Airlift Wing Sexual Assault Response Coordinator. “This is something that is in plain sight, but it’s hidden. No one really knows the true impact sexual assault has on the community because we can’t see it. What’s important is that we realize it’s impact on our overall mission.” The event included an obstacle course, bubble soccer, tug-of-war, writing letters to survivors, a silent walk, and a Humvee push. “I think each year we learn a little bit more,” said Gustafson. “The first year we only the obstacle course. Innovation Madness is a competition-based outreach campaign promoting Continuous Process Improvement and cultivating a culture of innovation throughout U.S. Air Forces in Europe. During 2017, USAFE saved $17.3 million, and 1.6 million in man hours. “We collect innovations that have been accomplished throughout the 86th Airlift Wing and validate them before submitting as a wing to the Innovation Madness competition,” said Robert Lumaban, 86th Force Support Squadron CPI wing program manager. “The 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron’s innovation helped save money, and contributed to man-hours saved within the wing.” The 86th VRS Vehicle
Operations Flight supports the flying mission at Ramstein by transporting the aircrew, transporting and documenting cargo, and supporting distinguished visitors. “In 2016, we had a rash of accidents,” said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Reid, 86th VRS training and validation operations supervisor. “People weren’t paying attention. Leadership noticed a trend happening and wanted to stop it.” After sitting down with leadership to figure out how to best to mitigate the number of accidents, the 86th VRS Vehicle Operations Flight executed a simple fix that ended up saving time, money, and man hours. “After each incident, we sit down as a group and go over what happened, the mistakes made, and ways to avoid making those same mistakes again,” Reid said. Rather than putting the Airman that caused the incident in a puni-
tive environment, it opened the floor to a more casual environment for the Airmen to learn from each other’s mistakes, Reid said. “Between 2016 and 2017, we decreased accidents by 40 percent,” Reid said. “Identifying the high-risk areas and fixable errors helped save approximately $21,800 in total savings and cost avoidance this past year.” Created in 2015 by the Innovation Transformation and Financial Management offices, USAFE wings compete in a threeround evaluation of their CPI program for Innovation Madness every year, each round’s winner receiving a cash prize. With contributions from units like the 86th VRS to the Innovation Madness submission this year, the 86th AW won the second round, winning $5,000 for the best video production about the wing’s innovation success.

“The event was beautiful,” said Gustafson. “It was a great day. We had great weather, people had a lot of energy, everyone was excited to be here. I actually just heard a participant who didn’t know the answer to a question, and that was the point of this. So everyone in the KMC knows who to reach out to.”

Airman & Family Readiness Center ready to help US citizens cast their ballots by Airman 1st Class Ariel M. Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For those living overseas, the Airman and Family Readiness Center on Ramstein Air Base is ready to assist service members, their eligible family members, and U.S. citizens cast their votes for any United States election. A November 2017 Air Force guidance memorandum to AFI 36-3107 realigned the responsibilities of the Air Force Voting Assistance Program to the A&FRC. After the guidance was released, Ms. Kathy Keane of the 86th Force Support Squadron was
appointed as the Installation Voting Assistance Officer for Ramstein Air Base. She and the other voting assistance officers in the A&FRC are now overseeing the Air Force Voting Assistance Program on base. The Air Force Voting Assistance Program ensures Airmen, their eligible family members and overseas U.S. citizens are aware of their right to vote and ensures that they have the necessary resources to do so. Program representatives assist with voter registration, absentee ballots, providing voting information, and answer various voting questions. Prior to the guidance memoran-
dum, each unit on base had to assign military members as voting assistance officers. Now they can focus on their primary job without having to juggle this additional duty and the A&FRC staff will help customers who want to register and vote. “In reality, the change makes sense,” said Kathy Keane, Ramstein Air Base installation voting assistance officer. “The A&FRC is a resource that everyone already knows and someone is always going to be available to help.” When U.S. citizens move overseas many feel as if their vote no longer counts or they have to jump through
too many hoops in order to cast their ballot. It’s not only important to vote but it’s easy to vote, Keane said. Your vote can and will make a difference and the people here at the A&FRC are here to help. “We as voting representatives are here to walk people through what they need to do,” Keane said. “We’ll be their liaisons to help them register with their state and to answer any voting related question.” Visit A&FRC’s Air Force Voting Assistance page or visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program’s website at https://www.fvap. gov/ for more information.

