CIRCULAR NEEDLES These are usually used for knitting in the round, for example on a seamless hat, but in this case a circular needle has been used because of the size of the project. When casting on a large number of stitches and knitting a lengthy piece it’s easier to keep the stitches on the needle and support the weight of the work if using a circular needle. However, if you don’t have a circular needle then straight needles will be perfectly fine.

WORKING IN THE ROUND This hat is knitted in the round on both circular and double-pointed needles. Your stitches should fit comfortably around your circular needle, so make sure the length of the needle is shorter than the circumference of your hat. When you start to shape the top, you will find that you have too few stitches for the circular needle, so switch to using double-pointed needles at this stage.

“For the larger sizes why not use a tie ribbon instead of a button? Snip the ribbon into two lengths and sew firmly in place to the wrong side of the border just under the chin.” LK Designer, Tina Barrett
