Wayang is a generic term denoting traditional theatre in Indonesia. There is no evidence that wayang existed before Hinduism came to Southeast Asia sometime in the first century CE. However, there very well may have been indigenous storytelling traditions that had a profound impact on the development of the traditional puppet theatre. The first record of a wayang performance is from an inscription dated 930 CE which says “si Galigi mawayang,” or “Sir Galigi played wayang”. From that time till today it seems certain features of traditional puppet theatre have remained. Galigi was an itinerant performer who was requested to perform for a special royal occasion. At that event he performed a story about the hero Bhima from the Mahabharata. Hinduism arrived in Indonesia from India even before the Christian era, and was slowly adopted as the local belief system. Sanskrit became the literary and court language of Java and later of Bali. The Hindus changed the Wayang (as did the Muslims, later) to spread their religion, mostly by stories from the Mahabharata or the Ramayana.
Indonesian wayang. Kulit means skin, and refers to the leather construction of the puppets that are carefully chiseled with very fine tools and supported with carefully shaped buffalo horn handles and control rods. The stories are usually drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata or the Serat Menak. The island of Lombok has developed its own style of Serat Menak called “kazangiloonga”. There is a family of characters in Javanese wayang called Punakawan; they are sometimes referred to as

“clown-servants” because they normally are associated with the story’s hero, and provide humorous and philosophical interludes. Semar is the father of Gareng (oldest son), Petruk, and Bagong (youngest son).

To remove the wax after the dyeing process, a solvent can be used. Alternatively, the hardened wax can be pressed out with an iron; the hot surface melts the wax it is pressed through the fabric. If a multiple-colored design is desired, the process is repeated for each color.

What is Batik? Batik (pronounced ‘Bah-Teak’) is a technique used to dye fabrics. Batiking is a relatively straightforward process that often produces beautiful results. First, melted wax is applied to the fabric in the areas that are to be free of dye. There are various methods used to apply the liquid wax, but brushing or directly pouring the wax are the most common. Once the molten wax cools, it hardens and penetrates into the fabric. Next the fabric is soaked in dye. The wax prevents dye from penetrating onto the fabric and therefore keeps those areas of fabric in their original color.

The canting is the most important tool of the Batik artisan. The canting is a small, thin-walled, spouted, copper vessel which resembles the bowl of a pipe. The implement is filled with molten wax and held like a stylus. The batik artist draws designs on a length of cloth using the wax that flows from the canting’s tiny, downwardcurving spouts. The number of spouts, their widths and endings, can be varied to achieve different effects with great precision. Patterns of e Batik world-wid Javanese Antique Batik Javanese traditional batik, especially from Jogjakarta, has special meanings which is rooted to the Javanese idea of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown ,white and violet, which represents the four major Hindu Gods, and certain patterns can only be worn by royals. Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns. Patterns similar to Indonesian batik are also found in several countries of West Africa,
such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Uganda and Mali. And in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Philippines,

Malaysia, Thailand and Burma, which displays the influence of the Indonesian batik internationally. China has a long history of batik production dating back to the sixth century. Today you can still find batik being done by the ethnic people in Guizhou Province, in the South-West of China. Here the Miao, Bouyei and Gejia people use a dye resist method that is different from the Han Chinese. There are also many different sub groups within the Miao minority. The Miao place great emphasis on their
costumes which are made up of decorative fabrics which they achieve by pattern weaving and wax resist. By using freehand drawing of traditional designs using a feather, thin stick, piece of fine bone or a metal or wooden comb-like tool. This is done by women. Forced through a thin metal stencil with a flexible metal or wooden tool. This enables accurate repeat patterns to be achieved.

Wayang golek & Wayang kulit Puppet art form in the original Hindu culture arose before entry in Indonesia, and start growing in the era of Hindu Javanese. Pertunjukan Kesenian wayang adalah merupakan sisa-sisa upacara keagamaan orang Jawa yaitu sisa-sisa dari kepercayaan animisme dan dynamisme. In the palaces of Java are the oldest known ensembles, the Munggang and Kodokngorek gamelans, apparently from the 12th century. These formed the basis of a “loud style.” A different, “soft style” developed out of the kemanak tradition and is related to the traditions of singing Javanese poetry, in a manner which is often believed to be similar to performance of modern bedhaya dance. In the 17th century, these loud and soft styles mixed, and to a large extent the variety of modern gamelan styles of Bali, Java, and Sunda resulted from different ways of mixing these elements.