WPC executes milestone Air Force-Army integration exercise Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s Warrior Preparation Center held exercise Spartan Shield 18-6, from April 12 to 19. Spartan Shield was a simulated air and missile defense exercise and included members from the 134th Air Control Squadron, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, and the 5th Battalion 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. Army Air Defense Artillery Fire Coordination Officers and U.S. Air Force Control and Reporting Center crews trained for five days honing coordination and engagement capabilities in a simulated air and ground fight within the European theater. “The exercise tested joint PatriotCRC crew reactions against a range of simulated air and ballistic missile threats,” said Air Force Col. Michael Rider, WPC Commander. “The new training infrastructure was validated and provided invaluable learning opportunities for all involved. Crews were immersed in a challenging air and missile defense scenario and performed perfectly as a team.” “ADAFCOs provide de-confliction of the joint operating area airspace and provide protection of geopolitical assets as well as joint and combined air plat-

The CRC is responsible for the centralized command and control of the airspace within a given area. crucial to the success of safety and security.” Air Force Maj. Ryan Jobman, chief of modeling and simulations at the European Integrated Air and Missile Defense Center, said the exercise was key in standing up a training facility for ADAFCOs within the European and African theaters. “With this training exercise, we are setting the framework for future missile defense exercises,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Janelle Koch, EIAMDC contributor for Spartan Shield. “We would like to include more lower-tier missile defense into USAFE exercises to enhance the realism and fidelity of the training.” Approximately nine months of planning and testing came to fruition through the work of the WPC staff. “WPC’s role is to ensure our warfighter’s are ready for any scenario,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Aaron McEwen, WPC operations division chief. “Our newest Spartan capability provides unprecedented, realistic CRC and ADAFCO training to the joint warfighter.” McEwen and Tighe both said the collaboration produced results they hoped for to be able to prepare tactical warfighters and strengthen relationships in European defense. “The opportunity to work with the Air Force and provide global security and stability to Europe and the United States is a humbling and exciting role,” said Tighe.

CID seeks qualified Officers to join Warrant Officer ranks
by Criminal Investigation Command Public Affairs Office
QUANTICO, VA The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is seeking first lieutenants and captains, from all military occupational specialties, interested in becoming CID Special Agents to submit applications to transition to a CID Special Agent warrant officer, MOS 311A. MILPER Message Number 18-054, Officer Application Requirements for Appointment to CID Warrant Officer (MOS 311A), outlines the specifics of the program. “Applications will be accepted through May 18, 2018,” said Lisa Dodd, chief of Special Agent Accessions Branch. “Approved applications will be considered by the warrant officer accession board which convenes in July 2018, so qualified applicants are encouraged to visit the closest regular Army CID office to start the process as soon as possible.

Please keep in mind that one does not have to have a police background — it’s not a requirement to qualify and be accepted into this specialized program. A complete list of CID offices can be found http://www.cid. army.mil/.

