know is interested in donating to the AFAF, go to MyPay on the Air Force Portal or contact your UPO to help a fellow Airman in need. For more information on the AFAF, go to https://www.afassistancefund.org.

Quick-thinking wingman recognized as Airlifter of the Week

by Kelly Sanders 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Technical Sgt. Peter Simonelli, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron flight sergeant, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, March 28. Simonelli is no stranger to thinking on his feet; 569th USFPS members are trained to respond at a moment’s notice and no two days are alike. There are, however, days that stand out and put a person to the test. Simonelli recently experienced one of those days when he responded to a call for an individual in crisis. His quick-thinking at the scene assisted the subject and ensured their safety. His actions proved he is a Wingman willing to help another person in distress. Capt. Andrew Neubauer, 569th USFPS operations officer, said Simonelli has been a diligent leader since day one. “He’s a true embodiment of the selflessness and community spirit we at the 569th value in our patrolmen. The actions that he took that day reinforce what everyone in the squadron already knows: when there’s an emergency response where you need deliberate and courageous action, you want Pete Simonelli on your team.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

Public Health Command Europe offers guidance on how to stay tick-free this year

Protecting yourself from ticks is important, but it is equally important not to forget about your furry family members. “Having a pet dog or cat more than doubles the odds that humans will find a tick on them-

ock

.com

selves,” said Maj. Stephanie Kennedy, PHCE Regional Veterinary Clinical Medicine Officer and Consultant. PHCE recommends that pets be treated for ticks year-round and encourages pet owners to talk with their local veterinary treatment facility to determine the best tick prevention for your pet. u /S h “Along with tick preon ev k a h nec vention, pet owners are P h o to by encouraged to check their pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors,” Kennedy said. When checking your pet for ticks, don’t forget to check these five common places ticks hide on dogs: 1. Under the collar: Make sure to remove your dog’s collar from time to time and inspect for ticks. 2. “Private” areas: Make sure to check in the groin area between the back legs and underneath the tail. These are popular spots for ticks to hide. 3. Inside of Ears: All the little crevices inside of an ear make it a popular spot for ticks to hang out. rst

As people spend more time outdoors, so do many insects and pests. Among those are ticks, which can carry several potentially serious diseases. One of the most common is Lyme disease. According to Public Health Command Europe officials, a person with Lyme disease may develop fever, headache, fatigue and a skin rash. This rash is sometimes referred to as a “bulls-eye” rash because it is red and circular in appearance. In most cases, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. However, if the disease is left untreated, it can worsen and cause a number of serious problems, to include, facial paralysis and pain and numbness in the hands and feet. “Ticks can be active on winter days when the ground temperatures are above 45 degrees Fahrenheit but they are most prevalent during warmer days,” said Maj. Amanda Cline, Chief of Entomology at PHCE. So what do you do if you find a tick on you or your pet? Cline says ticks can be safely removed with tweezers. “The first thing to do is to make sure you remove it properly,” she said. “Forget everything you have heard about removing ticks before now. All you need is a pair of sterile tweezers

and simply pull at the mouthparts, or as close to the skin as possible, in a slow steady manner. Following removal, you should apply alcohol or an antibiotic ointment.” Prevention is also important in protecting yourself and your family. Here are five tips to prevent tick bites: 1. Wear longsleeved shirts and pants when in wooded areas. 2. Wear closed shoes — no bare feet or sandals. 3. Use an insect repellent with DEET. 4. Don’t walk through bushes or tall grass. Stay on marked trails, where possible. 5. After being outdoors, check for ticks. Shower and change your clothes.

Between Toes: Spots like between the toes are cozy and not something that’s easy to see - making it a perfect place for a tick to set up camp. Near the eyelids: It can be tricky to tell, which is why around the eyes is one place ticks go unnoticed. If you’re not sure, it’s best to consult with your Veterinary Treatment Facility.

PHCE offers a free tick surveillance program which identifies and tests the ticks for the military and beneficiaries. If you do find a tick on any member of your family, once removed, take the tick to your local medical treatment facility or for your furry friends, to the veterinary treatment facility. Be sure to have information on where you may have been bit and the date it was removed, so PHCE can capture the information. Please do not send or bring ticks directly to Public Health Command Europe. For more information on tick-borne illnesses and how to protect yourself and your family, please talk with your primary care manager or your pet’s veterinarian.

