Vigorous Warrior 19 ensures readiness, strong partnerships for USAF medics Story and photos by 1st Lt. Andrew Layton U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

CINCU, ROMANIA  Exercise Vigorous Warrior 19, NATO’s largest-ever medical readiness event, ended Friday with ceremonies at Cincu Military Base, Romania. Beginning April 3, approximately 50 Airmen from the 86th Medical Group worked with over 2,500 military personnel from 39 NATO and partner countries to improve interoperability and readiness in a simulated Article 5 combat scenario. For the U.S. Airmen participating, the exercise provided valuable experience operating an expeditionary medical support system (EMEDS), essentially a modular field hospital designed to be deployed and fully See VIGOROUS WARRIOR, Page 2

Instead of commanding officers shouting orders, it’s now teammates calling audibles. He no longer wears a Kevlar helmet, trading it in for a football helmet. Whether it is the U.S. Army or the NFL, Alejandro Villanueva has always been a part of a team. He’s currently with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he knows he’ll always be a soldier. And part of being a soldier is upholding the Army values of selfless service and duty. See NFL PLAYER GIVES BACK, Page 6

The EMEDS is considered a Role 2 medical facility under NATO doctrine. “When we started the exercise, I asked the team how many of them had deployed in a setting of trauma patients and only seven people raised their hands out of the 49 we have here,” said Chief Master Sgt. Amy Riley, 86 MDG, group superintendent. “I think one of the lessons learned for them is the ability to move outside a clinical setting, which is very controlled, into a very uncontrolled environment. It proves a lot when you put them in a realistic training scenario such as this, pushing them outside their comfort zone.” This year marks the fifth time Vigorous Warrior has been held biannually at locations across Europe, and the first time that U.S. Air Force assets have participated in the exercise. During Vigorous Warrior 19, medical personnel were subjected to a rigorous operations tempo that included more than 1,000 scenario injects, 300 medical actions, and more than 1,500 simulated casualties. The two-year planning process for this battery of drills was overseen by the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine, Budapest, Hungary, led by Col. Dr. László Fazekas, Hungarian Armed Forces. “From these 39 nations, it’s not only military personnel, but civilian medical specialists,” said Fazekas. “In every Vigorous Warrior exercise, we try to include a new theme into the training objectives, and this time one of the new things was to work on close cooperation with civilian medical forces; in this exercise we had 600 civilians participating from many non-governmental organizations, as well as the disaster response systems of Romania and Hungary.” Fazekas also pointed out that cooperation between military and

civilian medical counterparts works for the benefit of troops and civilians alike, helping to ensure the best possible stewardship of resources by sharing and pooling knowledge, experience, equipment, and facilities. “It is a military medical platform for many issues, first of all training

for multinational personnel; but as a platform, it has many other purposes,” said Fazekas. “We can test our new concepts here, we can test doctrine, and we can even perform scientific research together.” Airmen participating in Vigorous Warrior 19 took full advantage of

the opportunity to share knowledge and build professional relationships with colleagues from a diversity of backgrounds. On Thursday, a surgical team from the 86 MDG integrated into the exercise’s Romanian armed forces Role 3 medical facility, and vice versa. Both teams participated in a pair of challenging surgical drills at their respective sites, adapting together in an unfamiliar space with colleagues who did not share a native language. Experts from the NATO MilMed COE said afterward that had the exchange occurred in a realworld scenario, the surgical actions performed would likely have been successful in saving the patients’ lives. “With our Romanian partners coming into our facility, we demonstrated that we can actually stabilize patients in an integrated environment,” said Col. Michael Roberts, 86 MDG, commander. “The interoperability piece to that is huge, because it’s not going to be individual nations operating alone in an Article 5 combat situation; it would be all of us in NATO, participating across a common line as partners.” The 86 MDG’s participation in Vigorous Warrior 19 was funded by the European Deterrence Initiative, which underwrites improvements and activities that increase U.S. European Command’s warfighting capabilities, assuring our allies of the U.S. commitment to regional security and territorial integrity while simultaneously increasing the capability, readiness, and responsiveness of the alliance’s forces. The dividends from this kind of investment into U.S./European strategic partnerships are clearly visible. “The strategic importance of multinational training, especially in a NATO context, is absolutely monumental; it’s paramount to us doing our job from an Article 5 perspective,” Roberts said. “The more we can do this, collectively, as a group of nations on the field, the better off we’ll be if we are called upon to do this in the real world.”