In addition to the CID Agent application, qualified officers must also prepare a warrant officer application. The warrant officer application, and the CID application and packet submission checklist are available at your local CID office. The warrant officer application requirements, packet submission checklist, and Warrant Officer Recruiting Team points of contact are located on the U.S. Army Recruiting Command website at http://www. USAREC.army.mil/hq/warrant/. For more information, visit www. gowarrantnow.com or contact the Warrant Officer Recruiting Team at usarmy.knox.usarec.mbx.9sbn-woteam-questions@mail.mil. As CID Special Agent warrant officers are subject matter experts and leaders who manage all aspects of felony criminal investigations in all operational environments. They plan, organize and supervise criminal investigations, protective services and ruleof-law operations. According to senior CID leadership, the Commissioned Officer to Warrant Officer Program is open to all specialties. It’s a unique model because company grade officers have a great deal of leadership training early in their career versus a great depth of technical training and our warrant officers have an extensive amount of technical proficiency. This blend between the commissioned and warrant officers is viewed as synergistic because those junior agents can share lessons of both leadership and technical work with the newly transitioned officers. This is the third consecutive year this particular recruiting program has
been offered. Prior to that, transitions were on a case-by-case basis. “The officers that choose to go down the warrant officer path are bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the criminal investigation table, when coupling specialty performance differences between the commissioned and warrant officer ranks,” said Chief Warrant Officer 5 Edgar Collins, CID’s command chief warrant officer. “They are already bringing the leadership traits and skills that are learned as an officer, and they will be applying them once they are a warrant officer.” Dodd added that qualified officers who are interested in becoming CID special agents are encouraged to contact the CID Special Agent Accessions Branch for specific details at USArmy. Join-CID@mail.mil. They can also contact the nearest CID office, where personnel can help answer questions about the special agent program. Those selected for appointment will be scheduled to attend the CID Special Agent Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and the MOS 311A Warrant Officer Basic Course, also at Fort Leonard Wood. Acceptance into the CID program is contingent upon successful completion of all training and a favorable Single Scope Background Investigation. Appointment to warrant officer will incur a six year active duty service obligation. The Europe/Af rica Casualty Assistance Center hosted a casualty managers workshop in Sembach April 10-11 to address overseas issues and highlight ways to enhance existing operations. Drawing from a wealth of experienced experts stationed in Italy, the Netherlands and Germany, the workshop focused on improving the Army in Europe’s Casualty Managers Program. Joining casualty managers for this inaugural event were Survivor Outreach Services staff members, which showed how “SOS fits or interfaces with casualty assistance,” said Kristin James, of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. According to one attendee, from day one it was apparent that the CAC, casualty managers and SOS “are a closeknit family; many of us know one another.” The workshop also showed the entire picture of what occurs when a service member, family member, retiree, civilian or contractor is injured, becomes ill or passes away. Plus it touched on many issues
facing casualty managers here as compared to those stateside. The two-day event covered a wide range of important topics, including: • in-house casualty database, Defense Casualty Information Processing System • casualty forms • best practices • SOS overview • casualty assistance officer reports • mortuary affairs • and resiliency training conducted by the IMCOM-Europe Religions Services staff. A favorite workshop segment was an open discussion by Tawana Smith-Barriffe, USAG Bavaria casualty manager, and Daniel Washington, Baumholder Military Community casualty manager, on handling issues in their areas. Casualty assistance personnel from the CAC in Sembach also presented a more focused set of training geared toward meeting mission requirements — supporting the troops and their families during stressful and sometimes tragic times — correctly. “We have only one chance
to do things right,” said Al Royal, chief of the CAC. “There were two very important takeaways from this working group: we must work together for our families in need; when in doubt, call the CAC. While our mission may slow down at times, it never goes away and is among the most important jobs that the Army does.” At the end, everyone had a better understanding of expectations, recognizing that no one is in this business alone. “I believe that bringing everyone together makes us stronger,” said casualty assistance tech Andrew Strouse. “The workshop was very successful due to the knowledge shared by all,” said Royal. “We are on the path of having one uniformed level of service and response in regards to casualty operations throughout Europe.” The workshop also introduced the newest casualty managers in Europe: Augustus Norvell, USAG Stuttgart; Ryan Stewart, USAG Bavaria-Garmisch; Raul Martinez, USAG Bavaria-Hohenfels; Marcus Ufeanyui, USAG Ansbach; and Zane Frost, USAG Bavaria.

