BAC KGR OUN D Bloodland was published in the the United States in 2012 by Picador, established in 1995 as the trade paperback imprint for Macmillan.
Bloodland was written by Alan Glynn, author of Winterland, Graveland, and The Dark Fields which was released as Limitless, a movie by Relativity Media. The cover designer was not credited in the book, but a representative of the Picador Publicity Department informs us that Keith Hayes - Art Director at “Little, Brown is the designer of this cover.
Style ST YLE
The cover of Bloodland presents a street-scape using an extreme camera angle to create energy and a sense of peril. The title, by-line, and other text elements are reversed out of nearly opaque black parallelograms which are placed in a somewhat chaotic arrangement that adds to the energy of the underlying image and creates the feeling that the viewer is falling, between buildings, towards the street below. The style lends itself well to adaptation for web-promotion. The type of image used on the book cover can be recreated in a web environment, and animated to slowly zoom in, while headers and key pieces of information can be presented in analogous parallelograms which themselves can also drift very slightly. Adding motion elements will tie the micro-site to the dynamism of the static cover.

Book Synopsis A helicopter crash off the coast of Ireland sends unexpected ripples through the international community in this intricate new thriller from the author of Winterland and Limitless (now a major motion picture). Susie Monaghan was on the cusp of stardom when her life was cut short by a tragic helicopter crash. After a full investigation, her death was ruled an accident: case closed. But a hungry young journalist named Jimmy Gilroy isn’t buying the official story. Before dying, Susie’s
path had crossed with an unlikely gallery of powerful men: an ex-Prime minister with a carefully guarded secret; the businessman brother of a U.S. Senator angling for the Oval Office; and a billionaire investor with his eye on an extremely rare commodity. Might there also be a link between Susie’s death and a deranged security contractor operating in Congo? Piece by piece, Jimmy uncovers a bizarre nexus of coincidence among these disparate people and events, revealing a conspiracy of frightening reach and consequence--one that could cost him his life.

S R E T C A R A CH Upon reading this thriller you are presented with a series of short, gripping but apparently unrelated scenes featuring a crew of characters who know nothing of each other, as of yet. It’s a fine tale of political intrigue, corporate greed & murder that our Irish author weaves...with just a bit of “Dublinese & obligatory swearing.” JIMMY GILROY is an struggling young unemployed Irish journalist. Who’s been given the chance to write the biography of an Irish TV starlet who died in a helicopter crash three years before. Digging into the circumstances of the accident, he finds himself drawn farther & farther into political intrigue from the Congo to the US. LARRY BOLGER is a disgruntled ex-Taoiseach who believes that men in high places owe him favours; the alcoholic former Taoiseach (I believe it’s pronounced “teeshock”), is an ethically indifferent politician with little genuine power. Over in Ireland, the former prime minister of Ireland, where the book is set, a recovering alcoholic struggling to write his memoirs, falls apart when he comes across a small news item in the paper about a body found in the countryside. SUSIE MONAGHAN a B-list star who always seemed to be in the tabloid spotlight until she died in a mysterious helicopter crash with a random assortment of five other men. It seems that, coked-up, she had just crashed a convention of international corporate tycoons at Drumcoolie Castle in County Tipperary discussing the purchase of a copper mine in eastern Congo...& had flown up to Donegal with a few paragliders to check out locations for another kind of flying high
DAVE CONWAY is an Irish realtor, property developer on the verge of bankruptcy. Who sells the mine but still lacks financing to finish his dream community Tara Meadows in Dublin, about to face financial Armageddon. MARIA MONAGHAN, Susie Monaghan’s sister who Larry is interviewing to learn more about Susie’s circumstances leading to the event. He ends up finding a deep feeling towards her. RAY KRONER is a mercenary who goes postal in the Congo; Ex-military man dumped unceremoniously back on the streets of the nations he risked his life to defend. JJ RUNDLE is a US senator who decides to run for President. Meanwhile in Congo, a private security contractor escorting him loses the plot, killing a number of civilians, the senator’s hand being crushed in the incident. Memory & tension are strong. DON RIBCOFF, the CEO of Gideon Global, who has a piece of the action & provides mercenaries to oversee the re-opening of the mine. Never knowing what it could lead to. JAMES “JIMMY” VAUGHAN, the oldest tycoon of them all, the money man who owns Oberon Capital Group, a businessman who also pulls political strings at the highest levels in the US administration.