Airman who provides lifesaving blood receives Airlifter of the Week honors Story and photos by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Having a constant supply of lifesaving blood products available to customers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is critical to saving lives. Without these blood products, Landstuhl would not be able to operate as an emergency facility or support their daily mission of caring for members across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Tech. Sgt. Déja Kiziah, 86th Medical Squadron non commissioned officer in charge of shipping, is the reason people in need of these medical products are given a second chance at life. Kiziah ensures that warfighters across U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command receive lifesaving blood products on a continuous basis, while also supporting various missions and exercises. In addition to the blood customers she routinely supplies, Kiziah also coordinated the shipment of 60 blood components to multiple teams in support of exercise African Lion, a multinational joint and combined exercise conducted in the Kingdom of Morocco. African Lion consists of approximately 1,200 U.S. military personnel from the U.S., Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Tunisia,

Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Portugal. For this mission to be successful, Kiziah had to coordinate multiple flight requests with Air Force partners in order to guarantee that the blood arrived in time for POCs on ground at the destinations. “I think the biggest thing

for the donor center that’s so challenging is that this mission never stops. No matter what day it is, what holiday it is, the mission goes 24/7. So, at the end of the day, if we have blood that needs to be processed and labeled, our team is in here doing it. If we need blood collected, our team is collecting,” said 1st Lt. Nyree Watts, chief of the Armed Services Blood Bank Center for Europe. To add to the challenge of supporting African Lion, Kiziah had to make sure that the shelf-life of the products she supplied could carry the teams through the end of the exercise. Kiziah sent a combination of low titer blood group “O” whole blood, liquid plasma, and packed red blood cells to alleviate the teams from the burden of carrying and maintaining any frozen blood products. Kiziah’s drive for excellence, attention to detail and dedication to the mission is key to the safety of warfighters, making her the perfect candidate for Airlifter of the Week at the world’s best wing.

Ramstein Cadet Squadron: ‘Finding a way to yes’ Story and photo by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every organization in the U.S. Air Force has a set of Air Force Instructions that provide a framework for how the unit should function. As an official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol guidelines were created specifically for stateside units. For the Ramstein Cadet Squadron, being overseas leaves a lot of room to find a way to solve their unique challenges. The Ramstein Cadet Squadron was established in 1987 and is the secondoldest, continuously operating organization on Ramstein. The Ramstein Cadet Squadron is the largest overseas squadron and now has more than 100 personnel. Cadets range from 12 - 21 years old and senior members are 18 and up. CAP squadrons train members in cadet programs, Aerospace education, and training in emergency services. This gives cadets a chance to learn leadership skills and develop an interest in aviation related careers. The training also teaches them skills they need to serve the emergency services functions of the CAP, including aiding in search and rescue, and disaster relief operations. Many training opportunities and capabilities are limited for units operating overseas. Master Sgt. Michael Livesay, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron production supervisor, is also a Civil Air Patrol Major who recently relinquished command of the local unit. He said one of the challenges he faced was securing space to conduct the annual training encampment. But, he said U.S. Air Force units like the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, and others in the Kaiserslautern Military Community take a total force approach to supporting the local unit. “The 435th Construction and Training Squadron compound gave