Learn fiscal responsibility during Financial Literacy Month April is Financial Literacy Month, which highlights and educates people about the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy financial habits. During the month, community members can learn about how to eliminate debt, save vs. borrow money, set financial goals and establish a moneymanagement system. Learning about these topics can help increase financial literacy, while giving people the tools to establish or maintain healthy economic habits. Depending on their goals and values, individuals may have different reasons why financial literacy is important to them and their families. “It’s important to know about
finances, so one can be able to live a life that one wants,” said Samantha Edwards, an Army spouse from Kaiserslautern. “Whether it’s traveling or starting a business, your financial education can help your family.” Army spouse Pamela Raville agreed with Edwards. “Having a financial plan is important so that my family is stable financially.” So who should be concerned about increasing their financial literacy? Everyone should want to increase their financial literacy. It’s not specific to any group of people, it’s for all cultures, genders, socio-economic statuses and ages. Imagine for a moment what would happen if everyone were financially literate and applied the principles of financial literacy to their personal lives. People would live with less debt and
stress, while experiencing more fiscal awareness and freedom. Joshua Merrills, an Air Force spouse from Ramstein Air Base, said, “Being financially educated is not only about me and my family. The more educated I am, the better I am able to serve others in my community.” Although increasing personal financial literacy is a great thing, many people may find the topic of finances very intimidating, especially when it involves looking closely at their own financial situation and making critical decisions. This may lead to miseducation, poor monetary decisions and financial hardship, but it can be avoided with timely, accurate fiscal information. Katja Bishop, a volunteer with Army Community Service, said, “It is important to know your financial situation and outlook, so you can make good choices for the future and your children.”
So, whether people want to learn how to invest the money they have left over at the end of the month or simply want to find out more about increasing their savings and decreasing their expenses — financial literacy is the way to go. ACS offers several financial classes to include Matri-Money Workshop for Couples, Thrifty Travels in Europe and Understanding Thrift Savings Plan for people in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. ACS’s accredited financial counselors also provide classes to military units and Family Readiness Groups upon request. things happening in their neighborhood Sunday night. They must keep a watchful eye on their houses and vehicles since Germans observe “Hexen nacht,” or Witches’ Night, April 30. Legend says that on the night of April 30, evil ghosts represented by cold weather, snow and darkness meet with witches and demons at Blocksberg hill in the Harz mountains. Here they get into mischief before they take off on broomsticks, pitchforks and billygoats at midnight. Today, it’s a custom for mainly children and teenagers to play tricks on neighbors. They ring doorbells and run off, put mustard on door handles, hide floor mats and trash cans, remove garden gates and wrap cars in toilet paper. Sometimes, older children or adults do destructive things like lifting drainage covers in the middle of the road or moving traffic signs. Motorists are asked to be very careful at night or the following morning, because these actions create safety hazards and result in property damage. German Polizei will patrol the neighborhoods that night and take appropriate action if necessary. The origin of witches’ night goes back to Pagan times, when people believed
that evil ghosts tried to prevent the “Queen of Spring” from entering the
c o u n t r y. Witches and demons were masters of people and things, so people did a lot to protect themselves. They hid billygoats and broomsticks so witches would not be able to ride on them through the night and do evil things. It was an unwritten law that children must not get beaten with a broomstick, because it could be a witch’s tool. Also, socks were put crossshaped on children’s beds, pentagrams were put over house entrances or sacred salt was scattered over the threshold. Residents used several herbs known to ban witches to smoke out houses and stables. Herbs included rue, St. John’s wort and juniper. Another German tradition observed at the beginning of May is to “dance into May.” Various associations and sports clubs sponsor “Tanz in den Mai” with live music in community halls, sports gyms, or other facilities that house dancing halls. Dances will be offered at 8 p.m. in Erfenbach’s community hall, Kreuzstein 8; and at 7 p.m. in Landstuhl’s Zehntenscheune, Kirchenstrasse 1.
In several villages of the KMC, the May tree will be put up and May fest will be celebrated. Sometimes this ceremony is combined with a village fest. The May tree usually is a fir with the lower branches stripped and only the treetop untouched. The pole is decorated with colorful ribbons and craftsmen’s trade ornaments like sausages for the butchers, pretzels for the bakers, or carved wooden figures. May poles symbolize the beginning of spring and hope for a good harvest. Dance Night in Elschbach April 30, 7 p.m. Dorfgemeinschaftshaus. A May fest with music, arts and crafts, and food specialties will be celebrated from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dorfplatz in Bruchmuehlbach and at the fire station in Hauptstuhl. A forest fest will begin at 10 a.m. in Olsbruecken, and a barbecue fest will start at 11 a.m. at the sports field in Heiligenmoschel. Germany and some other European countries also observe Labor Day May 1. It’s a legal holiday and stores are closed. In 1890, May 1 was proclaimed as the day of the working class by the first international workers’ congress in Paris. It was a day to fight for an eight-hour workday and other working-class rights. Nowadays, trade unions and workers meet for assemblies, demonstrations and political speeches. KAISERSLAUTERN