New Warrior Zone opens at Baumholder Story and photo by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Soldiers have a new place to relax in Baumholder with the grand opening of the new Warrior Zone, March 22. The new facility, located in Bldg. 8218, features four gaming stations with gaming chairs, a small movie theater with plush chairs and surround sound, a computer lab with four computers, several indoor and outdoor lounge areas, air hockey, foosball, ping pong and pool tables and free Wi-Fi throughout. The facility also offers several board games, card games and a 4K projector for popular TV shows and events, movie nights and other activities. “This is your place,” said U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse to Soldiers attending the ribbon cutting. “We want our single Soldiers to come here and enjoy themselves. Although we don’t have something like this at all of our installations, it’s a shining example of what could be. This is a great day for our Baumholder community.” After the Hilltop Theater closed in 2016, construction on the new Warrior

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse and Eloy Campos, Warrior Zone manager, cut the ribbon to officially open Baumholder Military Community’s new Warrior Zone, March 22. The new facility provides a new place for single Soldiers to relax and unwind.

Zone facility began two years later, but ran into some construction challenges. This pushed the completion date back, but “it was definitely worth the wait,” said Corey Mehler, a recreation assistant for Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers. “I’m really excited for the Soldiers, because they finally have a place where they can kick back and relax. They work so hard, and now they have a place to hang out and with their friends.” For Private 1st Class Tyrone Brown, a biomedical technician with the 8th

Medical Company (Logistics), this will be a great recreational outlet. “This is really cool,” Brown said of the new Warrior Zone. “This space is nicely done, and I can see me and my friends coming down here to hang out this summer and for big events.” Working in Baumholder since he was a young Soldier serving with the 40th Engineer Battalion several years ago, Eloy Campos now serves as the Warrior Zone manager, Baumholder BOSS adviser and special events coordinator. “I can’t even describe how proud I am

of this project,” said Campos, a former combat engineer. “I believe in what we are doing here, because we are making a difference in single Soldiers’ lives by providing opportunities, not only through the Warrior Zone, but through BOSS.” Although it’s a small community, Campos said, sometimes people still don’t know about the recreational and social opportunities available in Baumholder. “If I could have Soldiers go back to their unit and bring back one person to this facility – it will be a huge success. It’s my call to action for our single Soldiers,” Campos concluded. “They are here serving our country, and their quality of life matters to us. That’s why this facility is here for them to enjoy because they deserve it.” The Baumholder Warrior Zone is available for single Soldiers and their guests 18 and older and is open from 1 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays; and 2 to 6 p.m., Saturdays. The facility is closed Sundays and federal holidays. For more information, call DSN 5312912 or commercial at 0611-143-5312912.

Commander’s hotline addresses post residents’ needs

and families of the Rheinland-Pfalz community. “We care deeply about the safety and well-being of our Soldiers and families. We have work to do to ensure every community member knows this and feels comfortable reaching out to us if needs aren’t being met,” Edwards said. Housing residents should place work orders through the Air Force Housing Maintenance Line if living in Kaiserslautern Military Community family housing, and through the Directorate of Public Works if living in KMC barracks or Baumholder family housing or barracks.

Story and photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz recently implemented a commander’s hotline for on-post housing and barracks residents to reach the garrison commander directly with recurring issues or concerns related to their living space. For issues that have not been resolved in a timely manner after submitting a housing work order, residents are encouraged to elevate their concerns to the garrison command team. A 24/7 number has been established in order to provide community members support around the clock. The hotline recently came into use by a family in Baumholder who had concerns with their dwelling on Smith Barracks. Upon arrival to Baumholder the family received a housing unit that was not up to standard, as mutually agreed upon by the family and the housing lead. The family exercised the use of the commander’s hotline to let the command team know about the issues they were facing. As a result, the family was placed on a wait list for the next available unit with moving costs

covered by the garrison. However, this is a rare occurrence and the intent is to meet the standards upon arrival. “There were no significant life, health, or safety concerns identified that required an immediate relocation of the family, however, this family had endured undue hardships and their own financial burden upon arrival. So, to be able to relocate them at

government expense to more suitable quarters based on family situation just made sense in helping them settle into the Baumholder community,” said Nick Sifer, deputy garrison manager for Baumholder Military Community. Garrison Commander Col. Jason Edwards emphasized that the recently introduced hotline is just one part of the process in best serving the Soldiers