us the capability to hold the encampment at the CTS training grounds,” said Livesay. “We put the cadets out in the field for seven days. They have so much fun that whole week. It’s a highlight of their summer, and their time in CAP.” The Ramstein Cadet Squadron created a training conference for senior members to further their career development and volunteers from the 521 AMOW and 435 AGOW trained junior cadets during the encampment. “We had two prior basic military training instructors go out and had a wonderful interaction with the cadets,” said Livesay. “The training they gave as instructors was scaled perfectly for the cadets.” Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, allows cadets and their families to tour the base and participate in open house visits with units on Ramstein Air Base. With such a large organization the CAP unit has to navigate transportation and logistics. The

unit cannot permanently have a government owned van. “Every year we get bigger and bigger, and we have to figure out how to move these cadets,” said Livesay. “We worked with 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron to get a bus to move our cadets on time.” The group visited with the 24th Intelligence Squadron to fulfil the aerospace mission to allow cadets to meet U.S. Airmen who work in aerospace and engineering careers and ask questions about the work they do to generate interest in the career field. One of CAP’s notable training opportunities is the chance for cadets to fly single engine aircraft and gliders. Livesay says every cadet who joins stateside gets five seat rides in a powered air craft and five in a glider. The cadets meet specific training objectives with each ride. “CAP stateside has the largest fleet of Cessna aircraft in the world,” said Livesay. “Overseas, we’re not allowed to

have any aircraft. So we work with a local aero club, and our national headquarters, and figured out how to coordinate everything to get cadets their orientation flight.” Because of their efforts the organization has been able to spread the capability across the European theatre and helped members from Wiesbaden, Ramstein, Stuttgart, Spangdahlem, and Mildenhall accomplish orientation flights. Livesay says through trial and error, the cadet squadron has redefined what it means to be an overseas CAP unit. “Someone asked me what my proudest achievement when I was in command I think it was pushing the envelope,” said Livesay. “You can’t keep them in the box. They will always find some way to push it out. ‘You can’t do this?’ Well, why not?” They are the first overseas squadron to receive the quality cadet unit award two years in a row and were also awarded their fourth unit citation.

NFL PLAYER GIVES BACK from Page 1 Villanueva, one of the Steelers offensive linemen, spent three days in the Kaiserslautern Military Community hosting autograph sessions and football camps for both youth and adults. “I do this in the states but I felt like coming out here to Europe where I played high school football and to a location that means so much to all the service members who come back,” said Villanueva. “Obviously I owe a lot to these (service members) and their families as well.” During the camps, number 78 taught football fundamentals to both the young and the young-at-heart. He tied those fundamentals to being a service member. “Training for the military, everything you do, you do with your team,” said Villanueva. “You do it with your guys. In the NFL it’s a little bit lonelier because you’re competing with everybody around you, so you don’t really get that same team feel.” Villanueva, a Meridian, Mississippi, native, challenged his camp attendees to practice perfection in regards to both fields, football and combat. “The more you rehearse an operation, battle drills, briefing, the more comfortable you’re going to feel,” he said. “And when you go out on the field it feels second nature. You can talk about football in the same sense. The more you rehearse the same play and focus on the details then when you go out on the field you can execute on the highest levels.” He continued, adding that while perfection may be statistically improbable, the pursuit of it is what truly matters. “You know you’re always going to be making mistakes,” said the former Army captain. “But always having the relentless attitude to fix everything is going to make you a better player, a better soldier, and a better family member.” Attendees of the camps expressed their gratitude to Villanueva for visiting and hosting the camps, who in return thanked them for what they do. “I’m always shaking service member’s hands and thanking them for their service,” he said. “You always have to remember that they have families because it’s very difficult for the families to be out here as well. To be away from their mothers and fathers, to maybe have to go around every single year and meet other kids all the time. For their sacrifice, anything I can do feels good and if it does help the service member…by all means it’s something that makes me feel pretty good.”