Ramstein boys lead Euro soccer circuit by Thomas Warner contributing writer In a boys’ soccer matchup between the only remaining undefeated Division 1 schools, Ramstein got two goals from Chris Slover and won 3-1. The game happened on the Kaiserslautern High field, which is being shared by RHS and KHS this season. Ramstein’s win leaves them atop the Division I standings with a month left before the Europeans tournament. Ramstein (4-0) scored first in the match when senior Dylan Grimes found the net at the 15 minute mark. The goal was set up with an assist from Gavin McMillan but SHAPE equalized at the 30-minute mark with a shot that first hit the crossbar but was rebounded and sent home. Ramstein earned a penalty kick in the second half but Slover’s shot was defended by the SHAPE goalkeeper. Just a minute later, though, Slover sent a kick into the nets to help the Royals regain the lead. “Of our starting 11 players, just three are seniors and we’ve been successful with a lot of talented freshmen and sophomores,” said Ramstein coach Dominik Ludes. “We’ve been practicing at three different places due to conFASTPITCH SOFTBALL Ramstein outscores Vilseck twice on diamond The Ramstein Lady Royals remained undefeated but not without a first enduring a huge tussle versus visiting Vilseck High. Vilseck went toe to toe with the defending DODEA champions before the homestanding Lady Royals finally scored 15-14 and 19-11 wins. Ramstein (6-0) needed a last-inning rally to lasso their close win in game one. Vilseck had scored four times in the top of the frame and taken the lead but Ramstein plated three of their own and won. Pitching was not at a premium as both teams combined for 44 hits in the game. The Royals had 5-for-5 hitting by Azure Agricula and three hits each from Anni Nozaki, Mikaela McBroom, and Sydney Smith. Savanna Sparrow had four hits with three RBI, then Agricula, Nozaki, and Arianna Rivera put together six more RBI. That was enough to back senior pitcher Abby Walker, who got both mound victories. “We knew Vilseck was going to be one of the better teams in DODEA this
struction projects and the kids have all responded really well to everything we’ve been doing this season. This group has a big upside if they keep working hard.” Ramstein got a final goal from Slover, a junior, about 10 minutes before the end of the match and was helped by good defensive pressure by team captain Gregory McMillan. Tamar Holmes also had a big defensive game and Ramstein had assists from Grimes and Tony Vilella. The Royals will be back in action this weekend with a game at the K-Town field against Vilseck. Ramstein girls roll past SHAPE The Ramstein girls scored seven goals in the first 35 minutes of their match and cruised to a 12-0 victory over Vilseck. At the top of the girls’ Division I standings are Stuttgart, Ramstein and SHAPE which have yet to lose in league play. Leaders were Rocio Fernandez with four goals, Haley Deome with three, and Jaelyn Galindo with two. Other goals were scored by Gabs Janes and Baleigh McFall. Anna Abell had two assists and Morgan Lewis had a save. The Vilseck games start at 10 a.m. Saturday. Kaiserslautern games cancelled due to track meet A scheduling conflict was noticed season and we look forward to playing them again,” said Ramstein coach Tom Wright. “They are fundamentally sound, make good plays, and are well-coached. What really hurt them was a few errors they made or this could have been a different result. We made some too, but they happened to make a few more. Sometimes it goes the other way. These were two balanced teams and we just had to be diligent, stick with the basics, and stay after it every inning. This was a test for us.” In the second game, Ramstein got five runs in the second and sixth innings plus seven in the fifth to literally overwhelm the Falcons. Smith led the way with four hits and three runs scored. Megan Short, Madison Jarvis and Savannah Sparrow each had three hits. Key hitters who knocked in multiple runs included Jarvis, Short, and McBroom, with nine RBI between them. McBroom and sophomore Short each had a triple while Smith had three doubles in the second game. Anni Nozaki scored three runs and Jarvis scored four times to back Abby Walker’s five-plus