Garrison builds lasting community partnerships

The visit served to strengthen the German-American partnership within the garrison’s footprint.

by Bernd Mai Installation Management Command The U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz commander visited Göttschied Elementary School to strengthen the German-American relationship with the local Idar-Oberstein community, March 26. Col. Jason T. Edwards and his wife, Jackie, were invited by principal Nicole Bier for a tour of the school, but Team Edwards wanted to make the visit more interactive by incorporating a Zumba class and a story hour for the students. Forty children got their hearts racing with a total-body cardio workout that incorporated dance and aerobic movements performed to lively music. Dancing was new to Tristian Z. who tried the workout for the first time with his classmates and principal. “From now on, we want to do this at every sports class,” said Tristian Z. “Mrs. Edwards is very nice and speaks English well.” The class was also fun for Alina P. who kept up with the fast-pace session.

“This was a great sports class. The music was soulful and everything was in English — that was cool,” she said. “This helps us to better understand the language. I personally learned a couple of new words.” Dancing in the class was inspiring, said Khawla A., who “never had such a class before. I hope she comes back again.” The session was enjoyable and fun for the instructor too, who instructs classes in the military community as well. “It was my first time teaching a Zumba class to German children, and it was absolutely fun,” said Jackie Edwards, a school teacher and professional fitness instructor. “I was impressed by how quickly they caught on and how well behaved they were. The students showed great enthusiasm and enjoyed the class just as much as I did.” Being the mother of two schoolaged children herself, Jackie asked the students for recommendations for fun things to do in the local area, and the children responded with visits

to Trier, Idar-Oberstein, golf and a nearby gemstone mine. On a calmer note, the commander chatted with children in another classroom about his job, family and the places he was stationed. He also read a book in English to students to reinforce their language skills. This builds upon an initiative started in 2013 by Bier, the school parent-teacher committee and the Baumholder Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, encouraging Soldiers to read to students. “The use of a foreign language, English in this case, in real situations promotes successful learning,” Bier said. This is the first year that teacher Nick Gedratis was involved in the Baumholder BOSS reading program, and said “it was very interesting to see how the children interact and speak English,” the educator said. “They had many questions for the commander and seemed to be very interested — that’s great. Talking with a nativespeaking person is by far better than anything else.”

Any opportunity to develop relationships between our communities is superb, said the commander. “I was blessed to not only represent the U.S. Army, but do so with my beautiful wife Jackie as a teammate. I was able to read to the class and answer a wide variety of questions and Jackie was able to teach a Zumba class and get the kids active and have fun — something she is very well suited for,” he said. “It was great to see all the kids smiling after her class. The attention and discipline of the classes were amazing, and I loved the fact the students were so engaged not to mention the enthusiasm of the staff.” Although both have a lot on their plate every day, Team Edwards was happy to meet and learn more about people within the garrison’s footprint and support their long-standing, solid partnership. “I have a very busy schedule, but this was such a blessing to engage with such an amazing group of kids and such a welcoming community,” Edwards concluded.

Ramstein boys, girls soccer sweep Spangdahlem by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Jaden Buelvas booted two goals to lead the Ramstein boys soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of visiting Spangdahlem Saturday on Kaiserslautern’s field. The girls team got a hat trick from freshman Gabby Pace and strong leadership from its veterans to beat the Sentinels 7-0. After dropping its game to Stuttgart last week, Ramstein girls head Coach Katina Campbell decided they needed a new look and shook up the lineup. She placed attackers Rocio Fernandez at midfield and Haley Deome on defense. She felt that Stuttgart’s speed did the Royals in and Campbell did not want a repeat of that against Spangdahlem. She also was not happy with a lack of communication on the field. “I felt that we needed more vocalization in the back,” Campbell said. “Haley (Deome) is very vocal.” Against Spangdahlem, Campbell also had to compensate for the absence of the usual starting goalie, Morgan Lewis, replacing her with Kristene Merrill. The moves all worked. Fernandez is one of the best players in the league and controlled the action in the middle. Deome is a natural leader no matter where she