USAFE Surgeon General hosts NATO Dental Workshop

NATO Dental Workshop attendees pose for a group photo with members of the 86th Medical Group leadership and U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Office of the Command Surgeon members, after a tour of the 86th Dental Squadron on Ramstein Air Base, March 27. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Approximately 26 military dental officers from 10 countries attended a deployed dental readiness workshop hosted by the U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Office of the Command Surgeon, March 25-29, on Ramstein Air Base. Dental officers from Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, and the United States, attended the workshop, which focused on dental readiness,

standardizing skillsets, and improving interoperability in deployed locations. “Dental readiness is a key component of medical readiness,” said Maj. Jonathan Harmon, USAFE-AFAFRICA Office of the Command Surgeon international health specialist. “Dental emergencies are a common reason for military personnel to return early from deployments. This is not only costly, but it disrupts the mission at hand. Additionally, dental pain can be an unwelcome distraction in an environment that is already stressful. This event highlights the need to prepare troops and dental professionals for deployment.”

Nine military medical professionals, one German soldier and eight U.S. Army Soldiers, proved their medical understanding and earned the Expert Field Medical Badge on April 2 at Camp Aachen. 249 candidates, comprised of U.S. Army Europe units and eight allied and partner nations, started their journey to earn the EFMB March 22, 2019. The EFMB, is a coveted badge for medical professionals, not only in the U.S. Army, but amongst allied and partner nations. The badge signifies to others that someone is proficient in warrior and medical tasks such as Tactical Combat Casualty Care. Candidates who earned the EFMB were; Capt. Michael Mooney, Dental Activity Bavaria; Capt. Charles

Schwarten, 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion; Capt. Corey Carroll, 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion; Capt. Mark Doherty, 212th Combat Support Hospital; Capt. Ricardo Carino, 212th Combat Support Hospital; Second Lt. Hannah Nehring, 1st Infantry Division; Lt. Alex Burghard, German Army Bavaria; Staff Sgt. Jose Lopez, 173rd Airborne Brigade; and Sgt. Joshua Meyer, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. New standards for the EFMB were emplaced across the Army as of March 1, 2019. Standard changes included unit’s better prescreening candidates with testing guidelines and requiring each candidate to qualify expert with their assigned weapon to be eligible to compete. Additionally, the Army Physical Fitness Test has been added to earn the badge. Candidates must score an 80% in each event to meet the standard. Land Navigation was also updated alongside Tactical Combat

The event is the first of its kind and synchronized efforts to adhere to NATO standards with regards to dental readiness. “Oral health care is organized differently among NATO countries, Partnership for Peace nations, and allies,” said Harmon. With this workshop, the multitude of dentists were taught standard dental steps to further the capability of military dental readiness. “The dentists have been taught what to expect as a deployed oral health care provider and were given additional knowledge and skills that can be employed in Casualty Care tasks and a written test. “A lot of candidates do not take into account how tough and taxing this testing is,” said Master Sgt. Christian Cuyno, EFMB cadre from 30th Medical Brigade. “They have to ruck over two-miles to the testing site, run the testing lane at combat speed and complete tasks to standard, and then ruck back. It begins to take a toll on these candidates.” The first day of testing started with 249 candidates taking the APFT followed by a written exam. On day two only 133 candidates remained to test their land navigation skills to find at least three of four points during both a day and night portion. “We had a good train up at my unit prior to coming to EFMB testing,” Meyer said. “We went through standardization and I found a lot of good attack points to assist with night land navigation which got me in last year’s competition.” One successful candidate had to overcome all the regular challenges, but also the challenge of a language barrier.

