SITE PLAN and ELEVATION to Sveagen

This proposal confronts the traditional library by offering a roof of continuous aluminum grids and plates, encased between two layers of glass. The grid has the ability to be tilted, which allows for precise control of the light intensity. The horizontal grid has a spacing of half of a meter, with it being half of a meter in width. The buildings have floating floors integrated within to provide a unique interaction with the space. The future belongs to the understanding of traditional values and the integration of new design challenges in order to achieve the continuity between past successes and future’s inventions. From now on, people would come to library not only to communicate, read and learn, but also to enjoy the interaction between the individual and space.

The addition pays homage to the successive four annexes of Gunnar Aspulnd’s original design. His original intent was to take visitors through a transition of space from one realm to another, stimulating spatial awareness. Two main entrances on either side of the addition welcome pedestrian traffic into the open interior but then force them to make a decision. Visitors meet elongated ramps that lead downward towards the main circulation area, encouraging thought during a transitional moment. Entrances across the building avail themselves to the enjoyment of the hill. A series of stairs lead upward from the addition to the interior of the dome making the final important rhythmic integration between the two structures.