plays. Merrill was perfect but probably the loneliest person on the field as Spangdahlem rarely had the chance to cross midfield. “They played today better than they have been playing,” Campbell said. Besides Pace’s three goal hat trick, the Royals got additional scoring from Brynne Beauchan, Allie Davis, and Alexis Tri. Deome also added a score on a penalty kick. In the boys game, the Royals 3-0 victory kept their shutout streak intact but they had to work hard for it against an athetic Spangdahlem squad. Ramstein has outscored its opponents 11-0 this spring. The Ramstein coaching staff knew that Spangdahlem was bringing the element of speed to the contest and they were aware at the Sentinels athleticism, for which they prepared throughout the week. “Actually, no, we were not surprised,” said Coach Alfredo Rios. “Coach Dom and I told the boys to expect 100 percent from the Spangdahlem team from whistle to whistle. Spangdahlem did not disappoint. They did have some speed in their front line and our boys had to adjust throughout the first half just to keep up with them.” The Sentinels forwards were active and posed problems for the Royals defenders. Ramstein’s disciplined defenders did what they could to make it difficult for them to get the ball, but when they did break the Ramstein defenses, they were stonewalled by outstanding senior goalkeeper Garrett Erickson, who will be playing college soccer in the USA next season. “Our team defense is getting stronger as we continue through the season and that helped against Spangdahlem’s attackers when they were able to get the ball in the box,” Rios said. “Our team co-captains stepped up and took

control of the play on the field today. Garrett (Erickson), our keeper, controlled the defense from the box with conviction and put our defenders in position to prevent possible shots on goal.” The game was scoreless early with neither team able to capitalize on breaks. About halfway through the first half, Buelvas outsprinted the Spangdahlem sweeper and blasted a right footed shot low and to the left of the keeper for the first goal. It was 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Ramstein tightened the reins on the active Spangdahlem attackers and the Royals were more aggressive in their own scoring zone. They got number two when Dieter Messner scored from close in. Buelvas scored again late for the 3-0 margin. Ramstein will return to action on Friday, April 19, when it hosts Lakenheath at Kaiserslautern. The squad travels to Wiesbaden on Saturday, April 20.

Timely relief pitching leads Kaiserslautern over SHAPE by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Kaiserslautern sophomore Ronin Sherman slammed the door on SHAPE with the bases loaded in the last inning to preserve a 12-9 victory in the second game of a baseball doubleheader to complete a two-game Friday sweep. The Raiders won the first game 7-5. With the Raiders cruising in the second game with strong hitting and solid fielding, SHAPE picked up five hits in its half of the third, the

last inning because of the time limit. Kaiserslautern Coach Justin Bates wanted to save his ace, Sherman, for the doubleheader in Stuttgart the next day, but brought him in to get the last out with the bases full of SHAPE runners. Sherman got the final out to preserve the 12-9 final and the sweep. Offensively, Sherman went two for two with a walk, a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Sam Newberry went two for three with two RBIs and George Stephan was one for one with a pair of walks. Justice Harper was the winning pitcher striking out

April 5, 2019 three in two and two thirds innings pitched. In the first game, again it was solid defensive play and strong relief pitching that made the difference. Third baseman Harper had four assists, plus an unassisted double play with the bases loaded that set the tone for the afternoon. Harper snagged a line drive and stepped on third for the out to end the first inning. Kaiserslautern led 4-0 after the first. Sherman led off with a gap double and went to third on an error. A SHAPE error brought home the first run and Newberry ripped a double for the second run. Jace Robinson doubled off the