austere locations,” said Harmon. Members of the 86th Dental Squadron gave the dental officers a tour of the facilities on Ramstein to show the amount of staff and equipment required to keep the U.S. Air Force members ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. “This information can now be shared with other professionals and medical leaders within their country to improve the oral health of military personnel,” said Harmon. “The workshop has also established a stronger network among the participating dentists which will be leveraged to collaborate for future events.” “The written test was a challenge because some words were unknown to me,” Burghard said. “I had to guess on a few questions because I did not know the word and the cadre were not allowed to explain it once testing started.” The new standard has made an already tough to earn badge a little bit tougher as the success rate in Europe dropped 10% from the previous year. Testing conducted in 2018 had a 13% passing rate under the old standards and dropped down to a 3% passing rate during this first testing with the new standards. With additional tasks and tougher standards, the EFMB will continue to be a coveted badge as well as an identifier to others that the badge holder is a proficient, skilled, and competent medical professional. “Set yourself 50 meter targets and focus on one task at a time during EFMB,” Meyer said. “Also make sure that you have a good unit train up prior to coming out to EFMB. It makes it easier to focus on the task at hand instead of having to focus on studying for everything all the time.”

by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The night of April 30 in Germany marks Hexennacht, or “witches night.” In Germany it is celebrated to say goodbye to winter and welcome spring. Off-base residents may experience some funny and strange things. They must keep an eye on their homes and cars since it is custom for children and teenagers to play tricks on the neighbors. Popular tricks are the wrapping of cars with toilet paper, and the spraying of doors, windows and cars with shaving cream, mustard and ketchup. In recent years, older children and even adults started to do destructive things like removing drainage covers in the middle of the roads or on the sidewalks and removing or turning street signs. Motorists are asked to exercise caution when driving in the middle of the night or the next morning. German Polizei will patrol the neighborhoods that night. The night from April 30 to May 1 is considered to be the night when the witches and demons held a big feast, especially on the Brocken, a

hill in the Harz mountains, also known as Blocksberg. Hexennacht, also known as Walpurgis Nacht, is an abbreviation of Saint Walpurgis Night. It is the eve of the Christian feast day of Saint Walburga, an 8th century abbess in Francia. The feast commemorates her being canonized on April 30. The daughter of a West Saxon chieftain had two brothers, Winebald and Willibald. She and her two brother studied at Wimborne Monastery in Dorset, where Walburga became a nun. She was sent to Germany to help with missionary work, in 748. After two years in Bischofsheim, she became abbess of the double monastery at Heidenheim, which was founded by her brother Winebald. After his death, the Bishop of Eichstadt who was also her brother Willibald appointed her abbess of both monasteries. Saint Walburga was known for exorcising demons from sick persons. Saint Walburga passed in 779, she was first buried at Heidenheim and on May 1, 871, she was transferred to Eichstadt to be reburried next to her brothers. Another German tradition is to put up a May

tree on either the evening of April 30th or the morning of May 1st and “Tanz in den Mai”, “Dance into May,” symbolizing the start of spring. Usually a birch tree is used and the treetop is decorated with colorful ribbons. “Tanz in den Mai” is a village fest organized and sponsored by different associations and sports clubs with live music entertainment in community halls, gasthauses, or other facilities that allow you to dance. May 1 in Germany is a legal holiday also called Labor Day. It was on May 1st, 1890, when for the first time, workers demonstrated for better working conditions in Germany. Workers were demonstrating for an eight-hour workday and other working-class rights. However, it was not until 1919, that May 1st was proclaimed as a legal holiday. Still in this century, on May 1, trade unions and workers meet for demonstrations and political speeches. Ramstein balance prevails over Lakenheath; Kaiserslautern splits in league baseball matchups by Robert Baldwin contributing writer As the Ramstein youngsters keep maturing, the victories keep on coming, each more convincing than the last. On Friday, the Royals got strong pitching and perfect defense to remain undefeated by sweeping Lakenheath 14-2 and 13-3 on the Kaiserslautern field. Kaiserslautern split with the Lancers, winning the nightcap 12-8 after dropping the opener 12-5. One of the oldest baseball bits of wisdom comes at the beginning of every game when the manager tells the starting pitcher to “just throw strikes”. But in an ironic twist, it was that advice that did in Lakenheath pitcher Chris McIntosh against Ramstein. In the first three innings, he was wild, walking several and hitting four batters and the Royals could not get good swings against him. But in the fourth inning, when McIntosh settled in and started throwing strikes, the Ramstein bats exploded for seven runs. Makani Stenger and Chris Guzaldo both got on base and were driven home by Kaden Romelski’s double. Other key hits in the inning were a double by Tieran Shoffner, and singles by Nathan Pate and Ethan Smith. Smith went the distance on the mound and gave up two runs on five hits, striking out nine, including three straight in the top of the second inning with the bases loaded. In the second game, the Royals broke it open with a nine run third inning and won 13-3. Smith, Kelty Hood, Guzaldo, John Odom, and Stenger all had RBIs in the inning. Shoffner picked up the victory with two and two thirds scoreless innings, surrendering one hit. The Royals are 8-0 now and are just starting to hit their stride with eleven of the players being freshmen or sophomores. They are like a bunch