a few weeks ago that would force Kaiserslautern to cancel scheduled games this weekend. A track meet at the stadium kept the Lady Raiders (3-2) from getting needed field time, as they aren’t scheduled to play again until May 4 weekend on the road against Wiesbaden. “Our players have been still practicing regularly and hard,” said coach Lisa Rimmler. “They have put in several hours of community service, too, and just staying focused. We knew the track meet was coming and we are just dealing with it. Our players want to play games, for sure.” The KHS soccer girls also were to play SHAPE, but were in the same predicament as the boys’ team when Ramstein hosted its track meet at the Kaiserslautern facility.
“The SHAPE game was (actually) removed from our schedule and given to Ramstein,” said head coach Susan Fitzpatrick. “This season is a bit different with Ramstein not having a home field, thus RHS track meets and soccer games have to be scheduled around our soccer and track events. After Wiesbaden, we play the following Saturday, May 12 at Vilseck.”

The throwers combined for six strikeouts and both issued five walks in their respective starts. Alamos actually closed out game two with late-inning relief. Young had two hits in each game as the leading Lady Raider batter. Teammate Marianna Conklin also had four hits on the day and one run batted in. Madi Baller went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the second win. “Because of illness and injuries, we had some of our girls play in positions that they don’t normally play in, so it was nice to see them step up to the challenge with wins,” said KHS coach Jesse Costa. April 27, 2018 was fourth in the girls’ final standings. “We got really good performances from both sides and as coaches we are proud of all our athletes who competed at the meet,” Kaiserslautern coach Jason Steadman said. “They all wanted to win and do well with the meet happening here in the KMC. We were strong in a lot of areas.” Kaiserslautern might have climbed past Wiesbaden and Stuttgart if senior multipurpose athlete Jada Branch had been healthy and taken part. Branch was relegated for the second week to volunteer/cheerleader status, making her way from event to event and pepping up teammates, wrapping ankles, and doing some coaching. Santo Starkey won the long jump and was part of a second place 4x100 relay quartet to get KHS key points. Kaiserslautern didn’t actually win first place in many events but scored consistently with several seconds and thirds that gave them the overall top tally. Ramstein’s boys got distance firsts in the 800 and 3,200 meters from Jose Serrano along with winning the 4x800 meter relay race. Austin Higby of Kaiserslautern matched last week’s performance with a 130-feet, 11-inch throw to win the discus event. Ramstein sophomore sensation CiCi Williams took first in the girls’ 300 meter hurdles as well as the long jump, to go with a top-three sweep of the 100 meter hurdles event by three other Lady Royals, but Kaiserslautern finished just ahead in the final overall standings. Zhane Williams of KHS was a winner for the second week in a row with a 31-feet, 1.75-inch effort in the shot put and she was second to teammate Mercedes Durden in the discus. Top finishers from area schools are listed, with times and lengths in their respective events. There are multiple meets involving area schools set for this weekend.