wall in left to bring home two more for the 4-0 lead. SHAPE tied it in its half of the second inning. By way of a couple hits and walks, they scored four runs and had runners at second and third when the Raiders brought in Tyler Otto to relieve starter Colin Zayd. He walked the first batter to load the bases, but recorded a swinging strike out to escape the inning. The Raiders put it away in the bottom of the inning with three more runs. another. Newberry followed with single and it was 7-4. Stephan closed out the last inning on the mound. With runners on second and third and one out and one run in, he got a fly ball to left field, walked the next man to load the bases, then recorded the final out when the SHAPE batter popped up to first base. The final was 7-5. After a disappointing first weekend against Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern Coach Justin Bates was relieved with the team’s improvement. “I thought we played much stronger defensively today,” Bates said. “Our pitchers threw strikes, and we did a much better job of making the plays you should make.  We hope this is a step in the right direction. Our pitchers really got the job done today.  SHAPE hit the ball really hard more than several times on the afternoon and put it in play consistently.  Still, our pitchers kept the ball around the zone and got outs.  It was very encouraging.” On Saturday, the Raiders bussed to Stuttgart for another double header. Sherman opened the game with a home run against ace pitcher Jack Harris and the Raiders followed with four hits and a walk. But Harris recorded two strike outs with the bases full to get out of the jam. Then in the home half of the first, a Stuttgart

Page 17 grand slam was the major blast and Stuttgart went on to a 12-3 victory. When four games are played in two days, the pitching staff takes a beating. It showed as the Raiders walked 14 batters in the first two innings, which is how long the first game lasted because of the time rule. In the second game, Sherman started on the mound and held Stuttgart close for three innings, but Stuttgart chipped away and picked up five runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. A Kaiserslautern rally brought them to within a run and the game ended with the Raiders making the last out with the tying run on second base. The final score was 8-7. Though they came out on the wrong side in both games, a few breaks could have made the difference. “It was disappointing to come so close to beating a good team like Stuttgart and losing, but we took a lot of positives away from the day,” Bates said. “We hit the ball very well throughout the day. We had 14 hits to their eight. We played through a lot of adversity when some key plays did not go our way.  We have a very positive outlook going into spring break.” Kaiserslautern returns to action on April 19 and 20 with a round robin tournament along with Ramstein, Alconbury and Lakenheath.

Air out your house By FindItGuide.com How many times has someone suggested that you “go out and get some fresh air” when you weren’t feeling great? Well there definitely is some good health advice behind that suggestion. But did you know it can also keep your house healthy...and it is required by German law? Germany’s geolocation on the European continent provides the country with an ample amount of moist humid air all year round. The climate here is even affected by the Gulf Stream as it separates with one part going to the northeast of the U.S. and the other half going to Europe. All that extra humidity through the year means it is tougher to get things to dry out. It also means certain types of mold, especifically black mold, tend to grow very easily. It is this type of mold that can be very dangerous to your house and your health. Black mold can cause, chronic coughing and sneezing, headaches, eye irritation, nose and throat rashes and damage your metabolism. If you rent in Germany, you are obligated to air out your house or apartment every day. In some cases,

your landlord can take legal action against you if there is permanent damage to your rental. Regularly opening your windows and airing out your apartment will regulate the humidity inside and should be done two to four times daily, plus after showering, cooking, or mopping the floors. Unfortunately this rule is not just for the summer time. In fact, it is extremely important to air out your abode in the wintertime even if it is cold outside. You may have noticed households with blankets and pillows hanging out the window as well. That is someone practicing “good house hygiene.” Your sheets can also be a source of mold and mildew if not aired out on a regular basis. Practicing this type of daily routine can save you money on expensive clean-up services later on when your mold concern becomes a mold problem. Another reason mold can build up is forced air systems are not used in Germany like they are in the states. Keep an eye out for the beginnings of mold problems in your dwelling. You may spot small occurrences of mold called “schimmel” behind couches resting against the wall. These areas

should be dealt with immediately with a store-bought cleaner (easily found in your local grocery or hardware store) made specifically for this issue. Because air is such a vital part of keeping your house mold free, furniture is required to be placed away from the walls to avoid mold from forming. During winter months, rooms that are north facing are usually colder and should be heated. Bathroom doors should be kept closed to the rest of

the house while a window is open to allow all the moisture to escape from the house. It is important to clarify that when you are airing out your house or apartment, you don’t just crack the windows open with the wonderful German window feature that is built in. You need to embrace the outdoors! Open those babies fully and get fresh! You will be doing yourself a favor.