of feisty colts cavorting in the field. But even thoroughbreds need to be reined in from time to time. Senior catcher Nathan Kranz is the cowboy who makes sure the colts don’t jump the fence. It is his calming influence that keeps them grounded, whether it be when they are successful or when they are struggling. “When we talk between innings on the bench, instead of chewing them out, I try to change the subject,” Kranz said. “Get their mind off of baseball, relax, crack a joke, get them loose because when they are loose they do better.” He also lets them know that he knows their strengths and weaknesses and urges them to throw all their pitches in crucial situations, which in turn helps them get over lapses in self confidence. “I put a lot of faith in all my pitchers,” he said. “I try to get an element of trust. They can trust me behind the

plate. If they want to throw a curveball, I let them throw a curve and they know I will catch it or block it and it won’t get past me. It helps with their confidence and I think they then just try to dish it.”

Ramstein and Wiesbaden remain the only undefeated teams in the league. They meet on May 11 in Wiesbaden. On Saturday, host Kaiserslautern was doomed by a nine run Lakenheath fourth inning leading to a 12-5 loss. The Raiders committed five errors in the inning and were outhit ten to four in the game. In the nightcap, Ronin Sherman threw 96 pitches and the Raiders took advantage of five Lancer errors for the victory. Trevor Sullivan was 2-3 with 1 RBI and Sam Newberry was 1-3 with 2 RBI. “We were happy to win game two, but we were hoping to win both,” said Coach Justin Bates. “Tyler Otto and Ronin Sherman pitched well while dealing with adversity (shaky fielding). Sullivan had a good day, with an outstanding diving catch in right field and a couple of hits. We simply have a lot of work to do in order to play at the level which puts us in competition with the best teams in our league.” Next weekend the Royals are at home with Wilseck while Kaiserslautern boards the bus to Vicenza.

Kaiserslautern wins in dramatic fashion; Ramstein ‘In the Pink’ in Softball by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Kaiserslautern junior Abby Young toed the pitching rubber preparing to throw what she hoped would be her last pitch on the glorious sunny Saturday afternoon. Holding the ball in the glove against her belt, she took a quick glance around the infield and saw that the bases were occupied by players wearing the wrong color uniforms. Her teammates in the dugout were vociferously encouraging her, as they had all day. She took a deep breath, looked down at the dirt to gather her thoughts and clear her head, then focused on the open mitt target

given her Sky Flanagan for the 150th time that day. Young was exhausted and having trouble finding the strike zone. She entered the inning ahead 15-10, but because of fatigue and pressure, the next five hitters reached base, four by bases on balls, and the Kaiserslautern lead had shrunk to just two. “I was a little scared,” said Flanagan. “But I knew she (Young) could get us through the inning. I didn’t know the score and I just wanted to keep everything in front of me. I tried to get Abby through it. I wanted to go up and tell her something, but I just couldn’t think of what to say.” Young knew it all boiled down to one