Solo Turgeon took first place in the 110 meter hurdles and the long jump. Lorne Huxtable won first in the triple jump and second in the 110 hurdles. Lyndon Winfrey was second in the discus and Jesse Espinoza was second in the 3,200 meters. Scattered other Baumholder athletes had high marks including the first place boys 4x400 meter relay team of Turgeon, Huxtable, Conner Brinkmeyer, Chandler Pigge. Baumholder also won the 4x800 meter relay with Brandon Bankston, JJ Comley, Jesse Espinoza, and Amir Jones-Scott. The 1,600 sprint medley quartet of Wilbur Turgeon, Brinkmeyer, Jacob Gregg, and Comley had another first place run. Brinkmeyer was second in the long jump, Prentiss Alford was third in the high jump, and Jones-Scott was third in the 800 meters. Hanna McCullum took third on the girls’ side in the long jump. BASEBALL Ramstein flexes muscles against Vilseck The Royals (6-2) had sharp pitching in both games and won by scores of 12-1 then 10-3 at the Southside Field complex. Chris Guzaldo was the batting leader for Ramstein in the second win, with a 3-for-4 performance and the plate and two scores. Tieran Shoffner walked and scored twice and the Royals got a double
Page 17 and another hit for two RBI from Ethan Smith at the bottom of the order. Nemo Kindle allowed three hits over three innings of mound work, then Jeremy LeClair teamed with Chandler Baker to close out the game with no-hit pitching. The trio struck out nine Vilseck batters. “Kindle is a guy who goes to school at Baumholder, but since they have no baseball team he got permission (from DODEA officials) to practice and play on our team,” RHS coach Travis Shoffner said. “He’s been solid defensively at shortstop and we got a couple of great plays at third from Tieran Shoffner this week. It was good pitching for us but we also had great defense around the field with no errors.” Guzaldo got a hit and a walk for two RBI as the first game was all Ramstein from start to finish. Kindle scored three times and the Royals got two scores from Baker and LeClair as Vilseck pitchers gave up 10 walks. Kaleb Bellew Chris Guzaldo and Guzaldo combined on the mound to throw a one-hitter with six strikeouts and just four walks. Bellew, Kaden Romleski and LeClair each had a double as part of Ramstein’s 12-hit attack while Kindle stole three bases. Kaiserslautern splits wins with Wiesbaden WIESBADEN The Raiders (5-3) won their opener 10-9 at the ballpark on Clay Kaserne but came up short in a 3-1 loss to close their road trip. They will play a friendly game versus Schriesheim Raubritter this week before returning to DODEA action at home today and Saturday against SHAPE and Lakenheath. In the second game Saturday, the Wiesbaden team scored twice in the third inning and allowed the Raiders just four hits, including two by Mathias Perrin. Nolan Sherman threw most of the game but Kaden Senkbeil threw the final inning. They gave up only five hits and two walks but got no backing from their offense. The first game was better for K-Town, with Ronin Sherman tagging two hits and Perrin responsible for two RBI. In total, Kaiserslautern had eight hits and was able to use a sevenrun third inning to establish the lead. Later, the Wiesbaden team rallied for five runs in the final inning but were shut down by a relief pitching strikeout from Nolan Sherman. His brother, Ronin, was the starting KHS pitcher and those two Raiders had the only extra-base hits for the winners.