last pitch. “There was a lot of pressure. I didn’t know the score but I knew I had to throw three strikes. So I went over the mechanics in my head and made sure I did everything correctly and just threw.” Staring at the target and ignoring everything else going on around her, Young exhaled, windmilled her left arm, and then watched with relief as the umpire raised his right arm for a called third strike. The Kaiserslautern fans and players erupted. She could finally relax. With the strike out, the Raiders escaped with a 15-13 softball victory on the Landstuhl field against the scrappy and well coached Lakenheath Lancers who refused to give in. Kaiserslautern

also won the morning opener against Alconbury 22-1 in a walk fest. The Raiders took a 6-2 lead into the third inning, but the resilient Lancers tied it with four of their own, including a bases loaded triple. Kaiserslautern, with the help of several walks and some timely hitting, picked up six more in its half of the inning, the big blow a bomb off the fence for a double by first baseman Kyra Watson. But she was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning up 12-6. The Lancers would not stay down and looked like they might get back into it in their next at bat, loading the bases again. With one out, the Raiders turned

Kaiserslautern American

April 26, 2019 an unusual pitcher to first base to catcher to third base double play to escape the frame up 12-7. The hitter smacked a liner back to the mound and Young caught it and threw to first, but the runner got back. The runner at third had gone on the crack of the bat and was almost back to the dugout when Watson, the first basemen, threw it home. There was no play there so catcher Flanagan whipped the throw to third, forcing out the runner to escape the jam. In the fourth, Flanagan timed a Lakenheath change up and drilled a shot off the fence in left, driving home another run. The Lancers got three

more in their next at bat and it was 14-10 Kaiserslautern. In the fifth, Cat San Miguel tripled deep to right center and scored on a throwing error, 15-10 Raiders. “I was trying to hit a homerun,” Flanagan said with a smile on her face discussing the key at bat. Watson, Flanagan and San Miguel’s hits were all line shots, the first two to the deepest part of the field and Flanagan’s pulled down the line. Veteran coach Jesse Costa was calm after the game because has been through it all before. She has been a beacon in the European softball ranks for a long time and has piled up many achievements, including starting the successful program at Kadena a few years back. She understands the transitory nature of baseball in Europe and knows that every year brings a new challenge. “Overall I am happy,” she said. “We only have two returning starters. I thought this was going to be a rebuilding year, so the way they are playing together, I am really happy with where they are.” Costa pointed to one of her returnees, Erin Nuckols, as a strong leader who has really come into her own. She said she is a sophomore but is stepping up, which is always sorely needed when there is so much movement from year to year. The Raiders are 6-2 and improving

each week as they countdown to the Euros in May. Costa named Stuttgart, Vilseck and Ramstein as the strongest of the field, as of right now. But there are still three weeks remaining before Euros, which will be in the KMC May 23-25. In Ramstein on Friday, the Royals rolled over Lakenheath 16-1 and Alconbury 20-0 to raise their record to 5-3. “It was our first real moment of competing as a team rather than individuals,” said Co-Coach Carter Hollenback. “We focus on team first. It takes time for a young team to gel and to implement a ‘team before self ’ ideology. We try to instill the motto ‘Attitude and Effort’ every day at prac-

Page 17 tice and in games. We’ve had several players step up this season as leaders.” Against Alconbury, the Royals showed that high school athletics is not just about playing games and practicing. To show their concern for survivors of cancer, the girls wore pink uniforms, which has become a tradition. “The Breast Cancer Awareness game is an opportunity for us to recognize those individuals that have battled cancer. We have been acknowledging survivors for at least five years. Our team parents (Mr. and Mrs. Deutsch) have been in charge the past two years,” Hollenback said.

Living in Germany – Cultural Differences twelve-hour one. Sometimes when speaking, Germans will use the 12 hour clock. Usually, this does not cause confusion. Very few people in Germany eat dinner at 8 in the morning.

by FindItGuide.com Quiet time (Ruhezeit) Quiet Time is from MonSat from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and all day Sundays and holidays (check with local authorities for slight variations on this). A little quiet snoring is allowed, but house and garden appliances and machinery are off limits during these times. No midnight clothes washing or Sunday afternoon lawn mowing. If you have any specific questions, like: Can I use my brand new Super X-G ACME chainsaw to trim daisies on sunny summer afternoons?, ask the Ordnungsamt representative [usually located in your local city hall (Rathaus)]. Timeliness Whether the event is social or business, punctuality

in Germany is important. An invitation for dinner at eight usually means anywhere between 7:55 and 8 p.m. If you are planning a party, tell your German friends the time you actually want and expect them to arrive — don’t plan to have that 15 minute American buffer zone to put

the finishing touches on your hors d’oeuvres. There are reports of an “Akademisches Viertel” (academic quarter-hour) clause which gets you off the hook if you are less than 15 minutes late. The best thing to do is just to be on time. If you have a meeting or

are invited to a social function, and you find yourself running late, call to announce your late arrival (preferably before the time you were expected). Remember that in Germany, time is usually on the twenty-four hour scale, like in the military, not the

Sidewalk & street Whether you own a home or live in a rental, it is your responsibility to sweep the sidewalk and street in front of the house. You also need to pull out the weeds in the sidewalk. Failing to do so can result in fines. In the winter months, you must clear and sand/salt your sidewalk between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. If someone slips and breaks their leg in front of your house during this time, you will be liable. (Note: if you have an elderly neighbor, go ahead and clear their walk, too. You’ll gain a bunch of brownie points for the next grill party.)

7th Culinary-spring hike in Wolfstein Saturday and Sunday

During the culinary hike in Wolfstein participants get to sit down for a break and taste different food specialties and wines.

by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. After the amazing culinary hike last year in Wolfstein we are very proud to inform you about our hiking tour on Saturday, April 27, 11 a.m. and Sunday April 28, 10 a.m., this year. Wolfstein is very famous for its watchable migratory routes. The hiking route is called “Panoramaweg” (panorama path), where you will have a wonderful view around Wolfstein, the “Lautertal-Valley” and the big Königsberg Massiv, one of the highest mountains in the northern palatinate area. This year there will also be traditional local heroes like in the last years, for example Hotel Königsberg and Eventcatering Fröhlich, who will spoil you with culinary delights like the popular salmon from the Kota-grill or the Mediterranean redwine meat and dumplingslices with mushroom sauce. Another highlight of this year’s hike are the Schottlers Genussreich

from Dennenfels who serve tatsty Beef- and Saumagenburgers – traditional palatinate style. You know Big Boys Barbeque from the other culinary hikes? He bribes with smoked and pulled pork in original American barbeque sauce, simmering over 20 hours! The ski club of Wolfstein considered something special beside their culinary offer of curd and lard sandwiches from own production. Together with „Kitzmann little tobacconist’s shop“ from they organized a “Smokers Lounge” at their club area! Wine producers from some of the Palatinate’s and Rinehessens bestknown wine regions will present their favorite wines and Seccos (German sparkling wine). In the exquisite circle of the attended wine-growers you will find winery Holz Weisbrodt from Weisenheim, winery Baum-Storzum, winery Wolf and many more. Wine pass: If you acquire a wine-pass at the beginning of the event, you’ll also get your personal wine glass. With the pass and the glass combined every vintner will fill it up with the wine you can choose for only 2,00 € for 0,1

l or 3,50 € for 0,2 l per filling. On this way, you can shape your very personal wine-tasting. Moreover, the winetasting glass is a great souvenir and furthermore you can participate on a raffle where you can win cool prizes. If you don’t drink wine or alcohol, you won’t need a Wine pass. Starting point of the hike is the city hall in the middle of Wolfstein.

For your GPS: Im Tauchental 3, 67752 Wolfstein Parking spaces you will find also around the city hall or you take the easy way with the Lautertal-valley-train by Deutsche Bahn. www.bahn.de Read more about the culinary hike on the representer’s homepage at: www.kulinarische-wanderung.de (also in English)