Continued from front page actually want and expect them to arrive — don’t plan to have that 15 minute American buffer zone to put the finishing touches on your hors d’oeuvres.
There are reports of an “Akademisches Viertel” (academic quarter-hour) clause which gets you off the hook if you are less than 15 minutes late. The best thing to do is just to be on time.
If you have a meeting or are invited to a social function, and you find yourself running late, call to announce your late arrival (preferably before the time you were expected).
Remember that in Germany, time is usually on the twenty-four hour scale, like in the military, not the twelve-hour one. Sometimes when speaking, Germans will use the 12 hour clock. Usually, this does not cause confusion. Very few people in Germany eat dinner at 8 in the morning.
SIDEWALK & STREET Photo by Menna / Shutterstock.com

Whether you own a home or live in a rental, it is your
responsibility to sweep the sidewalk and street in front of the house. You also need to pull out the weeds in the sidewalk. Failing to do so can result in fines. In the winter months, you must clear and sand/salt your sidewalk between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. If someone slips and breaks their leg in front of your house during this time, you will be liable. (Note: if you have an elderly neighbor, go ahead and clear their walk, too. You’ll gain a bunch of brownie points for the next grill party.)

There is no shortage of festivals in Germany, especially once the seasons change from cold, dark and dreary to warm, sunny and colorful. Most of these festivals (ok all of them) are centered on t wo main things– food and drink. They may all be set in different villages with different themes, but these t wo things are always at the heart of each fest. This is completely fine with me!

OLIVE OIL FESTIVAL
IN ZELL IM ZELLERTAL
One of these fests is Olive Oil Festival in Zell im Zellertal. This year’s festivities will take place on April 28 and 29, 2018. The Village I have been looking forward to the Olive Oil Festival Zell im Zellertal ever since I first saw it advertised a couple of months ago. This village is one of my favorites for a weekend drive. It’s one of the quaint villages with such nice people and the open vineyards where you can walk among the vines. Oh, and the views are spectacular! And obviously I was looking forward to the “tasting”. Normally when I say that, it involves wine. This time, it was ALL about the olives. As I approached the village of Zell im Zellertal, I was really mesmerized by those yellow fields. I have always wondered what those yellow flowers are since I’ve heard everything from Canola to weeds. Keep reading and I will tell you what I learned from a sweet German lady from Wiesbaden. The Festival This year will be its 18th anniversary but even three years ago, it was packed! It was also warm and sunny outside after three straight days of rain, so that might have been a contributing factor. Either way, everyone was in a wonderful mood and I only was scolded in German once with “Einbahnstrasse!!” (one way street). It was one of the first Deutsche words that I learned and unfortunately one of the German laws that I happen to violate more than I care to share. So I want to warn you as you go out to these small villages, sometimes when they allow you to park along-

side a narrow road and it is a twoway road…they change the rules and make it a one-way road just for the event. There isn’t always a sign for this. It’s just something that is understood. I know this because it was explained to me in great detail. Various Olive Oils I guess I didn’t know how many different types of olive oil there are until I visited this festival. I must have tasted at least ten and there were a few more than that. I am not an olive oil connoisseur, so I could only tell the difference in spicy and tart. I feel like the lady explaining it to me knew a lot more than I did and would not approve of me generaliz-
ing the flavors here. These oils are the current year’s harvest and Photo by Cheryl Koller are brought in from Italy, Spain and other surrounding areas. Although I didn’t purchase any olive oil at this festival since we brought enough for a year back from Croatia, I did stand in line long enough to get a plate of olives and olive paste drizzled in spicy olive oil to enjoy with my Rosé Secco. I then sat down at a table with two
lovely Germany ladies and began a conversation. It turns out that the fields of yellow are Rapeseed, which is actually what Canola oil is derived from. Mystery solved! I did not stay very long at this festival since I had to make the trip alone, but I did take the time to walk through and see all of the different vendors and listen to some live music. How to Get There Zell im Zellertal is an easy 40 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern, 50 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 2 hours northwest of Stuttgart. Author’s Profile: Cheryl Koller is a native of Georgia. She is a DOD spouse, mom of 4 daughters (2 adults, 2 teens), thrillseeker, avid traveler, and lover of food and wine. She is a self-proclaimed FreedomPreneur and Blogger currently living in Ramstein with her family.
